Bennet Foddy's QWOP dick saves town from comic book character mayhem

From the first moment I heard this ditty, it became my theme song. I learned to play it - (in a far cruder fashion than Ry, of course) and worked it into my set list. Just like the character Bill in the narrative, - (my name, btw) - my reprobate ways had also been domesticated by love. And, another harmonic convergence: I had even spent a year in Louisville, Kentucky. Jack Yellen, the Jewish-Polish immigrant who wrote these Jazz-age lyrics, also penned Happy Days are Here Again, and Ain't She Sweet. If he had only created these three songs, his oeuvre would have been impressive. His art was another example, like that of Irving Berlin and the Gershwins, of the affinity young Jewish musicians expressed for black culture.  And, like the Semitic moguls of old Hollywood - they became reflectors of America's aspirational self-image.Ry Cooder's Jazz album was not exactly an anomaly - he has always been a musical archeologist, but on this collection he strove for unparalleled authenticity. Check out his jaw dropping rendition of Bix Beiderbecke's In A Mist. Sublime. He's a national treasure, and if the jaunty swing-time on this number doesn't get your feet tapping - check your pulse - you might be dead.

We also revisit Dead Mail before it debuts on Shudder in April.The 1970s were the peak of nunsploitation. It would not last long, but a number of memorable nun horror films were released. While it has not returned to that level, there has been an increase in genre films centered around nuns. Perhaps even more surprising is that they have often been pretty good.The Baby in the Basket has a lot going for it. It looks like a Gothic horror movie straight out of the 70s. It also leans into its wacky premise. From the demonic baby to some graphic sexual content, this movie does not play around. It is unfortunate that as much effort was not put into the writing.Rob Zombie is a polarizing figure in the horror community. While some love the shock value of his movies, others wonder if he really likes horror movies or is just trying to turn everyone against them. So when we heard that his brother Spider One had written and directed a horror movie we were interested. Especially after we saw the trailer which hinted that Little Bites was about a monster that is slowly eating a person alive.Yes, it is early in the year and yes, Nosferatu was an incredibly creepy villain, but did we come across the best Big Bad of 2025? Agyar is definitely a frightening creature. Every scene he is in will make your skin crawl. You cannot wait for him to get off the screen. And this is meant as a compliment.There are some noticeable missteps along the way. For the most part, they can be chalked up to Spider One's feature film inexperience. That being said, they do stick out in and leave a negative aftertaste. But how much do they affect Little Bites? And what does Cher have to do with everything? While Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass might be dated now, it was certainly controversial 15 years ago. It's jammed with violence and bad language...and many of those naughty words come out of the mouth of an 11-year-old girl. But it's also a story about a young nobody who becomes a star on social media and goes on to save his city from very bad guy. Take away that he DOES become a superhero and this movie IS our current culture. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays the title character and he's about as average as he always is, but Chloe Grace Moretz is fantastic as the merciless Hit-Girl. And while Kick-Ass' Big Bad, Mark Strong, is just okay and Christopher Mintz-Plasse is nothing special as Kick-Ass' friend/foil, Nicolas Cage has a phenomenal time playing Moretz's vengeful dad. And even though Vaughn's adaption of the comic book is colourful and often fun as it explores the theme of "what if a regular kid tried to be a superhero", it doesn't really deliver on that promise.
