Season Two of The Gatehouse rambles on with the fourteenth Redwall book, The Long Patrol. Join us for a dive into Brian Jacques' novel that is totally all about World War I: mud, trenches, mechanization, shell shock, and other fun fare for a kids' book about talking animals. Kathryn posits that War itself is this book's Big Bad (better than Damug Wotsifang). Brick contends that Tammo's character admits insight into trauma in a way we haven't seen from Salamandastron hares. Jacques finally runs out of vermin species, and the best thing he can make up for an antagonist is "well, it's a rat, but, like ... bigger." Cregga gets a stan and Russa gets a fan. Kathryn tries to define authorial intent, and Brick gripes about a riddle that is terrible, even by Redwall standards. Lots happening in this episode, so hop into your favorite overstuffed armchair and join your hosts on a march through The Long Patrol.
Welcome to the Badger Mountain! In this episode, Brick tries to headcanon away the potential problems with the badger lords amassing capital, while Kathryn insists that none of his headcanons make sense given context. We fail to agree, so you'll have to ponder that one on your own. Seriously, we do not agree at all. Kathryn undermines her own credibility by not accurately remembering the frame story, and also admits to having once been a teenager. Brick brags about meeting Brian Jacques. Thanks for joining us. We'll be back next week.
It's Thursday and it's time to visit The Gatehouse. Today we're talking about Mariel of Redwall (1992), the first book in Brian Jacques' second Redwall trilogy. Brick baits Kathryn into complaining more about chronology. Kathryn encourages Brick to exclaim "Gabool!" more times than strictly necessary. Kathryn coins the term "Martin ex machina" while Brick demands more respect for his cries of "GABOOOL!" We both celebrate our appreciation of Mariel as a character; sidebar into contemplating the function of vengeance; and end with more of Brick's headcanon (which Kathryn fiercely resists). Thanks for listening. Join us next week for Salamandastron.

From the mind of Brian Jacques - the New York Times best-selling author of the Redwall series - comes another exhilarating adventure in this beloved saga. At the legendary fortress of Salamandastron, aging Lord Asheye has a prophecy: a new, young badger lord must take his place. But Lord Asheye does not know who the young warrior is. Meanwhile, unaware of his destiny, the future lord is captured by infamous fox Vizka Longtooth, who intends to lay siege to Redwall Abbey.
Salamandastron, ancestral home of the Badger Lords, is under threat from an enemy whose power would seem to be absolute and whose evil knows no bounds. Ungatt Trunn can make the stars fall from the sky, the very earth shake underfoot, and with a horde of vermin as numerous as the leaves in autumn, the wildcat appears unstoppable. The mountain's defences are weak. Who can save it now? Salamandastron's only hope is the badger Lord Brocktree who is drawn to the fortress by an undeniable sense of destiny. If he is to rescue the mountain from the dark days of vermin rule, Brocktree must raise an army capable of combating Trunn's formidable Blue Hordes.
So we have a lot of runaways who went for adventure; a badger and a hare in one group and a squirrel and a mole in another. Do they meet up? What happened to Martin's sword? Come listen and find out. With millions of books in print, Brian Jacques' New York Times best-selling Redwall series is among the most popular sagas of all time. Now the riveting fifth book in the series comes to full and vibrant life in this extraordinary production, featuring the vocal talents of a remarkable cast of skilled performers. While the good creatures of Redwall Abbey relax during the hot summer, the mountain stronghold of Salamandastron is under siege. Ferhago the Assassin and his band of vicious weasels throw all their fury against Lord Urthstripe the Strong, Badger Lord of Fire Mountain and ruler of Salamandastron. When a lightning bolt uncovers the sword of Martin the Warrior, young Samkin begins an adventure that leads him toward the battle...and toward the ultimate triumph of good.
We start the last book before we wrap around to the original, and see just how much it forgets the mountain it's supposed to be cover. Just how much can teenagers annoy us? Here our best inimtations of cranky kids and overbearing fathers. Also annoying stoats who will never be Slipp Blaggut.
We have the full crew back as we talk about the longest. single. section. in this book. Just how different will Salamandastron be in it's first publishing appearance compared to what we know? Will Tsarmina slowly start to lose it? Will Ashleg quit Vermin HR and go off to sell his wares on Vermin Etsy? Come listen and find out.
