In this conversation we speak with Ed Vogel from Southerners Against Surveillance Systems & Infrastructure about the rapid expansion of various police surveillance programs. We talk about the nexus of private corporations, policing agencies, and nonprofit foundations and organizations that facilitate the expansion of these technologies and how they seek to circumvent democratic processes and oversight mechanisms. Ottis Elwood Toole claimed to have murdered over one hundred people. While that number remains disputed, what we know for certain is horrifying enough. Six confirmed kills. A partnership with fellow serial killer Henry Lee Lucas that terrorized the American South. And quite possibly the most infamous child murder in American history. Born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1947, Toole emerged from a childhood so brutal it defies comprehension. Sexual abuse by his father starting at age five. A mother who dressed him in girl's clothing and paraded him around as the daughter she wished she'd had. A grandmother who took him on midnight trips to rob graves. Every adult in his life either exploited him or looked the other way.None of that excuses what he became.Toole drifted through the 1970s leaving a trail of suspicion across multiple states. He was a suspect in murders in Nebraska and Colorado before fleeing back to Florida each time. In 1976, he met Henry Lee Lucas at a Jacksonville soup kitchen, and the two formed a killing partnership that would span years and cross state lines.But it was the 1981 murder of six-year-old Adam Walsh that would make Toole's name infamous. Toole confessed to abducting the boy from a Hollywood, Florida Sears store, then recanted, then confessed again. This pattern continued for years while the Hollywood Police Department systematically lost every piece of physical evidence that could have secured a conviction. The bloodstained carpet from his car. The machete. The car itself. All gone.Toole died in prison in 1996 without ever being charged in the Walsh case. It took until 2008 for police to officially name him as Adam's killer. This episode examines how a man with a lengthy criminal history and an IQ of 75 managed to evade justice for so long. We explore the systemic failures that allowed him to keep killing, the victims whose names deserve to be remembered, and the legacy of one father's grief that changed how America searches for missing children. The Jacksonville Cannibal is a story about monsters. But more importantly, it's a story about the cracks in our system that allow monsters to thrive.

Jessica Buchanan was a schoolteacher from Ohio who followed a calling to serve overseas. That calling led her to East Africa, meaningful humanitarian work, and eventually into one of the most terrifying experiences imaginable. Jessica shares the full story of how she was kidnapped in Somalia, held hostage in the desert for 93 days, and ultimately rescued by SEAL Team Six. She opens up about the moments leading up to her capture, the role intuition tried to play, what captivity was really like, and how she survived mentally when survival felt impossible. We also talk about the aftermath from PTSD, rebuilding identity, motherhood, faith, and what it means to “survive survival.”

(This episode was recorded before the tragic murder of ICU nurse Alex Pretti by ICE in Minneapolis today). On Tuesday, ICE detained a 5 year old boy in Minneapolis. They grabbed him in the driveway of his home after he came home from pre-school, and used him as bait to capture his father. He has now been kidnapped by ICE, and is being held with his father inside an ICE facility in Texas, likely inside the notorious cages we've seen so many pictures of. On this episode of The Siren Podcast, Jo is joined by Miles Taylor, founder of DEFIANCE.org. Miles told us some shocking details about Stephen Miller's role in ICE's kidnapping of children, and how their cruelty here is intentional: “You what was Stephen Miller trying to do? And what I was told, and this is again, early days of the Trump administration, what I was told is there were plans at the White House to implement a deliberate policy of child separation at the border to rip a kid away from a parent as a means of deterrence, so that if you were thinking about coming to this country, you would think twice because the US government would rip your child from you. So it was intentional.” Liam Ramos is just one of at least four children, all from the same school district, who have been detained this month by ICE, according to school officials. The knee-jerk reaction of MAGA and the Trump regime was to call this five year old child an “illegal alien.” Yes, a five year old. According to Marc Prokosch, the family's lawyer, “They came properly. They came legally, and are pursuing a legal pathway.” But honestly, talking about their legal status isn't important anymore. Because ICE doesn't care who is and isn't a U.S. citizen. Last Sunday, ICE broke down the door of an elderly Hmong immigrant and naturalized U.S. citizen with no criminal record. They brought him outside in the freezing cold with no clothes on, and proceeded to drive him around before realizing he was a U.S. citizen. All in front of his now traumatized grandson. We've also seen ICE tackling and pepper spraying journalists and pregnant mothers, all of whom are citizens. And of course, ICE shot Renee Nicole Good in broad daylight, and then proceeded to deny her medical care for eight minutes while she died. And now, an ICE whistleblower has leaked a secret memo written by ICE leadership, meant to be hidden from the public, detailing how ICE agents were verbally given the ability to violate the fourth amendment, saying agents can “forcibly enter into certain people's homes without a judicial warrant.” And get this: Even DHS's own training materials say this is directly unconstitutional.
