It just doesn't get better than this. I knew, and have known since I was 10, that Peter Noone is easy on the eyes and the ears. Meeting him recently after his show at The Canyon Club in LA, I also knew he was funny, crazy talented, nice to a fault, and charismatic as hell. What I didn't know was that Mr. Herman's Hermits, a name chosen for hysterical reasons (he ‘spains), would regale us with story after story, many previously untold (I listened to a load of his interviews today), before tonight, one more precious than the next, each told with wild enthusiasm and almost reckless, but not quite, abandon. We laughed like hell for the entire hour and forty minutes. Reading the comments on Facebook, which we couldn't see during the broadcast, so did the Live audience. There were a few technical glitches before, during, and it turns out, after, but so what! This show is a gem, a diamond in its glory, nothing rough about it… Well, the tech stuff, but who cares? It's like having the best slice of pizza and quibbling over a little dripped cheese. Peter, with his 60 million records sold, 7 gold albums, and 14 gold records, has met and has known everybody who's anybody, and I do mean everybody, and he shares juicy tales from the front, back, and side about so many of them. Friends with the Beatles, Peter's remembrances of John and Paul are priceless. Likewise, Elvis, Bowie, Mick Jagger, Eric Burdon, Leslie Gore, Graham Nash & The Hollies, The Cavern, meeting his wife at a Hendrix Concert and marrying her on his 21st birthday because… well, I let him tell you, his family foibles, the drinking, more drinking, getting sober, advice on drugging from Keith Richards, hysterical, and the creme de la creme with Richard McArthur Park Harris, worth the price of admission. There was some singing here and there, including a bissel, There's a Kind of Hush. Speaking of bissel, Peter's got more Yiddish than I do. The story of his nuptials with his French, Jewish bride in a Roman Catholic church is pure Peter. From the man who gave us, I'm Into Something Good, Mrs. Brown, You've Got A Lovely Daughter, I'm Henry VIII, I Am, Can't You Hear My Heartbeat, Listen People, No Milk Today, we got a treasure trove of bliss. It just doesn't get better than this! Peter Noone Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson **Wed, June 3rd, 7 pm PT, 10 pm ET**

There are many ways that God calls people to lives of holiness. Just as he calls lay people to holiness, he also calls individuals to consecrated life, including hermits, consecrated virgins, widows, and religious. In a very intentional, specific, and lifelong way, those in consecrated life commit themselves to the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Father Mike helps us see how all the different kinds of consecrated life are a great gift to the Church and the world. Despite the many ways the Lord calls his children to holiness, the goal of each human life remains the same – intimacy with Christ. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 914-924. This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/ciy Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.

Full Text of Readings Thursday of Holy Week Lectionary: 260, 39 The Saint of the day is Saint Francis of Paola Saint Francis of Paola's Story Saint Francis of Paola was a man who deeply loved contemplative solitude and wished only to be the “least in the household of God.” Yet, when the Church called him to active service in the world, he became a miracle-worker and influenced the course of nations. After accompanying his parents on a pilgrimage to Rome and Assisi, he began to live as a contemplative hermit in a remote cave near Paola, on Italy's southern seacoast. Before he was 20, he received the first followers who had come to imitate his way of life. Seventeen years later, when his disciples had grown in number, Francis established a Rule for his austere community and sought Church approval. This was the founding of the Hermits of St. Francis of Assisi, who were approved by the Holy See in 1474. In 1492, Saint Francis of Paola changed the name of his community to “Minims” because he wanted them to be known as the least (minimi) in the household of God. Humility was to be the hallmark of the brothers as it had been in Francis's personal life. Besides the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, Francis enjoined upon his followers the fourth obligation of a perpetual Lenten fast. He felt that heroic mortification was necessary as a means for spiritual growth. It was Francis's desire to be a contemplative hermit, yet he believed that God was calling him to the apostolic life. He began to use the gifts he had received, such as the gifts of miracles and prophecy, to minister to the people of God. A defender of the poor and oppressed, Francis incurred the wrath of King Ferdinand of Naples for the admonitions he directed toward the king and his sons. Following the request of Pope Sixtus IV, Francis traveled to Paris to help Louis XI of France prepare for his death. While ministering to the king, Francis was able to influence the course of national politics. He helped to restore peace between France and Brittany by advising a marriage between the ruling families, and between France and Spain by persuading Louis XI to return some disputed land. Saint Francis of Paola died while at the French court. Reflection The life of Francis of Paola speaks plainly to an overactive world. He was a contemplative man called to active ministry and must have felt keenly the tension between prayer and service. Yet, in Francis's life it was a productive tension, for he clearly utilized the fruits of contemplation in his ministry, which came to involve the workings of nations. He responded so readily and so well to the call of the Church from a solid foundation in prayer and mortification. When he went out to the world, it was not he who worked but Christ working through him—“the least in the household of God.”Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

In this sermon, we continue our series through the book of Revelation, “The Wonderful World of the Apocalypse,” by slowing down in Revelation 10 to see what it means for the church to live as a prophetic people in a chaotic world.Drawing from Revelation 10:1–11, we explore:The meaning of “apokalupsis” (Revelation 1:1) as an unveiling of spiritual realityThe mighty angel with pillars of fire and echoes of God's presence in Exodus 13:21–22 and Exodus 14:19–24The opened scroll first seen in Revelation 5:1–7, now handed to John as a picture of the church's participation in God's redemptive planHow the judgments of Revelation 8–9 and the lack of repentance in Revelation 9:20–21 contrast with the repentance of the nations in Revelation 11:13The call to be “a kingdom and priests” (Revelation 1:5–6; 5:9–10) and a prophetic community, not spiritual hermits (Revelation 10:11)We consider how the wilderness is not proof of God's absence but the very place of His presence and formation (Deuteronomy 8:2–5; Hosea 2:14–15), and how the pillar of fire imagery reminds us that God is with His people in every age.Key themes include:Judgment plus the church's witness leading to repentance (Romans 2:4; Revelation 11:3–6, 11–13)The Spirit-empowered prophetic vocation of all believers (Numbers 11:29; Joel 2:28–29; Acts 2:16–21)The call to embody the gospel as a “well-lit sign” pointing to King Jesus and His kingdom (Matthew 5:14–16; 2 Corinthians 5:17–20)The sweetness and bitterness of God's word as John eats the scroll (Revelation 10:9–10; cf. Ezekiel 2:8–3:3; Jeremiah 15:16)The mystery of God brought to completion in Christ (Revelation 10:7; Ephesians 1:9–10; Colossians 1:26–27)We also look at how Paul and John refuse to let exile or imprisonment shrink their calling (Ephesians 4:1; Philippians 1:12–14; Revelation 1:9), and how faithfulness in ordinary obedience often precedes God's “suddenly” moments of breakthrough (Galatians 6:9; 1 Corinthians 3:6–9).This message is a pastoral summons to come out of hiding—whether behind pain, failure, success, or comfort—and to “go again” in prophetic obedience to Jesus (Isaiah 6:8; Romans 12:1–2), trusting that God is with us in the wilderness and intends to use His church to bear witness to many peoples, nations, languages, and kings (Revelation 10:11; Revelation 7:9–10).

Ben has enjoyed a great career as a performer, songwriter, composer for film and TV, and record producer. He's produced records by Ween, Arthur Alexander, and Charlie Feathers, and also collaborated with Alan Vega, Alex Chilton and Los Straitjackets. His songs have also been recorded by artists including Marshall Crenshaw, The Morells, and Deer Tick. Needless to say, Ben Vaughn has encountered some colorful characters in his musical journey. His friend Laura Pochodylo, who works for Sun Records in Nashville, wrote the names of those colorful characters down and placed them in a hat. Names like Jonathan Richman, Arthur Alexander, Willie Nelson, Nancy Sinatra and more. So, what do they do with those names? Laura selects a few at random and Ben relives the stories—no pre-planning, no filter —just telling it like it was, straight from the hat. This episode covers the start of chapter 30 to: “...but what gravitation and electricity are, no mortal knoweth.” Summary: As we start this heavy chapter and think about our expectations, the chapter explores miracles and religious perspectives, with particular focus on Leo Tolstoy's teachings and their connection to nonviolence. We review Tolstoy's views on Christianity and his similarities with Mahatma Gandhi, discussing his writings and experiences that challenged traditional religious practices. This week, it's the great Goffin/King chestnut "I'm into Something Good" - but did you know the original version was recorded by Earl-Jean of girl group greats, The Cookies? Something tells us you'll like it every bit as much as the more famous version by Herman's Hermits, which of course we also cover. Ever wanted to hear the song in Mandarin? Then lend your ears to Singaporean Rita Chao's version from 1967! It's 棒 ! Ever wanted to hear a dirtbag version of the tune? Then listen to The Majic Stray's version from the dreaded year of 1969. We think they may be singing about drugs ... we also add versions by ampersand bands Junior James & The Late Guitar and The Bird & The Bee. Get into it!

There is an interesting theme coursing through these are three dynamic pop hits of the Brill Building era, all by one hit wonders, sung by extraordinary, up and coming stylists, and crafted by some of the most influential music men of the time: Cathy Carroll's 1962 hit, “Poor Little Puppet” (produced and arranged by Stan Applebaum, written by Howard Greenfield (Neil Sedaka's partner, here collaborating with Jack Keller); 1963's “Girls Grow Up Faster Than Boys Do,” by Earl-Jean McCrae (with the Cookies), produced by Gerry Goffin, written by Goffin and Carole King, also with Jack Keller; and Tracey Dey, singing “I Won't Tell,” from 1964, produced by Bob Crewe, written by Crewe with The Four Season's Bob Gaudio. The theme is irony. All three feature tough minded, independent young females, endeavoring for autonomy in a man's world, delivering songs written by powerful men who controlled every aspect of their creation and production. These appeared in the time pre-Women's Liberation, and demonstrate strength, heartbreak, and a tension that pulls against the undertoe of subservience.Taken in chronological order:“Poor Little Puppet” was originally recorded by Jan and Dean in 1961 as a sleepy, Everly Brothers clone, and it didn't do much. But, here, as interpreted by Cathy Carroll, and helmed by Stan Applebaum, the tune takes flight in a punchier, more uptempo arrangement. It charted at 91 on the top 100 - Cathy's only showing, and the surprise twist at the end is powerful, when the singer, looking in the mirror, admits that she herself is the puppet, whose strings are being controlled by the man whose love she craves.2. In 1963, The Cookies were on top with “Chains,” the Goffin-King hit, later covered by The Beatles, and “Girls Grow Up Faster Than Boys Do,” (also by those chart-topping songwriters), was perfectly designed for them and their irresistible lead singer Earl-Jean McCrae. When they sing: “I'm everything a girl should be.. 36-21-35,” it feels quite cringe-worthy nowadays. Irresistible is right, because Gerry Goffin proceeded to make a baby with the vocalist, even though his marriage with King remained undissolved until 6 years later. They even continued to write for Earl-Jean, creating (I'm Into Something Good - which she recorded before Herman's Hermits)3. In “I Won't Tell,” from 1964, the singer vows to keep her illicit romance a secret, so as not to hurt her sister. Tracey Dey, born Nora Ferrari in Yonkers, had made a name for herself as the “Teenage Cleopatra” capitalizing on the notoriety of  the Liz Taylor blockbuster. She caught the eye of The Four Season's maestro, Bob Gaudio when she recorded “Jerry, I'm your Sherry” , playing off the title of the group's hit ‘Sherry”. Together with the production genius Bob Crewe, they crafted this pop classic the teenage Cleo.  Tracey soon got out of the business, earned a Master's degree from Columbia, and became a teacher and screenwriter. Clearly, this was a savvy entrepreneur from an early age. (Btw: the original masters of this recording were lost - so, this version was taken directly off a 45 disc). Enjoy!

Hello Friends! We're back in Hermits land this month with a look at the only LP issued by the group in true stereo from start to finish, Hold On! (Music from the Original Sound Track). Recorded as such for the titular motion picture, this meant that for the first time we got to hear Herman's Hermits in both mono and true stereo, and it is truly glorious. This is a stereo mix with a lot of care in it's execution, and while the mono likely takes the cake, the stereo is a very enjoyable listen, with a few nice little differences throughout, including muted studio noise, differing fade-outs, and variable vocal echo. A Must to Avoid, this is not!  Happy Listening, Frederick Patreon  Email  Instagram - @hypnoticfred

Friends of the Rosary,While we continue praying for the two children killed, the injured, and their families, at a shooting during a Mass held at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, by a demonic gunman, today, August 28, the Catholic Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Augustine (354-430).Born at Tagaste, North Africa, the son of St. Monica had a life of excesses until St. Ambrose converted him.The prayer and tears of his mother, the sanctity of Milan's Bishop Ambrose, the book of St. Anthony the hermit, and the sacred Scriptures brought him to conversion (metanoia), sealed by baptism on Easter night 387, with his mother as witness.Returning to Tagaste, he distributed his goods to the poor and was ordained a priest. He was appointed bishop of Hippo at the age of 41 and became one of the most influential theologians, particularly in clarifying the doctrines of the Trinity, grace, and the Church.Augustine, numbered among the four great Doctors of the Western Church, was a prolific writer and a saint with an inexhaustible spirituality. He wrote the Confessions and The City of God, a worthy memorial to his genius, a philosophy of history.Augustine's episcopal life was filled with battles against heretics. From his encounter with Pelagius, who denied the necessity of grace, he earned the surname "Doctor of grace."As an emblem, Christian art accords him a burning heart to symbolize the ardent love of God which permeates all his writings.Founder of canonical life in common, Augustinian monks and the Hermits honor him as their spiritual father. He famously said, "Restless is the heart until it rests in God."“The life and witness of St. Augustine reminds us that each of us has received gifts and talents from God and that our vocation, our fulfillment, and our joy come from giving them back in loving service to God and others,” Pope Leo XIV, an Augustinian, said today. Not surprisingly, his papal motto, “In Illo uno, unum” (“In the one Christ, we are one”), comes from a homily by St. Augustine.Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New York• August 28, 2025, Today's Rosary on YouTube | Daily broadcast at 7:30 pm ET

Magdalena Maria Turek is an independent research scholar. She received her PhD from Humboldt University, Germany, and was a Research Fellow with the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Program in Buddhist Studies at the American Council of Learned Societies, USA. Her research examines how contemporary reiterations of Tibetan Buddhist orthopraxy, local narratives, and religious historiography shape Buddhist identities among Tibetans in China and the diaspora. She just published Buddhist Hermits in Eastern Tibet: Saint Making and Ascetic Performance (Routledge, 2025), a fascinating ethnography of the meditation school of Lapchi in Kham, which is in Eastern Tibet in modern day Yushu Prefecture in Qinghai Province. This is a relatively modern hermitage founded by a charismatic ascetic master named Tsultrim Tarchen, and populated by various nuns and monks who are studying meditation under Tsultrim Tarchen. Her book explores the rise of Tsultrim Tarchen, the activities practiced by the students there, and the how their contemplative practices and ascetic regimes allow for self-formation and empowerment on the part of the meditators, participate in ethno-religious revival, and articulate a counter-cultural position against Chinese domination of Tibetan culture. I found this book rich with ethnographic detail about the various nuns and why they were there. It was able to help me understand modern Buddhist practices on their own terms, but also how they relate to broader social and historical forces. It's very readable, but also deeply researched both in the field and in terms of the theoretical literature.  Note: Early on in the podcast, we mention a film made by some traveling companions of Dr. Turek's around the same area she did fieldwork. The film was not made by Dr. Turek and does not reflect her views, but gives a sense of the area where she did her fieldwork. The link to the trailer can be found here.
