On January 6, 2007, Channon Christian (21) and Christopher Newsom (23) went on a date. They were young, in love, and planning to attend a friend's birthday party. They never arrived. What happened to Channon and Chris over the next 36 hours is known as one of the most brutal crime sprees in Tennessee history. But before we discuss the horror, we need to know who they were, the real people behind the headlines, the beloved children whose families would spend 18 years fighting for justice. This four-part series tells their complete story: the victims, the crimes, the trials, the judicial scandal that forced retrials, and the lasting legacy. In this episode, let's learn who Channon Gail Christian and Hugh Christopher Newsom Jr. were. Not as victims, but as the vibrant, beautiful people they were.Support ResourcesFor Survivors of Violence:https://www.rainn.org/ - RAINN (1-800-656-4673)https://www.thehotline.org/ - National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233)https://www.crisistextline.org/ - Crisis Text Line (Text HOME to 741741)https://988lifeline.org/ - 988 Suicide & Crisis LifelineFor Families of Murder Victims:https://www.pomc.org/ - Parents of Murdered Childrenhttps://victimsofcrime.org/ - National Center for Victims of Crimehttps://www.ncvc.org/ - National Crime Victim Law InstituteSources:https://www.newspapers.com/ (Historical archive - subscription required)https://www.knoxnews.com/ (Search "Christian Newsom" for extensive archive)https://abcnews.go.com/ (Search "Channon Christian")https://www.cnn.com/ (Coverage of trials and scandal)https://www.foxnews.com/ (Michelle Malkin coverage 2007)https://www.wbir.com/ (WBIR-TV extensive trial coverage)https://www.wate.com/ (WATE 6 On Your Side)https://www.wvlt.tv/ (WVLT Local 8 News)https://www.tncourts.gov/ (Tennessee State Courts)https://www.tsc.state.tn.us/ (Tennessee Supreme Court opinions)https://www.knoxcounty.org/criminal/ (Knox County Criminal Court)https://law.justia.com/cases/tennessee/ (Tennessee case law database)https://scholar.google.com/ (Search: "State v. In May of 2002, a St. Louis reporter received a letter with a map marked with an X and a chilling message: "To prove I'm real, here's directions to number seventeen." The map leads police to a body. And one digital mistake exposed a killer's darkest secrets. Between 2000 and 2002, at least twelve women vanished from the streets of St. Louis, their deaths barely noticed by a society that had already dismissed them. What investigators found in a suburban basement would out one of the most disturbing serial killers in American history.Sources:https://www.stltoday.com/ (Main site - archival articles from 2002)https://www.nytimes.com/2002/06/11/us/internet-used-to-find-man-who-is-charged-in-2-of-10-killings.htmlhttps://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2002-jun-17-na-serial17-story.htmlhttps://abcnews.go.com/Primetime/story?id=132005&page=1 (Serial Killer's Home Movies)https://abcnews.go.com/US/woman-found-serial-killer-lived-home-watching-tv/story?id=24467447https://www.bnd.com/news/local/crime/article311186715.htmlhttps://fox2now.com/news/true-crime/serial-killer-maury-travis-the-street-walker-strangler/https://www.semissourian.com/story/77256.htmlForensic Files: "X Marks the Spot" (Season 7, Episode 35) - Available on streaming platformsCold Case Files: "A Map to Murder" (Season 2, Episode 19) - Originally aired on A&EEvil, I: "Hell's Basement" episodeUnknown Serial Killers of America (2025)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maury_Travishttps://web.archive.org/web/20120509185024/http://www.trutv.com/library/crime/criminal_mind/forensics/vernon_geberth/12.htmlhttps://www.fbi.gov/https://isp.illinois.gov/https://www.slmpd.org/https://nij.ojp.gov/topics/forensics/digital-evidencehttps://dnadoeproject.org/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/reverie-true-crime--4442888/support.Keep In Touch:Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/reveriecrimepodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/reverietruecrimeTumblr: https://reverietruecrimepodcast.tumblr.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/reverietruecrimeContact: ReverieTrueCrime@gmail.com Intro & Outro by Jahred Gomes: https://www.instagram.com/jahredgomes_official

Several murders have been dubbed “the crime of the century," but the Lindbergh kidnapping case of 1932 might actually deserve the title. According to some, it shaped the culture of conspiracy theories in America. Was Bruno Richard Hauptmann really guilty, or was he framed? Did he have co-conspirators? Or was the crime perpetrated by the victim's own father: the American icon with a dark side, Charles Lindbergh Sr.? If you enjoy this episode, you might also like The Death of Ned Doheny—a case that revolves around a powerful family, and that remains a source of rumor and speculation. Comedian Atsuko Okatsuka’s last meal, and the reason why she sometimes carries cooked scallops in her bag, trace back to her unstable, unpredictable childhood. She talks about being kidnapped by her grandmother and why a gluten-free spaghetti dinner brings her comfort, even as someone who doesn’t have a gluten sensitivity. Atsuko’s first foray into entertainment was working at an ice cream chain that made employees sing and dance for tips. Atsuko loved it, but host Rachel Belle interviews two other folks who had no idea they had to perform at their restaurant jobs, until they saw it happening on their first day. One at Chicago’s famous Wiener’s Circle and another at a now-defunct steak house chain. Atsuko is on tour now! You can also watch her standup specials on HBO and Hulu. In this episode of Fic Clique, your hosts discuss "Where the Dead Live" by mirabella on dreamwidth (Inception), "three's a crowd" by ctimene (Formula 1 RPF), "The Seal Song" by Blackeyed_blackeyed (Original Fiction), and "A Cabin in the Woods" by Nightwalker (The Avengers). We also explore what makes horror so beloved as a genre in the first place, diving into horror as parable, subversion of expectations, catharsis, social and moral commentary, response to global crisis, queer allegory, and more.
Greed and addiction fueled a chaotic and coldblooded crime on September 28, 1953. The largest ransom request in American History at the time was demanded of Kansas City's wealthiest automobile dealer, Robert Greenlease, in exchange for his 6 year old son and namesake, Bobby Greenlease. Money wasn't the problem and the Greenleases' wasted no time to comply, it should have been cut and dry, but it is far from it. Text a Message to the ShowIt's that time of year again to talk about those spooky stories and things that go bump in the night. This time we're looking at San Francisco and talking to friend of the show, JIm Dudley. Jim has been on the show multiple times and just to remind you he's a retired deputy chief from the San Francisco PD with over 30 years experience, he teaches at San Francisco State University, and hosts the Policing Matters podcast. Even though Jim and I both share the opinion that most spooky things can be easily explained by natural causes, that doesn't mean we haven't had a few moments that give you pause as you sort out what this means.Music is by Brian BolgerHey Chaplain Podcast Bonus Episode 46Tags:Halloween, Aliens, CIT, Chainsaws, Community Policing, Costumes, Drugs, Ghosts, Hauntings, Holidays, Kidnapping, Patrol, Police, Spooky, Superstitions, Warlocks, San Francisco, CaliforniaSupport the showThanks for Listening! A van door slides open at midnight and two strangers say she isn't going home. That moment—engineered by her parents—sent Jacine into a notorious WWASP “behavioral program” in Mexico where abuse and brainwashing replaced help. We go where most stories don't. Jacine Jadresko breaks down how she hacked punitive level systems as a teen, the toll it took, and why high-functioning addiction hid in plain sight for years. She shares two fentanyl overdoses, the mindset shift that ended heroin, and the unglamorous habits that keep her steady. Then we step into the Amazon: earning hunters' respect, learning to mix plant poisons, blow-darting a monkey on the first try, and tasting the difference between survival and spectacle. This is a story of pure survival, never heard before. Buckle up for this one, you will have your jaw open the entire time.To learn more and follow Jacine on her world travels and adventure, give her a follow: https://www.instagram.com/jacineunseen/If you're drawn to stories of survival that become maps, this one's for you: how to build a simple business that buys your time, how to trust your instincts without worshiping fear, and how to choose a life wide enough to hold the past without letting it steer. 402-521-3080In this conversation, Stephanie Olson and Rebecca Saunders explore the complexities and misconceptions surrounding human trafficking. They react to various media portrayals, debunk myths about age and vulnerability, and share cautionary tales for job seekers. The discussion emphasizes the importance of awareness, intuition, and understanding the realities of trafficking beyond sensationalized narratives.takeawaysHuman trafficking is often misunderstood and misrepresented in media.Grooming is a common tactic used by traffickers, rather than outright kidnapping. All age groups can be victims of trafficking, not just children.Vulnerable populations, including those with mental health issues, are at risk.Job seekers should be cautious of red flags during interviews.Intuition plays a crucial role in recognizing potentially dangerous situations.Misconceptions about trafficking can lead to fear and misinformation.Target and similar stores are often wrongly associated with trafficking incidents.Trafficking can occur without physical transportation of victims. It's important to define trafficking accurately to understand its implications.Sound Bites"Human trafficking is a business.""All ages are being trafficked.""Pay attention to your intuition."Chapters00:00 Introduction to Reaction Videos on Human Trafficking01:35 Debunking Myths About Human Trafficking in Public Spaces10:07 Understanding the Grooming Process in Trafficking12:29 The Reality of Kidnapping and Trafficking13:59 Exploring Trafficking of Older Adults15:38 Clarifying Misconceptions About Trafficking and Transportation20:15 Addressing Vulnerabilities and Misconceptions in Trafficking21:55 Understanding Trafficking Risks Across Age Groups28:10 The Complexity of Human Trafficking28:58 Job Seekers and Trafficking Awareness33:08 Red Flags in Job Interviews40:25 Final Thoughts on Safety and Vigilance42:18 R&R Outro.mp4Support the showEveryone has resilience, but what does that mean, and how do we use it in life and leadership? 72 year old Charles Ross was a year into his peaceful retirement after a lucrative career in real estate, followed by President of the prominent George S. Carrington greeting card company, when he found himself at the wrong place at the wrong time just outside of Chicago. John Seadlund, who'd been influenced by John Dillinger's gang member Tommy Carroll and who had evaded the FBI for years, stole much more than Ross's golden years leading FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover to manage the investigation personally. The case would earn Seadlund the nickname “The Nation's Cruelest Criminal”. Throughout the twentieth century, few names loomed as large in the business and financial worlds as John Paul Getty. Once the richest man in the world, Getty made his fortune in the oil industry and an avid art collector, with a massive collection that served as a basis for the Getty Museum, the wealthiest museum in the world. Getty's wealth and business acumen made him a household name well beyond his death in 1976; however, that same wealth and notoriety made him a target for con artists and other criminals. Among those who sought to extort the Getty family, no attempt was more incredible and sensational than the kidnapping of Getty's favorite grandchild, J. Paul Getty III, by an Italian crime syndicate in 1973.At first, the scion of the Getty family refused to negotiate with kidnappers, arguing that, if he paid the money, they would only kidnap other members of this family. But Getty reconsidered his position just a few weeks later, when his grandson's ear arrived in the mail, with the promise of other body parts, should he not comply with their demands.ReferencesAssociated Press. 1973. By the early 1900s Frederick Weyerhaeuser was known as the “Lumber King” and had amassed a fortune in the Pacific Northwest. The wealth generated from his timber empire was on par with the Rockefellers, the Carnegies, and the Vanderbilts and as it kept getting passed down to the next generation, it kept growing. But it also made his family a target, specifically his great grandson George Weyerhaeuser, in what turned out to be one of the most bizarre kidnappings in American History. This week, Jason is joined by author, entrepreneur, professor, and most notably former member of the FBI, known as the mast negotiator, Chris Voss! Chris earned that title throughout his time serving as the lead crisis negotiator for the New York City division of the FBI, and then as FBI's Chief International Hostage and Kidnapping negotiator. In 2008, after spending 24 years and working 150 international hostage cases for the FBI, Chris founded the Black Swan group which serves as a consulting and training agency for both businesses and individuals on negotiating skills. He has also published several NYT bestselling books. The former FBI hostage negotiator pulls back the curtain on the art and science of high-stakes communication. Chris breaks down his thoughts on President Trump's negotiation tactics, explains what an “accusation audit” is and why it's so effective, and shares how he reacts when others use his own techniques against him. He dives into knowing when to walk away, why every interaction should end on a high note, and what to do when you're being ghosted. Chris also brings his negotiation expertise into everyday life—offering strategies for navigating dating, marriage, and divorce, the power of telling the truth, and why curiosity can be a superpower when dealing with tight-lipped people. He reveals how a kidnapping hostage negotiation unfolds, the cost of a bad deal, why trusting your gut matters, and his best tips for negotiating your salary. Chris reveals all this and so much more in another episode you can't afford to miss! Rikk and Chris take you deep inside the intense world of DEA and island operations, where every decision could mean life or death. From heart-pounding shootouts to the unseen psychological toll of pulling the trigger, Rikk shares his earliest encounters with violence in law enforcement and the crucial role of agency support after traumatic incidents. The conversation then transports listeners to the island of St. Croix, where the DEA waged war against drug traffickers in daring missions like Operation Limpia Casa and Operation Beach Party. These missions weren't just about chasing cartel leaders—they revealed the ingenuity, grit, and resourcefulness required to outsmart criminals in unpredictable environments.
