This week's Deadpod features one of the January shows in the Grateful Dead's history - this one from January 18, 1979 in Providence, Rhode Island. This is a nice first set, energetic, especially for the time period (in a month Keith Godchaux would be leaving), and features some nice versions. I am especially fond of the 'Cassidy' here but there are several excellent tunes in this first set.   Grateful Dead Providence Civic Center Providence, RI  1/18/1979 - Thursday One      The Promised Land [4:22]   They Love Each Other [7:31]   Mama Tried [2:45] > Mexicali Blues [4:10]   Friend Of The Devil [8:10]   Cassidy [4:50]   Jack-A-Roe [4:38]   Looks Like Rain [7:04]   Ramble On Rose [8:15]   New Minglewood Blues [5:29]   Deal [6:47]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011025.mp3  Hope this finds you well and out of harm's way.... thank you for your kind support!

Happy Thanksgiving As is the custom here on the Deadpod, this Thanksgiving we feature an acoustic set and I think we are especially fortunate this year as this set is one of the very best such sets from 1970. From September 20, 1970 this set from the Fillmore East features both David Grisman and David Nelson on mandolin for much of the set, including a very unusual 'Big Railroad Blues' and an acoustic 'Truckin'. Jerry is in particular fine voice throughout, especially on 'To Lay Me Down'.  If you are a fan of acoustic Dead this is a set to savor  .. I hope you enjoy..      Grateful Dead Fillmore East New York, NY 9/20/1970 - Sunday One   Uncle John's Band [6:47] Deep Elem Blues [5:51] Friend Of The Devil [3:32] Big Railroad Blues [3:14] Dark Hollow [2:56] Ripple [4:20] To Lay Me Down [5:12] Truckin' [5:35][0:12] Rosalie McFall [2:24] Cumberland Blues [5:04] New Speedway Boogie [9:31] Brokedown Palace [5:13]    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod112824.mp3    I have far more to be thankful for than I can express here.. first of all to all of you who reached out with your well wishes and concern during my recent surgery and recovery.. to my doctors and nurses who did such a wonderful job helping to get me back home.. and of course to my beautiful wife without which I never would have been able to see this through...

To kick off Season 3, I'm joined by lifelong friend and fellow Deadhead, Tommy Mills, with a special cameo by his better half, Ms Karin Mills.  Karin proved to be an integral part of my conversation with her husband in that she served as “fact checker” for the tales being told, and I'm proud to report that Karin confirmed that all but one of the reported antics were, in fact, accurate.  Well done Karin!Similar to two of my previous guests, Doug “Pops” Smith and Rob “Monkey Man” Diestel, Tommy and I share a brotherly bond having spent our summers on the shores of Lake Champlain at a nearly magical “club” on the New York side of the lake known as Corlear Bay Club in the sleepy rural town of Keeseville.Tommy shares his earliest memories at CBC and he also reveals how he opted to sacrifice a few trips to the lake and instead “got on the bus” in the early 80's and traveled the country following the Dead.  He recalls how he and his band of Deadhead brothers supported themselves on tour by selling PB&J sandwiches, pineapple kabobs, and ice cold ½ oranges  from the back of their VW Golf.He surprises us by admitting that his first love of Grateful Dead music came with the release of the album, Shakedown Street, but it wasn't the heavy hitters like Fire on the Mountain or the album's namesake that hooked him.  It was….FRANCE.  Go figure.  He then widens our musical lens by introducing us to the likes of Donny Hathaway, and George Michael.  Yup, that George Michael.  Finally, Tommy and Karin give us a peek behind the curtain as to what their three beautiful young adult “children” - Delilah, August and Avery - are doing in their 20's, how the empty nest is treating them both and what love music they seek out today.Join us, and let's see where the energy takes us! #IFE #lovemyfriendofthedevil #loveourfactcheckerhttps://music.apple.com/us/album/truckin/663694969?i=663694987https://music.apple.com/us/album/france/663672224?i=663672834https://music.apple.com/us/album/the-ghetto-live/537033638?i=537033644https://music.apple.com/us/album/friend-of-the-devil/663694969?i=663695014

I think we have a good one to send you off on your Memorial Day weekend - this comes to us from May 30, 1980 at the Milwaukee Auditorium in Milwaukee Wisconsin.  The first set starts with a fine 'Jack Straw' - the first minute forty is supplied by an audience tape but hold on because the rest is a fine soundboard. The transition jams from Jack Straw to Franklin's Tower are off the chart.. Jerry is in fine form here.. as evidenced by the hot Uncle and Big River that follow...  They include a 'Passenger' here, without Donna of course, but still smokin'... then Brent does an early 'Easy to Love You'. They bring down the house with a set closing 'Music Never Stopped'.   Grateful Dead Milwaukee Auditorium Milwaukee, WI 5/30/1980 - Friday One     Jack Straw [5:29] > Franklin's Tower [11:15] Me And My Uncle [3:06] > Big River [6:11] Friend Of The Devil [8:36] Passenger [5:10] Easy To Love You [3:29] Althea [8:31] The Music Never Stopped [7:45]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod052424.mp3  I hope you have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day.. take a moment to pause and remember what the holiday is for..

This week we go to the wonderful Greek Theater in Berkeley California for the band's performance on May 21, 1982. I think this was one of the better years in terms of the band's history and this is not only a fine recording but a well-played set that I'm sure you'll enjoy.  The first set starts with a 'Bertha>Greatest Story' combo, one that was fairly new at the time. Jerry slows it down with a 'Friend of the Devil' but the 'Uncle'>'Big River' that follows benefits greatly from his nimble guitar. A nice 'Bird Song' flows into Bobby's 'CC Rider', then we have an excellent 'Althea', not only is Jerry in fine voice, but his delivery is just exactly perfect. Bob delivers a nice 'Looks like Rain' and they close with a boppin' 'Might as Well'.      Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 5/21/1982 - Friday One     Bertha [6:35] > Greatest Story Ever Told [3:50] Friend Of The Devil [8:44] Me And My Uncle [2:55] > Big River [5:09] Bird Song [10:45] > C C Rider [7:27] Althea [7:47] Looks Like Rain [7:35] Might As Well [4:01]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod051024.mp3 Thank you friends for listening and for your kind support.

A massive second set of classic Grateful Dead for your listening pleasure this week on the Deadpod. We present the second set from September 9, 1972 at the Hollywood Palladium.  There is a whole lot of beautiful music here, starting with a fine China>Rider with a great transition. The 'Friend of the Devil' is nicely done, and its nice to hear the faster original tempo. I also welcome hearing the fine contribution here and thorughout from Keith whose keyboards meld so well. The first of many melting moments happens in the fine 'He's Gone' into 'Truckin' transition. while there is a cut here this is an wonderful version. What is completely off the hook though is 'The Other One'. This is about a 34 minute excursion into the far reaches of space, with Lesh and Garcia leading the way to previously unknown plateaus.  I think you'll love this.. and it goes into a very sweet 'Stella Blue'.  Be sure and check out the announcements after the 'Stars and Stripes Forever' for a good laugh...      Grateful Dead Hollywood Palladium Hollywood, CA 9/9/1972 - Saturday      Two     China Cat Sunflower [7:57] > I Know You Rider [5:23] Friend Of The Devil [3:58] Jack Straw [4:41] He's Gone [11:18] > Truckin' [14:#17] > Drums [2:#43] > The Other One [35:06] Stella Blue [6:28#] El Paso [4:40] Casey Jones [6:40] Sugar Magnolia [8:09] Encore     One More Saturday Night Stars and Strips Forever  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod091523.mp3  my thanks for listening and your kind support.

"Being summer, I took off my shirt...." well I'm not taking my shirt off but I am bringing you a summertime treat I think, with an excellent audience recording of the band's performance in Denver on July 14, 1981. As I listened to this tape it just struck me that the feeling of being there that a good audience recording gives you was perfect for this time of the year, when many of us have been lucky enough to experience some live music in person.. I do hope you have! This show has some excellent energy throughout, the Minglewood has a couple very nice Jerry solos, the 'Cassidy' is nicely paced, and leads into a sweet 'To Lay Me Down'.  Weir has some fun with 'Me & My Uncle' which is blistering.. as is the outstanding 'Big Railroad Blues'  The highlight of the set is the Birdsong>Sailor>Saint, however. It is only the the 14th electric birdsong since 9/15/73, and the only time that Sailor comes out of Birdsong. It is excellent.    Grateful Dead McNichols Arena Denver, CO 7/14/1981 - Tuesday One     Cold Rain And Snow [5:40] > New Minglewood Blues [6:41] ; Friend Of The Devil [9:00] ; Cassidy [5:05] ; To Lay Me Down [8:53] > Me And My Uncle [2:55]> Mexicali Blues [4:30] ; Big Railroad Blues [3:48] ; Little Red Rooster [8:23] ; Bird Song [11:48] > Lost Sailor [6:42] > Saint Of Circumstance [7:25] > Don't Ease Me In [3:06]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod071522.mp3 Thanks for your kind support. This week's Deadpod is a short but very sweet show from June 7, 1970 at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. This week's first set is 'relatively' acoustic, that is the first two songs are acoustic, but Jerry uses an electric guitar and Weir acoustic on the remainder of the som et. Frdeadlists.com:  " David Nelson plays mandolin on Cold Jordan and Swing Low, and he and Marmaduke contribute backup vocals. Before Cumberland Blues Garcia says "we're gonna do a few semi-electric numbers. We've got a million new labels." There is a short cut at 2:48 of Cumberland. Marmaduke adds backup vocals to Me And My Uncle." We're closing out our (very) loose trilogy of episodes devoted to sinister schools and magical children. This week it involves pentagrams and witch-burnings, which are always a good time. Our guest, Stephen Lloyd, is better known for his comedy than his horror. He has spent a career crafting some of the biggest sitcoms of the century (some of which helped my marriage survive lockdown). Now, he has turned his pen to something much less wholesome, in his first novel, Friend of the Devil. We talk about Satanism and D&D and the aftermath of Vietnam – all that stuff that made the 80s such a goddamn fun decade for so many. But we also look at how those tendrils reach into the present set of existential crises. Socio-political shi*tshows aside, Stephen discusses the difference between writing horror and writing comedy, he explains the inner workings   of a TV writer's room – and how penning a novel in isolation is a whole other thing. I even ask him for advice on screenwriting, because my ill-conceived ambition knows no bounds…Enjoy! Friend of the Devil was published on May 30th by G.P. On this episode, Stephen Lloyd, four-time Emmy nominated screenwriter/co-producer of two of television's most successful series (Modern Family and How I Met Your Mother) joins the Crew to discuss his debut thriller, FRIEND OF THE DEVIL. FRIEND OF THE DEVIL is a noirish horror story that combines the gleeful gore of 80's slasher pics with the teen angst of a John Hughes film, stirs in the classic sensibilities of Poe and Stoker, and adds a dose of Raymond Chandler for good measure. The result is a keenly original tale that stands apart from its peers. ------- If you want to learn more about the guys from The Crew or see additional author interviews, visit us at http://www.thecrewreviews.com Follow us on social media Twitter | https://twitter.com/CREWbookreviews Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/thecrewreviews Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/thecrewreviews/ Don't forget to subscribe to The Crew Reviews, hit the "LIKE" button, and leave a comment.

Stephen Lloyd is a famed TV writer having written (and produced) for hit shows like How I Met Your Mother and Modern Family. His credits go far beyond that, and now he's trying his hand at something different. Stephen has just published his first novel, 'Friend of the Devil.' I really enjoyed this book. Specifically Stephen's writing style. There's no waiting around for things to get going. The action picks right up on the first page. Stephen has a great knack for giving you the backstory while the main story is going on. I say to him in this conversation that it's kind of like a mystery within a mystery. While I'm trying to figure out what's going on with the main story, I'm also trying to dissect the characters and learn more from them. 'Friend of the Devil' is available now and it's a perfect summer read. I don't think it's classified as a YA but I'd think it's also fairly accessible for teens as well as adults.

This week's Deadpod features a Rex Benefit from March 13, 1985 at the Berkeley Community Theater.  It starts out with a smoking 'Jack Straw', this is quite a pleasure to hear. 'Althea' follows; here Jerry's voice is not in the best of shape, but as is often the case in '85 his playing throughout this first set is quite inspired. The cowboy combo of 'Mama Tried>Mexicali' follows and features both a nice extended jam and some excellent additions by Brent. 'Friend of the Devil' is very nicely done and Jerry sounds much better here. 'Minglewood' has the first Matt Kelly addition, Brent again has a nice solo. The set-closing Deal is high energy as usual to close the short first set.   Grateful Dead Berkeley Community Theatre Berkeley, CA 3/13/85 - Wednesday One     Jack Straw ; Althea ; Mama Tried > Mexicali Blues ; Friend Of The Devil ; New Minglewood Blues (1) ; Bob introduces Matt Kelly ; Deal (1) (1) w/Matt Kelly  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod031122.mp3  'March winds gonna blow all my troubles away...'   thanks for your kind support my friends.

This show marks a significant event in the band's history - the last show with Keith and Donna in the group. It takes place on February 17, 1979 in Oakland. By this time, Keith's contributions had been steadily decreasing and while Donna was still, in my opinion, adding to the sound, it was clear that a change was going to have to happen.  This first set features the return of 'Greatest Story Ever Told' from a five year absence, as well as that last 'Passenger' with Donna (to my ears it never sounded right without her). 'Don't Ease' marks a return appearance as does 'High Time' as the band was mixing up the setlist which had grown a bit stale..The closing 'Lazy Lightin'>Supplication' is a clear highlight here....   Grateful Dead Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena Oakland, CA 2/17/79 - Saturday     One      Greatest Story Ever Told [4:11] Don't Ease Me In [3:23]   Mama Tried [2:31] > Mexicali Blues [4:18]   Friend Of The Devil [9:08] Passenger [4:44]   High Time [6:25]   Looks Like Rain [6:33#]   Jack-A-Roe [5:20]   Lazy Lightnin' [3:26] > Supplication [5:11] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod022522.mp3    Peace

Grateful Dead concerts in the month of January are rather sparse, however one exception is the west coast run that took place in January of 1978.  This week's show took place on January 13, 1978 in Santa Barbara California. It starts out with a nicely played 'Mississippi Half-Step' - while Jerry's voice is suffering a bit from the laryngitis he fought through on this tour - his playing more than makes up for it I think throughout. A rather unusual 'Mexicali Blues'>'Big River' follows, with some jump in it! There is an unfortunate patch in the 'Brown Eyed Women' however it is still quite well played. Lesh is well represented on this soundboard. Another highlight here is the fine version of 'Candyman'.      Grateful Dead Arlington Theatre Santa Barbara, CA 1/13/78 - Friday     One     Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [8:49] ; Mexicali Blues [3:36] > Big River [5:55] ; Candyman [6:59] ; It's All Over Now [7:15] ; Brown Eyed Women [3:00#] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:31] ; Friend Of The Devil [8:47] ; Lazy Lightnin' [3:31] > Supplication [6:06]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012122.mp3  Thank you for your kind support!

We head into the new year with a show from the Winter of 1979 - this comes to us from the Nassau Coliseum on January 11, 1979.  The first set starts off with a wonderful version of 'Sugaree' - Garcia sets the tone for this set right out of the gate.. some wonderful runs here. 'Me & My Uncle' and 'Big River' follows and the latter, in particular, delivers more Jerry magic. Things slow down a bit with a long 'Peggy-O', and Bobby does a nice 'Cassidy' to follow. 'Friend of the Devil' and the 'New New Minglewood Blues follow'. Donna does a rare version of 'From the Heart of Me', before they break into the crowd favorite 'Ramble on Rose'.  The highlight of the set, in my mind, follows with a smoking version of 'Jack Straw'. Despite Weir stepping on Garcia's incredible solo, this one is sure to please. Jerry heads into the break delivering a rocking 'Deal'.  Grateful Dead Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale, NY 1/11/79 - Thursday One     Sugaree [13:50] ; Me And My Uncle [2:54] > Big River [6:20] ; Peggy-O [8:59] ; Cassidy [4:58] ; Friend Of The Devil [9:50] ; New Minglewood Blues [5:35] ; From The Heart Of Me [3:50] ; Ramble On Rose [8:01] ; Jack Straw [6:12] > Deal [6:13]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod010722.mp3   check out Bobby's ad libbed lyrics in 'Jack Straw'...    Stay warm and healthy my friends, and thank you so much for your kind support..

This week's Deadpod features a wonderful recording of the band's performance in Paris France on September 20, 1974. This is a splendid recording, and a very interesting performance. The band opens with a spirited 'Cumberland Blues' followed by a nice 'Jack Straw'. The first-set 'Scarlet Begonias' features some very nice Phil leads. Bobby's vocals are top-notch on the 'Black Throated Wind' that follows. The 'Friend of the Devil' that is performed afterwards, is one of the last 'fast' versions the band played. We get to hear a full 'Weather Report Suite' highlighted by some nice keyboard work by Keith. Jerry follows with a soulful 'Stella Blue'.  We roll into December with a show from late fall 1990 - this one from McNichols Arena in Denver Colorado on December 13th, 1990.  This is a fine, energetic show, and starts off with a very uptempo Jack Straw into Sugaree. 'Wang Dang Doodle' follows to get everyone dancin', then Jer slows it down a touch with 'Friend of the Devil'.  Uncle>Big River contain some tasty Garcia tones, and I think the 'Ramble on Rose' that follows is appreciable different without Brent's touch, but still tight. Bobby brings out the 'Memphis Blues Again' and the boys end the set with their penultimate performance of Hornsby's 'Valley Road'.   Grateful Dead McNichols Arena Denver, CO 12/13/90 - Thursday One     Jack Straw > Sugaree ; Wang Dang Doodle ; Friend Of The Devil ; Me And My Uncle > Big River ; Ramble On Rose ; Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again ; Valley Road  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120420.mp3  If you are interested, I featured the previous night of this run back in Nov-Dec 2014..  Stay well and be kind....

One of the biggest Dead shows of all time, we dive back into the halcyon year of 1977, hearing the band play a greatest hits type of show following their cancelled Summer Tour after Mickey’s car accident. Highlighted by tight playing and a killer setlist, it’s one of the most popular Dick’s Picks ever released. Disc One is highlighted by a brilliant “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” and a gorgeous “Friend Of The Devil.” On Disc Two “Bertha” and “Eyes Of The World highlight the first half of the second set,” while on Disc Three “He’s Gone” fades into a unique jam before easing into a stunning take on “Not Fade Away.” A jam that wouldn’t have felt out of place in 1970, it hears The Dead exploring the darker terrain that fit the early 1970’s more than the Disco era. It’s a great overall snippet of The Dead at another peak period just passed their first hiatus. 36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media. It is edited and produced and mastered by Brian Brinkman. All music composed by Amar Sastry, unless otherwise noted. Logo design by Liz Bee Art & Design. This week we set the way-back machine to 1972, and travel to Waterbury CT, for a show the band played on September 23, 1972. The first set, which we will hear this week, while fairly standard for the period is still quite long compared to later day Dead sets.  The start off with a still-new 'Big River' and I think this is a fine opener, shame they didn't leave it here more often.. There are a passel of great standards here in the first set, including Sugaree, a speedy 'Friend of the Devil', a very nice 'China>Rider' and a wonderful 'Bird Song' (aren't all '72 Bird Songs' wonderful?).  There is some silly if unintelligible banter  before 'El Paso' and they boys leave us with one very exploratory jam in the set closing 'Playin' in the Band' - listen to how Garcia stretches this one out.      Grateful Dead Palace Theatre Waterbury, CT 9/23/72 - Saturday     posters     tickets, passes & laminates One - 1:36:00     Big River [4:41] ; Sugaree [7:21] ; Mexicali Blues [3:27] ; Friend Of The Devil [3:19] ; Black Throated Wind [6:41] ; China Cat Sunflower [7:36] > I Know You Rider [5:26] ; Me And My Uncle [2:58] ; Tennessee Jed [7:40] ; Jack Straw [4:53] ; Bird Song [10:11] ; El Paso [4:29] ; Deal [4:15] ; Playing In The Band [17:55]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod091820.mp3  Thank you for your kind support of the Deadpod!  "Seasons change and roses die... This week's Deadpod features a fine show from June 24, 1976 at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby PA, near Philadelphia. This spring '76 tour features mail order tickets for the first time, and rejuvenated vocals from Bob and Donna, who seem to have benefited from the time off. This particular show was broadcast on FM but this is a soundboard copy and I think it sounds great. This one also has a hilarious opening by Bob and Phil - worth keeping the rather longish tuning in place ;) I think you'll find that Keith is particularly fine throughout, but especially on Big River.. Listen to Jerry make that axe howl in Tennessee Jed ;) And what beats a first set Scarlet Begonias? This week's Deadpod will take us to May of 1978. This show took place in the Field House at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY on May the 7th, 1978, a place that was described as basically an aircraft hanger with terrible acoustics and hot as hell. Luckily the tape we have is pretty good overall because this was a show where you can tell that the band was in great spirits and having fun throughout. I think you'll find that Jerry and Donna, in particular are in great voice, and Keith and Phil are both having an exceptional evening.  There are plenty of highlights to be had here - as well as alot of noodling and playing around between songs.. some of my favorites are the 'Dire Wolf', the great 'It's All Over Now' featuring some very nice Garcia licks, and Passenger, with Donna in great voice.  The closing 'Music Never Stopped' reaches some very nice spots as well..        Grateful Dead Field House - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Troy, NY 5/7/78 - Sunday One     Jack Straw [6:23] ; Dire Wolf [4:03] ; Mexicali Blues [3:42] > Mama Tried [2:36] ; Tennessee Jed [8:31] ; It's All Over Now [8:10] ; Friend Of The Devil [5:#43] ; Passenger [5:08] ; Brown Eyed Women [5:20] ; The Music Never Stopped [8:17]    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod051520.mp3   Please observe the safeguards to stay well, join us on Facebook if you like, and don't forget the Friday night 'Shakedown Street' videos on YouTube.    thanks so much for your kind support.

Welcome back to 36 from the Vault! In Episode 9 we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 8, from Harpur College in Binghamton, NY on May 2,1970. A fascinating volume which sees The Grateful Dead just four months on from their phenomenal run at Fillmore East, documented in Dick’s Picks Vol. 4. Here we see them feature their newest songs, set to be recorded for Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty, in their acoustic set, while allowing their electric set as a review of their career through the 1960s. In the acoustic set, songs like “Friend Of The Devil,” “Dire Wolf,” and “Black Peter” sound raised from the dirt. It’s a peek towards where The Dead will go in the early 70s, as many of their best songs will debut over the next three years. In the electric set, we hear the psych-rock freak-outs of the 60s on their last legs, as “Good Lovin’,” “Viola Lee Blues” and “Dancing In The Streets” showcase the best of The Dead we’re leaving behind. Historically, this may be the biggest transition we’ve heard from The Dead in the entire Dick’s Picks series.Steven and Rob focus on the decision Roberts must make with their name, the explosion of ideas between Garcia/Hunter, what The Dead would do to push themselves forward in the early 70s, and much more. 36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media. This week we mourn the passing of the great Robert Hunter. The Grateful Dead would not have been what they were and are without his voice, his words and his wisdom. Sleep in the stars, Robert.   In his honor I present this wonderful set from September 28th, 1977 at the Paramount Theater in Seattle Washington. Although the first five songs are missing from this Betty Cantor-Jackson soundboard the remainder of the show sparkles and crackles with the unique energy that the band brought to their craft during this year.    I've added a Robert Hunter song from a performance of his back in 1980 in New York. Happy Labor Day weekend! This week's Deadpod takes us to New York state, up to Rochester, where the Dead played a fine outdoor show during the day of September 1st, 1979.  The first set which we will hear this week, breaks from the gate with a fine 'Mississippi Half-Step' > 'Franklin's Tower' combination. This is for me the highlight of this set, almost 20 minutes long. The rest of the first set is fine, high-energy Dead, culminating in only the 2nd time that Bobby sang the 'Lost Sailor'>'Saint of Circumstance' combo.. since this is only the 2nd time he performed 'Saint' check out the crazy lyrics! Here is the second set from the Grateful Dead's performance on Wednesday, May 17, 1978 at the Uptown Theater in Chicago Illinois. I love this recording, and the performance ain't half bad either ;) espcially the Dancin' In The Streets.. The Drums/Space is unusually long for this period but it is fun and contains some unexpected moments from Phil and Donna. Terrapin and Not Fade Away in particular return to the characteristic '78 sound that was a little slower and more twangy as it were, but a pleasure to listen to. Of coursea Werewolves encore ain't half bad either :)     Grateful Dead Uptown Theatre Chicago, IL 5/17/78 - Wednesday Two Samson And Delilah [7:05] ; Friend Of The Devil [8:44] ; Dancing In The Street [14:35] > Drums [18:16] > Space [1:48] > Terrapin Station [10:54] ; Not Fade Away [13:53] ; Around And Around [8:56] Encore Werewolves Of London [7:06]     You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod060719.mp3       Stay tuned for some cool information regarding this new anniversary release and your chance to win!

Happy Winter Solstice!                 and of course Merry Christmas..........   While this is the last Deadpod before the holiday, I will naturally include some great acoustic Dead music for your enjoyment. However since it is also a few days before the holiday, I thought I would break with tradition a bit and include some electric Dead as well. The show I selected for this week really dictated this choice, its a fine show that was performed back on April 3rd, 1970 at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati Ohio. I bring you part one this week. Unlike most acoustic sets, this show features an acoustic set right smack in the middle.. so rather than try to rearrange the songs I thought I would bring you the first part this week and finish up next Friday night. Some of the highlights here include a great jam in 'China Cat'>'I Know You Rider' , Pigpen on 'Hard to Handle' and Katie Mae', and the first ever preformance of 'Candyman' . Don't miss the alternative lyrics on a nice acoustic 'Friend of the Devil'.     Grateful Dead Field House - University of Cincinnati Cincinnati, OH 4/3/70 - Friday One - 2:07:30   Casey Jones [#3:45];[0:34] ; China Cat Sunflower [3:04] > Jam [1:40] > I Know You Rider [4:04];[0:36] ; Hard To Handle [4:58];[0:40] ; Dancing In The Street [10:04];[0:28] ; Me And My Uncle [2:57];[0:38] % Friend Of The Devil [3:42];[0:38] ; Deep Elem Blues [5:16] [0:33]%[0:10] ; Candyman [5:01];[0:19] ; Wake Up Little Susie [2:17] > Black Peter [7:20] > Uncle John's Band [6:15] ; Intro (1) [2:52] ; Katie Mae [3:51];[0:13] %   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122118.mp3     I wish you and yours a peaceful, joyous holiday.   thank you for your support

This week's Deadpod comes as the result of a request by a friend .. some say the highlight of this show is the opener, I wouldn't go that far but it is a surprise, even for a Sunday! The 'Samson & Delilah' opener only happened a couple of times in the band's history but I think the rest of this set is quite entertaining as well. From April 10th, 1983 in Morgantown West Virginia.. I found the interplay between Garcia and Brent Mydland to be very entertaining here (Brent is certainly up a bit in the mix on this tape). 'Tennessee Jed' is a highlight here for me, as is a slow 'Friend of the Devil' that includes some nice surprises from Jerry.   Grateful Dead Coliseum - West Virginia University Morgantown, WV 4/10/83 - Sunday   One Samson And Delilah ; Friend Of The Devil ; Me And My Uncle > Mexicali Blues ; Althea ; Little Red Rooster ; Tennessee Jed ; My Brother Esau ; Might As Well   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012618.mp3   Pass it on! 'Operator' and 'Wake Up Little Susie' make their final appearance in this setlist, and be sure and catch the Godzilla discussion that (who else) Weir goes into.. there's even a little tasty dessert at the end of the set - don't miss it :)   Grateful Dead Capitol Theater Port Chester, NY 11/8/70 - Sunday   One - 43:09   Dire Wolf [4:15];[0:35] ; I Know You Rider [8:10];[0:17#] ; Dark Hollow (1) [3:00];[0:38] ; Rosalie McFall [2:57] ; El Paso [4:39] ; Operator [2:13] ; Ripple [4:13] ; Friend Of The Devil [3:30] ; Wake Up Little Susie [2:11] ; Uncle John's Band [6:10];[0:05]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod112317.mp3   I'm always thankful for the kind friends who listen to the Deadpod and have made it possible all these years. This week we'll feature a fine show from the Fall of 1977, a period which doesn't get as much attention as the Spring but which nevertheless contains some very fine music. This fine show from October 14th, 1977 at the Hofheinz Pavilion in Houston Texas has some wonderful harmonies - check out the wonderful Mississippi Half-Step and the really beautiful Friend of the Devil. This week we celebrate going back to school with a trip back to one of our favorite schools - the Univ of California at Berkeley with a wonderful show at the Greek theater on September 12th, 1981. The show is rad throughout, but this first set is off the hook with a great Shakedown Street opener and a rousing Greatest Story to open the set. Friend of the Devil follows in a slower but quite pretty tempo. El Paso is improved with some Jerry trills.. but the Birdsong that follows is clearly the highlight of this set. The rest of this quite long first set is absolutely first-rate, including a great transition between China Cat and I Know You Rider to close it.   While this is an audience tape, I think the quality is still quite good and hope you enjoy it as much as I have.   Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 9/12/81 - Saturday   One Shakedown Street [13:46] ; Greatest Story Ever Told [3:43] ; Friend Of The Devil [8:35] > El Paso [5:07] ; Bird Song [10:34] > Cassidy [5:10] ; Tennessee Jed [7:51] > Looks Like Rain [8:23] ; China Cat Sunflower [7:26] > I Know You Rider [5:20]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod090817.mp3   thank you for your kind support which makes the Deadpod possible!   There's always time to be kind :)

An early April Fool's present for my Deadpod friends this week. This show, from April 1st, 1984 is much better to my ears than it appears on paper (and the second set, scheduled for next week, is even better). This show was the last show of the first Rex Foundation runs, so it was held in the very small Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Personally I enjoy hearing Brent so upfront in the mix. The other general point that stands out to me is that Garcia is out front and outstanding on most of these songs. Jack Straw, big Railroad Blues, and Tennessee Jed are outstanding.      Grateful Dead Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium San Rafael, CA  4/1/84 - Sunday One Jack Straw [5:48] ; Friend Of The Devil [8:30] ; Me And My Uncle [3:14] > Mexicali Blues [4:51] ; Big Railroad Blues [5:33] ; Cassidy [5:15] ; Tennessee Jed [#7:33] ; My Brother Esau [4:30] > Don't Ease Me In [3:12]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod033117.mp3   Heartfelt thanks to the kind listeners whose support of the Deadpod makes our weekly podcast possible. :)

We're going to welcome in the  month of February with the band's performance from February 1st, 1978 at the Uptown Theater in Chicago. I believe you'l enjoy this excellent recording of the start of a wonderful swing through the midwest in the winter of 1978. This first set starts with a smokin' 'Jack Straw', then moves through a longish 'Friend of the Devil'. 'Mama Tried' and 'Me & My Uncle' follow then a great 'Ramble on Rose'. Following 'Cassidy' the tape is missing the 'Sunrise' that followed, but we do have the spirited 'Sugaree' which closed the first set. I've decided to follow that with an excellent 'Candyman' which was recorded a few days following up in Milwaukee. Sadly not all of that gig, or of several of these performances during the first week of February '78, are available in soundboard format (although parts of several performances were 'picked' to be included in an excellent, now out-of-print Dick's Picks' 18).     Grateful Dead Uptown Theatre Chicago, IL  2/1/78 - Wednesday   One Jack Straw [5:57] Friend Of The Devil [8:08] Mama Tried [2:40] > Me And My Uncle [3:23] Ramble On Rose [7:20] Cassidy [5:10] Sunrise [3:54] - MISSING Sugaree [10:39]   2/4/78 - Milwaukee Auditorium, Milwaukee WI Candyman [6:39]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:   http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod020317.mp3   Thanks for your kind support!   Be well and hold back the darkness!

Merry Christmas .. Happy Hanukkah   This year's holiday edition of the Deadpod features one of the best acoustic performances of 1970. This takes place at the Fillmore East in New York City on September 20th, 1970. The acoustic set, which we present today, is not only a fine performance but also a fine recording. David Grisman plays mandolin on 'Friend of the Devil' and David Nelson joins with another mandolin on a slow soulful,  'Big Railroad Blues', both continue through Ripple. There is some speculation that Jerry plays piano on 'To Lay Me Down', clearly a wonderful highlight here. Nelson and Grisman are back with mandolins on a fine  Rosalie McFall, following a rare acoustic 'Truckin'. I love  'Cumberland Blues' here.. but then again I usually love this song.. Jerry plays an electic during 'New Speedway' but the vibe is very acoustic. 'Brokedown Palace' provides a fitting conclusion to the set..   Following, I decided to feature one more cut from Holly Bowling's beautiful work 'Better Left Unsung'.. this is 'Eyes of the World (Louieville KY 61874).. it speaks for itself..       Grateful Dead Fillmore East New York, NY 9/20/70 - Sunday   One - 1:02:46   Intro [0:03] ; Uncle John's Band [6:47] % Deep Elem Blues [5:51] % Friend Of The Devil [3:32] % Big Railroad Blues [3:14] % Dark Hollow [2:56] % Ripple [4:20] % To Lay Me Down [5:12] % Truckin' [5:35]%[0:12] ; Rosalie McFall [2:24] % Cumberland Blues [5:04] % New Speedway Boogie [9:31] % Brokedown Palace [5:13]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122316.mp3   My most sincere hope that all of my friends here have a very healthy and happy Holiday...   thanks for your support...........   the professor

Here's a top-notch show from the Fall of 1972 to start off your Thanksgiving week right.. this is from 11/14/72, Oklahoma City Oklahoma.. I consider this a very well played 16 song first set.. After an opening 'Promised Land' Garcia gives us a slow, rolling 'Sugaree'.  After the 'El Paso' that follows we get 'Loser' - a personal favorite of mine and a perfect song for the western setting.. the set is full of favorites from the GD catalog.. Bertha, Tennessee Jed, and a smart China->Rider with a smoking transition. Garcia's notes lift us up as we move into that Rider. Box of Rain follows, then he band rocks it out with a quadruple serving of rocking standards - Beat It on Down the Line, a bouncy up-tempo 'Friend of the Devil', 'Around and Around' and the archetypical warning to Casey to watch his speed...     Grateful Dead Oklahoma City Music Hall Oklahoma City, OK Date11/14/72 - Tuesday One   The Promised Land [2:56] ; Sugaree [7:41] ; El Paso [4:18] ; Loser [5:#58] ; Black Throated Wind [6:52] ; Bertha [5:49] ; Mexicali Blues [3:#10] ; Tennessee Jed [7:28] ; Big River [4:16] ; China Cat Sunflower [7:09] > I Know You Rider [5:05] Box Of Rain [4:50] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:12] Friend Of The Devil [3:26] ; Around And Around [3:#09] ; Casey Jones [6:21]   There are some occasional sonic imperfections here, and a few cuts, but I hope you find this a pleasure to listen to as you get ready for the big holiday next week.   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod111816.mp3   Be kind to yourself - Be kind to each other   I am blessed to be able to bring you this music. This week we travel back to the spring tour of 1978 to bring you an excellent recording of a show the boys did back on April 19th, 1978 in Columbus Ohio. They come to play as they open up with a smokin' hot 'Bertha' which then goes into 'Good Lovin' to start the set. This serves to highlight perhaps the slower paced but still beautiful 'Friend of the Devil' that follows. 'Passenger' shows how strong Donna can be, and is probably my favorite tune of hers. A beautiful 'Candyman' then follows, along with a short but straight-ahead 'Cassidy'. 'Peggy-O' and Weir's 'Me & My Uncle->Big River' follow and lead us into a rockin' set-closing 'Deal'. All in all a very well-played and great sounding first set..    Grateful Dead  Veterans Memorial Auditorium  Columbus, OH   4/19/78 - Wednesday One   Bertha [#7:15] > Good Lovin' [6:30] ; Friend Of The Devil [8:19] ; Passenger [4:51] ; Candyman [7:02] ; Cassidy [4:58] ; Peggy-O [7:54] ; Me And My Uncle [3:02] > Big River [5:55] ; Deal [6:44]     You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod042216.mp3   The kind contributions of my listeners keep the Deadpod afloat. Hey Now! No April Fool here!! well yes there is, but its the April Fool the band pulled on its audience 36 years ago, on April 1st 1980, when the boys took the stage and proceeded to swap insturments - Bobby on keyboards, Brent and Jerry on drums, Billy on bass, Michey on rhythm guitar and vocals and Phil Lesh on lead guitar for the weirdest Promised Land ever.. Just had to bring that to you on this week's April Fool edition of the Deadpod.. the rest of the set is straight forward and hard charging... they do a 'real' rendition of Promised Land, followed by a nice Candyman, Uncle->Big River, Friend of the Devil, then a great 'It's All Over Now'. I personally enjoy the set closing Looks Like Rain into a rousing Deal.. We'll hear set 2 next week..    Grateful Dead  Capitol Theatre  Passaic, NJ   4/1/80 - Tuesday One     The Promised Land (1) [3:03] ; The Promised Land [3:49] ; Candyman [6:41] ; Me And My Uncle [3:02] > Big River [5:49] ; Friend Of The Devil[9:22] ; It's All Over Now [7:02] ; Don't Ease Me In [3:05] ; Looks Like Rain [7:27] > Deal [4:17]    (1) instrument swap consisting of (per DeadBase): Bob Weir:keyboards; Brent Mydland and Jerry Garcia: drums; Bill Kreutzmann: bass; Mickey Hart: rhythm guitar and vocals; and Phil Lesh on lead guitar.      You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod040116.mp3   I hope everyone is foolish and happy today!!!!    Thanks for supporting the Deadpod and letting me continue to bring you this fun!

This week's Deadpod is the result of a request from one of my long time listeners' who reported that his wife had one of those annoying incidents where some lout dumped a beer on her during this, her very first Grateful Dead show and nevertheless remained tolerant enough to accompany him to yet another Dead show 15 years later where the same thing happened to the poor lady! Despite all that this is a great show, and I'm happy to bring it to you this week, this comes from Falls Church NY from May 8th, 1980. It opens with a rockin' Alabama Getaway, and shows that the boys are ready to rock on this night! Other highlights for me include a fine 'High Time' and a great version of 'Lazy Lightnin'->Supplication'.. I'll be playing the second set of this show next week..    Grateful Dead Glens Falls Civic Center Glens Falls, NY 5/8/80 - Thursday Set One Alabama Getaway [4:21] > The Promised Land [4:10] ; Friend Of The Devil [9:15] ; Mama Tried [2:28] > Mexicali Blues [4:11] ; High Time [8:06] ; Lazy Lightnin' [3:54] > Supplication [7:06] ; Ramble On Rose [7:35] ; Lost Sailor [6:09] > Saint Of Circumstance [6:07]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod081415.mp3

This is such a great show that I'm astounded that I've not played it on the Deadpod until today.. as the 40th anniversary of this great show approaches I will right that oversight. One of the greatest first sets ever.. from Dijon France, September 18th, 1974. It opens with a warm, delightful Uncle John's Band.. then the great songs roll on, Jack Straw, Friend of the Devil, Black Throated Wind, Scarlet Begonias (!).. its an insane first set and the recording is magnificent as well. There's no reason to enumerate every great song here, but the 'To Lay Me Down' is clearly one of the most powerful ever.,    I hope you enjoy this masterpiece.      Grateful Dead Parc des Expositions Dijon, France Wednesday   One Uncle John's Band [8:39] ; Jack Straw [5:11] ; Friend Of The Devil [4:20] ; Black Throated Wind [6:53] ; Scarlet Begonias [8:34] ; Mexicali Blues [3:09] ; Row Jimmy [7:26#] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:14] ; Deal [4:29] ; The Race Is On [3:08] ; To Lay Me Down [8:08] ; Playing In The Band [23:31]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod091214.mp3     Thank you for listening and for your support, which makes it possible to publish this music each week..

I know that I may have featured too many shows this year from 1972 (is that possible?) but being that its the 40th anniversary of these shows I'm naturally led to take a look at them and often I'm drawn by their quality. 1972 was a wonderful year.. this week I decided to feature this show from the weekend before Halloween due principle to the fact that I really really want to play the Dark Star from set 2.. sometimes this desire to feature a particular segment or song from a show might cause me to feature some music that might not quite measure up.. I suppose that is the completest in me that prefers to feature whole shows rather than 'parts'. This week I'm playing set 1 of this show despite some sound issues with the mix - the vocals are often too low in the mix. Nevertheless the playing is first rate, as is the typically superb song selection. I hope you'll overlook the issues with the mix as I do, in anticipation of the wonderful Dark Star that awaits next week - besides this is a first rate set... :)   Grateful Dead Cleveland Public Hall 10/28/72 - Saturday SetOne: The Promised Land ; Friend Of The Devil ; Jack Straw ; China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; Mexicali Blues ; Box Of Rain ; Me And Bobby McGee ; Candyman ; Me And My Uncle ; Sugaree ; Playing In The Band ;   I really hope that you enjoy this one, in my mind, (and I'm probably biased as I grew up near Cleveland)  the band really played some fine music here...    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102612.mp3   thank you so much for your support of the Deadpod..  I really couldn't do the show without you!!!
