If you've ever strolled by Jackson Square on a humid morning, you know that smell—the intoxicating, sugary scent of fresh fried dough and powdered sugar mixed wafting on the wind. But what happens when one of those delicious treats decides it's not quite ready to be eaten? Today on Confetti Park Storytime, we are sprinting through the streets of New Orleans alongside a very fast, very sugary character in "The Runaway Beignet," written by the wonderful Connie Collins Morgan. And --we are beyond thrilled to feature a very special narration of this tale. A huge Confetti Park thank you goes out to Connie for sharing her story and her voice to this episode. A Louisiana Twist on a Classic Tale We all know the story of the Gingerbread Man, but Connie has given this timeless fable a delicious Louisiana makeover. Instead of a gingerbread man running through a meadow, we have a feisty beignet darting past local landmarks, clever animals, and hungry onlookers. It is a delightful romp that captures the rhythm and flavor of a street scene in the French Quarter. With its catchy "catch me if you can" singsong, a dash of bayou magic, and the charming illustrations (by Herb Leonhard) that bring the beignet to life, this is a story book you will read over and over again. A Special Thank You to Connie Collins Morgan We are beyond thrilled to feature a very special narration of this tale. A huge Confetti Park thank you goes out to Connie Collins Morgan for sharing her story and her voice to this episode. Hearing an author read their own work adds a layer of magic that you just can't get anywhere else. Connie's warmth and playful delivery make the Beignet's escape feel more vivid than ever. We are so grateful she shared her time and her talent with our community of little dreamers and music lovers. Discover More: Check out Connie's other work and grab a copy of the book at https://conniecollinsmorgan.com/ Confetti Park is a family radio program and podcast out of New Orleans. We feature local authors and songs that celebrate the magic of childhood and the unique culture of Louisiana and the Gulf South. The Tim Conway Jr. Show Hour 1 (3.4) Tonight’s show kicks off with a full-on rant about parking elitists—the people who treat every curb like their personal VIP spot. Then Tim and the crew side-eye the “we just took the whole family skiing” humblebrags from TV anchors… while half the audience is living paycheck-to-paycheck. We’ve also got a straight-up feel-good survival story: Rocky, a dog missing for 43 days in Summit County, Colorado, is found alive—and the rescue team finally gets him back using a trap baited with peanut butter after weeks of setbacks. Plus: a dashcam nightmare as a boat comes loose on the 91 Freeway in Bellflower and darts across lanes like it’s trying to start its own insurance claim. Then it’s travel etiquette warfare: United may boot passengers who refuse to use headphones. And Starbucks is officially in spring mode with a fresh March 3 menu drop featuring new/returning chai, coconut, ube, and lavender flavors. We wrap with a local reset: the Sepulveda Basin cleanup push ramps up as the area preps to host multiple LA 2028 events See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. In this episode, we feature the very special next entry in The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series: it's Chuck's chat with legendary producer, songwriter, musician, and self-described “rock and roll creep” and Lord of Garbage Kim Fowley. He has been described as "one of the most colorful characters in the annals of rock & roll", and that is truly putting it mildly. Although admittedly he is always in rare form (I can confirm, having had a relationship with him toward the end of his life), he is in the rarest of rare forms in this interview, barely allowing Chuck to get a word in edgewise. The dynamic is delightful right from the off. He is the single common denominator that links “Alley Oop”, Cat Stevens, The Soft Machine, Bruce Johnston, Kiss, Helen Reddy, John Lennon, Ariel Pink, The Byrds, Motley Crue, Frank Zappa, The Modern Lovers, Alice Cooper, Warren Zevon, The Runaways, and the idea of raising a lighter at a concert. Although this chat careens maniacally off the rails, the main topic of conversation centers on Kim's plan to pave the way for Pet Sounds to make a huge splash amongst the British press and pop star aristocracy. Kim passed away a few years later in 2015, which makes this posthumously released “Chuck Chat” yet another priceless buried treasure. There'll be a short sneak peak running publicly for free, but the entirety of this podcast will only be accessible on the Major Tier of Discograffiti's Patreon. Don't miss it, or you'll only be getting part of the story. Get it as a one-off, or better yet just subscribe. VOLUNTARY REACTION: VOLS Runaway from Oklahoma behind Ament by Fanrun Radio
Right now I am definitely feeling the pull to simplify things in my life. I even said to my husband the other day, "I feel a bit like I'm on a runaway train!" Luckily, it's not the first time I've felt this way. I now know that this happens sometimes and life will suddenly accelerate faster than I intended. But here's what I've learned: I'm not actually on a runaway train. I can choose to get off. The harder question is how—and that's exactly what this episode is about. As I take a break from new episodes this month in an effort to get off the train, it was important to me to re-air this episode that essentially taught me how to figure out what actually needs my energy—and what doesn't. It's based on Greg McKeown's book Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less. Greg's work has been part of my mental bookshelf for a decade, and these lessons about becoming an essentialist help me recalibrate whenever I need them. In this episode, you'll learn:

Brian Hyland is known as the voice of Summer Love, & is a pioneer of Rock N Roll. He sang one of my favorite songs, in fact it's probably one of almost everyone's favorite songs & one of the great classics of all time as it is on every karaoke song sheet…Sealed With a Kiss, which has probably been sung billions of times in karaoke. His journey through music is nothing short of legendary. At the ripe young age of just 16, he skyrocketed to stardom with his infectious hit, “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini,” claiming the coveted #1 spot across the nation & earning him a prestigious Gold Record. But..this was just the beginning of a remarkable musical odyssey. Alongside the dynamic duo of Gary Geld & Peter Udell, he had hits like “Let Me Belong to You,” “Ginny Come Lately,” the world wide phenom “Sealed with a Kiss,” & “Warmed-over Kisses” solidifying his status as a household name. He collaborated with luminaries such as Snuff Garrett, Leon Russell, & JJ Cale, delivering hits like “The Joker Went Wild” & “Run, Run, Look and See,” which soared into the top 20 on the charts. We discuss: -Where Brian grew up (right near me!) -How & when did this music bug germinate in you. -His meteoric rise which continued with the monumental success of Curtis Mayfield's “Gypsy Woman,” a timeless anthem that resonated globally, selling over 3 million copies & produced by the legendary Del Shannon who was known for his megahit Runaway. -How his penchant for reinvention shone brightly with his rendition of Jackie Wilson's “Lonely Teardrops,” capturing the essence of soulful melodies with unmatched finesse. -How In 1977 he moved to New Orleans to work with Allen Toussaint. Allen produced an album with Brian called “In a State of Bayou.” The album was loved by the critics and was one of the best pieces music he ever did. -After 60 years since the release of ‘Sealed with a Kiss', Brian reunited with Peter Udell. Peter penned a Christmas song & invited Brian to record it. The song, titled ‘A Little Bit of Christmas Time', was released at the end of Nov. 2023. -How Brian continues to grace stages & studios with his timeless melodies, with a legacy as a true icon of the music industry which seems to only grow stronger with each passing beat. -“Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini…now those are some memorable lyrics. What year was that recorded & how did that song & those iconic lyrics come about. -How long did it take for your next hit song and what song was that? -Sealed With a Kiss. How did that song come about and was it about someone specific? -What keeps Brian still performing 65 years after his first big hit? See www.BrianHyland.com for upcoming performance and to listen to some of his classics

We're back! Sorry for the delay, as we all know, a lot going on to start the year. But thankfully we were able to stack a few episodes and we'll be dropping them weekly going forward, starting with the amazing Steven Underwood! His new book, Forever for the Culture: Notes from the New Black Digital Arts Renaissance, explores the ways in which Black culture shaped the digital age as well as Black digital creators fight for recognition. Speaking of fight... This weeks movie was a battle as we watched Runaway, a Hallmark TV movie from 2000 that stars...Dean Cain and Maya Angelou? We got racism, we got platitudes, we got voodoo, and some wild plot twists. Go buy Steven's book, available wherever books are sold, preferably at a Black owned bookstore if you can. This Black History Month we'll be celebrating with some mini episodes discussing some corners of the Black film world that don't often get spotlighted as well as running our first Book Club meeting (details coming real soon). Hit us up on the socials Whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod on IG and (for now) TikTok and we'll be back next week with *shudders* Neo Ned.

I have never loved an epistolary novel (a novel in letters). But at every turn Evans avoided the pitfalls. Not only that, but The Correspondent ends up being a rich, moving read. Tune in to find out how she pulls it off, what made me put it down--only to pick it right back up--and why this work deserves a closer look.
Send us a textNew year, same heart: we kick off 2026 with a clear promise—less hate, more listening—and a warm, candid check-in from the couch. Think realistic resolutions, honest progress, and the art of hibernation done right. We trade performative perfection for small, steady moves and a little humor about Apple Watch stand-offs, spinach-near-cheese iron counts, and the weather that cancels steps. Our winter watchlist leans twisty and absorbing. Runaway peels back the glossy family image to reveal buried truths, while His And Hers turns marriage into a high-stakes guessing game where certainty keeps shifting. Evil Influencer examines charm, control, and community gatekeeping with an unsettling look at trust exploited. For movie night, The Rip drops us into a moral pressure cooker—found money, fractured loyalties, and a decision you'll debate with yourself long after the credits.Reading brings balance and breath. It Starts With Us offers healing and hope after hurt, What Lies Between Us traps us in a mother-daughter maze of memory and blame, and Dean Koontz's Life Expectancy blends suspense with wit, proving genre can stretch without snapping. We talk audiobook momentum, book club plans, and how swapping doom-scrolling for chapters reshapes attention. On the music side, we go deep with Taylor Swift's storytelling and a wave of 2000s nostalgia that anchors mood and memory. We also pause for a grounded note on Minnesota's ICE tensions: empathy without naivete, lawful accountability without cruelty, and a focus on safety that resists chaos. The throughline is simple and stubbornly hopeful—slow progress counts, tenderness is strength, and attention is a superpower. If you're craving smart recs, real talk, and a nudge toward gentler days, this one's your winter companion. If it resonates, follow, share with a friend, and leave a review so more kind, curious people can find us.Support the showhttps://linktr.ee/onourbestbehavior

Send us an email @ info@parentcoachesunleashed.com SummaryIn this episode of Parent Coaches Unleashed, hosts Carrie Wiesenfeld and Jessica Anger welcome back their husbands, Ken and Lonny, to discuss the impact of parental reactions on children. The conversation is sparked by a scene from the Netflix series 'Runaway,' where a father's disappointment affects his child's willingness to communicate. The hosts explore how facial expressions and body language can convey emotions that children pick up on, often leading to misunderstandings or fear of sharing their own feelings. They emphasize the importance of open communication and the need for parents to be aware of their reactions, as these can have lasting effects on their children's emotional development. Throughout the episode, the group reflects on their own parenting experiences, discussing how reactions to various situations—big or small—can shape a child's perception of safety and trust. They share personal anecdotes, including humorous moments and serious reflections, highlighting the balance between expressing emotions and maintaining a supportive environment for children. The episode concludes with advice for parents on how to navigate their reactions and foster a healthy dialogue with their kids, ultimately reinforcing the idea that communication is key in parenting.TakeawaysKids are always paying attention to our reactions. It's important to communicate openly about feelings.Facial expressions can impact children's willingness to share.Parents should reflect on their reactions and how they affect kids.Creating a safe space for dialogue is crucial in parenting.

What if the “dumb party metal” you grew up with turned out to be one of the sharpest mirrors of 1980s America? In this episode of Dig Me Out: 80s Metal, we sit down with author, professor, and 80s tribute-band guitarist Jesse Kavadlo to talk about his new book Rock of Pages: The Literary Tradition of 1980s Heavy Metal and why those songs about girls, demons, and good times were actually wrestling with nuclear fear, censorship, and what it meant to grow up under the Cold War.Jesse walks us through how 80s metal lyrics connect to classic literature, from Def Leppard reimagining Genesis and Paradise Lost to Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne grappling with existential dread, addiction, and the possibility of global annihilation. We dig into the PMRC hearings and satanic panic, the way MTV videos turned escapism into literal chains and magic portals, and how Stranger Things surprisingly nails the mix of danger and freedom that metal kids actually felt in the 80s. Along the way, we talk subculture vs. streaming-era playlists, why Dio and Iron Maiden might be the true heirs of Romantic poetry, and how heavy metal may have nudged the Cold War toward its end at the Moscow Music Peace Festival. If you care about 80s heavy metal, the MTV era, or just love thinking about how songs work under the hood, this episode is for you. Fans of Iron Maiden, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Poison, Bon Jovi, Dio, and even Steel Panther's parody universe will hear this music in a new way. And if you're into how culture and politics collide in sound—think the way punk, hip-hop, or grunge carried the anxieties of their eras—you'll find a lot to chew on here too.Episode Highlights0:00 – Intro / Setting the stage How Jesse went from Brooklyn club stages and opening for Danger Danger to a PhD in literature and an 80s tribute band in St. Louis, and why 80s metal still gets written off as “by and for dummies” while Dylan and Kendrick win major literary prizes.5:12 – Are 80s metal lyrics actually literature? Cassette liner notes, goofy rhymes, and serious themes: Jesse breaks down how synecdoche, personification, metaphor, and symbolism show up in songs by Def Leppard, Metallica, and Twisted Sister.12:45 – PMRC, Tipper Gore, and the fight over teenage imagination We revisit the 1985 PMRC hearings, Dee Snider's testimony, and why “Under the Blade” and “Suicide Solution” say more about adult panic than teen corruption.20:30 – Cold War metal: Bon Jovi to Nuclear Assault How videos like Bon Jovi's “Runaway” and songs by Metallica, Ozzy, Megadeth, and Nuclear Assault carried nuclear anxiety, class conflict, and apocalyptic dread beneath all the hairspray.28:10 – Escapism, fantasy, and why Dio matters From Dungeons & Dragons to Iron Maiden and Dio, we explore metal's love of magic, fantasy, and portals as a deeply human response to a world that often felt unlivable.36:40 – MTV, chains, and the magic door We unpack the visual language of 80s metal videos: breaking out of asylums and prisons, falling through mirrors, and what it meant to “escape to the concert” once metal hit the mainstream.45:05 – Outsiders selling millions of records Why metal fans still felt like misfits even as the music dominated MTV, and how that outsider identity overlaps with the way readers and writers see themselves.52:30 – Van Halen, class struggle, and 1984 From “Running with the Devil” and “Jump” to “Hot for Teacher,” we look at David Lee Roth's working-class storytelling, school-as-prison imagery, and the eerie resonance of naming an album 1984 in the synth-drenched futureshock of the mid-80s.1:01:10 – Cowboys, Road Warriors, and the end of the world How metal videos borrowed from Escape from New York, The Road Warrior, and cowboy mythology to build a visual language of lawless survival and American ruggedness.1:09:45 – W.A.S.P., Nine Inch Nails, and moving the line What it means that W.A.S.P.'s “Animal (F*** Like a Beast)” got pulled from shelves while “Closer” became a critical darling, and how censorship lines shifted from the 80s to the 90s.1:18:20 – White Lion, Living Colour, and the politics hiding in band names We get into White Lion's unexpected political conscience, the uncomfortable optics of Pride, and how Living Colour wore their politics more explicitly.1:25:40 – How to listen differently after Rock of Pages Jesse explains how he hopes readers (and listeners) revisit 80s metal: with streaming open, videos queued up, and an ear tuned to metaphor, context, and the way these songs helped kids survive their era.1:33:50 – What's next and where to find the book Jesse hints at possible 90s projects and shares where to find Rock of Pages through Bloomsbury, indie bookstores, and the usual suspects. If this conversation makes you want to pull your old cassettes out of the box (or at least re-open your 80s metal playlist), don't stop here.Dive into the full archive of 70s & 80s metal episodes, history-of-the-band deep dives, and mixtapes at digmeoutpodcast.com.Join the DMO Union for bonus episodes, new release reviews, polls, and our private Discord community at dmounion.com.Subscribe, leave a review, and share this episode with the friend who still swears 80s metal was “just for fun.” Let's prove, once and for all, that the music that raised us was doing a lot more than just partying. You may have noticed that your mind is out of control. It's filled with racing thoughts, ancient neuroses and grudges, revenge fantasies… So why are we like this and what can be done about it? Today, we're talking to one of our favorite people and also one of the most prominent meditation teachers in the West, Joseph Goldstein, about how "ridiculous" our minds are – that's a word he uses a lot to describe the mind – and some really compelling ways to train the mind. Spoiler: having a sense of humor is crucial here. Just by way of context: this is the first in a series of episodes with Joseph, focusing on the phrases he uses while he's teaching Buddhism and meditation. Dan and Joseph are collaborating on a book that will be a compilation of these phrases and how to use them. This book won't be out for several years, but as Dan conducts a series of interviews with Joseph, we'll release them here on the podcast. There's another part coming out this Sunday, January 4th. Just to give you a little taste, here are the phrases we'll be covering in today's episode: Just begin again Sit and know you're sitting Relaxed, not casual More or less mindful Thieves of meditation Mara, I see you. Ridiculous The mind has no pride Soundtrack The mind is the forerunner of all things. These might not make any sense right now, but you'll hear Joseph explain each of these, where they came from, and how to use them in your meditation practice AND in your daily life. Incredibly practical, bite-sized wisdom.
