This week's selection - a birthday request from a good friend of the Deadpod - takes us back to the last show of the June 1974 east/midwest tour which took place in Springfield Massachusetts on June 30, 1974. The first set, which we will hear this week, features some outstanding leads by both Jerry and Phil and a great song selection. Be patient during the opening number 'Don't Ease Me In' which is plagued by mix problems (as were most opening numbers in the Wall of Sound era), they clear up for a beautiful rendition of 'Black Throated Wind'. 'Peggy O' follows, a relatively new song, this is only its fifth performance. 'Greatest Story Ever Told' is a sizzler, as is 'Cumberland Blues'. The highlight of this set, if not the show, is the 'Playin' In The Band' > 'Uncle John's Band' > Playin' sandwich. This week's Deadpod will take us to May of 1978. This show took place in the Field House at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY on May the 7th, 1978, a place that was described as basically an aircraft hanger with terrible acoustics and hot as hell. Luckily the tape we have is pretty good overall because this was a show where you can tell that the band was in great spirits and having fun throughout. As we close out the month of January, I decided to feature the first show the band performed back in 1989. This one comes from the Henry J Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland California on February 5, 1989.  While there was alot of anxiety among the faithful that this might be the last time the band would be allowed to play in the relatively intimate confines of the Kaiser, the band came out this night determined to put on a show. They feature a number of relative 'new' tunes, including the first time the Brent song 'We Can Run' was played. The 'Touch of Grey' opener was a great start, then a energetic 'Stranger' into a smart 'Franklin's Tower'. I even think the 'Rooster' here is quite good with Jerry adding some really nice sounds.    We'll hear the second set next week, including another 'first time' played..      Grateful Dead Henry J. This week's Deadpod features the anniversary of a show that took place 32 years ago at Town Park in beautiful Telluride Colorado. It was the weekend of the celebrated 'Harmonic Convergence' which marked a globally synchronized mediation event as well as an exceptional alignment of planets. Needless to say it did not bring about an era of world peace or contentment. Nonetheless, the boys played an interesting show which was a request from a friend of the Deadpod who is marrying his finance there this summer! This week's Deadpod is the result of a request from a longtime listener/supporter of the show. It comes to us from early in 1972, March 5th, 1972, only the second show of that legendary year, and the last time that Pigpen played with the band in San Francisco. This show was a benefit for the American Indains, and the Dead were the third band on the agenda. It turns out that they were pressed for time a bit by the 2 AM curfew, and so the second set was a bit abbreviated and rushed. I've only presented here the songs that survive in soundboard format, and while there are several patches and glitches here the exuberance and magic of the performance won me over and I think it will you as well. The jamming, especially Garcia of course, comes at you in staccato bursts, in songs like Mexicali Blues and El Paso. The highlight of the show of course, is Pigpen's 'Good Lovin'. It is here, around the 6:40 mark, that some report the first occurance of the legendary 'mind left body' jam. I find the entire performance to be uptempo.. it makes me smile.. It took me a bit to decide what to bring you this week, but after I ran across this show I knew it was the right choice.. This is one of those classic live Dead sets from 1969, this one comes from Boulder CO, April 13th. It features everything you\'d expect - great Pigpen raps, wild, far-out jamming and some magnificent moments from Garcia - most notably on the Dark Star and the Eleven. Personally, I\'m always blown away by a really well-played and heartfelt Death Don\'t Have No Mercy - it ends the set I\'m bringing you this week. I hope you enjoy it...
