We are all aware of the damage electrostatic discharge can wreak on components and electronic products. We mitigate ESD damage through various forms of monitoring. We wear wrist and heel straps, stand on ESD-safe flooring, utilize ESD work stations, and more. We even have ESD testing locations that will test a human standing on a specialized testing station. But what happens the moment that person steps off the tester? My guests today are Dr. Daan Stevenson and Dr. Jonathan Tapson of IONA Tech, a manufacturer of a novel wearable ESD monitoring device that provides constant real time ESD monitoring.Normally, I don't talk about specific products on the show. We usually limit our conversations to best practices. This is a little bit of an exception to my normal rule. From time to time, a product is introduced that is so novel, it's worthy of a conversation. And that's the case here. Dr. Daan Stevenson is the Chief Executive Officer of IONA Tech. Daan has a background in mechanical and aerospace engineering. During his doctoral research, he studied the high voltage charging of spacecraft, which are electrical capacitors in the same way that the human body is. While working to design an automated ground station for UAVs, he frequently damaged electrical components from electrostatic shocks. This motivated the creation of IONA Tech, with the goal of advancing technology in ESD mitigation. My other guest is Dr. Jonathan Tapson, Chief Technology Officer of IONA Tech. Jonathan was Professor of Electrical Engineering at Western Sydney University before moving to Telluride Colorado in 2016. He spent his early career conducting sensor and instrumentation research, with a strong industrial focus. During this time he spun out three companies from his research, all of which are successful today. His specialties include low-noise circuits and systems design, mechatronic design and the integration of machine learning into real-time systems.Contact Information:Daan Stevensondaan@iona.techJonathan Tapsonjon@iona.techWebsite:https://www.iona.tech

So this whole experience I'm about to share with you is really special to my heart. We have 3 episodes coming up that I got to record while at the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival 2021 last month. And ya'll know I used to live in Telluride Colorado and find it's where my soul is most at home. So I was over joyed when I got to collide my new life here in Cincy with Q102 and my former life in Colorado at the Festival, by recording some rad podcasts and meeting some legendary genre-shapers of our time. First here is Mitch Woods, he is a rock-a-boogie pianist who brings the freakin' heat wherever he goes. I have no idea how old this man is but I gotta tell ya, he has the energy of a 23yr old who just fell in love for the first time.  We recorded this conversation in an ice hockey rink that was turned into a venue, here we are in the green room sitting cozy on a couch :) Please enjoy our short little convo and check out his music here Mitchwoods.com

Pete Ripmaster has always considered himself an athlete, but it wasn’t until much later in his life that he discovered running. When his mom passed away, Pete was in a real bad place personally, so he packed up everything he owned and knew, and headed into the Alaskan wilderness to find himself. After his soul searching experience, Pete returned to the lower 48 and found himself in Telluride Colorado.Soon after, he decided to make good on a promise to his mom to do great things, and honored her legacy by running 50 marathons in 50 states and raising over $62,000 for cancer research in the process. This experience fueled his hunger to accomplish even more and served as a springboard for his cause-driven running journey. After having overcome numerous setbacks and challenges, five attempts, and a near death experience, Pete became the 2018 champion of the Iditarod Trail Invitational. Now, you’ve likely heard of the Iditarod before, and it probably conjures up thoughts of a dog drawn sled making its way through the Alaskan wilderness in sub-zero temperatures. Keep that mental picture, but now image a grueling 26 day, 1000-mile self-supported foot race through the harsh winter conditions of the Alaskan wilderness, and you have the backdrop for this inspiring story of adventure, redemption, and a life well lived. In this episode Pete shares his unbelievable story of persistence and change. While his mountaintop moments are worth celebrating, Pete is quick to tell you that lessons are learned the valleys of his life, too. Through his struggles with depression, Pete has become a passionate advocate for mental health and the practice of mindfulness. He believes everyone deserves the opportunity to live a life of hope.Episode Linkshttps://peteripmaster.comhttps://www.iditarodtrailinvitational.comhttp://wncoutdoorcollective.comhttps://www.exploreblackmountain.comMental HealthPublic Speaking - Pete RipmasterExploration LocalMike Andress, Hostmike@explorationlocal.comhttps://explorationlocal.com828-551-9065

If you haven't figured it out yet, a big part of this program is trying to figure out what makes people happy. Personally I believe happiness isn't just something that happens. I think we all try to create things in our lives that bring us joy. But as Benjamin Frankly once said The Constitution guarantees all Americans the right to pursue happiness but it's up to each of us catch it. I learned that quote from my friend Los Angeles filmmaker Roko Belic. At the 2011 Mountain Film Festival in Telluride Colorado he shared with me his latest project a movie he calls Happy.   “The way that I got into making Happy is very simple,” Belic said. “A friend of mine named Tom Shadyack called me and said that he had read an article in the New York Times that compares countries in terms of happiness. And this article said that although America is one of the richest countries it's nowhere near the happiest. And Tom said ‘you know this is something I've been thinking about because I live in Hollywood and I'm surrounded by very successful wealthy, talented people who've essentially achieved an exaggerated version of the American dream and yet many of them are not happy. So we should get to the bottom of this and explore happiness in a documentary film.' And I said Absolutely. Sounds amazing!” So Belic spent more than four years traveling the world to explore many different cultures and communities. Along the way asked several leading experts in the science of human behavior exactly what it means to happy. And through the making of this film he discovered for himself and those of us in the audience a few simple answers to one of life's most complicated questions. The film Happy by Roko Belic isnow  in festival and special screening distribution. For more information visit www.thehappymovie.com. An interview with the author Greg Mortenson It's been on the New York Times bestseller list for 197 weeks. The book Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin continues to engage and inspire millions of people around world. This story of one man's journey to build schools for children in the most remote regions Pakistan and Afghanistan has helped to forge a better understanding of how to encourage peace and cooperation where there has been only war and armed conflict for decades. But when I met with Mortenson at the MountainFilm Festival in Telluride Colorado he shared with me his latest project. “The second book I wrote, Stones Into Schools, is more about Afghanistan," he said in an interview. "It's also about the lessons I learned in Three Cups of Tea about empowering the people, listening to the elders, about really letting the people themselves do the work. So I tried in the to really show that people themselves can be empowered.” Stones Into Schools isn't just a sequel to a popular piece of non-fiction. It's a testament to the impact one person can make in the lives of others. By providing the people of Afghanistan with the tools they need to help themselves, Mortenson is doing more than building schools. He's paving a long road toward a world that lives in peace. A short documentary called Stones Into Schools based on the new book is currently part of the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour. Stones into Schools - Watch more Videos at Vodpod. And though there are plenty of old photos in his latest film “The National Parks: America's Best Idea,” Burns also uses modern images taken by naturalist photographer Quang Toan Luong. Luong's images feature prominently in Burns' National Parks film series due to premiere on PBS station nation wide in late September. Having visited all 58 National Parks at least three times each Luong's photographs help to tell their story and show us clearly what they look like today. Not at all once but over three days. As you can imagine the film lived up to expectations. The most beautiful landscapes of North America in the wilds of the west were the perfect backdrop to portray the history of our wonderful National Parks. Though Ken Burns' reputation as a filmmaker is well known, little do most realize his documentary film franchise has a literary silent partner.
