For some enslaved Americans, the path to freedom led not north, but south, argues Dr. Alice Baumgardner, an assistant professor of history at the University of Southern California. In South to Freedom: Runaway Slaves to Mexico and the Road to the Civil War (Basic Books, 2020), Baumgartner reveals an untold story of enslaved African Americans finding redemption from slavery in Mexico, which had abolished slavery in many of its territories decades before the American Civil War. Indeed, it was concern by Texas slaveholders that their human property may have been threatened that led them to revolt against Mexico and eventually join the United States and, in time, the Confederate States of America. For those who escaped, Mexico could be far from an anti-slavery paradise, but Mexican officials were loathe to return runaway former slaves back to the United States, a fact which was one of the many reasons why the United States went to war with Mexico in the 1840s. South to Freedom is a fresh look at America's slavery crisis and Civil War, and one which places enslaved people themselves and their own quest for freedom at the heart of the story. Welcome to Talktober! That's right, and entire month of talking... on a podcast... wait wait wait, this theme kinda makes sense. For spooky season, we are breaking from the tradition of nearly every episode of this show, where talk about a singular film or franchise, instead opting to a topic presented by each host. If you like this format, please let us know. If not, please let us know. This week's topic is hosted by Jake, who asks, "which are better, reboots or remakes?" Now, when we write these episode descriptions, it's kinda tough. Imagine a book report, but instead of a teacher, you are writing it for Skynet from Terminator (i.e., the Google algorithm). Given the topic this week, we literally touched on over 50 films, and now we are left trying to include mention of them in this description, but crafted in a way that is not a generic list. Let's see if this works... The discussion defends the Friday the 13th (2009) reboot, but trashes the Nightmare on Elm St. remake. We kinda defend the Rob Zombie Halloween reboot and distinguish it from a remake. We take a hefty dump on the Let the Right One In remake. The 13 Ghosts reboot kicks ass. The Carrie remake does not. The Blob can kinda be a reboot or a remake; find out which we call it. The Hills Have Eyes has a remake, or is it a reboot? The Thing gets arguably the most successful reboot ever, but Psycho may have the worst remake. The Fly has a wicked reboot. The Omen has a dorky remake. The Child's Play reboot is amazing, shut up. The Grudge remake is butts. The Evil Dead (2013) reboot rules your behind. The Ring remake is caca. Evil Dead II is a reboot, right? My Bloody Valentine has a remake and it's not worth watching. Piranha 3D is a great way to revitalize a franchise. Willard is a rat-infested remake. Dawn of the Dead is a bombastic reboot, whereas both Night of the Living Dead remakes from 1990 & 3D 2006 are alright. I am Legend and Omega Man are different and thusly we have a reboot. No one gives Manhunter credit, but its remake, Red Dragon, is a masterclass. The Crazies is kinda bleh until its reboot. Quarantine is a lesser remake of Rec. Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a super fun, vibrant reboot. Amityville Horror... sigh... is fine, but the sequels need to shut up. House of Wax/ House of Wax/ Tourist Trap are all movies. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot/ remake argument could go round and round like leatherface's chain. Black Christmas has shitty remakes that pretend to be reboots. Suspiria is great in both forms. Pet Sematary has a reboot. And then we talk about a bunch of other flicks, so just like... download this episode and let us word vomit inside of your noggin, bruh. Doug also interviews extreme videographer and director, Samhel. These gents have a show coming up on Friday at Dublin Castle in London, what what. Try and make it, if you're cool. If not, also try and make it so you can learn how to become cool. The teacher and student ran away together. Were they ever found? It was at a high school, that rumours began circulating that a teacher and a student were having a relationship. Many believed it was just gossip, until the two of them disappeared. 10 Ways to Start the Writing Process When You're Staring at a Blank Page

Louis L'Amour is attributed as saying, “Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on.”1 Sounds easy enough, but a lot of times we can't even find the faucet. Or we find the faucet but fail to turn it on. Either way, we want to write, but no words flow. Is that you? Are you ready to begin writing but you don't know where to start—you don't know how to get the words to flow? I've got 10 options for you—ten faucets, if you will. I'll bet one stands out more than the rest. Pick one. Try it. See if it gets those words flowing. 1. Start with a memory Think back to an event that seems small yet feels packed with emotion. You don't have to fully understand it. Just remember it. Something changed due to that event. The change may have been subtle or seismic, but you emerged from it a different person.  The simple prompt “I remember” can get you started. Use it as a journal entry and see where it takes you, or go ahead and start writing something more substantial. When you remember and recreate these scenes from your past, you'll learn from them. I experienced this when I wrote a short scene in this style, called One Lone Duck Egg. 2. Start with a photo Photos can whisk us back to another place and time, whether as recently as last week or as long ago as childhood. Pull a photo from your collection of family photos, physical or digital.  Write in response to the scene. Recreate it. Let the memories unfold.  You could be in the photo, or not.  You could write the story behind the moment, or elaborate on a particular person in the scene.  What do you think was happening? Why were you—or weren't you—there? What does this say to you today? Another approach is to combine words with images to create a photo essay.  Back in 2011, I walked around the farm where I grew up and snapped photos. Each time, a fragment of thought came to mind, a flash of a memory.  When I got home, I pieced it together to come up with Dancing in the Loft. 3. Start with art Art ignites imagination. Whether you invent a story behind the piece of art you choose, or you document your response to it, you'll end up with an interesting project.  One of my creative writing professors in college gave us a similar assignment to write poetry from art. It's possible she was trying to introduce us to ekphrastic poetry,2 which, according to the Lantern Review Blog,3 is “written in conversation with a work(s) of visual art.”  But she took a less formal approach, asking us to find some art, study it carefully, and write a poem. I used a small, framed print of an Andrew Wyeth painting as inspiration. I studied the boy sitting in the grass and imagined a possible scenario leading up to the moment Wyeth captured. As I was finishing the poem and typing it up, I realized I needed to include information about Wyeth's work. I turned the frame around and fortunately I found the date and name of the painting. Wyeth named it “Faraway,”4 and I coincidentally called my poem "Runaway.”5 Spend time with the art and see where it leads. 4. Start with an object I once wrote about an old, worn knob that topped the post at the bottom of our stairs.  I loved the worn knob for being worn. All the stain was rubbed off one side of it from the years before we owned the house. Like the previous owners, we swooshed around that newel post, running our palms around the knob every single time we ran up or down the stairs.  When we decided to replace the railing, I begged our carpenter—who is also a friend of ours—to save the knob. He did. And I wrote about it. Another time I wrote about a precious soapstone vase I played with as a child. The consequences of that day of play lasted a long, long time. My friend and coauthor Charity Singleton Craig uses objects (and places) to launch a “chain of remembrance.” She explains in her newsletter "The Wonder Report"...

Fortunately, the excellent film did not provide many significant problems, but this felt only like luck, since the film did not appear to take Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. into account: seemingly implying that Fury and Coulson barely knew each other in 1995 (the show established Fury recruited and supervised Coulson in 1982), and having Coulson mention the Kree (Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Season 1 involved him not knowing who the Kree were – fortunately, the T.A.H.I.T.I. protocol erased Coulson's memory of everything to do with his resurrection, and with Kree being a key part, they would naturally have also been wiped).   The perfect casting of Mahershala Ali as Blade also unfortunately further drove the false narrative online, with people claiming that it meant the shows were “confirmed” non-canon due to Ali already having an MCU role as Cottonmouth. While this was an Internet overreaction given there are other examples of dual casting, the dual casting quirk not being acknowledged felt concerning.   It admittedly did not help that Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Season 6 set itself a year after Avengers: Infinity War and Marvel's Runaways: Season 3 took its timeline through to post-Avengers: Infinity War 2018 dates, yet unfortunately neither referenced the Snap.   A 2019 quote from Mr. Feige, which fairly described the Disney+ shows as the first time TV would truly connect back and forth with the films, was falsely run by sites as “confirmation” that the other shows were not part of the MCU. This quote has been weaponised and referenced ad nauseum for 2 years.   The Darkhold would appear in WandaVision with no link to Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D./Marvel's Runaways   The fan reaction to the Darkhold and Mobius scenes has also led to upsetting incidents where creators such as Jac Schaeffer and Michael Waldron are asked questions they are seemingly, understandably, not informed to answer, giving confused and accidentally damaging quotes.   Cannon Impact:   There are other great Marvel shows, e.g. Legion, but these have nowhere near the power or lasting impact in my heart simply by virtue of not being part of this world.   The MCU family is such a wonderful thing, but right now, Television-inclusive fans don't feel like we're welcome in that family anymore.   Mooted “Possibilities”   If the Inhuman Royal Family needed to be rebooted within the MCU… it would not be the worst thing imaginable.   The idea of being an extricable part of the MCU does not apply to Marvel's Iron Fist       There is precedent with Star Wars for wiping canon, but there it was motivated by a need to free the storytelling. The Marvel Television MCU shows are not particularly restrictive. Most things can be picked up on fairly easily, perhaps at most needing a couple of throwaway setup lines.   Alternate Universe: The shows aren't novelty What If…? type stories, e.g. “What If… Phil Coulson Were Resurrected?”, made to be a separate little alternate story – but born and bred as parts of building, developing, growing, interweaving the beautiful main MCU world and timeline.   Some Hopes Recently, Mr. Feige made the comment, “Everything is on the board. That's one of the fun things about the comics is that characters would appear and disappear and come and go […] There are some great characters and actors from those shows.” This exciting quote bears similarity to previous remarks of Mr. Feige's, such as, “All of those things inhabit, however far on the outskirts, the same continuity, so certainly that opportunity [to integrate those characters] exists.”   Eternals Earns PG-13 Rating https://www.filmratings.com/Search?filmTitle=eternals&x=0&y=0 https://www.cbr.com/marvel-eternals-rating-description/ FilmRatings.com's breakdown of the rating describes Eternals as including "fantasy violence and action, some language and brief sexuality." It's the latter element that has fans raising their eyebrows, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe's movies having avoided sexual content since Disney acquired Marvel Entertainment in 2009.   Unlike MCU movies past, romance is said to play a key role in the film's narrative. It even features a love triangle between on-again, off-again Eternal couple Ikaris (Richard Madden) and Sersi (Gemma Chan) and Dane Whitman (Kit Harington), the mortal human who's dating Sersi when the movie picks up in the present.   The "brief sexuality" could also allude to a scene with Thena (Angelina Jolie), an Eternal warrior who becomes romantically involved with the Deviant Kro in Marvel's comics books. Perhaps tellingly, the final Eternals trailer shows Kro ensnaring Thena with his tendril-like appendages in an oddly intimate fashion, possibly alluding to the pair being in love.   Even more intriguing, Eternals is confirmed to include an onscreen kiss between the Eternal Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) and his husband (Haaz Sleiman), which begs the question: will the movie be daring enough to feature a sexual moment involving a queer couple? It seems unlikely, given the MPAA's restrictive attitude towards LGBTQ+ content, but that won't stop fans from hoping anyway.   Disney+   November 12th, 2021: First Ever Disney+ Day https://thewaltdisneycompany.com/the-walt-disney-company-celebrates-disney-day-on-november-12-to-thank-subscribers-with-new-content-fan-experiences-and-more/ https://www.cbr.com/disney-plus-mcu-future-special/ https://screenrant.com/jungle-cruise-movie-streaming-release-date-disney-plus/   On Friday, November 12, The Walt Disney Company will host Disney+ Day, a global celebration that will come to life across all dimensions of the Company. Subscribers to Disney+ will be treated to new content releases across the service's iconic brands, Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, and Star in international markets, along with a special presentation on Disney+ for fans with sneak peeks into what's to come.   Disney+ Day will feature content premieres from all of the marquee brands on service, including: The streaming premiere of Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings A special celebrating the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Disney+ with an exciting look towards the future   The special was teased as part of Disney's massive lineup for Disney+ Day. Outside of celebrating current MCU titles on the service, the special will also give fans an "exciting look forwards the future." With Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk having all completed production, and Moon Knight nearing the end of filming, there's plenty for the service to tease. The company promises subscribers will be treated to "breaking news, first looks, new trailers, exclusive clips, and appearances from Disney+ creators and stars."   Along with the MCU special, Disney+ Day will serve as the streaming premieres of Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Disney's Jungle Cruise. For those looking for something not Marvel-related on Disney+, the company has promised new content for all of its other major brands, including Pixar, Star Wars and National Geographic.   Fans Express Disappointment Over Emmy Loses https://www.cbr.com/wandavision-fans-express-disappointment-over-emmy-losses/ https://nypost.com/2021/09/20/wandavision-fans-cry-that-show-was-robbed-at-2021-emmys/ https://news.yahoo.com/wandavision-fans-react-emmys-snub-072608224.html https://www.newsweek.com/wandavision-emmy-snub-irks-fans-sparks-wave-angry-memes-1630679 Despite being nominated for a total of 28 Emmys between WandaVision and The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, neither series came away with any general award wins.   WandaVision did win 3 of the Creative Awards in a separate announcement   HULU Series   Marvel's Hit-Monkey Animated Series Finally Has a Release Date An exclusive look at 47 of fall 2021's new and returning shows             Hit Monkey (Nov. 17, Hulu) https://www.cbr.com/marvel-hit-monkey-animated-series-first-look-release-date/ https://ew.com/tv/fall-2021-tv-preview-photos/ Marvel's Hit-Monkey adaptation on Hulu is no longer in limbo, as the animated series has an official release date -- along with a first look.   As part of its preview of upcoming fall TV shows, Entertainment Weekly casually confirmed that Marvel's Hit-Monkey is not only a go but it's coming on Nov. 17 to Hulu. The long-in-development series has been relatively quiet since it was first announced as part of a suite of adult animated shows for Hulu, but fans can now expect it soon. Along with the release date, Hulu shared the first image from the show, featuring the titular assassin and his incorporeal sidekick. Check it out:   Revenge can be sweet — and sometimes fuzzy. Based on the Marvel comic and created by Josh Gordon and Will Speck, this darkly comedic series follows a Japanese snow macaque whose clan meets a stranded hitman, Bryce (Jason Sudeikis), and nurses him back to health. But when Bryce bites the dust, it's up to the titular simian (guided by Bryce's ghost) to follow in his assassin footsteps and seek vengeance. "He's a character who is violent and temper amental but also deeply wounded and innocent," says Gordon. —Devan Coggan Hit-Monkey Trailer https://twitter.com/Marvel/status/1439952785953361927?s=20   Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D./Agent Carter   Marvel One-Shot “Agent Carter” Becomes Easier To Find On Disney+ https://whatsondisneyplus.com/marvel-one-shot-agent-carter-becomes-easier-to-find-on-disney/ Following the release of the Marvel One-Shot “All Hail The King” on Disney+, Disney+ has made a little reshuffle and moved out the Agent Carter short into its own listing, having previously been found in the “Iron Man 3” extra section.   In the short, we see British operative Peggy Carter joining the nascent S.H.I.E.L.D. organization. As she searches for the “Zodiac” key, Agent Carter also battles her misogynistic, bureaucratic boss, Agent Flynn. It takes place after the main events of Captain America: The First Avenger.   The short was originally released in 2013 and was released originally on the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray/DVD. It stars Hayley Atwell, Bradley Whitford, Dominic Cooper, Shane Black, Neal McDonough, and Tim Trobec.   Currently, the short has only been moved into its own listing in some countries, including the US, Canada and Australia.   Moving the short out from the extras section makes sense for multiple reasons, mainly to make it easier for people to find it. While adding extra content like deleted scenes or behind-the-scenes footage makes more sense to include in that section. Bonus features that don't have any real connection bar a home media physical release, are much more useful listed separately.   Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Chloe Bennet shuts down rumors about her reprising her role as Quake for Marvel's Secret Invasion series on Disney+. https://www.instagram.com/chloebennet/ https://www.cbr.com/secret-invasion-chloe-bennet-debunks-quake-rumors/ Bennet commented on the persistent rumors during a recent Instagram story, noting, "I have avoided saying anything like this in general, on social media or whatever, because I thought maybe it would blow over, but it has not. I am in no way attached or involved, even at all or a little bit, in the Secret Invasion Marvel thing. I honestly don't even know really what that is... I am only coming on here to say this because it has gotten to the point that every day I'm getting hundreds of messages about this... I'm now getting like approached in person. Today it was in the tampon aisle at Target... So I figured I would just clear the air."   FEEDBACK [1:42:09]   TWITTER   https://twitter.com/LegendsofSHIELD/status/1441009180190642177 Legends S.H.I.E.L.D. @LegendsofSHIELD Describe this week's @whatifofficial episode "What If...Thor Were An Only Child?" in one word. To kick off book four, we're checking in on a Brenna fave with a doozy of a hook: Runaways, which features a group of kids who discover their parents are supervillains and set out to stop them. Joe isn't quite as enamoured, in part because the art doesn't sit right with him (leading to a discussion of comic sizing and who the intended audience for this imprint was). Still, there's something laudable about a book that presents a tragic backstory for its characters and then lets them move past it.Less successful is Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage's TV series, which takes ages to get going and mistakenly spends too much time on the parents. While it has a sunny teen vibe and great music, and Rhenzy Feliz and Lyrica Okano are well cast, the show is simply too labourious to get into!Wanna connect with the show?
