A rushed arrest, a collapsing case, and a sensational trial that put everyone on display.Part Two picks up immediately after the arrest of Clifford Hayes, the first man charged in the Hall Mills murders. We break down how police built a case on a coerced confession, why it quickly fell apart, and how Hayes was cleared while Raymond Schneider was convicted of perjury instead. From there, the investigation lurches forward through botched evidence, unreliable witnesses, and a courtroom spectacle that culminates in the infamous 1926 trial of Frances Hall and her family. We unpack the prosecution's theories, the defense's brutal dismantling of key testimony, and how the trial ultimately left the case exactly where it started, unresolved, controversial, and haunted by what might have been done differently.Edited by Maxwell Holechek

Welcome to this week's edition of Next on the Tee — where golf legends live and your game gets better. I truly appreciate you being here and pressing play. I'm really excited to share this episode with you because it features two wonderful friends—one who has been very dear to me for years and another new friend who I hope will be joining me many times going forward. Leading things off is Matthew Laurance, a longtime favorite of this show and someone I've been blessed to call a close friend. Many of you know Matthew from his iconic role as Sal Amatto, the fictional bass player in Eddie & the Cruisers—easily one of my all-time favorite movies. What started as a social media connection grew into appearances on Thursday Night Tailgate, and those conversations eventually turned into a genuine friendship. This time around, Matthew shares his thoughts on the direction the PGA Tour appears to be heading, which feels like a sharp turn away from the long-standing focus on “growing the game.” We also dive into why Seve became his all-time favorite player, his lingering disappointment from the 1986 Masters, and revisit stories from Eddie & the Cruisers—including what it's like for him when On the Dark Side comes on the radio while he's driving. In Segment 2, I'm thrilled to welcome Steve Strano for his Next on the Tee debut. Steve is the son of my gumba Rob Strano, so you know right away he's going to be a great guest. Steve is an entrepreneur who is helping to resurrect a legendary and nearly forgotten brand of putters. That brand is Otey Putters, which helped legends like Jimmy Demaret, Dr. Cary Middlecoff, Jackie Burke Jr., and Doug Ford win five Masters between 1947 and 1957. Steve's passion for Otey is contagious, and during our conversation, he had me completely fired up about these beautifully handcrafted putters, still made in their original factory in Selma, Alabama, by Otey Crisman III, the son of former PGA Tour pro Otey Crisman. You're going to love Steve's energy, his respect for the history of the brand, and the care that goes into every putter. Be sure to check them out at OteyThree.com. Thanks again for being here and for pressing play on this week's show. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed bringing it to you.

I love a good Christmas story. The kind where something strange and wonderful happens out in the wilderness. Where the magic of the season reaches places most people never go. Where even the darkest corners of the forest feel touched by something warm and old and meaningful.Over the years, I've told you stories like that.Stories of Sasquatch sightings on snowy December mornings.Of mysterious gifts left on remote cabin doorsteps.Of unexplained tracks leading to and from places where no tracks should exist at all.But tonight, friends, I'm not here to warm your heart.Tonight, I'm here to freeze your blood.South Carolina. 1985.A young insurance adjuster named Gerald Hutchins inherits a remote cabin deep in the forest from his great-uncle Amos. The old man had lived alone out there for more than twenty years, and the family whispered that he came back from the war… changed. Haunted. Given to muttering in languages no one recognized. Drawing strange symbols he would immediately burn in the fireplace.Gerald decides the cabin would be the perfect place to spend Christmas with his wife, Ellen, and their thirteen-year-old son, Marcus.A real holiday, he tells them. The kind they used to have before television and convenience took over. Just a family, a fire, and the quiet peace of the winter woods. What Gerald doesn't tell them is what he found when he first visited the cabin alone. The chains hanging above the fireplace. The birch switches stained dark with something he didn't want to examine too closely. And the mask. A horrible wooden mask with hollow eyes and a grin carved with far too many teeth. He doesn't tell them about the sound he heard coming from the second floor. The sound of hooves on hardwood. As Christmas Eve settles in, the temperature drops and the snow begins to fall. And the Hutchins family will learn that some traditions are older than Christianity. Some punishments are older than coal in a stocking. And some things that were meant to stay in the old country followed our ancestors across the ocean—hiding in the shadows of their ships, waiting patiently for the right moment to remind us that the old ways never truly died. They just learned how to wait.Long before Santa Claus became the jolly gift-giver we know today, the winter solstice was a time of fear as much as celebration in the Alpine regions of Europe. While Saint Nicholas rewarded good children, his dark companion dealt with the rest.Krampus. Half-goat. Half-demon. All nightmare. A creature with curved horns, a serpentine tongue, chains forged in hellfire, and birch switches for the wicked. A basket on its back to carry its prizes away—down to whatever hell it called home.Krampusnacht, celebrated on December fifth, saw young men dress as the creature and roam the streets, terrorizing towns. But the oldest stories—the ones whispered long before costumes—spoke of something far older than men in masks. A being that existed before Christianity tried to tame it. A being that still walks the winter forests when nights grow long and the barriers between worlds wear thin.A being that always comes back.Content Warning:This episode contains intense horror imagery, supernatural violence, and themes involving harm to a family, including a child. Listener discretion is strongly advised. This one is not for the faint of heart—and absolutely not for little ones. I've spent a long time telling stories about strange things in the woods. Bigfoot encounters. Unexplained phenomena. Creatures that linger just beyond the firelight. Even the scariest of those stories often carry a strange warmth—a sense that whatever's out there might be mysterious, might be frightening, but isn't necessarily evil. This story is different. This story is about something very evil.Something that has been doing terrible things to humanity for a very long time.Something that doesn't care about your Christmas spirit, your good intentions, or your prayers.I wanted to tell this story because I think we've sanitized our holidays. We've forgotten that our ancestors celebrated the winter solstice not just with feasts and gifts—but with rituals meant to protect them from the darkness. They understood something we've chosen to forget. The longest night of the year is the longest for a reason. So as you listen, maybe keep a candle burning.Maybe check the locks on your doors. And if you hear something on the roof that sounds a little too heavy to be reindeer…Well. You know what to do.Until next time…Sweet dreams. And Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas, Slackers! It's hard to believe, but this year marks the 35th anniversary of Home Alone, a film that remains one of the most fun (and durable) Christmas flicks. It is made that much more interesting with Macauley Culkin back on a press junket for this season of Fallout, along with the just completed Home Alone tour.We also lost several influential figures from film, television, and music in 2025. Legends like Gene Hackman and Ozzy Osbourne, icons like Val Kilmer, and the more recent and tragic passings of Rob Reiner and James Ransone.Getting back to the holiday festivities, let's take a look at the “hot gifts” of 1975, like Pet Rocks, Mood Rings, and the excitement around early Atari systems - and from 1985, with Teddy Ruxpin, Cabbage Patch Kids, and the first wave of Nintendo home gaming dominance. The episode closes with an overview of what's driving wish lists this Christmas in 2025 - the Nintendo Switch 2 leading the way, alongside interactive toys, viral collectibles, smart tech, cozy lifestyle items, and other high-demand gifts. Thanks for listening, and I wish you a warm, peaceful Christmas.
Did PTSD exist in the Old West, and if so, did it contribute to the violence of the frontier? Join me as we explore how trauma affected soldiers and civilians alike long before the condition had a name, from Civil War veterans suffering from what was once called soldiers' heart or Da Costa's syndrome to rising rates of alcoholism, domestic violence, and institutionalization across the United States. Using historical research, homicide statistics from frontier towns like Dodge City and San Francisco, and modern scholarship, we'll examine whether PTSD was a driving force behind Old West violence or one factor among many. And stick around to the end for another listener Q&A! We'll discuss Brushy Bill Roberts, Doc Scurlock, Henry Plummer, and the Montana vigilantes, along with reflections on notable Western films and books. In the final Scam Rangers episode of 2025, Ayelet Biger-Levin is joined by industry veteran Ken Palla for a deep year-in-review of the global scam prevention landscape. This conversation examines what actually happened in 2025 across regulation, enforcement, and industry action, and why 2026 must move decisively from research and recommendations to urgent execution. From mandatory reimbursement in the UK, to Australia's Scam Prevention Framework, emerging collaboration in Canada, and fragmented efforts in the United States, the episode cuts through policy language to focus on real-world impact. The discussion also outlines concrete actions financial institutions, telcos, and digital platforms can take now to better protect consumers, reduce losses, and treat scams as the organized crime and national security threat they are. This episode closes the year with a clear message. The research is done. The problem is understood. Now the industry must act.Topics Covered What 2025 revealed about the effectiveness of global scam regulation Where reimbursement models succeed and where they fall short Australia, the UK, Canada, and the US, lessons from different approaches Why execution, not new task forces or studies, is the real gap Urgent actions banks can take to prevent scams before money moves The role of telcos and digital platforms in stopping scams upstream Government, law enforcement, and the need for coordinated leadership Why 2026 must be treated as a year of action Guest :Ken PallaFormer cybersecurity executive at MUFG Union Bank, longtime industry advisor, and recipient of the Legends of Fraud Award. Ken has spent decades focused on online security, fraud prevention, and consumer protection, and is a leading voice on scam regulation and industry accountability.
