In the early morning hours of March 17, 1995 in Pickering, Ontario, six teenage boys go missing seemingly without a trace. At 12:50am, they leave a house party and head to a local marina to "goof around". At 1:48am, three of the boys are spotted on surveillance footage at the marina.Between 2:30 and 3:00am, locals hear the sound of a motor boat near the docks. Then, the trail goes cold with no concrete information surfacing about the whereabouts of the six boys nearly 30 years later. Police come to the logical conclusion that the six boys drowned in the lake that night after a joyride gone wrong. However, the stolen boat was allegedly "unsinkable" but has never been recovered in the lake despite an extensive search by police. So many questions remain in this case, with the biggest being: how can a boat and all six boys vanish without a trace?FIND US ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Instagram: @crimefamilypodcastTwitter: @crimefamilypod1Facebook: Crime Family PodcastEmail: crimefamilypodcast@gmail.comBecome a patron here:https://www.patreon.com/CrimefamilypodcastGet your Crime Family Merch here: https://www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/123775076EPISODE RESOURCES:Main Case website (with detailed timeline, photos, police documents, etc.):https://www.lostboysofpickering.com"New book delves deeper into the mystery of the Lost Boys of Pickering" (Durham) https://www.insauga.com/new-book-delves-deeper-into-the-mystery-of-the-lost-boys-of-pickering/"UNSOLVED: The Lost Boys of Pickering" (YouTube):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmrPy43Ine8The mystery of the Lost Boys: Part 3" (DurhamRegion.com):https://www.durhamregion.com/news-story/8566676-the-mystery-of-the-lost-boys-part-3/The Lost Pickering Boys Interview with Investigator Bruce Ricketts (YouTube):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vS_eQOM_qiASupport the show

Over the next several years, his violent side began to emerge which resulted in a few run-ins with the law that should have caused some red flags for authorities. There is evidence that supports both sides of the argument as authorities in Canada and the US investigate the brutal murders of three members of the Rafay family.Having been behind bars for almost two decades, Sebastian and Atif still claim their innocence. 18-year-old Belgian backpacker Theo Hayez set out on a trip across Australia in late 2018. Looking for adventure, he backpacked all over the continent before ending up in Byron Bay, a small town on Australia's Eastern tip, in late May 2019. After not hearing from him for days, Theo's mother gets worried and discovered that he actually hadn't been seen since the night of May 31- when he got kicked out of a bar for being intoxicated and walked out of view of the establishment's CCTV camera. After an investigation is launched into his whereabouts, his Google account provides vital GPS tracking data from his phone the night he disappeared and paints an exact route of his whereabouts after leaving the bar. However, the route he takes (and the final destination he has) leads to more questions than answers and tons of theories about what happened that night. Was he met with foul play? Did he die by misadventure? Or is there another explanation? This is the story of a young man who disappeared leaving behind a digital trail, a ton of questions and a grieving family looking for answers.FIND US ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Instagram: @crimefamilypodcastTwitter: @crimefamilypod1Facebook: Crime Family PodcastEmail: crimefamilypodcast@gmail.comBecome a patron here:https://www.patreon.com/CrimefamilypodcastGet your Crime Family Merch here: https://www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/123775076EPISODE RESOURCES:SPECIAL INVESTIGATION: "What Really Happened to Backpacker Theo Hayez?" Earlier that day, the girls expressed concerns to family members that a white van was following them. Shortly after the girls disappear, it becomes clear that not a lot is being done to help locate them as a series of missteps and oversights have caused the case to go cold. A misleading call to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children saying the girls have been found (which they weren't) and a missing case file are just a few oversights and mistakes that have left their family with many questions, very few answers and absolutely no closure. Crime Family is back! To kick off our fourth season (and to celebrate spooky season), we're telling you the story of the Salem Witch Trials, a series of cases that took place over an 18-month period back in the late 1600's.After two young girls in the Parris family household start to exhibit very strange symptoms in early 1692, it is soon speculated that the girls have had a curse placed on them by witches living among the community. It isn't long before paranoia starts taking over the village of Salem once hundreds of people are accused of witchcraft and many other people come down with similar symptoms over the next few months. What follows is a series of accusations and executions of anyone suspected to be a witch, leading to mass hysteria and a mystery that still exists today. This is the story of a small American village that used fear and speculation to scapegoat outsiders, and the deadly consequences that result from it. FIND US ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Instagram: @crimefamilypodcastTwitter: @crimefamilypod1Facebook: Crime Family PodcastEmail: crimefamilypodcast@gmail.comBecome a patron here:https://www.patreon.com/CrimefamilypodcastGet your Crime Family Merch here: https://www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/123775076EPISODE RESOURCES:"What really happened during the Salem Witch Trials - Brian A. Please use discretion when listening to this episode*In the early morning hours of August 8, 2014, 26-year-old Warriena Wright falls to her death from a balcony 14 floors above the ground. Immediately, questions about what happened to her abound. Only days later, 28-year-old Gable Tostee is arrested for her murder and as it turns out, the answers to what happened that night lie on a three-hour-long audio tape recorded by Gable himself. Igniting a high-profile trial, the argument of whether Gable could be held responsible for her death based on the series of events that take place on the tape is at the center of this tragic case. In this episode, we play crucial parts of that audio tape and outline both the controversy that surrounded Warriena's death and the subsequent trial of Gable Tostee. Please use discretion when listening to this episode*No one joins a cult; everyone joins a good thing, but once you're in too deep, it can be impossible to tell the difference. Our 4-part cult miniseries concludes with a discussion about one of the most notorious cults in history. Founded by Keith Raniere in the late 1990's, NXIVM began as a series of self-help "Executive Success Programs", meant to help people overcome challenges in their lives and become better versions of themselves. Underneath the façade was a dangerous secret society within the group that involved damaging collateral to join, "slaves",  "masters" and horrific branding ceremonies. It would be impossible to have a miniseries about cults without talking about the most high-profile one of the 21st-century. This is the story of NXIVM and the true dangers that lurked under the surface of a seemingly innocent self-help group and the widespread damage it caused to its many victims.FIND US ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Instagram: @crimefamilypodcastTwitter: @crimefamilypod1Facebook: Crime Family PodcastEmail: crimefamilypodcast@gmail.comCheck out our new website:  crimefamilypodcast.caMusic (pre-theme) by LiteSaturation on Pixabay.EPISODE RESOURCES:"The Making of Vanguard" (CBC News):https://newsinteractives.cbc.ca/longform/the-making-of-the-vanguardLaw enforcement has fielded NXIVM complaints for years (Times Union):https://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Law-enforcement-has-fielded-NXIVM-complaints-for-12348611.phpThe Stripe Path – a primer for those considering joining NXIVM (By Frank Parlato) (2018):https://artvoice.com/2018/12/16/the-stripe-path-a-primer-for-those-considering-joining-nxivm/"Mark Vincente is a Genuine Hero of the NXIVM Saga" (The Frank Report):https://frankreport.com/2019/05/11/mark-vicente-is-a-genuine-hero-of-the-nxivm-saga/SEDUCED: Inside the NXIVM Cult (Starz Miniseries):https://www.starz.com/us/en/series/seduced-inside-the-nxivm-cult/59967The Vow (HBO Docuseries):https://www.hbo.com/the-vow

No one joins a cult; everyone joins a good thing, but once you're in too deep, it can be impossible to tell the difference. In 1958, Charles E. Dietrich Sr set out to do a good thing: create a drug rehabilitation center that was more inclusive, unlike AA which he found to be limiting. What started out as a new-wave addiction treatment movement turned into a violent and dangerous cult that was existing in plain sight and operating very differently on the inside than was being shown to the outside world.Headed by a troubled dictator, Synanon eventually became known as "one of most dangerous and violent cults America had ever seen".  Forced abortions and taking violent revenge on anyone who fought against them (especially lawyer Paul Morantz) are just some of the sinister details outlined in our discussion.FIND US ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Instagram: @crimefamilypodcastTwitter: @crimefamilypod1Facebook: Crime Family PodcastEmail: crimefamilypodcast@gmail.comCheck out our new website at crimefamilypodcast.caMusic (pre-theme) by LiteSaturation on Pixabay.EPISODE RESOURCES:"The Man who Fought Cults and Won" by Matt Novak. The use of modern technology has both positive and negatives. This week, we discuss two cases that expose the dark side of social media- platforms that allowed monsters to enact their murderous desires.First, Katie tells the story of Jenae Gagnier, better known to her millions of followers as Mercedes Morr- who rose to social media fame due to her provocative posts. In late August 2021, everything changed for her when one "fan" decided to take it much too far and go to her home with murder on his mind. Then, AJ tells the story of the senseless murder of 74-year-old Robert Godwin, who was gunned down on the streets of Cleveland in April 2017 at the hands of Steve Stephens, also known as "The Facebook Killer". After a breakup with a long-term girlfriend, Steve snaps and decides to take the life of a random stranger on the street and post a video of the murder on Facebook for the world to see. In our season 3 premiere, we invite Jia Wertz back to the show to discuss a case covered in her new podcast series, "Speaking Of Crime". Kylen Schulte and Crystal Turner were a married couple who were murdered near Moab, Utah in August 2021. The women were last seen shortly after midnight on August 14 after a night out with friends. A few days later, a family friend went looking for them and found them dead at their campsite with multiple gunshot wounds. Sadly, the women mentioned to their friends that there was a "creepy guy" lingering near their campsite in the few days prior, so this logically seems like the first person of interest. But who is this "creepy guy?"Kylen's father Sean-Paul sprung into action in the early days of the investigation and was able to create a list of 17 people who could be considered suspects, and he even found a set of keys near the crime scene. All these leads have been turned over to law enforcement, who have given the family nothing in return about where these leads have taken the investigation. We speak with Jia in-depth about this unsolved case as well as its connection to the biggest true crime case in recent decades: the murder of Gabby Petito.Preview music (pre-credits)  by LiteSaturation from Pixabay.FIND US ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Instagram:  @crimefamilypodcastTwitter: @crimefamilypod1Facebook: Crime Family PodcastEmail: crimefamilypodcast@gmail.comListen to "Speaking of Crime" wherever you get your podcasts and follow them @CrimeSpeaking on Twitter, and @speakingofcrime on Instagram to learn even more about this case!EPISODE RESOURCES:Suspects in the Case (People Magazine): https://people.com/crime/persons-of-interest-in-moab-double-murder-newlyweds-crystal-turned-kylen-schulte/Local P.I. In part I of our season 2 finale, we discuss the high profile Madeleine McCann case- a case which is still highly debated and unsolved to this day.The McCann family was vacationing in Praia Da Luz, Portugal in May 2007 when their three-year-old daughter Madeleine was abducted from her bed while her parents were at a restaurant with friends only feet away from Apartment 5A. Shortly after her abduction, the Portugal police begin an investigation into the missing toddler only to quickly zero on three major suspects: An interpreter named Robert Murat ( a British man who injects himself into the investigation in an attempt to help locate Madeleine) and the girl's own parents Kate and Gerry McCann. In part one of our discussion, we talk about the circumstances and timeline surrounding her disappearance and the events directly following the abduction. Also, we take a look at these three major suspects who were given official "arguido" status in the early stages of the investigation and how the police's tunnel vision on these two possible scenarios may have distracted them from other leads that could have been much more promising. Our discussion and dissection of one of the world's most high-profile missing person's case is one you don't want to miss!FIND US ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Instagram: @crimefamilypodcastTwitter: @crimefamilypod1Facebook: Crime Family PodcastEmail: crimefamilypodcast@gmail.comEPISODE RESOURCES:The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann (Netflix Docuseries)60 Minutes Australia (Maddie and the Monster): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pvqu9Wd388cNew York Times (Madeleine McCann Archive):https://www.nytimes.com/topic/person/madeleine-mccann

The Muskoka region of Ontario is usually a beautiful summer destination for cottage owners in Canada, but this week we tell you the story of its dark underside: a side of the community that centers around one family whom many suspect to be responsible for a string of murders from the 1990's.After 77-year-old Joan Lawrence went missing in the fall of 1998, the Laan family was at the center of rumors and speculation about what could have happened to her. The police investigation that follows unveils what was going on behind closed doors of the Laan family's business dealings- specifically those related to a series of retirement homes they owned in the Muskoka region. In this story, the alleged mistreatment of the residents and their missing pension checks are only the beginning. Could the Laan family also be responsible for this series of suspected murders?
