Michael, Andy and Michael get things started with a new robot that can fly and swim, and transition between the air and water on it's own.  This amazing feat was inspired by diving birds such as the puffin.  This story inspired the cohosts to consider the wingspan of the puffin, and while writing up the show notes, the Wingspan boarding game and the airborne velocity of the swallow. Switching to non-robotic tech, the team take a look at the PocketMage PDA, which then opens up a whole discussion on (dare we say vintage) other PDAs, and the maker culture of EMF Camp, where Andy is spending some time as discussed in e560.  Crowdsupply's Open Printer article primed the team for a number of favorite maker marketplaces which you can check out in the show notes below.  Examples like Tindie, Lectronz and SmallRun all get the benefit of the Games at Work bump.  And a google search turns up another SmallRun website that provides the service of creating custom vinyl for recordings, and inspires Andy on a potential gift. The team then looks at a couple of YouTube videos where a number of different LLMs are tasked to work collaboratively to play Pico Park.  You can see these below, and it is an intriguing way to consider how multiple autonomous agents may work together (or not) in other contexts.  In e173 in 2017, the cohosts discussed an example of two Google Homes talked to one another on Twitch. A lot of past guests have mentioned Elizabeth Hargrave's Wingspan as an answer to a question. Whether as the current game, 60 minute game, or just in passing, there is no denying Wingspan's impact on the industry since its debut in 2019. It was nominated for, and won, lots of awards that year and in 2020. It has had four expansions so far with a fifth in the distant queue according to the Stonemeir emails.Its deeper impact came in 2024 with the release of Wyrmspan, a reimaging, or reimplementation, of Wingspan, by Connie Vogelman with additional development by Hargrave. In this version, dragons replace the birds. Wyrmspan has an expansion as well.Then, last year, a third game entered the Span world, Finspan, and that game is the focus of this episode. Finspan was designed by David Gordon and Michael O'Connell. In this rendition, the birds and dragons have been replaced with fish. Each of the games in the Span world have varied the mechanics of the original.In Finspan, you are, according to the BGG page, a marine researcher seeking to observe aquatic life. You place fish in one of three zones, in one of three tracks, to dive down and observe. The last time I played 1860: Railways on the Isle of Wight, I found myself in the lead from fairly early on. As the game progressed, that lead only kept growing. Each round, the gap widened until it was clear that nobody had a realistic way to catch up with me. The game carried on, turns were taken, but the excitement and tension had gone. The game had become a fight for second place. I call this soft elimination, and it is especially common in longer games, when you are technically still playing, but no longer really competing. What do birding and board games have in common? More than you'd expect! Birder and game designer Elizabeth Hargrave has made it a mission to bring these two things together and her bird-themed game Wingspan does just that. Wingspan has been covered by the New York Times, Smithsonian, and Science magazine among other places and has managed to elicit interest at a time when enthusiasm among the general public for both birding and board games are at an all-time high. She joined host Nate Swick in 2019 me to talk about both.
