Episode 5609: Is Our Economy A Runaway Train

Li-ion thermal runaways in aircraft cabins, Ryanair engine blade-out accident, two planes with the same flight number at the same airport at the same time, Marine One and commercial operations at DCA, Air India crash report update, Boeing 737 Max crack inspections, hiring gamers to become air traffic controllers, and the Heart Aerospace X1 battery-electric demonstrator first flight. Aviation News Li-ion Thermal Runaways on the Rise in Aircraft Cabins UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) issued a 2025 Data Review, Lithium-ion Battery Incidents in Aviation [PDF, 13 pages]. The study reports a 15% increase in Lithium-ion battery thermal runaway incidents on passenger flights in 2025, compared to the year prior. Portable charger incidents increased 42%, ahead of e-cigarettes, with cell phones the third most common device involved in thermal runaways. The data comes from the voluntary ULSE Thermal Runaway Incident Program (TRIP). More than 40 passenger and cargo airlines participate in the program. These incidents cost the industry an average of $1.8 million a year, or $96,000 per incident, “in damage, disruption, and associated losses.” To mitigate the risk of thermal runaway incidents, ULSE recommends cabin crew training, standards for onboard safety equipment to help manage thermal runaways, and more passenger education. Bird strike suspected in Ryanair engine blade-out accident In July, a Malta Air Boeing 737-800, doing business as Ryanair flight 1879, experienced a No 2 fan-blade-out failure as it climbed out of Thessaloniki International Airport in Greece. Engine fragments breached the fuselage and the cabin depressurized. A passenger was partially sucked out through a window that blew out. In its Aviation Investigation Preliminary Report [PDF, 13 pages], the NTSB reports: “Examination of the airplane revealed that the No. 2 engine, an CFM International (a joint company between Safran Aircraft Engines and GE Aerospace) model CFM56-7B26, experienced a fan blade separation that resulted in engine fragments striking the fuselage and the right horizontal stabilizer. The pressurized section of the fuselage was penetrated 1) through the passenger cabin window located at row 11, as well as 2) lower lobe fuselage skin behind the right wing-to-body fairing… Additional impact damage was found on the right wing-to-body fairing, a dent with paint smearing on the fuselage window belt skin, a dent on a stringer common to the dented fuselage window belt skin, a gouge on the right horizontal stabilizer upper skin and a dent on the right horizontal stabilizer leading edge.” View of the No.2 (right) engine inlet. View is looking aft..Courtesy NTSB. “Examination of the engine and nacelle revealed that one fan blade (No.10) had fractured and separated below the blade platform. The outer blade tips were fractured and separated on two additional fan blades (Nos. 16 and 21). All remaining blades were full length but exhibited varying levels of impact deformation. Three loose fan blade fragments were recovered from the engine. A visual examination of the core was performed and there was no evidence of radial uncontainment though the engine cases, or any undercowl fire. The engine inlet cowl, which is forward of the fan case, exhibited evidence of punctures…” Bird remains were recovered and hand-carried to the Smithsonian Institution Feather Identification Lab in Washington. The Greece Hellenic Air and Railway Safety Investigation Authority (HARSIA) delegated the investigation in full to the NTSB. A Phoenix air traffic controller with 25 years on the job quickly recognized the problem and referred to the flights as “American 2482 on the arrival” and “American 2482 on the departure.” See: ‘It Could Have Been Disastrous': Air Traffic Controller Carefully Handles Two American Airlines Planes With the Same Callsign as They Flew Towards One Another Passenger plane taking off got too close to Trump's Marine One helicopter, NTSB and FAA to investigate Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is located about three miles from the White House. When the president departs the Ellipse in Marine One, airport traffic is typically halted. This time, airport traffic continued for a few minutes. The FAA said, “…there was momentary loss of separation after which the aircraft continued to move away from one another.” Ahmedabad tragedy: Supreme Court accepts pilot dad’s plea not to make Air India crash report public The Supreme Court of India granted a request from the 91-year-old father of one of the pilots killed in the June 2025 Air India Ahmedabad crash (Flight AI171, 260 dead) that the final crash investigation report from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) be submitted to the court in a sealed cover rather than made public.  The AAIB had told the court its final report would be ready by October, and the government agreed to submit it in a sealed cover out of respect for the father’s wishes, even though the Solicitor General had initially opposed keeping it confidential, citing international investigation norms under ICAO. FAA orders crack inspections for hundreds of Boeing 737 Max jets The final rule applies to certain Boeing 737-8, -9, and -8200 Max models, estimated to be 471 planes. While no cracks have been found in these Max models, the FAA received reports of cracks in a forward “bear strap” for several older 737 NG planes. Das dritte Studioalbum "Slippery When Wet" war vermutlich das wichtigste Album überhaupt für Bon Jovi. Denn bei ihrem Plattenlabel stand die Band auf der Abschussliste. Bevor die Band 1986 mit "Slippery When Wet" und den Hits des Albums "Livin‘ On A Prayer", "Wanted Dead Or Alive" und "You Give Love A Bad Name" ihr erfolgreichstes Album veröffentlichte, war ihr Plattenlabel nicht gut auf die Band zu sprechen. Nach einem ersten Achtungserfolg mit ihrer Single "Runaway" und dem dazugehörigen Debütalbum hatte man große Hoffnungen in Jon Bon Jovi und die Gruppe gesetzt. Das zweite Album "7800° Fahrenheit" blieb bei der Veröffentlichung jedoch deutlich hinter den Erwartungen zurück. Für die Band hieß es bei Album Nummer drei also: "Make it or break it". Derek Shulman, der später zu einem der wichtigsten A&R-Manager der Rockgeschichte werden sollte, hatte der Band geraten, sich mit dem Songwriter Desmond Child zusammenzutun. Dieser damals noch junge Mann sollte zu einem sehr bedeutenden Songwriter in der Rockgeschichte werden. (Später arbeitete er mit Künstlern wie Aerosmith, Kiss, Jennifer Rush, INXS, Katy Perry und auch mit der deutschen Band Tokio Hotel zusammen.) Jon Bon Jovi, Gitarrist Richie Sambora und Songwriter Desmond Child setzten sich im Keller der Familie Sambora in der Heimatstadt von Bon Jovi, New Jersey, zusammen und schrieben während ihrer Sessions mehr als dreißig Songs für "Slippery When Wet". Dabei entstanden auch Songs wie "Livin‘ On A Prayer" und "You Give Love A Bad Name". Besonders bemerkenswert ist die Arbeit von Gitarrist Richie Sambora, der sich mit dem Album sehr stark weiterentwickelt und seinen Stil gefestigt hat. Mit "Slippery When Wet" konnten Bon Jovi sich von härteren Bands abgrenzen und haben sich mehr in Richtung Stadionrock entwickelt. Außerdem haben sie ihren eigenen, unverwechselbaren Sound geschaffen, für den Millionen Fans auf der Welt sie lieben. If one were to open a Kentucky newspaper in the early nineteenth century, there's a good chance you would come across an advertisement for a runaway enslaved person. Between the 1780s and the end of the Civil War, thousands of these advertisements appeared in Kentucky newspapers, placed there by individuals and organizations seeking to reclaim their property. At first glance, these advertisements reduced enslaved peoples to little more than human property. Under the surface, however, they offer important clues about enslaved peoples and the ways they resisted slavery. Join us for a discussion with a historian who has combed through hundreds of these advertisements. Tim Talbott is the chief administrative officer for the Central Virginia Battlefields Trust in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He formerly served as the director of education, interpretation, visitor services, and collections at Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier in Petersburg, Virginia. Mr. Talbott received his MA in Public History from Appalachian State University, is the author of multiple articles, and contributes to Emerging Civil War. Hosted by Dr. Allen A. Modern editors tentatively attribute it to novelist Elizabeth Anna Hart, though the evidence remains circumstantial. Supposedly this is one of the oldest bars in Nebraska. I’m here with Raquel, the undisclosed girl, the beautiful, beautiful undisclosed girl. We’re in Omaha, Nebraska, this place is supposedly the oldest bar, it used to be one of the jockeys, there used to be a horse track, we’re in Oscarbon District, whatever, Nebraska spelled backwards, 00:01:12 that’s the name of this district we’re in. You can hear some noise going on at the dive bar. There used to be a horse track here, supposedly, and all the jockeys used to hang out here and drink, but it’s not, there’s no horse track here anymore. 00:01:31 It doesn’t get much diver than this place, but this is a good, we picked a good one here. And the owner seems like a nice guy, what’s his name? Jace. 00:01:39 Jace, J-A-C-E. His great grandma opened it in the 1970s. Yeah, he said his great grandma bought this place in the 70s. Named, it’s the Fan Tan Club, which is spelled F-A-N-T-A-N, 00:01:52 supposedly it’s a Chinese card game of some sort. Last night we hung out with Dan Grossman, had a little too much to drink. 00:02:21 We went to a place called the Corner something, the Crown Bar. We had quite a few, the girl, the bartender there looked like she was about 18 years old. She had a nose ring and half her hair was white, half her hair was black, wearing shorts covered in tattoos, a little chubby, boobs hanging out, a little goth, kind of gothy looking. 00:02:44 It was a cool bar and we managed to pick some pretty good dive bars. We’ve been pretty good at it. We carry our own koozies with us. 00:02:54 It always impresses the people at these places when you bring your own koozie. Let me pro tip. We must have had about six or seven beers last night. I think Dan got a little bit, but while I got so drunk, not so drunk, 00:03:11 the room was spinning before I went to bed, but managed to make it through. Dan made it home. But when the going got tough, Mark became discouraged and abandoned the mission, returning home. Though his failure caused sharp conflict between Paul and Barnabas, Barnabas gave Mark another chance, and over time he matured into a faithful servant of Christ.  Fitzhugh Brundage, author of A Fate Worse Than Hell, discusses the capture of three black sailors from the Isaac Smithin 1863, which forced the Confederacy to decide if black men in uniform were POWs or runaway slaves. While white sailors were quickly exchanged, the Confederacy refused to trade black captives, viewing them as participants in a servile insurrection. A smuggled letter from the sailors eventually reached Washington, contributing to the halt of systematic prisoner exchanges by the spring of 1863. This shift compelled both sides to become long-term custodians of captives. (1)1865
