Today's shiur is sponsored by Rabbi Ilana Axel in honor of Rabbi Roger Ross, Rabbi Jill Hausman, Rabbi Mary Jane Newman and in memory of Rabbi William Kurry, z"l. With gratitude. One should match the clothes to the event - this is derived from the Torah. From where? It is important for Torah scholars to dress in a respectful manner. Why? What is the size of a stain on clothing or on a saddle that would create a separation for laws of mikveh is one needed to purify it in a mikveh? Does it depend on whose clothing it is since different types of people would care about different sizes of stains. Can one burn fats on the altar from sacrifices on Shabbat that night if it happens to be Yom Kippur? Rabbi Yishmael and Rabbi Akiva have different approaches? Would they both agree that one does not blow the shofar on Yom Kippur that falls on Erev Shabbat to herald in Shabbat (as they normally did on Fridays in those days)? What about havdala in davening from Shabbat to Yom Kippur when Yom Kippur falls on Sunday? One is allowed to prepare vegetables for after Yom Kippur on Yom Kippur afternoon from the time of mincha. Why is that allowed? How can one prepare from Yom Kippur for after the holiday? Is that allowed even when Yom Kippur falls on Shabbat?

This week's selection - a birthday request from a good friend of the Deadpod - takes us back to the last show of the June 1974 east/midwest tour which took place in Springfield Massachusetts on June 30, 1974. The first set, which we will hear this week, features some outstanding leads by both Jerry and Phil and a great song selection. Be patient during the opening number 'Don't Ease Me In' which is plagued by mix problems (as were most opening numbers in the Wall of Sound era), they clear up for a beautiful rendition of 'Black Throated Wind'. 'Peggy O' follows, a relatively new song, this is only its fifth performance. 'Greatest Story Ever Told' is a sizzler, as is 'Cumberland Blues'. The highlight of this set, if not the show, is the 'Playin' In The Band' > 'Uncle John's Band' > Playin' sandwich. As usual during this time they take things to unexplored spaces and it makes for a most wonderful time. Grateful Dead Springfield Civic Center Arena Springfield, MA 6/30/74 - Sunday One Don't Ease Me In [3:32] ; Black Throated Wind [6:44] ; Peggy-O [5:19] ; Jack Straw [4:41] ; Loser [6:16] ; Greatest Story Ever Told [5:40] ; Cumberland Blues [6:04] ; Dire Wolf [4:18] ; Playing In The Band [19:07] > Uncle John's Band [8:54] > Playing In The Band [6:07] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod061920.mp3 Thanks so much for listening and for your kind support! This week's Deadpod will take us to May of 1978. This show took place in the Field House at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY on May the 7th, 1978, a place that was described as basically an aircraft hanger with terrible acoustics and hot as hell. Luckily the tape we have is pretty good overall because this was a show where you can tell that the band was in great spirits and having fun throughout. I think you'll find that Jerry and Donna, in particular are in great voice, and Keith and Phil are both having an exceptional evening. There are plenty of highlights to be had here - as well as alot of noodling and playing around between songs.. some of my favorites are the 'Dire Wolf', the great 'It's All Over Now' featuring some very nice Garcia licks, and Passenger, with Donna in great voice. The closing 'Music Never Stopped' reaches some very nice spots as well.. Grateful Dead Field House - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Troy, NY 5/7/78 - Sunday One Jack Straw [6:23] ; Dire Wolf [4:03] ; Mexicali Blues [3:42] > Mama Tried [2:36] ; Tennessee Jed [8:31] ; It's All Over Now [8:10] ; Friend Of The Devil [5:#43] ; Passenger [5:08] ; Brown Eyed Women [5:20] ; The Music Never Stopped [8:17] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod051520.mp3 Please observe the safeguards to stay well, join us on Facebook if you like, and don't forget the Friday night 'Shakedown Street' videos on YouTube. thanks so much for your kind support.
As we close out the month of January, I decided to feature the first show the band performed back in 1989. This one comes from the Henry J Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland California on February 5, 1989. While there was alot of anxiety among the faithful that this might be the last time the band would be allowed to play in the relatively intimate confines of the Kaiser, the band came out this night determined to put on a show. They feature a number of relative 'new' tunes, including the first time the Brent song 'We Can Run' was played. The 'Touch of Grey' opener was a great start, then a energetic 'Stranger' into a smart 'Franklin's Tower'. I even think the 'Rooster' here is quite good with Jerry adding some really nice sounds. We'll hear the second set next week, including another 'first time' played.. Grateful Dead Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center Oakland, CA 2/5/89 - Sunday One Touch Of Grey Feel Like A Stranger > Franklin's Tower ; Little Red Rooster ; Althea ; We Can Run* ; Desolation Row ; Don't Ease Me In You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod013120.mp3 "Winter gray and falling rain, we'll see summer come again, Darkness falls and seasons change (gonna happen every time). Same old friends the wind and rain, Summers fade and roses die, You'll see summer come again, Like a song that's born to soar the sky."
This week's Deadpod features the anniversary of a show that took place 32 years ago at Town Park in beautiful Telluride Colorado. It was the weekend of the celebrated 'Harmonic Convergence' which marked a globally synchronized mediation event as well as an exceptional alignment of planets. Needless to say it did not bring about an era of world peace or contentment. Nonetheless, the boys played an interesting show which was a request from a friend of the Deadpod who is marrying his finance there this summer! All the best wishes, Frank! The first set which we will hear this week, features some nice work by Brent, as well as a snappy Mississippi Half Step opener and a 'Big Railroad Blues', always a favorite of mine.. This week's Deadpod is the result of a request from a longtime listener/supporter of the show. It comes to us from early in 1972, March 5th, 1972, only the second show of that legendary year, and the last time that Pigpen played with the band in San Francisco. This show was a benefit for the American Indains, and the Dead were the third band on the agenda. It turns out that they were pressed for time a bit by the 2 AM curfew, and so the second set was a bit abbreviated and rushed. I've only presented here the songs that survive in soundboard format, and while there are several patches and glitches here the exuberance and magic of the performance won me over and I think it will you as well. The jamming, especially Garcia of course, comes at you in staccato bursts, in songs like Mexicali Blues and El Paso. The highlight of the show of course, is Pigpen's 'Good Lovin'. It is here, around the 6:40 mark, that some report the first occurance of the legendary 'mind left body' jam. I find the entire performance to be uptempo.. it makes me smile.. I hope you do too. Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 3/5/72 - Sunday One (first 6 songs missing) Tennessee Jed [6:50] Jack Straw [4:52] China Cat Sunflower [#5:48] > I Know You Rider [4:#55] Mexicali Blues [3:32] You Win Again [349] El Paso [#4:18] Casey Jones [#5:57] Two Good Lovin' [16:24] Not Fade Away [3:20] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:08] > Not Fade Away [3:10] Encore One More Saturday Night [#4:29] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod092818.mp3 keep the faith..
What would you do if your pastor resigned this Sunday? One megachurch was blindsided when a prominent young pastor unexpectedly resigned during Sunday morning service. Find out who.
It took me a bit to decide what to bring you this week, but after I ran across this show I knew it was the right choice.. This is one of those classic live Dead sets from 1969, this one comes from Boulder CO, April 13th. It features everything you\'d expect - great Pigpen raps, wild, far-out jamming and some magnificent moments from Garcia - most notably on the Dark Star and the Eleven. Personally, I\'m always blown away by a really well-played and heartfelt Death Don\'t Have No Mercy - it ends the set I\'m bringing you this week. I hope you enjoy it... (note there are some anomalies - Lovelight cuts early, Doin\' that Rag is cut at the start and the Dark Star has a splice.. still I think the outstanding quality more than makes up for them.... )Grateful Dead Ballroom - University of Colorado Boulder, CODate 4/13/69 - Sunday One [1:45:18 +] Turn On Your Love Light [24:55#] % Doin\' That Rag [#4:18] ; [0:45] ; Good Morning Little Schoolgirl [8:09] ; [1:05] ; Morning Dew [11:02] [0:14] % Dark Star [24:01] > St. Stephen [7:50] > The Eleven [13:02] > Death Don\'t Have No Mercy [9:55] As always you can listen to this week\'s Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod092807.mp3
