March 1, 1932. East Amwell Township, New Jersey. 20-month old Charles Lindbergh Jr., the son of renowned aviator Charles Lindbergh, is abducted from his crib in the nursery of his home and a note is left behind demanding a $50,000 ransom for the baby's safe return. Even though the ransom is eventually paid out to an unidentified man at a cemetery in the Bronx, the child is not returned and his body is found in a wooded area located just over four miles from the Lindbergh residence. His cause of death is a fractured skull and it is believed that he was killed on the very same night he was kidnapped. Over two years later, a suspect named Bruno Richard Hauptmann is charged, convicted and executed for the child's murder. However, some people believe that Hauptmann was railroaded and even though nearly a century has passed, there is still a lot of controversy and debate surrounding one of the most famous cases of all time. To commemorate the milestone of our ten-year anniversary as a podcast, “The Trail Went Cold” will be presenting our very first special four-part episode and exploring the crime known as the “Lindbergh Baby Kidnapping”. During our first three episodes, we shared all the relevant facts and numerous theories surrounding the case and in our final chapter this week, Part Four, we will be providing our own personal analysis to determine where we believe Bruno Richard Hauptmann was actually guilty of this crime or if the real perpetrator got away with it or if the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Alors que le président guinéen Mamadi Doumbouya est censé rentrer ce vendredi 6 mars 2026 à Conakry, trois semaines après avoir été vu pour la dernière fois au sommet de l'Union africaine, les populations guinéennes vivent toujours au rythme des kidnappings. À date, près d'une vingtaine de personnes sont toujours portées disparues. Mardi dernier, c'est la mère et la soeur d'un ancien ministre en exil qui ont été enlevées en soirée, chez elles, par des hommes cagoulés et en uniformes militaires. Une enquête a été ouverte pour « enlèvements, séquestration de personnes et association de malfaiteurs ». Car désormais, les rapts visent les membres de la famille à défaut d'atteindre les opposants et militants en exil. Abdoul Sacko est le coordinateur national du Forum des forces sociales de Guinée. Lui-même a été kidnappé l'an dernier, torturé et abandonné dans la nature trois jours plus tard. Il vit désormais en exil, où il se soigne. Abdoul Sacko est notre grand invité Afrique, il répond à Sidy Yansané.  RFI : Il y a un peu plus de deux semaines, vous avez pris la parole pour, disons, commémorer l'enlèvement que vous avez-vous-même subi un an auparavant. Aujourd'hui, le général Mamadi Doumbouya est officiellement élu président. Comment décririez-vous la situation en Guinée aujourd'hui ? Abdoul Sacko : Je pense que c'est juste l'expression d'une tristesse qui dépasse les commentaires. Je suis attristé par rapport à l'image sombre que cette situation renvoie de la Guinée. Ce peuple, qui a pris son Indépendance avec maturité républicaine par le vote référendaire autour des principes de liberté et de dignité, voit aujourd'hui que la vie humaine est absolument insignifiante et que l'État n'a aucune possibilité de lui garantir ni justice ni sécurité à l'intérieur du pays. Ce qui m'attriste le plus, c'est le regret de constater que le peuple de Guinée n'a pas de partenaire véritable. Je veux parler de la Cédéao, de l'Union africaine, de la France, de l'Union européenne et d'autres avec lesquels nous avons en partage des valeurs et des vertus démocratiques. Seulement ces partenaires s'accommodent à toutes les formes de violations des droits humains dans le seul but de se procurer les ressources du pays. Au moment de leur coup d'État le 5 septembre 2021, ces jeunes officiers ont déclaré qu'ils voulaient rectifier les erreurs commises depuis l'Indépendance, cela a suscité de l'espoir. Mais au lieu de consolider les acquis démocratiques et renforcer les dynamiques de réconciliation nationale, cette gouvernance se transforme aujourd'hui en une forme d'aggravation des fractures mémorielles, c'est là aussi une dimension attristante. C'est suite au remaniement gouvernemental en mars 2024 que la série de disparitions forcées a vraiment commencé, notamment avec les militants du FNDC Foniké Menguè et Billo Bah, enlevés à leur domicile sous les yeux de leurs épouses et de leurs voisins. Désormais, on kidnappe les membres de la famille et même les enfants mineurs des citoyens en exil. Quelle atmosphère règne actuellement au sein des populations guinéennes ? Aucune catégorie socioprofessionnelle du pays ne se trouve épargnée. Les vieillards ne sont pas épargnés, les femmes, les enfants ne sont pas épargnés. Parfois des gens qui ne demandent absolument rien à l'État, sinon que d'être sécurisés, ceux-là également peuvent se coucher le soir avec la peur de ne pas se réveiller chez eux le matin ou sortir de la maison avec la peur de ne pas rentrer le soir. Vous voyez combien la situation est alarmante ! Et qu'est-ce que ça rapporte ? Nous sommes avec des dirigeants qui ne mesurent pas du tout les dégâts qu'ils causent. Aussi bien dans le présent, car aucun investisseur sérieux, ne serait-ce que pour sa sécurité, ne viendra investir dans cette situation. Mais mieux encore, qu'est-ce que l'avenir nous réserve ? Ce qui ne pourra jamais changer, c'est justement le changement. D'une manière ou d'une autre, dans un an ou dix ans, le changement interviendra. Et vu que toutes les lignes rouges sont franchies, nos autorités, au lieu d'être guidées par la raison, s'enfoncent davantage dans le déni. Il suffit de voir aujourd'hui la précarité économique et financière dans laquelle le pays vit. Même si vous avez de l'argent dans le compte bancaire, vous ne pouvez pas y avoir accès. C'est la paralysie totale au niveau du système bancaire. De nombreuses sources indiquent à RFI qu'il y a de plus en plus de Guinéens qui fuient le pays : entrepreneurs, universitaires, magistrats, artistes et même des militaires. Et ceux qui restent disent avoir installé leur famille dans les pays voisins. Vous constatez aussi ce genre de phénomène ? Bien sûr ! Mais le vrai paradoxe, c'est que ce sont surtout ceux qui gouvernent qui font sortir leurs familles du pays, car ils ont les moyens à leur disposition. Le réflexe principal aujourd'hui, lorsque quelqu'un est ministre, directeur ou a accès à une dimension de responsabilité publique qui lui permet d'avoir de l'argent, c'est de faire sortir sa famille et de la mettre à l'abri. Vous disiez que les partenaires de la Guinée s'accommodaient de ces violences. Vous mettiez ça sur le compte des ressources minières. Est-ce qu'il n'y a que cela finalement qui justifie ce silence assourdissant de toutes ces personnes ? Je vois aussi que le contexte mondial aujourd'hui met l'économie au centre des relations et les autres aspects à la périphérie. Mais je vais paraphraser simplement le président français Emmanuel Macron qui s'exprimait après l'assassinat de l'ayatollah iranien Khamenei : « L'Histoire ne regrette jamais les dictateurs qui massacrent leur peuple ». Donc je dis à tous nos partenaires : les peuples n'oublieront jamais les partenaires qui se sont accommodés de leurs souffrances au moment où ils avaient le plus besoin d'eux. But when they're real, every cop drops everything.The first story: One of Patrick's first nights riding solo. A "kidnapping" call that turned out to be a domestic dispute, with an unfortunate twist.The second story: A real kidnapping. A mother duct-taped to a chair, beaten unconscious by her ex in a crack cocaine-fueled rage. Her five-year-old son is missing. Every cop on the shift came together. They weren't going home until they got that child back.All stories are real. Names and locations have been changed where necessary.

March 1, 1932. East Amwell Township, New Jersey. 20-month old Charles Lindbergh Jr., the son of renowned aviator Charles Lindbergh, is abducted from his crib in the nursery of his home and a note is left behind demanding a $50,000 ransom for the baby's safe return. Even though the ransom is eventually paid out to an unidentified man at a cemetery in the Bronx, the child is not returned and his body is found in a wooded area located just over four miles from the Lindbergh residence. His cause of death is a fractured skull and it is believed that he was killed on the very same night he was kidnapped. Over two years later, a suspect named Bruno Richard Hauptmann is charged, convicted and executed for the child's murder. However, some people believe that Hauptmann was railroaded and even though nearly a century has passed, there is still a lot of controversy and debate surrounding one of the most famous cases of all time. To commemorate the milestone of our ten-year anniversary as a podcast, “The Trail Went Cold” will be presenting our very first special four-part episode and exploring the crime known as the “Lindbergh Baby Kidnapping”. This week, on Part Three, we explore a number of theories about the case which have been pushed forward over the years, including the possibility that Hauptmann committed the crime alongside some accomplices who got away with it, or that Charles Lindbergh himself staged the kidnapping in order to cover up his own complicity in his son's death. When a family sailing journey ends in capture by child soldiers during Mozambique's civil war, a man must protect his children while confronting the unsettling truth that his captors are both perpetrators of violence and children shaped by it. However, in the decolonization process, both were thrown into proxy battles, between old structures clinging to power and the larger global cold war between communist and capitalist superpowers. South Africa, even after independence, was still ruled by a white minority government, under the National Party. The National Party was populated mostly by the white ethnic group known as Afrikaners who spoke a language called Afrikaans. The National Party instituted apartheid, a brutally oppressive system of institutionalized racial segregation and white supremacy enforced in South Africa from 1948 to the early 1990s. South Africa shares a northeastern border with Mozambique. When Mozambique gained independence in 1975, they were ruled by the Communist party known as FRELIMO. FRELIMO became a major force opposing apartheid in neighboring South Africa. The South African apartheid government, in response to FRELIMO's opposition, actively destabilized Mozambique from the inside by propping up a rebel group known as RENAMO. This led to a violent 15-year civil war in Mozambique, between the ruling, communist-backed FRELIMO party and the South African-backed RENAMO rebel group. In the first part of today's episode, you'll hear our storyteller speak about growing up in South Africa during apartheid as a white man, but he was not an Afrikaner, and grew up in a family that was opposed to apartheid. The second part of the story takes place in Mozambique, where he and his family are held by the RENAMO rebel group and caught in the chaos and fighting between FRELIMO and RENAMO, the two warring factions in the civil war there. Of course there is much more to say about all of this, and Dave will speak to some of these issues as he experienced them. March 1, 1932. East Amwell Township, New Jersey. 20-month old Charles Lindbergh Jr., the son of renowned aviator Charles Lindbergh, is abducted from his crib in the nursery of his home and a note is left behind demanding a $50,000 ransom for the baby's safe return. Even though the ransom is eventually paid out to an unidentified man at a cemetery in the Bronx, the child is not returned and his body is found in a wooded area located just over four miles from the Lindbergh residence. His cause of death is a fractured skull and it is believed that he was killed on the very same night he was kidnapped. Over two years later, a suspect named Bruno Richard Hauptmann is charged, convicted and executed for the child's murder. However, some people believe that Hauptmann was railroaded and even though nearly a century has passed, there is still a lot of controversy and debate surrounding one of the most famous cases of all time.
