Most of us think we'd never fall for a cult. We imagine the followers of Jim Jones as naïve, brainwashed, or broken people who “drank the Kool-Aid.” But what if that's not the truth at all?In this eye-opening episode, host Gabe Howard speaks with the award-winning author of “Death in the Jungle: Murder, Betrayal, and the Lost Dream of Jonestown,” Candace Fleming, about the real story behind Jonestown, aka the Peoples Temple, and the mass suicide that shocked the world. Fleming reveals how ordinary, intelligent, and socially conscious people were slowly drawn into Jim Jones's orbit — not because they wanted to die, but because they wanted to belong, to matter, and to change the world. Listener takeaways: Discover nine warning signs of a destructive or cult-like group. Learn why intelligent, well-intentioned people joined Jim Jones' cult. Explore how to recognize and protect yourself from coercive influences. Listen in as they explore how groupthink, manipulation, and gradual isolation can transform a movement with noble intentions into something deeply destructive. Together, they dismantle the myths surrounding cults and reveal the psychological, emotional, and social dynamics that allow them to take hold. Ultimately, their conversation challenges us to confront an unsettling question: Could it happen to any of us? “They had started people with Peoples Temple, some of them back in the ‘50s when it was still in Indianapolis and truly was an integrated church, unheard of in the '50s. They followed Jones to California and then on to Guyana. And all of that was because of their own community. So people came for many reasons, but none of them because they were, as we would like to say, cultists, brainwashed, crazy.” ~Candace Fleming Our host, Candace Fleming, is the prolific and versatile award-winning author of many books for children and young adults. School Library Journal praised her most recent title, Murder Among Friends, which received four starred reviews, as a "chilling page-turner." Her previous book The Rise and Fall of Charles Lindbergh received six starred reviews, was a Kirkus, PW, Booklist, and SLJ Best Book of the Year, and was hailed by the Wall Street Journal as a “fascinating chronicle.” Candace's The Family Romanov also received six starred reviews, won the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for Nonfiction and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and was recognized as a Sibert Nonfiction Honor Book. Her many acclaimed picture books include Giant Squid, a Sibert Honor Book. Visit her on the web at candacefleming.com. Our host, Gabe Howard, is an award-winning writer and speaker who lives with bipolar disorder. He is the author of the popular book, "Mental Illness is an Asshole and other Observations," available from Amazon; signed copies are also available directly from the author. Siedemnastowieczni holenderscy nawigatorzy z Willemem Janszoonem na czele dotarli do nowego lądu, sporządzili pierwsze mapy wybrzeża i nazwali tę ziemię, Nowa Holandia. W XVII i XVIII wieku skazańców wywożono do dwóch niedawno odkrytych Ameryk, szczególnie do Północnej. Po amerykańskiej rewolucji prawo zakazało wywózki więźniów do Stanów Zjednoczonych. Wtedy postanowiono kolonię w Australii zasiedlić skazańcami. 1 maja 1787 roku z Portsmouth, pod dowództwem kapitana Arthura Phillipa wyruszyła tzw. First Fleet. „Jim Jones at Botany Bay” to australijska tzw. „busz ballad” z początku XIX wieku. Jej narrator Jim Jones zostaje uznany za winnego kłusownictwa i skazany na transport do kolonii karnej, oczywiście w Nowej Południowej Walii. Po drodze jego statek zostaje zaatakowany przez piratów ale uzbrojona załoga pokonuje napastników. Jim Jones zastanawia się, czy nie wolałby przypadkiem dołączyć do piratów niż udać się do przeklętej Botany Bay. Tam czeka go ciężkie życie pełne harówy. I taką romantyczną historię opowiada nam właśnie ballada „Jim Jones at Botany Bay”. Sail Ho Audycja zawiera utwory: "Jim Jones At Botany Bay" w wykonaniu Jennifer Jason Leigh, słowa i muzyka: tradycyjne "Ballada o Botany Bay" w wykonaniu zespołu Cztery Refy, słowa: Anna Peszkowska, muzyka: trad. (oryg. "Jim Jones At Botany Bay")

Yassy joins the crew as they celebrate Max B's long-awaited return and unpack his first 48 hours out, from the Jets game to late-night studio runs and talk of a potential Jim Jones reunion (2:33). A Patreon listener question sparks a deeper conversation about how the pandemic reshaped youth behavior, work ethic, and communication (27:04). From there, the team breaks down Wendy Williams being cleared of dementia, linking her story to conservatorships like Britney Spears and Amanda Bynes, and debating whether Wendy could ever return to daytime TV (38:38). Summer Walker's "wedding-invite" rollout for 'Finally Over It' and Wale's 'Everything Is A Lot' both get major praise (1:05:48). The group then reacts to Billboard's Top Songwriters of the 21st Century list, setting off hilarious confusion over Kesha's "TiK ToK" versus the TikTok app and Alex's infamous HTC phone era (1:17:33). The episode closes with Salt-N-Pepa and OutKast's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductions, Tyler the Creator's performance of "B.O.B.," and a final round of Android jokes (1:41:00). Before the world knew his name, Jim Jones was just a small-town preacher with a big vision. He spoke about justice, equality, and love when few others dared to — drawing in crowds who saw him as a voice for the forgotten. But behind the sermons and the smiles was a man driven by something more than faith. In Part One, we explore the rise of Jim Jones — his early life, his calling to ministry, and how his hunger to lead began to blur the lines between pastor and prophet.Trigger Warnings:RacismAnimal DeathRapeViolenceCults Deadly Faith PATREON: https://patreon.com/DeadlyFaithPodcast?utm_medium=unknown&utm_source=join_link&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=copyLinkDeadly Drip Merch https://www.bonfire.com/store/deadly-drip/?utm_source=facebook_messenger&utm_medium=store_page_published_share&utm_campaign=deadly-drip&utm_content=default Need A Podcast Editor? On this episode of The Wandering Road, Chris is joined by JJ, host of Southern Demonology, for a deep exploration into the darker side of faith and the human need for meaning at the end of days. Together, they unpack the chilling stories of Jim Jones and Heaven's Gate—two movements that promised salvation but led their followers to tragedy. The conversation then turns to the growing wave of modern “Rapture” predictions circulating today, and how these claims continue to exploit fear, uncertainty, and devotion in the digital age. Chris and JJ discuss the psychological pull of apocalyptic belief, the danger of unchecked religious authority, and the fine line between faith and fanaticism.Support the showSOCIAL MEDIATwitter: @TWRoadpodcastIG: twroadpodcastWant to be a guest or share your paranormal experiences? Sunday, 5 October 2025 But he said, ‘No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them. Matthew 13:29 “And he said, ‘No! Not lest gathering the darnel, you should uproot with them the wheat'” (CG). In the previous verse, Jesus said that the servants of the landowner asked him if he wanted them to gather up the darnel from the field of grain. He continues now with, “And he said, ‘No! Not lest gathering the darnel, you should uproot with them the wheat.'” A new word, ekrizoó, to uproot, is seen. It is derived from ek, from or out of, and rhizoó, to root. Hence, it is to uproot. If you've ever worked in a garden, you know the wisdom of the landowner's decision. When you have weeds around the plant you are growing and pull them out, you can often damage your plant's roots or even pull the plant out with the weeds. In the case of the darnel, its roots would be entangled with the good stalks, easily ruining them if you try to pull it out. There is also the chance of treading on the good stalks while going through the field to get the darnel. And even if both of those were avoided, as noted above, the soil around the good stalks could be disturbed enough to negatively affect or kill those nearby. It is not worth the risk to take such chances. Life application: Think of the patience and wisdom of the Lord. The devil has his dirty fingers all over the church, even since the very beginning. At the earliest days of the church, Paul and the other New Testament writers were writing letters of warning to the churches concerning those who were harmful darnel within the good crop – “Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. 18 For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple.” Romans 16:17, 18 “Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! 2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.” James 5:1-3 “But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.” 2 Peter 2:1 “I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, does not receive us. 10 Therefore, if I come, I will call to mind his deeds which he does, prating against us with malicious words. And not content with that, he himself does not receive the brethren, and forbids those who wish to, putting them out of the church. 11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.” 3 John -9-11 “These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they mouth great swelling words, flattering people to gain advantage. 17 But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ: 18 how they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. 19 These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.” Jude -16-19 Think of it. These people were writing in the very earliest days of the church. Each personally encountered the risen Christ. And yet, they were already warning of the proverbial darnel among the wheat. But the Lord's example in this parable was to allow them to continue lest good stalks were harmed in the process. But can't these false teachers harm the crop as well? The answer is, “Most assuredly.” This is why these warnings have been written. But how are you, a stalk of good grain in the body of believers, going to avoid being harmed by them? By knowing what the word says! It is not sufficient to trust your pastor. He could be one of the false brethren noted above! Didn't the church suffer (and it still suffers to this day) through the teaching of people like Joseph Smith, Charles Taze Russell, Ellen G. White, and innumerable other false teachers? Haven't countless people lost their lives to false teachers like Jim Jones and David Koresh? Display wisdom! Know what the Bible says by reading it daily. When a false teacher enters into your sphere of existence, you will be able to identify him (or her!) and alert others. Be sure to do so. The Lord will take care of them in the end, but we have our part to do now. Glorious God, give us wisdom in identifying false doctrine and those who teach it. May we responsibly handle Your word, learning it and being on the lookout for those who might harm the crop the Lord is preparing. Help us in this, O God. Amen.

Labor Day might've pushed us to Tuesday, but the energy didn't miss a beat. In this week's episode of PSA: The Mental Health Podcast, Izzy Baker teams up with JR, host of Real Sht Let's Talk, to go deep on rejection, masculinity, and the invisible rules that Black men are forced to play by — even when we do everything “right.” From viral barbershop clips to viral job rejection letters, this episode exposes the emotional cost of showing up with credentials and still being seen as not enough. The convo opens with Drake's viral BBL joke — and what might've seemed like a funny one-liner turns into a raw dialogue on male body image, deflection, and the way men, especially Black men, are trained to laugh off what hurts. Izzy and JR challenge the idea that men don't struggle with appearance and ask what it means when jokes start masking deep insecurities. Then it gets even deeper — we unpack the clip of Jim Jones, Fabolous, Maino, and Dave East sitting around debating Black privilege, struggle, and the unspoken hierarchy of pain. JR delivers a fiery perspective: when you're Black in America, even your “privilege” is questioned, and the pressure to prove your authenticity becomes a mental weight too many brothers silently carry.Whether it's job applications, fake motivational quotes from parents, or “just wear a suit” advice, this episode pulls back the curtain on the gaslighting Black men face while trying to level up. This episode is for the man who's tired of chasing validation from jobs, platforms, or people who don't see his worth. For the one who's constantly told he's not “struggling enough” to be relatable. For the brother who's been hiding pain under a personality.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/p-s-a-the-mental-health-podcast--5520511/support.TrustBuilder Package
Saving Elephants | Millennials defending & expressing conservative values
Few forerunners of the modern conservative movement are as important, little known, and underappreciated as Frank Meyer. Meyer possessed the IT factor that made women want him and men want to be associated with him. He used that in his early years to advance Marxism in England—building an impressive Marxist organization that had the attention of UK's government, dating the Prime Minister's daughter while calling for the violent overthrow of the Prime Minister's government, and becoming a national celebrity as the nation debated whether he should be exiled. But later in life, when he turned to the Right, that same charisma was used to help William F. Buckley build a fledgling conservative movement that ultimately changed the politics of the nation. Joining Josh to discuss this most remarkable life is Daniel J. Flynn, author of his latest book: The Man Who Invented Conservatism: The Unlikely Life of Frank S. Meyer. About Daniel J. Flynn From spectator.org Daniel J. Flynn, a senior editor of The American Spectator, serves as a visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution for the 2024-2025 academic year. His books include Cult City: Harvey Milk, Jim Jones, and 10 Days That Shook San Francisco (ISI Books, 2018), Blue Collar Intellectuals: When the Enlightened and the Everyman Elevated America (ISI Books, 2011), A Conservative History of the American Left (Crown Forum, 2008), and Intellectual Morons: How Ideology Makes Smart People Fall for Stupid Ideas (Crown Forum, 2004). In 2025, he releases his magnum opus, The Man Who Invented Conservatism: The Unlikely Life of Frank S. Meyer. He splits time between city Massachusetts and cabin Vermont. About The Book Frank Meyer devised the blueprint for American conservatism—fusionism—championed by Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan, and so many to this day. Yet long before and far away, Communists in London chanted “Free Frank Meyer!” to block the deportation of a comrade who was their cause célèbre. Those fervent Marxists could never have predicted that their hero would one day provide the intellectual energy necessary to propel conservatives to political power. The Man Who Invented Conservatism unveils one of the twentieth century's great untold stories: a Communist turned conservative, an antiwar activist turned soldier, and a free-love enthusiast turned family man whose big idea captured the American Right. This intellectual migration coincided with a clandestine affair inside 10 Downing Street, service as a lieutenant to the man who later constructed the Berlin Wall, and neighborly chats with the pop-star and poet celebrity next door. Present at the creation of National Review, Meyer helped launch Joan Didion's writing career. From H. G. Wells to Henry Kissinger to Milton Friedman, he rubbed shoulders with everyone who mattered. Having discovered Meyer's previously unexamined correspondence in an old soda warehouse, Daniel J. Flynn documents this saga in The Man Who Invented Conservatism, exposing the rivalries, jealousies, friendships, and fights that shaped the movement and what it means to be a conservative today.

The conversation shifts to Jim Jones' sit-down with Fivio Foreign, and the generational divide on Nas' legacy (54:18). Later, the trio unpacks a list music-exec salaries (1:07:54), the Ozempic lawsuits, and how social media fuels body image pressure (1:13:46). This week on New Rory & Mal, Cardi B announces her 2nd album, Jim Jones takes credit for Nas going viral on social media, Rory and Mal debate whether or not they would sleep with a senior citizen for their inheritance, and Demaris wishes she was in Paris for Jay-Z's appearance at Beyonce's Cowboy Carter Tour #volumeSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The weekend is quickly approaching and Demaris can't stop smiling. What's got her in such a good mood? We give Mal his props for finally getting a prediction right as he predicted Offset would have a crush on Sabrina Carpenter. Rory responds to your IG comments calling him out for saying Cardi B was "rushed" to put out her new EP. Somebody has to bring Jim Jones down to earth for his recent comments about Nas. Plus, Will Smith needs to fire his "yes" men, the XXL Freshman class doesn't slap like it used to, and we shame Jeff Bezos for having the audacity to shut down Venice, Italy #volumeSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Rory and Mal are back fresh off a weekend where they were outside at Fanatics Fest. The Thunder won Game 7 as God answered Demaris' prayers. Jim Jones is out here making enemies out of everyone. Mal says Nick Grant dropped the best rap album of 2025. We learn Cardi B is finally dropping an EP, but get worried once we learn "WAP" and "Up" are on the project. Plus, Demaris would've done anything to be in Paris for Jay-Z's surprise pop up at Beyonce's concert, and B. Simone sounds out of touch rant about being "broke" #volumeSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
