This episode features Dr Claudia Rossy Parés (Department of Psychology, Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain). What is already known on this topic? Research has associated forgiveness with physical, emotional and spiritual benefits in people facing the end of life. Health professionals often feel unprepared to talk about forgiveness with their patients. The role that the spiritual caregiver plays with respect to forgiveness as a need of the patient is not clear. What this paper adds By offering in-depth, qualitative insights from experienced spiritual caregivers, this paper provides data of how spiritual caregivers perceive and address forgiveness as a theme at the end-of-life in the context of severe illness. The study identifies barriers experienced by spiritual caregivers to talking about forgiveness, and proposes resources to address them. Implications for practice, theory or policy Forgiveness in palliative care should be explored and offered as a possible path toward peace within a person-centered and autonomy-respecting framework, acknowledging that not all patients wish or are ready to forgive. Spiritual caregivers need protected time and supportive conditions for spiritual conversations with patients, ensuring follow-up across care transitions when possible, and clear role boundaries distinguishing them from clergy when engaging in forgiveness conversations. Future research should include multi-faith perspectives, use diverse designs across different care settings (hospital, hospice, primary care), and integrate patients' and families' experiences to deepen understanding of forgiveness in palliative care. Biruté Mary Galdikas passed away on March 24, 2026, at the age of 79. She spent more than 50 years studying orangutans in Borneo and fighting to protect them. Before she began her work, orangutans were the least understood of the great apes. She changed that. Her research formed the foundation of what we now know about orangutans. She was the first to learn what they ate, how they lived, how they moved, their long interbirth intervals, and so much more. Including the many threats to their survival. Her lifelong dedication inspired generations to care about orangutans and their forests, and to pursue careers in the field she helped shape. I had the honor and privilege of interviewing Birute Galdikas in 2021, on the fiftieth anniversary of her study. We're re-releasing this episode in her honor. Awe came upon everyone because many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. Acts 9:1-18 (NRSVUE) When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.” And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” I pray for continuous healing. Be transformed so we can transform others and the world. Maging isang “wounded healer.” The post Paglaya at Paghilom appeared first on Open Table Metropolitan Community Church.
This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! Some people stumble into the paranormal. Ernie Pack was born into it. In a family where ghost stories weren't whispered but welcomed, Ernie's introduction to the supernatural wasn't a shadow in the corner or a creak in the night — it was his great-grandfather, standing before him long after the man had passed. That single moment didn't frighten him… it awakened him. From that day forward, Ernie's life unfolded in two worlds: the one everyone sees, and the one only a few acknowledge. His early encounters sparked a fascination that grew into a calling — one that eventually led him to the infamous Waverly Hills Sanatorium, where the veil between the living and the dead feels thinner than anywhere else on earth. Ernie opens the door to his beginnings: the family that embraced ghosts instead of denying them, the encounters that shaped his beliefs, and the moments that nudged him toward the haunted hallways of Waverly Hills. This is where his story starts — with a ghost who shared his blood… and a path that's still pulling him deeper into the shadows. Christopher earned contracting money through intelligence agencies that was "hard to spend sometimes," revealing the strange economics of covert operations.Elite operators face profound psychological costs. Christopher's friend warned him to "stop trying to get 14-year-old guys to kill you because you have some death fantasy," highlighting how repeated high-stakes missions create patterns of self-destructive behavior that operators must eventually confront.Recognition of dysfunction is the first step toward meaningful change. By acknowledging his own "insanity" and identity crisis, Christopher demonstrates that even those in extreme professions can develop self-awareness and begin questioning the systems they served. In this podcast, Reuben Slife interviews Rocco Buttiglione about his life and work. Buttiglione was promised by Luigi Guissani, the founder of Communion and Liberation, that a Christian life will never be boring; taking this wager, he discusses his studies with Augusto Del Noce, his early encounters in Poland with Karol Wojtyła, his appointment to the European Union and time as Italian Minister of European Affairs, and the beginning of his friendship with Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina.
Part 1 Olive Oatman by Hourly History Summary"Olive Oatman" by Hourly History is a concise account of the life and experiences of Olive Oatman, a young American woman who was famously captured by Native Americans in the mid-19th century. *This is the Free Content version of my interview with Dr. John E. Browning. To access the entire episode, please consider becoming a Tier 1 ‘Gates of Argonath' member, or you can purchase this episode for a one-time fee. My guest this month is Dr. John E. Browning. A professor in the greater Atlanta metropolitan area, John Edgar Browning, Ph.D. has contracted or published 20 academic and popular trade books as well as over 100 shorter works on subjects that cluster around cultural studies, critical media literacy, Dracula, vampires, monstrosity, and horror. Included among his work in film and media studies is his decade-and-a-half-long ethnographic fieldwork with the human or real vampire subculture (a topic in which there are perhaps five scholars worldwide). In addition to academic venues, Browning has published on the real vampire subculture in public forums such as The Atlantic (2015) and Discover Magazine (2015 and 2018), and his unique expertise in this area has helped facilitate several public appearances as a guest scholar on, or service as a consultant for, over two dozen television and streaming networks, professional podcasts, and radio programs, including Discovery channel, National Geographic, Animal Planet, AMC Visionaries: Eli Roth's History of Horror, History channel, Disney+, Netflix, Discover Magazine's “It's Only Science” podcast, Ripley's Believe It or Not, NPR, The Howard Stern Show network, BBC Radio, RTÉ—Ireland's National Television and Radio Broadcaster, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Georgia Public Broadcasting, and SLATE among others. In this interview, John and I discuss his research into the Real Vampire Community. He talks about his motivation to begin looking into this subculture, as well as what he's learned over the years. As this topic somewhat overlaps with my own research into the Otherkin community, I take the opportunity to ‘compare notes' so to speak, and ask questions to gain more clarity on this group. John also discusses to what degree contemporary expressions of the vampire in popular culture have influenced the real vampire community, and how his research has contributed to changing perceptions of this subculture. He talks about his term ‘defiant culture' as it relates to people who have been labeled ‘Other' or ‘deviant' and also mentions how his research has helped forensic professionals that deal with crimes that seem, on the surface, to involve people who label themselves ‘vampires'. We also touch upon the Temple of the Vampire, a group that is viewed as a religious organization, and how this group relates to the larger vampire community in the US. WPA writer Sara B. Wrenn's oral history interview with Portland attorney A.L. Veazie, who grew up in Polk County in the late 1800s, recalling what life was like with the Chinese laborers who were working on railroads and other worksites. Not all his recollections are flattering, but they're not super surprising given that the Chinese were nearly all young, socially ostracized peasant men in a foreign land. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
Maritime plundering, or piracy, has happened in nearly all regions of the world, in most ages of human history. Yet the image that we have of "a pirate" in our collective imagination comes from one period in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. So "why has that one relatively short moment come to stand for all sea raiding across time and space?" That is the question with which Richard Blakemore begins his new book Enemies of All: The Rise and Fall of the Golden Age of Piracy. To answer it he not only surveys decades of plundering and combat at sea and on land, but also interprets court cases, parliamentary legislation, imperial administration or the lack of it, and the slave trade. For the “golden age of piracy”, like a conspiracy theory of the Kennedy assassination, at times seems to be connected to pretty much everything else going on at the same time. Except that in the case of piracy from 1650 to 1722, it actually was. Richard Blakemore is Associate Professor of Social and Maritime History at the University of Reading. Enemies of All is his second book. For Further Investigation We've talked about pirates of the "golden age" with Steve Hahn in Episode 87; and they came up again in, of all places, in the history told by trees in Episode 156 Probably the previous single best book about pirates in the "golden age", both factual and fictional, was David Cordingly, Under the Black Flag: The Romance and Reality of Life Among the Pirates (Random House, 1995) Marcus Rediker provides a view of pirates as proto-Bolsheviks in Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea and Villains of All Nations: Atlantic Pirates in the Golden Age; Peter T. Leeson describes them as highly rational market actors in The Invisible Hook: The Hidden Economics of Pirates And for more on one of the most curious episodes we talked about, see Robert C. Ritchie, Captain Kidd and the War against the Pirates–a great book There are a lot of bad editions of Charles Johnson, General History of the Robberies & Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates, but this is the best one until we can convince Richard Blakemore to produce an edited and annotated version.
