This week we get a second set that is almost as hot as the weather around here this week - it comes to us from July 1st 1980 in San Diego California.  An excellent China>Rider opens the set and contains some of my favorite jamming of the evening.. the China cat jams from Garcia in particular are noteworthy, as is Brent's contributions.  A rare 2nd set Peggy-O follows CC Rider, then we are treated to an early Brent contribution of 'Far From Me'.  The boys take off from there with some great combos the rest of the way.. I love the Wharf Rat in particular but the playing throughout is full of energy and emotion.. I hope you enjoy it..  They return for a double encore .. featuring 'Alabama Getaway' and of course, 'Johnny B Goode'..          Grateful Dead San Diego International Sports Arena San Diego, CA 7/1/80 - Tuesday Two     China Cat Sunflower [8:09] > I Know You Rider [6:25] > C C Rider [6:57] ; Peggy-O[7:27] ; Far From Me [3:59] ; Uncle John's Band [7:39] > Playing In The Band [10:52] > Drums [9:05] > Space [7:28] > Truckin' [7:53]>  Wharf Rat [10:48] > Around And Around [4:14] > Good Lovin' [7:17] Encores: Alabama Getaway [5:11] > Johnny B. This week's selection - a birthday request from a good friend of the Deadpod - takes us back to the last show of the June 1974 east/midwest tour which took place in Springfield Massachusetts on June 30, 1974. The first set, which we will hear this week, features some outstanding leads by both Jerry and Phil and a great song selection. Be patient during the opening number 'Don't Ease Me In' which is plagued by mix problems (as were most opening numbers in the Wall of Sound era), they clear up for a beautiful rendition of 'Black Throated Wind'. 'Peggy O' follows, a relatively new song, this is only its fifth performance. 'Greatest Story Ever Told' is a sizzler, as is 'Cumberland Blues'. The highlight of this set, if not the show, is the 'Playin' In The Band' > 'Uncle John's Band' > Playin' sandwich. As usual during this time they take things to unexplored spaces and it makes for a most wonderful time.          Grateful Dead Springfield Civic Center Arena Springfield, MA 6/30/74 - Sunday One     Don't Ease Me In [3:32] ; Black Throated Wind [6:44] ; Peggy-O [5:19] ; Jack Straw [4:41] ; Loser [6:16] ; Greatest Story Ever Told [5:40] ; Cumberland Blues [6:04] ; Dire Wolf [4:18] ; Playing In The Band [19:07] > Uncle John's Band [8:54] > Playing In The Band [6:07]    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod061920.mp3   Thanks so much for listening and for your kind support!    'The black-throated wind keeps on pouring in And it speaks of a life that passes like dew'

A energized show from 49 years ago highlights this week's Deadpod, from Winterland on May 30, 1971. We only have a partial second set from this Sunday night show but its in fine quality and the band is in top form for this period. The recording starts with a partial 'I Know You Rider' and you immediately wish the entire show survived. A fine 'Sugar Magnolia' follows,  and then 'Cumberland Blues' rocks out. Pigpen makes himself known with a powerful 'Big Boss Man'. 'Me & My Uncle' and 'Deal' follow, displaying the usual energy they were played during this time. 'Truckin' brings a big response from the crowd, but it leads into the highlight of the evening, a 15 minute plus 'Turn On Your Lovelight' that is pure Pigpen at his peak. 'Uncle John's Band' follows and then 'Casey Jones' closes out the set. A very energetic 'Johnny B Goode' ends the evening at must be well past the 2:00 AM curfew that Bill Graham warns us about following 'Lovelight'.    This was released on a limited edition vinyl record store day release in November 2012. However this comes from the Charlie Miller tapes.    Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 5/30/71 - Sunday Two     (MISSING) China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; Sugar Magnolia ; Cumberland Blues ; Me And My Uncle ; Deal ; Truckin' > Turn On Your Love Light ; Uncle John's Band ; Casey Jones Encore     Johnny B. 'm hoping that this week's Deadpod will help keep you cool during this hot, hot weather many of us are experiencing this week. This second set starts off with a cover of the Beatles' 'Why Don't We Do It In The Road?' .. clearly a goof, or so I hope :) They get into the real show with a 'China Cat>I Know You Rider' which features some nice work by Jerry and Brent (if a bit speedy :).  'Playin' In The Band' follows with some nice jazzy interludes and flows into a nice 'Uncle John's Band'. Brent follows with one of his darker tunes, 'Don't Need Love' which leads into a quite interesting Drums/Space. They come out of that into the highlight of the set (at least for me) a hauntingly beautiful 'China Doll'. They end with the 'Throwing Stones>Not Fade Away' combo, but return for a great double encore of 'Brokedown Palace' and 'Johnny B. Goode'     Grateful Dead Greek Theater - University of California Berkeley, CA 7/15/84 - Sunday   Two       Why Don't We Do It In The Road [4:07] > China Cat Sunflower [5:30] > I Know You Rider [4:32] ; Playing In The Band [8:31] > Uncle John's Band [11:28] > Don't Need Love [6:45] > Drums [4:39#] > Space [7:26] > China Doll [5:35] > Throwing Stones [9:05] > Not Fade Away [8:57] Encore Brokedown Palace [4:46] ; Johnny B. Happy Winter Solstice!                 and of course Merry Christmas..........   While this is the last Deadpod before the holiday, I will naturally include some great acoustic Dead music for your enjoyment. However since it is also a few days before the holiday, I thought I would break with tradition a bit and include some electric Dead as well. The show I selected for this week really dictated this choice, its a fine show that was performed back on April 3rd, 1970 at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati Ohio. I bring you part one this week. Unlike most acoustic sets, this show features an acoustic set right smack in the middle.. so rather than try to rearrange the songs I thought I would bring you the first part this week and finish up next Friday night. Some of the highlights here include a great jam in 'China Cat'>'I Know You Rider' , Pigpen on 'Hard to Handle' and Katie Mae', and the first ever preformance of 'Candyman' . Don't miss the alternative lyrics on a nice acoustic 'Friend of the Devil'.     Grateful Dead Field House - University of Cincinnati Cincinnati, OH 4/3/70 - Friday One - 2:07:30   Casey Jones [#3:45];[0:34] ; China Cat Sunflower [3:04] > Jam [1:40] > I Know You Rider [4:04];[0:36] ; Hard To Handle [4:58];[0:40] ; Dancing In The Street [10:04];[0:28] ; Me And My Uncle [2:57];[0:38] % Friend Of The Devil [3:42];[0:38] ; Deep Elem Blues [5:16] [0:33]%[0:10] ; Candyman [5:01];[0:19] ; Wake Up Little Susie [2:17] > Black Peter [7:20] > Uncle John's Band [6:15] ; Intro (1) [2:52] ; Katie Mae [3:51];[0:13] %   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122118.mp3     I wish you and yours a peaceful, joyous holiday.   thank you for your support

This week's Deadpod features the 2nd set from the performance on September 19th, 1990 at Madison Square Garden in New York.   This is one of the better latter day Dead shows. Bruce brings a spark to Jerry, and the boys are jamming full blast here. The jam out of the great Let it Grow with Bob, Bruce and Jerry is outstanding! But don't overlook the fine Goin' Down the Road.. This week another super long set from 1974 - this of course is the second set from August 6th, 1974 at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City New Jersey. What a way to start - a wonderful 'Uncle John's Band' with a great jammy intro.. other great highlights from this set include a personal favorite - a nice 'Black Peter', an excellent 'Loose Lucy' and 'Ship Of Fools' - a bit more uptempo which I think suits the song well. Again here in this set you'll see no dedicated 'drums->space' segment, but there is plenty of jamming here, especially in the long closing segment which features 'Sugar Mag' into 'He's Gone', a long jammed out 'Truckin' (where Bobby fugs up the lyrics :) then a nice 'Spanish Jam' into an  unusual 'Other One' jam.. they go out with a nice 'Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad' and top off the sandwich with 'Sunshine Daydream'. US Blues follows as the encore of a most wonderful show.   Grateful Dead Roosevelt Stadium Jersey City, NJ 8/6/74 - Tuesday   Two   Uncle John's Band [10:25] ; El Paso [4:09] ; Black Peter [10:20] ; Loose Lucy [4:58] ; Big River [4:43] ; Ship Of Fools [6:24] ; Me And My Uncle [2:43] ; Row Jimmy [8:05] ; Sugar Magnolia [6:34] > He's Gone [11:#21] > Truckin' [16:19] > Spanish Jam > The Other One [12:08] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [5:38] > Sunshine Daydream [2:22] Encore U.S. Blues [5:36]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod081718.mp3   hope this fine set of magic helps you hang onto summer just a little bit longer....   thanks so much for your kind support of the Deadpod!

This week's Deadpod features the beautiful 2nd set from February 9th, 1973 from Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. Plenty of breakouts make this a rare and unusual set, including 'They Love Each Other' , 'Eyes of the World', 'China Doll' and 'Wave that Flag'. Some great exploratory jamming in Eyes marks a unique version that sounds unlike any other played that year. There are a few splices here and there, but I don't think they will effect your enjoyment of this fine show. This week we feature the second set from the band's performance on April 10th, 1983 at Morgantown, West Virginia. This is a fine sounding, energetic set, in which I think Brent's contributions really shine. I love the intro out of space into 'the Wheel' and of course the 'China Doll' that comes out of the return into 'Playin'.  The jamming in Playin' may not quite get out there as far as you'd like but overall this is a very fun well-played show. Here's hoping that this set of fine early Dead music will help warm  your bones in the middle of this cold cold January... We continue with the band's performance from January 16th, 1970 at Springer's Inn in Portland Oregon. While we start out with a Cumberland Blues that is a bit shortened, this tape more than make sup for it with early versions of classic songs that are delightful to me as I listen to their early development.  'Easy Wind' is a classic, as is the wonderful 'Dire Wolf'...   Because the set is a bit short, I've included a cut from a recently released set from one of my favorite bands, Joe Russo's Almost Dead.. this cover of Cream Puff War just seems to fit in perfectly here and I hope you enjoy it.. the rest of this wonderful set is available on archive.org..     Grateful Dead Springer's Inn Portland, OR 1/16/70 - Friday   part 2 Cumberland Blues [#4:13#] % Me And My Uncle [#2:52] > Dire Wolf [4:10];[1:00] ; Uncle John's Band [6:51];[0:45] ; Easy Wind [8:00];[2:15] ; Cryptical Envelopment [1:48] > Drums [0:49] > Space [0:59] > Drums [3:54] > The Other One [8:32] > Cryptical Envelopment [1:16] > Cosmic Charlie [6:#19];[0:12]   Joe Russo's Almost Dead Brooklyn Bowl, 12/29/2016 Cream Puff War     You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011918.mp3     thanks so much for your support!!

This set starts with a beautiful jam into Ship of Fools. The pace picks up with a sprightly Big River, featuring some great Garcia runs. Jerry slows the pace again with a soulful, 'Black Peter'. 'Around and Around' gets the show swinging again and them we're transported to deep space for a wonderful 'Dark Star ->Spanish Jam' - this one was chosen to appear on the 'So Many Roads' compilation for good reason.. sit down and soak this up. The jam dissolves into a swinging 'U.S. Blues'; I really enjoy Keith's contributions here, a great jazzy take. Merry Christmas .. Happy Hanukkah   This year's holiday edition of the Deadpod features one of the best acoustic performances of 1970. This takes place at the Fillmore East in New York City on September 20th, 1970. The acoustic set, which we present today, is not only a fine performance but also a fine recording. David Grisman plays mandolin on 'Friend of the Devil' and David Nelson joins with another mandolin on a slow soulful,  'Big Railroad Blues', both continue through Ripple. There is some speculation that Jerry plays piano on 'To Lay Me Down', clearly a wonderful highlight here. Nelson and Grisman are back with mandolins on a fine  Rosalie McFall, following a rare acoustic 'Truckin'. I love  'Cumberland Blues' here.. but then again I usually love this song.. Jerry plays an electic during 'New Speedway' but the vibe is very acoustic. 'Brokedown Palace' provides a fitting conclusion to the set..   Following, I decided to feature one more cut from Holly Bowling's beautiful work 'Better Left Unsung'.. this is 'Eyes of the World (Louieville KY 61874).. it speaks for itself..       Grateful Dead Fillmore East New York, NY 9/20/70 - Sunday   One - 1:02:46   Intro [0:03] ; Uncle John's Band [6:47] % Deep Elem Blues [5:51] % Friend Of The Devil [3:32] % Big Railroad Blues [3:14] % Dark Hollow [2:56] % Ripple [4:20] % To Lay Me Down [5:12] % Truckin' [5:35]%[0:12] ; Rosalie McFall [2:24] % Cumberland Blues [5:04] % New Speedway Boogie [9:31] % Brokedown Palace [5:13]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122316.mp3   My most sincere hope that all of my friends here have a very healthy and happy Holiday...   thanks for your support...........   the professor

I think you'll enjoy their performance here as they bring the crowd well executed versions of some great songs.    The highlight of this 1hour 41 minute set is probably the 'He's Gone'->'Truckin'->'The Other One'->'Sing Me Back Home' combination that occurs in the middle of set 2. Happy Halloween!   Always a favorite among Deadheads, while Halloween doesn't happen until Monday I thought it only appropriate to share one of the classic Halloween performances with you this week. This set is one of two the band played on Halloween, 1970 from the gym at the State  University of New  York at Stoney Brook. A fine show, as most are from this era, it starts with quite a rare treat - 'Till the Morning Comes' - sadly they don't do the very best with this, but  then we get a great 'Hard To Handle'. The China->Rider is especially enjoyable (although marred with a nasty cut at the end ). Some of the other highlights include an electric 'Dark Hollow', a nicely done 'Brokedown Palace' and the very last performance of 'Viola Lee Blues'. This is far from the best version of this, but it is interesting to see them go into 'Cumberland Blues' out of it.  This is raw Dead, not polished, not the best performance of this classic year, and probably not the best recording of this year that one can find, yet I think its great fun to hear and hope you do as well...      Grateful Dead University Gymnasium - State University of New York Stony Brook, NY 10/31/70a - Saturday   Early Show   Till The Morning Comes [3:24];[0:31] ; Hard To Handle [7:53];[0:45] ; Mama Tried [2:28];[0:35] ; China Cat Sunflower [2:55] > Jam [1:56] > I Know You Rider [3:11#] % Dire Wolf [3:47];[0:39] ; Cold Rain And Snow [6:06];[0:33] ; Me And My Uncle [3:19];[0:35] ; Dark Hollow [2:53];[0:41] ; Brokedown Palace [5:11];[0:29] ; Viola Lee Blues [9:00] > Cumberland Blues [4:16] > Uncle John's Band [5:48]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102816.mp3   Have a fun and safe holiday!!      My heartfelt thanks to my friends whose contributions make the Deadpod possible!!

After an admittedly somewhat bumpy first set, we return to Foxboro during the Summer of 1990 for the second set of the band's performance there on July 14th, 1990. They come out of the gate (following an amusing 'Take a step back') with a pleasant and somewhat jazzy Eyes, followed by a reggae inspired Estimated Prophet. There's some great work by Phil here, followed by a dreamy 'Crazy Fingers'. Uncle John's Band follows and the crowd breaks into a singalong.. Following drums and space, we get what would turn out to be the final rendition of Brent's 'I Will Take You Home', followed somewhat abruptly by 'I Need a Miracle'. The band closes the set with three rockers - 'Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad', 'Throwing Stones' and 'Turn on Your Lovelight.. ' They return for a rare double encore, with a prophetic 'Last Time' followed by the always sweet 'We Bid You Goodnight'..    Sullivan Stadium, Foxboro MA (7/14/90)   Set 2   Eyes of the World Estimated Prophet Crazy Fingers Uncle John's Band drums I Will Take You Home I Need a Miracle Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad Throwin' Stones Turn on Your Love Light   This Could Be the Last Time We Bid You Goodnight   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod071516.mp3   Thanks for picking us up, and even more, to those of you able to support the Deadpod through a kind contribution, very much appreciated.    May this find you all in peace and light.

Here's a wonderful record of a time when there truly was noone who did anything like the Grateful Dead.. this comes to us from April 12th, 1970 at the Fillmore West. This recording combines an audience and a soundboard source and does have some flaws, but I'm confident you'll listen to it with the same amazement it brings me. Of course the fact that they played with Miles Davis on the same bill during this run must have contributed to their desire to really bring it.  The show starts with a great Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, but I would bring your attention to the wonderful Garcia jam that flows between China Cat and I Know You Rider.. so sweet!  I love the Pigpen numbers on this one and the electric Deep Elem and of course a great Viola Lee Blues !    Grateful Dead  Fillmore West  San Francisco, CA   4/12/70 - Sunday  One - 1:53:56   Tuning [0:16] ; Good Morning Little Schoolgirl [17:25]; Casey Jones [4:26] Mama Tried  China Cat Sunflower [1:49] > Jam [2:19] > I Know You Rider [4:09] >   Drums [0:12] > Good Lovin' [1:42] > Drums [4:14] > Good Lovin' [4:39] Candyman [#4:17] Deep Elem Blues  Cumberland Blues [4:30]; Dire Wolf [4:00] Dancing In The Street [11:25]; Black Peter [8:20] Uncle John's Band [7:01] It's A Man's, Man's, Man's World [7:19]; Viola Lee Blues [13:52] > Feedback [1:15];[0:30]   Encore  And We Bid You Good Night  (missing)   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod041516.mp3   Enjoy!  Thanks for supporting the Deadpod!

As you listen to this second set from March 9th, 1981 it won't take you long at all to realize that fans were treated to a special evening of music 35 years ago. The China Cat -> I Know You Rider is such a wonderful beginning to what is a special night of music. Even a casual listener will soon be captured by the wonderful jam into Rider here. The band doesn't let up either, as this is just the start of a great set of music. A snappy Samson follows here, with a great intro by the drummers and some nice keyboard work by Brent. Ship of Fools leads us into the heart of this set, the Estimated ->Uncle John's Band->Drums/space->Other One->Stella Blue. A classic combination, done most exquisitely.  Treat yourself and get lost in this section of the show. They follow with a fine Good Lovin' and come back for a somewhat sloppy US Blues, but by then.. its all smiles.      Grateful Dead Madison Square Garden New York , NY 3/9/81 - Monday Two China Cat Sunflower [9:28] > I Know You Rider [6:10] > Samson And Delilah [6:55] ; Ship Of Fools [8:10] ; Estimated Prophet [14:10] > Uncle John's Band [11:41] > Drums > Space [3:08] > The Other One [7:43] > Stella Blue [9:49] > Good Lovin' [6:33] Encore U.S. Blues   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod031116.mp3   I hope you enjoy this week's Deadpod.. This week we return to the Berkley Community Theater for the second set of the band's performance back on August 14th, 1971. The tape cuts into Truckin' in progress,  luckily however the excellent jam that ends the song is preserved.. from there we go into an early set Drums, and then, suddenly if not unexpectedly, the bombs drop signalling a truly great Other One to follow. Phil really shines on this one, and it leads to a truly psychedelic jam following the first verses. There are some great themes here... see what you can identify! The band flows back into the Other One which really was a signature jam in these days. Following a lengthy tune up Bobby goes into a nice version of 'Me & Bobby McGee'.. The Sugar Magnolia that follows really pops.. they really get cooking here, eventually the move  into a smoldering 'Not Fade Away'-> 'Goin' Down The Road'->'Not Fade Away'.. The boys eventually return for an excellent double encore of  'Johnny B Goode' and 'Uncle John's Band'.... I think this one surely stands out as one of the best shows of a most excellent year.   Berkeley Community Theatre Berkeley, CA 8/14/71 - Saturday Two:   Truckin' [3:#56] > Drums [3:35] > The Other One (1) [16:40] ; Me And Bobby McGee [5:39] ; Sugar Magnolia (2) [5:45] ; Not Fade Away [5:27] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [10:47] > Not Fade Away [3:14] Encores: Johnny B. Arranged chronologically, the tracks reflect the evolution of the group’s sound – and its membership – across more than two decades – from 1967’s “The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)” to 1989’s “Standing on the Moon.” In between, listeners will find the essential tracks that made the band such a cultural phenomenon, including such fan favorites as “St. Stephen,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Friend of the Devil,” “Scarlet Begonias,” and “Hell In a Bucket.”     In addition .. I have ONE copy of the newly released 4 CD set culled from the *80* disk 30 Trips arond the Sun: this set features one cut from each of the 30 years of the band's touring history..           I usually offer these kinds of promotional disks as an incentive to make a donation to the Deadpod.. but since I only have 3 of these to offer, I'll be glad to send them out to three lucky folks who submit an entry today, Friday September 18th (the release date for the 30 trips around the Sun 3 cd set)  to my email address: j.henrikson @gmail com,.. with '30 Trips' as the subject ..  Be sure and include your US mailing address so I can send it to you if you win!!    Of course I'd be glad to get a few donations too!!!      Thanks for your support.. be kind to everyone!

Here is a second set from a show recently requested from one of my listeners, I happen to think this is one of the better shows of this year, June 19th, 1994 from Autzen Stadium in Eugene Oregon. While I didn't think the first set warranted publishing it, I did think this second set would bring a smile to many peoples' faces as they recalled some of the shows they saw in the 90s. This Sunday afternoon set starts off with a nice Scarlet ->Fire, the transition jam and the jam in Fire in particular is unique and interesting and I think you'll enjoy even Vince's contributions here and in this set. They follow with Samson and Delilah (it was a Sunday after all), then into Way To Go Home, and this one is surprisingly good, in my opinion, although it was never anyone's favorite. Then comes the heart of this set, a very good Playin' In the Band into Uncle John's Band. Billy and Mickey do a great Drumz and Space. The Other One that follows is decent if predictable, but I always enjoyed the 90's Wharf Rats and this is a quite good one. Bobby ends the set with a good reading of Good Lovin' .. then the boys come out and do a sweet 'Knockin' as the encore.  This is a decently sized second set, especially for the era, and I hope you'll enjoy it as I thought I should mix it up a little this week on the Deadpod.    Autzen Stadium, Eugene, OR (Sunday, 6/19/94)   set 2 Scarlet Begonias -> Fire on the Mountain Samson & Delilah Way to go Home Playing in the Band -> Uncle John's Band -> Drums -> Space -> Other One -> Wharf Rat -> Good Lovin' E: Heaven's Door   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod060515.mp3     My most sincere thanks for your kind and generous support.   Life is Good, let's keep Dancin'!

This week's Deadpod features the second set from the Band's performance on March 18th, 1971 at the Fox Theater in St. Louis Missouri. This is clearly a great performance from a great year. Starting with the Other One the band really delivers a great performance. Jerry does a great version of Wharf Rat here and the band displays how it can turn on a dime with Billy as the solo drummer in the transitions, especially from Greatest Story into Johnny B. Goode.  The highlight of this set might have to be Pigpen on the Caution - this is a great version..      Grateful Dead Fox Theatre St. Louis, MO 3/18/71 - Thursday Set 2   Truckin' [#6:41] > The Other One [0:17] > Drums [5:53] > The Other One [12:#05] > Wharf Rat [11:50] ; Sugar Magnolia [6:13] ; Greatest Story Ever Told > Johnny B. This is such a great show that I'm astounded that I've not played it on the Deadpod until today.. as the 40th anniversary of this great show approaches I will right that oversight. One of the greatest first sets ever.. from Dijon France, September 18th, 1974. It opens with a warm, delightful Uncle John's Band.. then the great songs roll on, Jack Straw, Friend of the Devil, Black Throated Wind, Scarlet Begonias (!).. its an insane first set and the recording is magnificent as well. There's no reason to enumerate every great song here, but the 'To Lay Me Down' is clearly one of the most powerful ever.,    I hope you enjoy this masterpiece.      Grateful Dead Parc des Expositions Dijon, France Wednesday   One Uncle John's Band [8:39] ; Jack Straw [5:11] ; Friend Of The Devil [4:20] ; Black Throated Wind [6:53] ; Scarlet Begonias [8:34] ; Mexicali Blues [3:09] ; Row Jimmy [7:26#] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:14] ; Deal [4:29] ; The Race Is On [3:08] ; To Lay Me Down [8:08] ; Playing In The Band [23:31]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod091214.mp3     Thank you for listening and for your support, which makes it possible to publish this music each week..

I think this second set from 7/31/82 is a fitting treat for this 3 day Memorial Day weekend. This one is a real keeper.. it starts out with an incredible Scarlet ->Fire.. Jerry really takes the lead here with a number of very nice solos, each different and each wonderful to listen to.. the seque into Fire is very nicely done as well.  They follow with an enteretaining reggae-esq Estimated, then a somewhat fast Eyes goes into a great Drums segment, Phil leads them out from there into a very interesting Uncle John's Band.. the Truckin' that follows has a bit of a false start but a strong finish, and this leads into the highlight of the set, a gorgeous Morning Dew.. the boys warp it up with a Saturday night and a rather anti-climatic Dough knees encore..  Still I can't imagine anyone went away displeased..      Grateful Dead Manor Downs, Austin TX,. 7/31/82 set 2: Scarlet Begonias Fire on the Mountain Estimated Prophet Eyes of the World drums Uncle John's Band Truckin' Morning Dew One More Saturday Night Don't Ease Me In   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod052314.mp3     The Deadpod is made possible through the kind financial support of my listeners. The second set of the Dead's performance at Winterland on March 18th, 1977, is often singled out because of the fact that it was the only time the band performed the 'complete' Terrapin Station, including the instrumental section labeled 'At A Siding' and here noted in the track listings as 'Alhambra'. This performance most closely resembles the studio version released on the album of the same name and the band never again (until their most recent ensembles) played the complete cycle. There are of course other notable highlights in this second set, including excellent versions of Samson & Delilah, and Brown-Eyed Women , a furious drums and an over the top version of Not Fade Away... The song placement is quite unusual as the Not Fade Away goes into a St. Stephen (rather then the other way around) to end the set. The band returns for a lovely Uncle John's Band to complete what was a most excellent way to usher in the spring tour of 1977.    Winterland Arena, San Francisco, CA (3/18/77) Set 2   Samson and Delilah Brown Eyed Women Good Lovin' Ship of Fools Estimated Prophet Terrapin Station The Alhambra drums Not Fade Away St. Stephen Around and Around   Uncle John's Band   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod032814.mp3   I hope the sun is shining through your backdoor today.............. thanks for listening and for your support of the Deadpod..

This week we stretch out the New Year festivities with a really BIG Deadpod featuring the 2nd and 3rd sets from the NYE show of 1979-80. This is a very long show, so I suppose that we  might forgive Jerry for getting lost occasionally.. he more than makes up for it on some really excellent numbers in these two sets.  The boys' ring in the new year with, as often the case, Bill Graham's favorite, Sugar Magnolia.. and you can imagine the bedlam with the countdown and balloon drop.. They then play a very nice 2nd set, highlighted with a lovely Ship of Fools and an excellent Deal. The real treats here happen in set 3, with a long Althea to open, followed by a wonderful Uncle John's Band.. The boys really get cooking on the Not Fade Away. Jerry does some amazing things during Stella Blue, and they close the set with the first Sunshine Daydream in a year.. Ah summer.. in the midst of its heat and humidity its wise for us to sit back and breath it in.. and savor it for passes like dew.. this week's Deadpod is of course the second set of a show that seems to me to embody the kind of setlist that a summer GD show should have.. lyrics that speak of starlight and songs that twinkle and sparkle like the summer night sky. Crazy Fingers.. Uncle John's Band.. Terrapin.. and of course Morning Dew.. even the Quinn the Eskimo reminds me of warm summer shows outdoors watching the boys .. I hope you've been lucky enough to see Furthur this year.. for all of us we have the chance to savor this recording and close our eyes and remember warm summer nights and the music that could take us along with those breezes..  Grateful Dead Oxford Plains Speedway (7/2/88) Crazy Fingers Playin' in the Band Uncle John's Band Terrapin Station drums The Wheel Gimme Some Lovin' All Along the Watchtower Morning Dew Sugar Magnolia Quinn the Eskimo You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod071913.mp3 Thank you for listening, and for your support... which I rely on to be able to bring you the Deadpod..  peace.

The second set from Giants Stadium, E. Rutherford NJ, on June 17th, 1991 was one of the best played sets of that year. I think you'll agree that the Saint of Circumstance through Drums the band is tightly wound and playing and listening well to each other. Hornsby continues to scatter the Dark Star theme throughout the set, culminating in a flatout Dark Star Jam after Ship of Fools, (the first since June of 1974!).. The Truckin' that follows is very uptempo and moving and goes into perhaps one of the best 'New Speedway Boogies' you'll find in any performance. This leads into a Uncle John's Band.. full and well played, but he band goes back for more exploration.. into a very nice jam with an Other One tease, then back into the Dark Star Theme again... here pay particular attention to the nuances of Garcia's playing.. the boys are definitely in a fabulous place as they move slowly into Drums and Space... The China Doll that follows is just about perfect.. The boys move into a nice Playin' In the Band and an always uptempo 'Sugar Magnolia' to close the set.. The encore of  'The Weight' brings it all back home and I can't imagine leaving this show unhappy....  Grateful Dead 6/17/91 Giants Stadium E. Rutherford NJ set 2: Tuning Jam -> Saint Of Circumstance ->  Ship Of Fools ->  Dark Star Jam ->  Truckin' ->  New Speedway Boogie ->  Uncle John's Band ->  Dark Star Jam -> Drums -> Space -> China Doll -> Playing In The Band -> Sugar Magnolia Encore: Tuning The Weight  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod062113.mp3 Thank you for your support of the Deadpod - I depend on you to be able to continue this project of love..  Enjoy your summer my friends!

A perfect way to see in the lovely month of June, this week's second set from the Baltimore Civic Arena, May 26th, 1977, is as fine a set of Grateful Dead music as one could hope to hear. Perhaps not an alltime 'classic' but certainly a wonderful companion to any worth while activity you could hope to accomplish in this wonderful season. This set features a lovely 'High Time' - one of my favorites, as well as a Terrapin->Estimated->Eyes combo that is played wonderfully. Not Fade Away is often taken for granted..I recommend you listen to this one, and harken back, if you were so lucky to the times you were able to watch them standing in those circles of light serenading us with this wonderful rocker... The Uncle John's Band encore is of course, just exactly perfect. I trust you use this good music as a salve for your heart.. it does mine good. This week's featured show on the Deadpod comes from a request from one of my listeners who has recently been digging on shows from 1970 - a truly great year - I only wish there were more recordings of the band from this year. This week's comes from February 23rd in Austin Texas. While this is obviously not a complete show, it still provides so much high energy Dead that I'm sure you'll enjoy it. For me beyond the obvious pleasures of the acoustic 'set' is the wonderful Not Fade Away which is topnotch. Grateful DeadThe Auditorium, Austin TX02/23/70 Electric SET101. This week we get to hear the second set from the Parmount Theater in Seattle Washington, September 29th, 1977. I think this is quite a nice set with an outstanding He's Gone, Stella Blue and an Uncle John's Band encore to soothe your soul... I hope you enjoy it! In other news - the Europe 72 Vol. 2 CD contest is OVER! I received a goodly number of entries and I want to thank each of you for all the kind things you had to say! I'd love to respond to each of you but I probably don't have time so I hope you don't take offense - I also wish I had enough CDs for everyone but of course I don't. I'll email the lucky winners and send those out within a few days. Please remember the CD is available at rhino.com and on dead.net. As summer (unofficially) starts this weekend I can't think of a better way to bring it in than with the rousing Scarlet->Fire that starts off this week's Deadpod. While I only have the second set of this show, I think you'll agree that it's well worth your time. This show features a wonderful pre-Drums seven song segment that starts with a rousing China-Rider, then goes into a rare Stranger->Comes a Time sequeway. Always a favorite, the Comes A Time is blusey and very well played. The band then drives into Estimated into a wonderful He's Gone and a very unexpected Uncle John's Band before a short Drums and Space. The rest of the show is equally well-played - then they pull out a rare double encore to confirm they had as much fun as we do listening. Here's a real treat from 1969.. this show starts with a great acoustic set, occasioned, says Jerry, because Billy has been delayed on his way there.. this week I'm bringing you both the acoustic and electric set (I've had to remove a couple of songs who were just cut too badly to broadcast).
