One of the most troubling aspects of cult dynamics is the way they generate self‑reinforcing histories that can become chaotic and fragmented, leaving individuals disoriented within the broader narrative. We need knowledgeable guides who can help us navigate these stories while providing a grounding in their historical context. I wrote Chapter Three of my book, The Cult of Trump, about the parallels with Jones, Moon, and Hubbard. Don Lattin, this week's podcast guest, concurred, though he personally likened Trump more closely in his mind to Jim Jones, whose leadership culminated in the historic tragedy at Jonestown. Lattin is a long-established and award-winning religion reporter. His work has been published in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The San Francisco Chronicle. Both of us agreed that Trump exhibits traits of malignant narcissism and appears to be steering the United States toward escalating threats and harms.   The MAGA movement itself is a cult, is led by cults, and has demented authoritarian leadership written all over it. Don Lattin is a journalist who has specialized in writing about religions, cults, psychedelic history, cultural norms, and other fascinating topics since the 1970s. He's written seven books, including Jesus Freaks – a True Story of Murder and Madness on the Evangelical Edge and Changing Our Minds: Psychedelic Sacraments and the New Psychotherapy. He is also the author of The Harvard Psychedelic Club: How Timothy Leary, Ram Dass, Huston Smith, and Andrew Weil Killed the Fifties and Ushered in a New Age for America. Jon's latest book, If Scientology Ruled the World: Nazi Occultists, Sex Magick, Space Aliens, and the Second Coming, begins with a chilling thought experiment: what if Scientology actually took power? To be clear: Jon does not believe that Scientology — which is facing serious challenges in maintaining current members and recruiting new ones — could ever gain enough popularity to control any government, let alone all the world's governments. It was caused by a pipe bursting last November; our renters sent out a team to fix it, but apparently they did not do it properly and when the warm weather came earlier this year, the mold started to grow. This is what the mold report found out. It is now unlivable. Because of this, our entire family has had to live in Airbnbs for the last several weeks. We are essentially homeless. On top of that, our renters informed us that they will continue charging us rent until we can move all of our things out. Because of the mold, we have had to throw away a lot of our things, such as beds, furniture, clothes, and anything else the mold has ruined. House rent, Airbnb rentals, hospital bills, funeral expenses, many new household items, clothes, and everything else we need to keep our family of us and our four remaining children is, as you can imagine, piling on quite a bit. As most men, I do not enjoy asking for help. However, as most fathers and husbands can relate to, there isn't anything I won't do for my family. The history of the criminal enterprise that was Keith Raniere & Nancy Salzman's cult NXIVM is currently being re-written by its devotees. Most recently, the CBC released a podcast where Allison Mack's minimizes the cult's crimes and her part in coercing and abusing women. One of the many great things about "No Kings" is the variety of messaging we saw. Which means a variety of thoughts. For the progress side of America this is both good and bad because messaging can be scattered. As historically, there will always be the "free Tibet" Berkeley hippies there with those fighting for civil rights, affordable healthcare, and upholding the constitution. For the regress side of America, they're messaging is often more homogenized because there is less variety of thought. This unfortunately means its messaging can be parroted and echoed quicker. When we look at the phenomenon of theocratic fascist cults, whether they arise in the deserts of the ancient world or the digital jungles of the modern mind—we are observing the triumph of ideology over experience. These people, who we've said it before and we'll never stop saying it, in their latest incarnation, are in a fascist MAGA cult, nested in a regressive red cult, nested in a faux Abrahamic supremacist religious cult. So these thrice cult fervent disciples speak in unison because the narrow structure they inhabit demands it. Language, that great frontier of the individual spirit, within these tight canyons is commandeered, reduced, and weaponized into a tool of control. The spontaneous bloom of personal insight is replaced by the same dozen tired selfish asshole tropes, "You Marxist", "You Communist", "We're a Republic, not a democracy", "You wanna raise my taxes", etc...
