United Nations officials have condemned mass killings by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan's el-Fasher. UN officials have warned the UN Security Council that the city has "descended into an even darker hell". The RSF took over el-Fasher, capital of North Darfur state, on Sunday after forcing Sudan's army to withdraw from its last stronghold in the western Darfur region. The paramilitary force has been accused of ethnic killings since its power struggle with the army erupted into violence in April 2023, but the RSF leadership has consistently denied the accusations - although this week its leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo admitted to the violations in el-Fasher. Meanwhile , the World health Organisation says it has received reports that more than 450 civilians in a hospital in the Sudanese City of Al Fasher. BBC's Jeremy Bowen reports
Greed and addiction fueled a chaotic and coldblooded crime on September 28, 1953. The largest ransom request in American History at the time was demanded of Kansas City's wealthiest automobile dealer, Robert Greenlease, in exchange for his 6 year old son and namesake, Bobby Greenlease. Money wasn't the problem and the Greenleases' wasted no time to comply, it should have been cut and dry, but it is far from it. Text a Message to the ShowIt's that time of year again to talk about those spooky stories and things that go bump in the night. This time we're looking at San Francisco and talking to friend of the show, JIm Dudley. Jim has been on the show multiple times and just to remind you he's a retired deputy chief from the San Francisco PD with over 30 years experience, he teaches at San Francisco State University, and hosts the Policing Matters podcast. Even though Jim and I both share the opinion that most spooky things can be easily explained by natural causes, that doesn't mean we haven't had a few moments that give you pause as you sort out what this means.Music is by Brian BolgerHey Chaplain Podcast Bonus Episode 46Tags:Halloween, Aliens, CIT, Chainsaws, Community Policing, Costumes, Drugs, Ghosts, Hauntings, Holidays, Kidnapping, Patrol, Police, Spooky, Superstitions, Warlocks, San Francisco, CaliforniaSupport the showThanks for Listening! A van door slides open at midnight and two strangers say she isn't going home. That moment—engineered by her parents—sent Jacine into a notorious WWASP “behavioral program” in Mexico where abuse and brainwashing replaced help. We go where most stories don't. Jacine Jadresko breaks down how she hacked punitive level systems as a teen, the toll it took, and why high-functioning addiction hid in plain sight for years. She shares two fentanyl overdoses, the mindset shift that ended heroin, and the unglamorous habits that keep her steady. Then we step into the Amazon: earning hunters' respect, learning to mix plant poisons, blow-darting a monkey on the first try, and tasting the difference between survival and spectacle. This is a story of pure survival, never heard before. Buckle up for this one, you will have your jaw open the entire time.To learn more and follow Jacine on her world travels and adventure, give her a follow: https://www.instagram.com/jacineunseen/If you're drawn to stories of survival that become maps, this one's for you: how to build a simple business that buys your time, how to trust your instincts without worshiping fear, and how to choose a life wide enough to hold the past without letting it steer. Episode 97: Weapons Just in time for a Halloween Spooktacular, the gang is back for Season 5 of Philosophy in Film, and the reel's already spinning! First up in the tray: Zach Cregger's eerie ensemble horror Weapons (2025), where seventeen schoolchildren vanish at 2:17 a.m., forcing a town to ask: what if the monster isn't outside, but inside the story? In search of answers, Craig sounds the alarm with Producer's Notes (8:31) while Alain opens the Beauclair Synopsis (17:23), laying out the tangled threads of characters, each chasing a truth they're too afraid to face. Chris slips into Philosopher's Corner (42:55), tracing the film's vanishings through a dim reflection of screens and silence, where the real horror may be what we've grown used to losing. At The Round Table (42:40), the gang wrangles the question: Is Weapons a cautionary mirror or a funhouse for our fears? Later, Reviews (1:10:48) and Mailbag (1:24:41) let our audience testify in the court of shared dread. As always, we reflect on the philosophical and non-philosophical fissures the film fractures open, because in a town where the children vanish, silence becomes just another weapon.

Based On True Crime Stories - "Cold Case Investigators Series" by Merrill VaughanFeatured Book - The Happy Paperhanger" For over five years, an individual has been writing checks that do not have sufficient funds in the accounts. He is able to obtain state driver's licenses that he uses to open checking accounts with just enough money to keep the accounts open. He does not really steal other people's identification; he just makes up the names that he uses. For over five years, he has cost communities in Southern California thousands of dollars and has caused police departments to run in circles trying to catch him. That is, until one police department calls in the Cold Case Investigators to assist them. It is through a serious mistake on the part of the check writer that he is finally caught by one of the private investigators.Born in 1949, Merrill Vaughan spent his formative years in Monrovia and Duarte, California. He graduated from Duarte High School in 1967 and went on to attend Pasadena City College and Citrus Junior College, earning his degree in 1971. Shortly after, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on November 26, 1971, serving at various stateside bases and completing multiple overseas assignments in Thailand, Greece, Hawaii, Germany, Denmark, and Honduras. Merrill retired in June 1993 and transitioned to work with the State of Wyoming's Human Resources Division for three years.Despite facing disabilities that prevented him from returning to work, Merrill remained actively involved with several veterans organizations until his move to New Hampshire in 2004. In his new community of Pittsfield, he engaged in local governance, serving on committees such as the Budget Committee, Master Plan Committee, and as Chair of the Ethics Committee. In 2007, he was appointed as the town representative to the Concord Regional CrimeLine, a position he still holds. Additionally, Merrill became a substitute teacher at the local middle and high school, teaching various subjects until his retirement in 2020. He maintains connections with several former students. In 2008, Merrill pursued a lifelong dream by enrolling at Franklin Pierce University, where he graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science degree in General Studies. He now serves on the Franklin Pierce University Alumni Board of Directors. It was during his teaching career that Merrill began jotting down ideas for a potential short story. Over five years, these notes evolved into his first book, The Kidnapping, which has since become part of the Cold Case Investigators series, with a sequel titled The Happy Paper Hanger, and a new addition, The Prostitute Killer.Merrill resides in Pittsfield, NH, with his wife, Diane, and is continuing to write new additions to his series.AMAZONhttps://merrillvaughan.comhttps://www.ecpublishingllc.comhttp://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/9425mvec.mp3 Other Books in the Cold Case Investigators SeriesCOLD CASE INVESTIGATORS: THE KIDNAPPINGCOLD CASE INVESTIGATORS: THE PROSTITUTE KILLERhttps://merrillvaughan.com/
72 year old Charles Ross was a year into his peaceful retirement after a lucrative career in real estate, followed by President of the prominent George S. Carrington greeting card company, when he found himself at the wrong place at the wrong time just outside of Chicago. John Seadlund, who'd been influenced by John Dillinger's gang member Tommy Carroll and who had evaded the FBI for years, stole much more than Ross's golden years leading FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover to manage the investigation personally. The case would earn Seadlund the nickname “The Nation's Cruelest Criminal”. Throughout the twentieth century, few names loomed as large in the business and financial worlds as John Paul Getty. Once the richest man in the world, Getty made his fortune in the oil industry and an avid art collector, with a massive collection that served as a basis for the Getty Museum, the wealthiest museum in the world. Getty's wealth and business acumen made him a household name well beyond his death in 1976; however, that same wealth and notoriety made him a target for con artists and other criminals. Among those who sought to extort the Getty family, no attempt was more incredible and sensational than the kidnapping of Getty's favorite grandchild, J. Paul Getty III, by an Italian crime syndicate in 1973.At first, the scion of the Getty family refused to negotiate with kidnappers, arguing that, if he paid the money, they would only kidnap other members of this family. But Getty reconsidered his position just a few weeks later, when his grandson's ear arrived in the mail, with the promise of other body parts, should he not comply with their demands.ReferencesAssociated Press. 1973. By the early 1900s Frederick Weyerhaeuser was known as the “Lumber King” and had amassed a fortune in the Pacific Northwest. The wealth generated from his timber empire was on par with the Rockefellers, the Carnegies, and the Vanderbilts and as it kept getting passed down to the next generation, it kept growing. But it also made his family a target, specifically his great grandson George Weyerhaeuser, in what turned out to be one of the most bizarre kidnappings in American History. In this hard-hitting episode, Lee exposes the reality behind what politicians and media call “mostly peaceful” protests. From the trafficking of children from Central America by cartels to politically motivated attacks on ICE agents, we break down the human, legal, and political stakes. Lee dissects how Democrats attempt to normalize violent street crime, scrutinizes Lindsey Graham's contradictions in funding Jack Smith's investigation, and examines the dangerous implications of political double standards in America today.
This week, Jason is joined by author, entrepreneur, professor, and most notably former member of the FBI, known as the mast negotiator, Chris Voss! Chris earned that title throughout his time serving as the lead crisis negotiator for the New York City division of the FBI, and then as FBI's Chief International Hostage and Kidnapping negotiator. In 2008, after spending 24 years and working 150 international hostage cases for the FBI, Chris founded the Black Swan group which serves as a consulting and training agency for both businesses and individuals on negotiating skills. He has also published several NYT bestselling books. The former FBI hostage negotiator pulls back the curtain on the art and science of high-stakes communication. Chris breaks down his thoughts on President Trump's negotiation tactics, explains what an “accusation audit” is and why it's so effective, and shares how he reacts when others use his own techniques against him. He dives into knowing when to walk away, why every interaction should end on a high note, and what to do when you're being ghosted. Chris also brings his negotiation expertise into everyday life—offering strategies for navigating dating, marriage, and divorce, the power of telling the truth, and why curiosity can be a superpower when dealing with tight-lipped people. He reveals how a kidnapping hostage negotiation unfolds, the cost of a bad deal, why trusting your gut matters, and his best tips for negotiating your salary. Chris reveals all this and so much more in another episode you can't afford to miss! Rikk and Chris take you deep inside the intense world of DEA and island operations, where every decision could mean life or death. From heart-pounding shootouts to the unseen psychological toll of pulling the trigger, Rikk shares his earliest encounters with violence in law enforcement and the crucial role of agency support after traumatic incidents. The conversation then transports listeners to the island of St. Croix, where the DEA waged war against drug traffickers in daring missions like Operation Limpia Casa and Operation Beach Party. These missions weren't just about chasing cartel leaders—they revealed the ingenuity, grit, and resourcefulness required to outsmart criminals in unpredictable environments.
We're starting the morning with a story that'll make your blood boil. Don speaks with a man who was detained, let's be real, kidnapped, by ICE and held for hours. The kicker? He's an American citizen. So much for the whole “we're only going after criminals here illegally” narrative. Yeah… that's not true. Then, Don shares his interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. It's a powerful and personal conversation about her new book, life since the election, and what keeps her grounded amid all the chaos. 1 / 4 MDJ Script/ Top Stories for October 8th Publish Date: October 8th Commercial: From the BG Ad Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Wednesday, October 8th and Happy Birthday to R.L. Stine I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal 1. Man falsely accused of Walmart kidnapping reportedly seeking $25 million in damages 2. Atlanta tenor Timothy Miller launches St. Catherine’s community concert series on Oct. 19 3. Roger Hines publishes debut book All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: INGLES 7 STORY 1: Man falsely accused of Walmart kidnapping reportedly seeking $25 million in damages Mahendra Patel just wanted to help. That’s what he thought he was doing back in March at a Walmart in Acworth—helping a woman he assumed was disabled, struggling to manage two kids in a motorized cart. Instead, he was accused of trying to kidnap her child. What followed was a nightmare: Patel was arrested, denied bond, and spent 46 days in jail. He lost 17 pounds, endured threats from inmates, and was denied his medication. All for what? A misunderstanding. Surveillance footage later cleared his name, showing Patel calmly shopping, finding Tylenol, and leaving the store. Now, he’s suing Acworth for $25 million. STORY 2: Atlanta tenor Timothy Miller launches St. Catherine’s community concert series on Oct. 19 Mark your calendars: local tenor Timothy Miller will take the stage at St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church in Marietta on Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. as part of The Friends of Music concert series. You’ve probably heard Miller’s powerful voice before—maybe during the seventh-inning stretch at a Braves game, belting out “God Bless America.” But his talent goes far beyond that. From Verdi’s Aida to Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, and even Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Miller’s resume is as impressive as it is diverse. The concert is free (yes, free!), with donations welcome. No tickets needed—just show up early for a good seat. STORY 3: Roger Hines publishes debut book 2 / 4 Roger Hines has released his first book, The Hard and the Beautiful: Life in a Family of Seventeen Children, and it’s as heartfelt as the title suggests. In this memoir, Hines—child number 16 of 17—paints a vivid picture of growing up in rural Mississippi. Life was tough: tenant farms, cotton fields, and the weight of poverty. But it was also rich, thanks to faith, laughter, and the unshakable love of his parents, Walter and Levie Hines. “Poverty doesn’t have to be a dead end,” Hines says. “We were poor, but we were rich in all the ways that matter.” The book is available now on Amazon and at local retailers. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We’ll be right back. Break: INGLES 7 STORY 4: Police: Intoxicated man made false bomb threat at Johnnie MacCracken’s James E. Lusk, 29, of Marietta, allegedly called in a fake bomb threat to Johnnie MacCracken’s Celtic Firehouse Pub late on Sept. 26—because, according to police, he was drunk and angry. Not exactly a great combo. The arrest warrant also claims Lusk grabbed a woman by the arm during the incident, leaving her in pain. He was arrested three days later and charged with simple battery, false public alarm, and filing a false crime report. Lusk spent a few hours in the Cobb County jail before being released on Sept. 30 on a $10,000 bond. STORY 5: Home Depot hosts Kidde’s Cause for Alarm Home Safety Event On Oct. 4, Kidde teamed up with The Home Depot and iHeartMedia to host a lively fire safety event at The Home Depot on Roswell Road in Marietta. Part of Kidde’s Cause For Alarm campaign, the day was all about raising awareness for fire and carbon monoxide safety—and making homes safer, one alarm at a time. The event kicked off with a Donation Drive-Thru “parade,” complete with fire trucks, gear, and local firefighters from Sandy Springs. Families enjoyed music, food, giveaways, and even met Homer, The Home Depot mascot. The goal? Donate up to $1 million in alarms. Break: 3 / 4 STORY 6: Liberty joins the lineup: Cobb County’s newest K-9 embarks on duty Meet Liberty, the newest (and furriest) member of the Cobb County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit. She’s an 11-month-old bloodhound with a nose for tracking—whether it’s missing people or suspects. But don’t let her serious skills fool you; she’s still a puppy at heart, with a love for stuffed animals (or, honestly, anything she can shred). Liberty is partnered with Deputy Barry Bales, a 17-year veteran who previously worked with K-9 Shax, now retired. “Liberty’s tracking abilities will be a huge asset,” said Sheriff Craig Owens. Expect to see her out and about soon—sniffing, serving, and stealing hearts. STORY 7: Marietta Square gets a seasonal makeover The Marietta Square’s looking a little creepier (and a lot more creative) this October, thanks to the 22nd annual Scarecrows on the Square competition. Local businesses, schools, nonprofits, and just plain crafty Marietta folks have all joined in, decking out scarecrows with everything from humor to heart. Judging happens this week, with winners—Best in Show and category champs—announced at HarvestFest on Oct. 18. HarvestFest kicks off at 9 a.m. in Glover Park, featuring arts and crafts, a pie-eating contest, costumes, and kid-friendly fun. We’ll have closing comments after this. The Lindbergh family discovers the fate of little baby Charlie, but it takes 2 more years for investigators to follow the ransom money to the Bronx, New York to Bruno Richard Hautmann, who they labeled the kidnapper. In January of 1935 the suspect faced a sensational trial packed with journalists and celebrities, while the general public sat by the radio hanging every word of the case being called “the crime of the century”. The frenzied trial cast serious questions about the accused kidnappers' possible guilt and continues to fuel theories and speculation today. For over a decade, residents of a quiet Swiss village reported encounters with a figure in a gas mask and military cloak lurking in their forests—until 2013, when someone finally captured proof on camera. Days after the photo went viral, investigators found only an abandoned coat and a cryptic suicide note in the woods, leaving more questions than answers about who Le Loyon really was.Join the DARKNESS SYNDICATE for the ad-free version: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateTake the WEIRD DARKNESS LISTENER SURVEY and help mold the future of the podcast: https://weirddarkness.com/surveyIN THIS EPISODE: Nellie Meunch was accused of kidnapping. Her ingenious scheme to beat the charges? To kidnap again. (Kidnapping, Babies, and Blackmail) *** Before we knew it as tuberculosis, most knew it as consumption – and it was almost always fatal, with those who had it seemingly being consumed by the disease, which is probably how it got its name. So it should be no surprise that homes where the disease took up residence were devastated, and whether or not they are haunted by the paranormal, they are certainly haunted by the dark memories and energies of those who were consumed there. Including one particular home a doctor in 1915 will describe for us. (Consumption Cottage) *** Norfolk's Horning Village is not your typical residential area of living – the village slips back and forth in time every five years. And one family knows that's true, because they were stuck in one of the time slips. (Timeslip Village) *** When fans of the paranormal hear the name ‘Rendlesham', the first thing that springs to mind is an incident that happened over three nights around Christmas 1980, when it was said that several spaceships visited the nearby airbase. What they don't think of is Ariel the mermaid, or Daryl Hannah from the movie “Splash”. But maybe they should. (The Mermaid of Rendlesham) *** Isabella of France is a fantastically interesting historic figure, even more so because of how little-known she is. You'd think a queen who was known as a she-wolf would be something you might have read about in history class. (Isabella: She-Wolf of England) *** But first, the figure, who is known as 'Le Loyon' has been called Switzerland's answer to the Loch Ness Monster, wears a military uniform and a thick cloak, with a gas mask covering his or her face. Who or what is he? We begin with that story.
