What a classic set list we have on this week's Deadpod. While this show took place back in 1991, none of the songs debuted earlier than 1972. Better yet, they are all played with joy and authority reminiscent of earlier periods in the band's history.  The tight opening China>Rider portends a great second set, and we are not disappointed for following this we have a fine 'Looks Like Rain' highlighted by some Healy echo on Bobby's vocals, then Garcia leads the ensemble into a long and dreamy 'Dark Star. The Star goes seamlessly into an interesting drums and space but then returns before leading into a continuation of 'Playin' In the Band' from the previous evening. Jerry then brings out 'Black Peter' in the ballad spot and delivers a soulful rendition. The set closing 'Lovelight' brings the crowd one last chance to shake their bones. Jerry returns for a great encore choice: 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue'.    Grateful Dead 1991-04-01 Greensboro Coliseum - Greensboro, NC Two      China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider Looks Like Rain Dark Star [22:37] > Drums [8:20] > Space [9:46] > Dark Star [1:16] > Playing In The Band [3:28] > Black Peter Turn On Your Love Light Encore      It's All Over Now, Baby Blue   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod041125.mp3   "You must leave now, take what you need, you think will last But whatever you wish to keep, you better grab it fast"

At the risk of featuring too many sets from this period I decided to bring you this long, wonderful first set from March 22, 1973. While most of these songs don't feature stratospheric jams, they are quite well played in my opinion, and this set does include a truly beautiful 'Bird Song' and a great ending with 'China->Rider- >Playin' In the Band'   There are two sources used, the majority is provided by a Betty Cantor board, probably one that was in a group that suffered water damage and mold - the missing reel was probably thrown away.. The missing segment here, starting with 'China Cat' is from a Dick Latvala cassette.    The fire marshall was apparently giving the band a hard time and threatening to shut the show down, which accounts for some of the warnings about keeping the aisle clear..      Grateful Dead Utica Memorial Auditorium Utica, NY 3/22/1973 - Thursday   One [1:43:22]    The Promised Land [2:58]  Sugaree [7:34]  Mexicali Blues [3:23]  They Love Each Other [5:09]  Looks Like Rain [7:11]  Deal [4:32]  Beat It On Down The Line [3:07]  Bird Song [11:26]  Jack Straw [4:32]  Box Of Rain [4:38]  You Ain't Woman Enough [3:00]  The Race Is On [2:54]  Row Jimmy [7:44]  El Paso [4:15]  China Cat Sunflower [6:02] > Jam [1:48] > I Know You Rider [5:08]  Playing In The Band [15:01]    You can listen to this week's Dead here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod032125.mp3     As always thanks for your kind support.

This week's Deadpod takes us back to the early days of 1973, this one was played in St. Paul Minnesota. This was when they were figuring out the wall of sound, and the first part of set 1 suffers from several sound issues as they try to dial in the mix, most notably in a bad start with a 'Promised Land' that suffers greatly. Don't let that scare you off from the rest of this long set. There is plenty of outstanding renditions here, especially from 'Loose Lucy' on culminating in an excellent 'Playin In the Band' to close the set. A surprise is to hear 'He's Gone' in the second slot here..      Grateful Dead St. Paul Auditorium St. Paul, MN 2/17/1973 - Saturday One      The Promised Land He's Gone Looks Like Rain Box Of Rain Wave That Flag [6:02] Mexicali Blues Bird Song Beat It On Down The Line Loose Lucy Me And Bobby McGee Stella Blue El Paso They Love Each Other [5:34] Playing In The Band [15:16]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod022125.mp3 Thanks for your kind support!!

Happy New Year! ... but this NYE set by the Dead should put you in the mood to say goodbye to 2024 and to ring in a brand new 2025... This show occurred at an important turning point for the Dead, as they moved forward with many 'new' tunes and with Keith and Donna as members of the band (Donna makes her vocal debut here on 'One More Saturday Night'). The sound on this FM broadcast is generally very good and the band is tight. The boys play here with a great youthful enthusiasm.. They open with 'Dancin' In the Streets' which they wouldn't play again until June of 76.. This is a long and fun first set, clocking in at over 90 minutes.. Pig has some great moments here - Mr. Charlie, Chinatown Shuffle and Next Time You See Me are great..  All in all a great first set, we'll hear set 2 next week..    Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 12/31/1971 - Friday One      Dancing In The Street [#8:29]   Mr. Charlie [3:38]   Brown Eyed Women [4:22]   Beat It On Down The Line [2:56]   You Win Again [3:36]   Jack Straw [4:31]   Sugaree [7:01]   El Paso [4:14]>   Chinatown Shuffle [2:35]   Tennessee Jed [6:41]   Mexicali Blues [3:16]   China Cat Sunflower [4:40] > I Know You Rider [5:18]   Next Time You See Me [4:30]   Playing In The Band [6:09]   Loser [6:15]   One More Saturday Night (1) [4:23#]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122724.mp3  Thanks for your support this year.. it means alot..  Happy New Year.

This week's Deadpod takes us down south to Atlanta Georgia, where the Dead played the first of 36 shows at the Omni back on December 12, 1973. This long and very tasty first set features many of the classics, all played quite well. It features only the second time that 'Peggy-O' was played, great sound throughout, and a very long and spacey 'Playin' In the Band' to end this first set.  Next week we'll play both set 2 and the soundchecks which are amazing in themselves.. We welcome December this week by returning to the second set of the band's performance at the Golden Hall in San Diego on November 24, 1979. This set has an upbeat beginning with 'Alabama Getaway' going into a classic 'Greatest Story Every Told' - listen for Phil in that wild transition. 'Ship of Fools' follows, with Jerry giving us a find rendition complete with some extended soloing where it doesn't usually occur. 'Terrapin Station' follows, leading into a long and interesting 'Playin In the Band '.   Drums goes into a short Space, then we're treated to 'Sailor>Saint', followed by a fine 'Wharf Rat'. The boys then rock it up with a good 'Sugar Magnolia' and the obligatory 'One More Saturday Night' encore.    Grateful Dead Golden Hall - San Diego Community Concourse San Diego, CA 11/24/1979 - Saturday      Two      Alabama Getaway [7:22] > Greatest Story Ever Told [5:07] Ship Of Fools [9:55] Terrapin Station [12:20] > Playing In The Band [14:23] > Drums > Space [1:47] > Lost Sailor [6:10] > Saint Of Circumstance [5:27] > Wharf Rat [9:27] > Sugar Magnolia [8:06] Encore      One More Saturday Night [4:46] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120624.mp3  Hope this finds you warm and dry!  My thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod!

This week the Deadpod travels to January of 1980 for an unusual benefit show that the Dead appeared at for Cambodian refugees in Oakland, along with Jefferson Starship, the Beach Boys and Carlos Santana and John Cippolina.  This is a tight and well played set throughout. The opening 'Jack Straw' into 'Franklin's Tower' is crisp and edgy. 'Minglewood' is a standout as well. I really enjoy all of these, but the 'Playin' is probably the highlight, although the Santana solo in 'Not Fade Away' is a treat as well; its interesting to hear these three great guitarists playing together..    Grateful Dead Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena Oakland, CA  1/13/1980 - Sunday One      Jack Straw [5:42] > Franklin's Tower [11:44] New Minglewood Blues [6:56] Tennessee Jed [8:21] > Looks Like Rain [7:12] > Don't Ease Me In [7:16] Playing In The Band [10:41] > Drums [7:15] > Not Fade Away (1) [14:27] > Sugar Magnolia (1) [7:30] Encore      U.S. Blues [#4:18] Comments     Cambodian Refugee Benefit. I'm scheduled for open heart surgery next week and I'm not sure when I'll be able to be back here sharing these great songs with you. Don't give up on me as I don't plan to give up.. I'll be back as soon as I am able but in the meantime I'd encourage you to listen to some of the old Deadpods - the entire run is still available..  Keep your light on and thanks my friends for all of your support and for listening..

Holy Smokes! It's Labor Day weekend!  Hopefully this second set from the second Field Trip at the Oregon Country Fairgrounds can help you get in the mood for some fun and frolic as we celebrate the passing of another summer...  This one starts with the debut of 'Keep Your Day Job' -- and not in the encore slot!  Another debut - 'West LA Fadeaway' is also on the menu here. The pre-drums 'Playin In the Band' lifts things up while the post drums 'Wheel'>'Other One' is probably the highlight of this set..  Jerry pulls out a very unusual 'Dupree's Diamond Blues'  as the encore here which I'm sure delighted the faithful.. As we come to the end of the Days Between, and reflect on what Jerry gave us I thought it appropriate to present a classic show from when the band was young and ferocious. This comes to us from August 6, 1971 at the Hollywood Palladium. Long considered a classic, I'm sure you'll agree if you haven't yet been fortunate enough to hear this performance. This first set contains no clunkers.. I think each of these songs is a top-notch rendition, but for sure I have to point out 'Mr. Charlie' and 'Cumberland Blues'.. but the highlight here is clearly the great version of 'Hard to Handle'.. This week the Deadpod returns to Milwaukee for the second set of the band's performance from May 30, 1980.  A fine Scarlet>Fire opens this set, including some excellent jamming in the transition (by the way check out this week's Deadcast for an excellent discussion of 'Scarlet Begonias' here: https://www.dead.net/deadcast) A seemingly short 'Playing In the Band' follows, but there is some excellent improvisation going on in the transition to a sweet drum segment that follows.  'Not Fade Away' flows into the 'Black Peter' and then into an excellent 'Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad'. Bobby ends the set with a nice 'Good Lovin' but the boys really get worked up on the 'Alabama Getaway' encore.. not to be missed..    Grateful Dead Milwaukee Auditorium Milwaukee, WI 5/30/1980 - Friday Two     Scarlet Begonias [9:18] > Fire On The Mountain [10:17] Playing In The Band [13:49] > Drums [7:39] > Space [2:20] > Not Fade Away [5:32] > Black Peter [8:50] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:21] > Good Lovin' [7:01] Encore     Alabama Getaway [4:25]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod053124.mp3  Have a fabulous week! thanks for picking us up!

This week the Deadpod goes back 51 years to February 15, 1973 when the Grateful Dead played a massive show in Madison Wisconsin. this first set clocks in at about 100 minute... it starts with a song they debuted about a week earlier 'Loose Lucy'. They are still warming up when they then 'Beat It On Down The Line'. Several favorites follow, but things really get rolling with a fine, up tempo 'Row Jimmy'. The highlights of the set follow, with a wonderful 'China Cat >I Know You Rider' and a jamming 'Playing In The Band'. This week's Deadpod returns for the second set of the band's performance at the Oakland Coliseum Arena on December 27th, 1989.  Clarence Clemmons makes a surprise appearance on the opening Iko, Iko and adds a great touch here as the band gets the crowd wound up for what is a fine second set. A spacey 'Playin' In the Band' follows - with some extraterrestrial exploration before going into a lovely 'Crazy Fingers'. 'Uncle John's Band' caps off the pre-drums set. The post-drums is highlighted by a truly wonderful 'Morning Dew'.. there was an issue with Jerry's sound at the end but that really doesn't detract from what is a great version.  The boys then surprise the crowd with a double encore -'Johnny B. The Fall of 1972 was an interesting transitional period for the Grateful Dead. They began to explore longer shows with more exploratory jamming. This week's Deadpod, from September 9th of that year, showcases some of these changes. In this week's first set, we have plenty of classic songs, as well as some intense jamming. Some of the highlights for me include the sweet 'Sugaree', 'Bird Song' and Keith's transitions in 'Black Throated Wind'. Of course I have to mention the almost 19 minute long 'Playin In the Band' - long a vehicle for exploration during this period. As you'll see next week, it was not alone in this show.      Grateful Dead Hollywood Palladium Hollywood, CA 9/9/1972 - Saturday      One     The Promised Land [3:02] Sugaree [7:04] Me And My Uncle [3:02] Bird Song [11:24] Black Throated Wind [6:32] Tennessee Jed [7:26] Mexicali Blues [3:30] Deal [4:42] Playing In The Band [18:25] Loser [6:44] Johnny B. This week we feature the second set from the performance on June 22, 1976 near Philadelphia PA. Again, an unusual opener, with a jazzy 'Playin' going into an intense 'Space Jam' - this one featuring the 'Happiness is Drumming' themes that later developed into 'Fire on the Mountain'. 'The Wheel' follows, with its own spacy elements, including some great Phil riffs, before going back into the 'Playin' reprise. The 'Samson' is strong, and the 'Eyes' pretty speedy for this period. The remainder of the show features some nice rocking - 'Dancin', 'Around and Around' and a great 'Goin' Down the Road' into 'Saturday Night'..     Grateful Dead Tower Theatre Upper Darby, PA 6/22/1976 - Tuesday Two      Playing In The Band [8:55] (2) > Space Jam [14:07] > Drums [2:30] (3) > The Wheel [5:16] (4) > Playing In The Band Reprise [2:58] (5) [2:00] Samson And Delilah [6:51] (6) % Eyes Of The World [12:26] > Dancing In The Street [12:07] Around And Around [6:58] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [8:15] > One More Saturday Night [4:37]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod062323.mp3   Thanks for your kind support! Happy Cinco de Mayo! As we roll into the first weekend in May, I wanted to bring out the customary tribute to the Kentucky Derby with a fine 'The Race Is On'. This show does that as well as pays homage to the new, fat,  'Here Comes Sunshine' release from Grateful Dead Productions (Here Comes Sunshine from Dead.net). This show does both, although it takes place in early spring of 1973, rather than in May.  This is a huge show - the first set alone has 17 songs that take over one hour and forty minutes of  prime Dead. There are too many highlights to mention. As most of you know I love the sound of the band during this period. I invite you to pay attention to Bill's work here - it really sparkles!   Of course there is 'The Race Is On', and a nice 'Here Comes Sunshine'. But I enjoy Donna on 'You Ain't Woman Enough', and just when you think that they must need a break after a fine 'China>Rider' they roll into a 15 minute 'Playin' In The Band' to close the set..    Grateful Dead Utica Memorial Auditorium Utica, NY 3/21/1973 - Wednesday One     [1:39:37] Bertha [5:32] Me And My Uncle [2:57] Wave That Flag [5:30] Looks Like Rain [7:35] Tennessee Jed [7:34] Box Of Rain [4:46] You Ain't Woman Enough [2:59] Jack Straw [4:37] Row Jimmy [7:38] Beat It On Down The Line [2:58] Here Comes Sunshine [8:05] The Race Is On [2:44] Loser [6:33] El Paso [4:09] China Cat Sunflower [7:18] > I Know You Rider [4:31] Playing In The Band [15:11] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod050523.mp3  We'll enjoy set 2 next week...  " "Well hop in the hack turn on the key Pop in the clutch let the wheels roll free Come on honey, let me sing them away Come on honey, let me sing them away Oh, honey, let me sing your blues away"

Thank you!   This week we conclude our visit to the Uptown Theater with the second set from the band's performance on  January 31, 1978.  This set starts with a fine Scarlet>Fire with a wonderful transition with Donna hitting this just right. The Samson is raging, then the band goes into a delicious Terrapin Station, into a sweet Playing with Phil really adding some nice bottom. A short Drums and Space leads into an intense 'Black Peter', much longer than the earlier versions, then 'Truckin' leads into a set closing, and quite enjoyable 'Good Lovin'.    No encore. I know that I've previously said how enamored I am of the music the Grateful Dead created in the Fall of 1973, specifically during November. Luckily for us, there is an exceptional set that has yet to be released commercially nor here on the Deadpod that I have the privilege of featuring this week. This occurred on November 1, 1973 at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.  While we only have the second set of this wonderful performance, I think you'll agree it is a much-needed respite from the noise and confusion of the current season. The band reaches peaks of expression here on selections such as 'Playin' In the Band', 'He's Gone' and 'Truckin'. The style is jazz forward and experimental. The fact that Billy is alone on percussion probably allows him to be more supple and driving at times, especially during 'He's Gone'.  I recommend time and space to savor this one, I think you'll find its worth it..    Grateful Dead McGaw Memorial Hall - Northwestern University      11/1/1973 - Thursday Evanston, IL Two     Morning Dew [13:35] > Playing In The Band [14:58] > Uncle John's Band [8:#09] > Playing In The Band [6:36]   Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo > He's Gone > Truckin' > Wharf Rat   Sugar Magnolia You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod110422.mp3  As always my sincere thanks for your kind support!

In this week's episode of 36 From The Vault, we celebrate the Series Finale of Dick's Picks as well as the Series Finale of 36 From The Vault. Featuring a complete show from Philadelphia, PA on 9/21/72, we also hear segments of 9/3/72 from Boulder, CO. One of the greatest Dick's Picks of all time, it's a fitting conclusion to the series and yet another showcase of the brilliance of September 1972.Disc One features the majority of Set One from 9/21/72 which includes a brilliant “Bird Song” as well a stunning take on “Loser.” A loose and vibey “China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider” showcases the standards heavy Set I played with exceptional verve. Disc Two straddles Set One and Two from 9/21/71 and is highlighted by an outstanding “Playing In The Band” closer before “He's Gone>Truckin'” brings us into the second frame. An elongated 4+hr show, the staple of Disc Three is an absolutely incredible “Dark Star>Morning Dew.” Nearly 50min of stunning music, including 35+min of deep 1972 jamming, this is one of the greatest pieces of music released in the entire Dick's Picks series. Disc Four closes out the Spectrum show before giving us a three song snapshot from Folsom Field with “He's Gone> The Other One> Wharf Rat.” And with that, we've finally reached the end of the Dick's Picks series.  Here's the second set from the band's performance at Autzen Stadium in Eugene on June 23, 1990.  A rather slow and dreamy 'Eyes of the World' leads us into a great 'Looks Like Rain', Bobby really does it justice here. 'Crazy Fingers' follows and while Jerry's voice is a bit craggy here its still, for me, a pleasure to hear. The band busts it out on the following 'Playin' In the Band' which opens up beautifully into 'Uncle John's Band', then returns for a full-blown 'Playin' Reprise'.  'The Wheel' flows out of space, then after a rocking 'Miracle', Jerry commands us with a powerful 'Morning Dew'.  Being Saturday the obligatory "One More Saturday Night' gets the crowd spinning as the band heads for the exits..    Grateful Dead Autzen Stadium - University of Oregon Eugene, OR 6/23/1990 - Saturday Two Eyes Of The World [15:24] > Looks Like Rain [8:35] > Crazy Fingers [8:24] > Playing In The Band [10:57] > Uncle John's Band % [9:02] > Playing Reprise [2:11] > Drums [8:03] > Space [9:18] > The Wheel [5:32] > I Need A Miracle [5:25] > Morning Dew [10:50] Encore     One More Saturday Night [4:59]     You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod070822.mp3  Thank you for your kind support, and keep a light in your heart during these dark days.

This one is a treat for me to listen to so I hope you enjoy it as much as I do... this second set from the band's performance at the first 'Day on the Green' on June 8, 1974. These '74 Wall of Sound shows are some of my favorites, as you can tell from the opening 'U.S. Blues' that the boys are here in full force. Keith and Phil are rocking and the entire ensemble sounds great throughout. The 'cosmic' 'Playin in the Band' clocks in at over 24 minutes and despite a scream or two from Donna will definitely raise you to a happy place. For me, there is not much music that makes me happier than an 'Eyes of the World' like this one.. In this week's episode of 36 From The Vault we traverse to the heartland of America for a banner show from the wild Summer of 1982 at Alpine Valley Music Theater in East Troy, WI. Featuring a hammy Bob, some heavy playing from Brent, and a lyrical albeit haggard Jerry, it's one of the best pictures we have of what made the 80's such a compelling and confounding time for The Dead. Disc One begins with a jamband staple, the sandwich jam, wherein “The Music Never Stopped” segues in and out of “Sugaree.” Elsewhere Jerry shines again on “Big River,” Brent beams through his Hammond on “CC Rider,” and the whole band connects on “Let It Grow.” While there are arguments to be made that aspects of other shows in the larger Summer ‘82 tour should have been included instead, getting a full First Set from The Dead showcases the highs and lows of the eras. On Disc Two we hear a very typical 80s/90s set two in the sense that “Playing In The Band” bookends a segment of “Drums/Space” and a gorgeous version of “The Wheel” emerges from the interstellar jamming. We close with a stunning take on “Morning Dew” before “One More Saturday Night” & “US Blues” takes us home. It's a breezy and summery cut from the larger series, and one that showcases an era often overlooked in Dead history but clearly has some gems to mine. 36 from the Vault is a production of Osiris Media. Welcome to Season 4 of 36 From The Vault! We begin our final season before the vault closes with a peek back into the world of 1973 Dead. Joining them for their midwest/west tour through the frigid US, we hear the band at the peak of their powers. Capable of transitioning from cowboy rock to show-stopping ballads to deeply psychedelic jazzy jamming, it's one of the most complete Dick's Picks released thus far and a fitting kick off to the season. Disc One opens features some great playing in “Loser” and “Jack Straw” before “Playing In The Band” gives us the first taste of experimental Dead of the set. Disc Two is in strong competition for the best of the set with “Dark Star” -> “Eyes Of The World” > “Mississippi Half Step” going deep. Disc Three is another classic set of some of the best Dead songs ever written played by one of the greatest versions of The Dead. However it's in Disc Four where the true magic strikes again. “Row Jimmy,” “Truckin'” -> “The Other One”> “Eyes Of The World>” “Morning Dew” is close to an hour of brilliant and fluid Dead. A great reminder why we all listen to this band so much, and why Rob & Steve dedicate 2hrs to chatting about them every other week. 36 from the Vault is a production of Osiris Media. This week's Deadpod is from a marvelous sounding tape (with one or two issues) from the Spring of 1971. This set has Phil all over it - I especially love his sound on 'Bertha'. Pigpen does a wonderful 'Next Time You See Me', and 'Hard to Handle' (although it has a very tragic tape flip that loses the end of the song). The boys are tight and their playing is crackling with energy.  No jazzy spacy jams here, but plenty of electric, down and dirty rock and roll.  This week's Deadpod features the second set from February 17, 1979 in Oakland California.  This is a fine set, almost two hours long, and features some excellent improvisational jamming, as well as the return of some music into the rotation and the last time one song would be played.  Might as Well opens th ing sup, then a great 'I Need a Miracle>Bertha>Good Lovin' combo. Garcia is n particularly good form on the Bertha, and Bob and Donna do a splendid job on the vocals on 'Good Lovin'.  We then get the last 'From the Heart of Me' as this night marks Keith and Donna's last show with the band. A nice 'Big Railroad Blues' makes its first appearance since the Winterland shows in 1974. We then get a exploratory 'Terrapin' into a long 'Playin in The Band' before they go into drums.  'The Wheel' is especially fine coming out of Drums and that is followed by a mellow 'Shakedown Street' marking Keith's last real contribution to the sound. The 'Playin' reprise that follows is quite long for that segment and leads into a nice 'Sugar Magnolia'  The 'One More Saturday Night' encore marks the last Donna wail...     Grateful Dead Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena Oakland, CA 2/17/79 - Saturday Two     Might As Well [4:26] ; I Need A Miracle [4:53] > Bertha [7:04] > Good Lovin' [6:38] ; From The Heart Of Me [3:26] ; Big Railroad Blues [4:29] ; Terrapin Station [12:#01] > Playing In The Band [15:13] > Drums [6:37#] > The Wheel [6:42] ; Shakedown Street [12:19] > Playing In The Band [8:14] > Sugar Magnolia [9:10]   Encore     One More Saturday Night [4:41]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod030422.mp3 May the four winds blow you safely home..  thanks my friends

Hey Now! This week we will explore the first set from a great show that took place during a historic run at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester NY back on February 20, 1971. This was during the famous 'ESP' experiments, and it was also the second show without Mickey Hart who had left the band after the first show of this run.  This show contains a number of 'new' tunes (at the time) and you'll see that some have yet to be fully developed (Playin' in the Band for example).  However the band is tight, Pigpen is on and it is really a fine set. This week we continue with the second set from the band's performance at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach California on December 13th 1980.  The set starts with a wonderful Scarlet>Fire. In particular I love the transition here, unique and rhythmic to a high degree, flows into a an excellent Fire, nice Brent highlights.  Jerry has some wonderful solos in the coda here which results in prolonged applause following the conclusion. The pre-drums portion continues with an uptempo 'Playin' In The Band'. This slows into a nice dreamy jam leading into a most excellent Drums and Space made special with the addition of Airto Moriera and Flora Purim during the long drum segment. Space leads into a notable and unique 'Not Fade Away' - I dig it.  In the ballad slot Jerry gives us a soulful 'Black Peter', before the band takes us out with 'Sugar Magnolia' and of course, given the day, a 'One More Saturday Night' encore.      Grateful Dead Long Beach Arena Long Beach, CA      12/13/80 - Saturday Two     Scarlet Begonias [11:14] > Fire On The Mountain [10:05] ; Playing In The Band [11:24] > Drums (1) [13:25] > Space [3:50] > Not Fade Away [6:35] > Black Peter [9:05] > Sugar Magnolia [8:13] Encore     One More Saturday Night [4:26] (1) with Airto Moriera and Flora Purim You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod121021.mp3    I wish for you all love, laughter, health and peace.. my thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod.

Happy Halloween Weekend!  I think we have a great Deadpod to share this week with the second set from the show on October 28, 1979 at the Cape Cod Coliseum in South Yarmouth MA.  This one starts with a really great China>Rider, the energy is off the charts and I really love hearing the Phil bombs and the Jerry's fan outs in Rider. This one is bound to bring a smile and make you wish you were shaking your bones! They follow with a most excellent Samson and Delilah (being Sunday:) and only show it down a bit with the Ship of Fools that follows. Neverfear, a massive 'Playin In the Band' follows with plenty of intricate interplay and jamming.  A fairly short drums and space leads into a 'Stella Blue' then they close things out with a 'Sugar Magnolia' followed by a 'US Blues' encore.  Great stuff.. We have a great second set for your Labor Day weekend enjoyment! This one is from the Greek Theater on August 19, 1989. This one certainly goes against the old thought that the band didn't really jam it out at the Greek.. We start with a fine 'China>Rider'.. the transition really catches fire! A wonderful opener, which then leads right into 'Playin' In the Band'.. the jamming here into a long, pretty, 'Uncle John's' is quite exploratory.  Always a delight, this version of 'Uncle John's' is pretty straight-ahead but nicely paced and sung. The transition into Drums>Space is quite well done. Space is quite exploratory and the accounts which I read say that Candace's lights and effects sync'd quite well to create the spaceship effect :)  The transition into a smoking 'Other One' is on point, including a great Phil bomb. Healy does his effects on Weir's voice but they mostly work here. This is a great Other One! It leads to an explosive finish!  In the ballad slot, Jerry brings out August West.. enough said.. they fly away beautifully.  They close the set with a spirited 'Not Fade Away', then return for a rare 'Foolish Heart' encore. Hey Now! what a great second set this week as we explore the rest of the band's performance on September 26, 1972 at teh Stanley Theater in Jersey City, New Jersey.  Right out of the gate we get a wonderful psychedelic ride with a 20 minute 'Playin In The Band'. Phil is all over this. They follow up with the very last performance of 'You Win Again'. 'El Paso' follows but things get sharp again with Half Step and Greatest Story Ever Told (albeit with a Donna wail). 'Tomorrow Is Forever' is the 2nd of 10 played in 72. Truckin' follows and turns into a monster jam with the Other One jam coming in around the 21 minute mark. This leads to the last 'Baby Blue' until 1974. The encore following the 'Sugar Mag', features a short but unique '26 Miles' tuning before 'Johnny B Goode' sends everyone home..     Grateful Dead Stanley Theater Jersey City, NJ 9/26/72 - Tuesday Two     Playing In The Band [21:15] ; You Win Again [3:49] ; El Paso [4:18] ; Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [7:07] ; Greatest Story Ever Told [5:04] ; Tomorrow Is Forever [5:22] ; Truckin'[20:56] > The Other One Jam [13:14] > It's All Over Now, Baby Blue [7:15] ; Sugar Magnolia [8:36] Encore     26 Miles Tuning [0:24] > Johnny B. Happy 4th of July!  This week we present the second set of the band's performance from Anchorage Alaska on the summer solstice, June 21, 1980.  This is a fine setlist, and most of the songs are quite well-played. I think 'Big Railroad Blues' is a great opener, and the Samson and Delilah' that follows is quite swell. The pre-drums 'Terrapin' has a wonderful segue into the jammin' 'Playin' in the Band'.  Post-drums suffers a bit, but 'Stella Blue' is always a pleasure, and the band gave the fans in the Last Frontier, a nice double encore, with the obligatory 'One More Saturday Night' followed by a somewhat rate for the time period, 'Brokedown Palace'.      Grateful Dead West High Auditorium Anchorage, AK 6/21/80 - Saturday Two     Big Railroad Blues [4:26] ; Samson And Delilah [7:43] ; Terrapin Station [11:59] > Playing In The Band [13:45] > Drums [7:#34] > Space [4:52] > Truckin' [8:54] > Stella Blue [9:25] > Sugar Magnolia [8:44] Encore     One More Saturday Night > Brokedown Palace  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod070221.mp3  I hope you have a joyful and safe holiday!  thank you for your support of the Deadpod!

This week we present the second set from the band's historic run at RFK Stadiuim in Washington D. C. the weekend of June 9, 1973.  This is a fine, long, wall-of-sound, show and it's no wonder that it ranked highly in Dick Latvala's estimation (https://gdsets.com/latvala/1973_06_09.jpg).  While there is some confusion over the exact start of this setlist, I'm choosing to include the Greatest Story Ever Told as the opener. The band then moves into an excellent China>Rider, although some have thought that Jerry was a bit too 'relaxed' in singing the 'wish I was a headlight' line. The 'He's Gone' that follows is slow and soulful, but the pace picks up in the 'Truckin' that follows. If you listen to the transition into the excellent 'Playin' In the Band' that follows you'll hear a nod to 'Here Comes Sunshine' .. while there is no drums/space in this set, the jam that happens in 'Playin' is an excellent substitute.  Of the rest of the set, 'Big River' is very hot, and the 'Eyes of the World' is just exactly perfect. The 'China Doll' that follows is soulful, to say the least. Sugar Magnolia follows, I'm not sure if that was an encore or whether they were simply exhausted on this hot, humid day in D.C.   Grateful Dead RFK Stadium Washington, DC 6/9/73 - Saturday Two      Greatest Story Ever Told China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; He's Gone [14:12] > Truckin' [12:09] > Playing In The Band [20:19#] ; Loser [6:07] ; Me And My Uncle [2:52] ; Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [6:36] ; Big River [4:15] ; Eyes Of The World [11:21] > China Doll [5:23] ; Sugar Magnolia [7:01#]    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod061821.mp3   Have a fabulous week! and thanks for your kind support!

In this week's episode we join the Dead in early 1974 for the very first Wall of Sound show. Just five shows removed from the Dick's Picks one selection, we hear the band in a loose, soundchecky vibe, as they work through the kinks of their revolutionary PA, and begin to dip their toes in the wild and exploratory sounds of 1974. One of the most laid-back Dick's Picks ever, it's a great warts & all peek into the Dead on the cusp of one of their most experimental & challenging years. Disc One is a trot through some DP standards, here played with space and patience in a way that fits the airiness of the Wall Of Sound they were plugged into. We hear the big machine slowly turn on in a choogly “US Blues” before great takes on “Brown-Eyed Women” and “Black-Throated Wind” settle everyone in. The debut of “Scarlet Begonias” and “Cassidy” prelude a truly 1974 take on “China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Ride” before a gorgeous “Weather Report Suite” closes out the set. Disc Two is anchored by an emotive, 45min palindrome segment which reads: “Playing In The Band -> Uncle John's Band -> Morning Dew -> Uncle John's Band -> Playing In The Pand.” The raw power of the band in 1974 is heard clearly here, while their sectional jamming of Fall 1973 is on full display as well. The set ends with some standard takes on out of place tunes, while “Wharf Rat” serves as the emotional climax we all needed during the set. The seeds of the band we'd hear on full display in Dick's Picks 7 and 12 is here in its earliest origins. 36 from the Vault is a production of Osiris Media. In this week's episode we return to the Dick's Picks cannon for our second of three shows in the set from the hallowed month of September 1972. Just ten days prior to the Dick's Picks Vol. 11 show from 9/27/72 in Jersey City, NJ, we hear the band play a similar setlist while highlighting a different centerpiece jam. It's a classic example of The Grateful Dead in a peak month, which showcases the best of the band while highlighting the subtle differences between the band at their best. Disc One is a standard ride through ‘72 dead with staples like “Sugaree,” “Black-Throated Wind,” and “Tennessee Jed” scattered throughout, all played standard-great. The peak of the disc is found in “Bird Song,” that, while it doesn't reach its heights of the DP11 or (coming soon) DP36 versions, is still quite blissful. One Disc Two we're treated to a 20min exploration of “Playing In The Band” before excellent takes off “Truckin'” and “Loser” kick off Set II. Disc Three is highlighted by a monster “He's Gone -> The Other One.” The former caps off at 39 min, it's the longest jam in the entire DP Set and showcases a band on a musical high, shifting gears, embracing risk, weaving in and out of ideas, and displaying their overall penchant for exploration during this period. Like so much of September 1972, we hear two versions of The Dead. One is still breaking out of its shell, reveling in the post-European Tour bliss, moving forward as the unit we'd know through the 70s. The other is already looking ahead to the acid jazz explorations that would define their best experimentations until their hiatus in 1974. 36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media. This week's Deadpod brings us the second set of the band's fine performance at Cal Expo on May 4, 1991. They continue what has been a solid show, opening with the perhaps odd choice of 'Victim or the Crime'. That darkness has to give however as they then move onto a wonderful 'Crazy Fingers' and 'Playin In the Band'. It sounds for a bit at the end of the latter that they will move into Drums, but Jerry and Phil instead turn the sound around to a nice version of  'Uncle John's Band'.  Post-drums features a strong 'Miracle' into a fine version of 'Standing on the Moon'. I find this to be a great version of this powerful tune, as Garcia and company show how they've infused this song with the power and passion that makes it one of the great later day ballads in their repertoire.  Being Saturday, they then close the set with 'One More Saturday Night' and return with a 'Touch' encore.  I think its a fine set and hope you enjoy it as well.  Grateful Dead Cal Expo Amphitheatre Sacramento, CA  5/4/91 - Saturday Two     Victim Or The Crime ; Crazy Fingers ; Playing In The Band ; Uncle John's Band > Drums > Space > I Need A Miracle > Standing On The Moon ; One More Saturday Night Encore     Touch Of Grey  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod050721.mp3    'oh oh what I want to know, where does the time go?"   thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod

In this week’s episode we explore 1976 for the first time in the series with two shows culled together from the Fall of 1976: September 25, 1976 from the Cap Centre in Landover, MD, and September 28, 1976 from the Onondaga County War Memorial in Syracuse, NY. Offering a peek into the transition the Dead was embarking on as they returned to the road, we hear new songs debut, old songs return, the band tighten up, and jams flow with more song-oriented focus, rather than atmospheric jamming.Disc One, in Landover, hears the band showcase energy and tightness as “Bertha” and “New Minglewood Blues” hit on a high. “Let It Grow” features the jamming peak of the disc. Disc Two provides insight into what 1971 Dead would sound like mid-decade as older tunes return, while in the midst of a fluid set. Highlights include a pre-77 “Dancing In The Streets” groove, a “Scarlet Begonias” with a “Fire” jam, some five months before the debut of “Fire On The Mountain,” and a languid “St Stephen/NFA” suite. Disc Three kicks us up to Syracuse with a few repeats, and great playing in “New Minglewood Blues” + another killer “Let It Grow,” this time segueing into “Going Down The Road Feelin’ Bad.” Disc Four might be the peak of the whole release with a transcendent segment that reads: “Playing In The Band -> The Wheel -> Samson & Delila -> Comes A Time> Drums -> Eyes Of The World -> Orange Tango Jam -> Dancing In The Streets -> Playing In The Band.” A full “Playing” suite Set II, a great preview of the highs of 77/78.36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media.   The Dead opened up 1974 with this week's show from Winterland on February 22, 1974. They picked up where they left off in 1973 with a long smoker of a show - we'll hear set 1 this week and set 2 next week. Notable moments include a 22 beat start to 'Beat It On Down The Line', some great Keith throughout, a lovely 'It Must Have Been The Roses', the elusive 'Loose Lucy' and to top everything off, a very long and spacy 'Playin' In the Band' which closes the set and is punctuated with Garcia teasing the 'Slipknot!' jam in several spots.      Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 2/22/74 - Friday     One   U.S. Blues [5:27] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:22] ; Brown Eyed Women [4:52] ; Mexicali Blues [3:36] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [4:43] ; Black Throated Wind [6:53] ; They Love Each Other [5:39] ; Big River [5:08] ; Loose Lucy [6:35] ; El Paso [4:33] ; Row Jimmy [8:30] ; Playing In The Band [20:55] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod022621.mp3    thanks for your kind support

Long considered a classic show, I decided to start off our November here on the Deadpod with this gem from 1972.. from November 19th in Houston Texas. While this tape does have some faults I think overall it is well worth a listen.. The band was originally scheduled to play this show with the Allman Brothers, but the tragic death of bassist Barry Oakley the prior week left them to fill the evening alone - and they more than did..  The opening 'Bertha' suffers from poor mixing but that clears up in time.. nice versions of Uncle, Sugaree and BIODTL follow but things heat up with a wonderful 'Bird Song'. A still relatively new 'Black-Throated Wind' is quite entertaining. Another highlight is one of the best versions of both 'Box of Rain' and 'Tomorrow is Forever'.. Of course the 20 minute long 'Playin' In The Band' is a highlight for any of us who enjoy the spaces the band explores..      Grateful Dead Hofheinz Pavilion - University of Houston Houston, TX 11/19/72 - Sunday     One     Bertha ; Me And My Uncle ; Sugaree [6:47] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:02] ; Bird Song [10:44] ; Black Throated Wind [6:28] ; Don't Ease Me In [3:10] ; Mexicali Blues [3:20] ; Box Of Rain [4:40] ; Tomorrow Is Forever [5:21] ; Big River [4:07] ; China Cat Sunflower [7:04] > I Know You Rider [4:46] ; Playing In The Band [20:12] ; Casey Jones [5:48]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod110620.mp3 Thank you for your support of the Deadpod !

This week we set the way-back machine to 1972, and travel to Waterbury CT, for a show the band played on September 23, 1972. The first set, which we will hear this week, while fairly standard for the period is still quite long compared to later day Dead sets.  The start off with a still-new 'Big River' and I think this is a fine opener, shame they didn't leave it here more often.. There are a passel of great standards here in the first set, including Sugaree, a speedy 'Friend of the Devil', a very nice 'China>Rider' and a wonderful 'Bird Song' (aren't all '72 Bird Songs' wonderful?).  There is some silly if unintelligible banter  before 'El Paso' and they boys leave us with one very exploratory jam in the set closing 'Playin' in the Band' - listen to how Garcia stretches this one out.      Grateful Dead Palace Theatre Waterbury, CT 9/23/72 - Saturday     posters     tickets, passes & laminates One - 1:36:00     Big River [4:41] ; Sugaree [7:21] ; Mexicali Blues [3:27] ; Friend Of The Devil [3:19] ; Black Throated Wind [6:41] ; China Cat Sunflower [7:36] > I Know You Rider [5:26] ; Me And My Uncle [2:58] ; Tennessee Jed [7:40] ; Jack Straw [4:53] ; Bird Song [10:11] ; El Paso [4:29] ; Deal [4:15] ; Playing In The Band [17:55]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod091820.mp3  Thank you for your kind support of the Deadpod!  "Seasons change and roses die...  Here's a long and strong first set from that great year in Dead history - 1972. This comes from Sacramento California from August 12, 1972. This is an especially long first set with some nice surprises therein. 'Sugaree' is tinged with some bluesy elements, and I find it quite enjoyable. There's some interesting chatter to the crowd before 'Uncle' :) and the 'Bird Song' that follows is nicely melodic. Another highlight of this set is the 'Playin' In the Band' which has some fine improvisational spaces in it. I do have to warn you that there is a brutal cut in 'El Paso' which then leads into an cut into 'Tennesse Jed'.. I decided to leave what exists here in the interests of completeness. A beautiful 'Stella Blue' makes a first set appearance. 'Big Railroad Blues' and 'Cumberland Blues' are as rockin' as usual. The 'Casey Jones' that ends the set is quite nice as well. Bobby introduces Keith and Donna, (although Keith had been with the band since the Fall of '71), and explains that Pigpen is home ill :(    Grateful Dead Sacramento Memorial Auditorium Sacramento, CA 8/12/72 - Saturday     One     The Promised Land [2:54] ; Sugaree [7:16] ; Me And My Uncle [2:57] ; Bird Song [10:25] ; Black Throated Wind [6:31] ; Deal [5:14] ; El Paso [2:51#] ; Tennessee Jed [#2:33] ; Playing In The Band [12:30] ; Big Railroad Blues [4:05] ; Cumberland Blues [6:42] ; Stella Blue [7:26] ; Jack Straw [#3:38] ; Casey Jones [6:26]    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod081420.mp3   Thank you so much for your kind support of the Deadpod..   "A broken angel sings.... from a guitar"..
