This week the Deadpod travels to London England, to the Rainbow Theater, where the band played eight wonderful shows during 1981. This was the next to last performance at the Rainbow, on October 4, 1981. This recording really highlights Brent and Garcia.. its a bright and open recording I think you'll enjoy. Some of the highlights are the Jack-A-Roe, Beat It On Down the Line, and Brown Eyed Women that come in the middle of the set, but there are really no clunkers here in my opinion. The set closing Deal is a smoker as always... This week's Deadpod features one of the January shows in the Grateful Dead's history - this one from January 18, 1979 in Providence, Rhode Island. This is a nice first set, energetic, especially for the time period (in a month Keith Godchaux would be leaving), and features some nice versions. I am especially fond of the 'Cassidy' here but there are several excellent tunes in this first set. Grateful Dead Providence Civic Center Providence, RI 1/18/1979 - Thursday One The Promised Land [4:22] They Love Each Other [7:31] Mama Tried [2:45] > Mexicali Blues [4:10] Friend Of The Devil [8:10] Cassidy [4:50] Jack-A-Roe [4:38] Looks Like Rain [7:04] Ramble On Rose [8:15] New Minglewood Blues [5:29] Deal [6:47] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011025.mp3 Hope this finds you well and out of harm's way.... thank you for your kind support!
Happy Thanksgiving As is the custom here on the Deadpod, this Thanksgiving we feature an acoustic set and I think we are especially fortunate this year as this set is one of the very best such sets from 1970. From September 20, 1970 this set from the Fillmore East features both David Grisman and David Nelson on mandolin for much of the set, including a very unusual 'Big Railroad Blues' and an acoustic 'Truckin'. Jerry is in particular fine voice throughout, especially on 'To Lay Me Down'. If you are a fan of acoustic Dead this is a set to savor .. I hope you enjoy.. Grateful Dead Fillmore East New York, NY 9/20/1970 - Sunday One Uncle John's Band [6:47] Deep Elem Blues [5:51] Friend Of The Devil [3:32] Big Railroad Blues [3:14] Dark Hollow [2:56] Ripple [4:20] To Lay Me Down [5:12] Truckin' [5:35][0:12] Rosalie McFall [2:24] Cumberland Blues [5:04] New Speedway Boogie [9:31] Brokedown Palace [5:13] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod112824.mp3 I have far more to be thankful for than I can express here.. first of all to all of you who reached out with your well wishes and concern during my recent surgery and recovery.. to my doctors and nurses who did such a wonderful job helping to get me back home.. and of course to my beautiful wife without which I never would have been able to see this through...
To kick off Season 3, I'm joined by lifelong friend and fellow Deadhead, Tommy Mills, with a special cameo by his better half, Ms Karin Mills. Karin proved to be an integral part of my conversation with her husband in that she served as “fact checker” for the tales being told, and I'm proud to report that Karin confirmed that all but one of the reported antics were, in fact, accurate. Well done Karin!Similar to two of my previous guests, Doug “Pops” Smith and Rob “Monkey Man” Diestel, Tommy and I share a brotherly bond having spent our summers on the shores of Lake Champlain at a nearly magical “club” on the New York side of the lake known as Corlear Bay Club in the sleepy rural town of Keeseville.Tommy shares his earliest memories at CBC and he also reveals how he opted to sacrifice a few trips to the lake and instead “got on the bus” in the early 80's and traveled the country following the Dead. He recalls how he and his band of Deadhead brothers supported themselves on tour by selling PB&J sandwiches, pineapple kabobs, and ice cold ½ oranges from the back of their VW Golf.He surprises us by admitting that his first love of Grateful Dead music came with the release of the album, Shakedown Street, but it wasn't the heavy hitters like Fire on the Mountain or the album's namesake that hooked him. It was….FRANCE. Go figure. He then widens our musical lens by introducing us to the likes of Donny Hathaway, and George Michael. Yup, that George Michael. Finally, Tommy and Karin give us a peek behind the curtain as to what their three beautiful young adult “children” - Delilah, August and Avery - are doing in their 20's, how the empty nest is treating them both and what love music they seek out today.Join us, and let's see where the energy takes us! #IFE #lovemyfriendofthedevil #loveourfactcheckerhttps://music.apple.com/us/album/truckin/663694969?i=663694987https://music.apple.com/us/album/france/663672224?i=663672834https://music.apple.com/us/album/the-ghetto-live/537033638?i=537033644https://music.apple.com/us/album/friend-of-the-devil/663694969?i=663695014
I think we have a good one to send you off on your Memorial Day weekend - this comes to us from May 30, 1980 at the Milwaukee Auditorium in Milwaukee Wisconsin. The first set starts with a fine 'Jack Straw' - the first minute forty is supplied by an audience tape but hold on because the rest is a fine soundboard. The transition jams from Jack Straw to Franklin's Tower are off the chart.. Jerry is in fine form here.. as evidenced by the hot Uncle and Big River that follow... They include a 'Passenger' here, without Donna of course, but still smokin'... then Brent does an early 'Easy to Love You'. They bring down the house with a set closing 'Music Never Stopped'. Grateful Dead Milwaukee Auditorium Milwaukee, WI 5/30/1980 - Friday One Jack Straw [5:29] > Franklin's Tower [11:15] Me And My Uncle [3:06] > Big River [6:11] Friend Of The Devil [8:36] Passenger [5:10] Easy To Love You [3:29] Althea [8:31] The Music Never Stopped [7:45] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod052424.mp3 I hope you have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day.. take a moment to pause and remember what the holiday is for..
This week we go to the wonderful Greek Theater in Berkeley California for the band's performance on May 21, 1982. I think this was one of the better years in terms of the band's history and this is not only a fine recording but a well-played set that I'm sure you'll enjoy. The first set starts with a 'Bertha>Greatest Story' combo, one that was fairly new at the time. Jerry slows it down with a 'Friend of the Devil' but the 'Uncle'>'Big River' that follows benefits greatly from his nimble guitar. A nice 'Bird Song' flows into Bobby's 'CC Rider', then we have an excellent 'Althea', not only is Jerry in fine voice, but his delivery is just exactly perfect. Bob delivers a nice 'Looks like Rain' and they close with a boppin' 'Might as Well'. Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 5/21/1982 - Friday One Bertha [6:35] > Greatest Story Ever Told [3:50] Friend Of The Devil [8:44] Me And My Uncle [2:55] > Big River [5:09] Bird Song [10:45] > C C Rider [7:27] Althea [7:47] Looks Like Rain [7:35] Might As Well [4:01] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod051024.mp3 Thank you friends for listening and for your kind support.

A massive second set of classic Grateful Dead for your listening pleasure this week on the Deadpod. We present the second set from September 9, 1972 at the Hollywood Palladium. There is a whole lot of beautiful music here, starting with a fine China>Rider with a great transition. The 'Friend of the Devil' is nicely done, and its nice to hear the faster original tempo. I also welcome hearing the fine contribution here and thorughout from Keith whose keyboards meld so well. The first of many melting moments happens in the fine 'He's Gone' into 'Truckin' transition. while there is a cut here this is an wonderful version. What is completely off the hook though is 'The Other One'. This is about a 34 minute excursion into the far reaches of space, with Lesh and Garcia leading the way to previously unknown plateaus. I think you'll love this.. and it goes into a very sweet 'Stella Blue'. Be sure and check out the announcements after the 'Stars and Stripes Forever' for a good laugh... "Being summer, I took off my shirt...." well I'm not taking my shirt off but I am bringing you a summertime treat I think, with an excellent audience recording of the band's performance in Denver on July 14, 1981. As I listened to this tape it just struck me that the feeling of being there that a good audience recording gives you was perfect for this time of the year, when many of us have been lucky enough to experience some live music in person.. I do hope you have! This show has some excellent energy throughout, the Minglewood has a couple very nice Jerry solos, the 'Cassidy' is nicely paced, and leads into a sweet 'To Lay Me Down'. Weir has some fun with 'Me & My Uncle' which is blistering.. as is the outstanding 'Big Railroad Blues' The highlight of the set is the Birdsong>Sailor>Saint, however. It is only the the 14th electric birdsong since 9/15/73, and the only time that Sailor comes out of Birdsong. It is excellent. Grateful Dead McNichols Arena Denver, CO 7/14/1981 - Tuesday One Cold Rain And Snow [5:40] > New Minglewood Blues [6:41] ; Friend Of The Devil [9:00] ; Cassidy [5:05] ; To Lay Me Down [8:53] > Me And My Uncle [2:55]> Mexicali Blues [4:30] ; Big Railroad Blues [3:48] ; Little Red Rooster [8:23] ; Bird Song [11:48] > Lost Sailor [6:42] > Saint Of Circumstance [7:25] > Don't Ease Me In [3:06] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod071522.mp3 Thanks for your kind support. This week's Deadpod is a short but very sweet show from June 7, 1970 at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. This week's first set is 'relatively' acoustic, that is the first two songs are acoustic, but Jerry uses an electric guitar and Weir acoustic on the remainder of the som et. Frdeadlists.com: " David Nelson plays mandolin on Cold Jordan and Swing Low, and he and Marmaduke contribute backup vocals. Before Cumberland Blues Garcia says "we're gonna do a few semi-electric numbers. We've got a million new labels." There is a short cut at 2:48 of Cumberland. Marmaduke adds backup vocals to Me And My Uncle." This was a birthday request from a great friend of the Deadpod - happy (early) birthday Steve! We're closing out our (very) loose trilogy of episodes devoted to sinister schools and magical children. This week it involves pentagrams and witch-burnings, which are always a good time. Our guest, Stephen Lloyd, is better known for his comedy than his horror. He has spent a career crafting some of the biggest sitcoms of the century (some of which helped my marriage survive lockdown). Now, he has turned his pen to something much less wholesome, in his first novel, Friend of the Devil. We talk about Satanism and D&D and the aftermath of Vietnam – all that stuff that made the 80s such a goddamn fun decade for so many. But we also look at how those tendrils reach into the present set of existential crises. Socio-political shi*tshows aside, Stephen discusses the difference between writing horror and writing comedy, he explains the inner workings of a TV writer's room – and how penning a novel in isolation is a whole other thing. I even ask him for advice on screenwriting, because my ill-conceived ambition knows no bounds…Enjoy! Friend of the Devil was published on May 30th by G.P. On this episode, Stephen Lloyd, four-time Emmy nominated screenwriter/co-producer of two of television's most successful series (Modern Family and How I Met Your Mother) joins the Crew to discuss his debut thriller, FRIEND OF THE DEVIL. FRIEND OF THE DEVIL is a noirish horror story that combines the gleeful gore of 80's slasher pics with the teen angst of a John Hughes film, stirs in the classic sensibilities of Poe and Stoker, and adds a dose of Raymond Chandler for good measure. The result is a keenly original tale that stands apart from its peers. ------- If you want to learn more about the guys from The Crew or see additional author interviews, visit us at http://www.thecrewreviews.com Follow us on social media Twitter | https://twitter.com/CREWbookreviews Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/thecrewreviews Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/thecrewreviews/ Don't forget to subscribe to The Crew Reviews, hit the "LIKE" button, and leave a comment.
Stephen Lloyd is a famed TV writer having written (and produced) for hit shows like How I Met Your Mother and Modern Family. His credits go far beyond that, and now he's trying his hand at something different. Stephen has just published his first novel, 'Friend of the Devil.' I really enjoyed this book. Specifically Stephen's writing style. There's no waiting around for things to get going. The action picks right up on the first page. Stephen has a great knack for giving you the backstory while the main story is going on. I say to him in this conversation that it's kind of like a mystery within a mystery. While I'm trying to figure out what's going on with the main story, I'm also trying to dissect the characters and learn more from them. 'Friend of the Devil' is available now and it's a perfect summer read. I don't think it's classified as a YA but I'd think it's also fairly accessible for teens as well as adults.

This week's Deadpod features a Rex Benefit from March 13, 1985 at the Berkeley Community Theater. It starts out with a smoking 'Jack Straw', this is quite a pleasure to hear. 'Althea' follows; here Jerry's voice is not in the best of shape, but as is often the case in '85 his playing throughout this first set is quite inspired. The cowboy combo of 'Mama Tried>Mexicali' follows and features both a nice extended jam and some excellent additions by Brent. 'Friend of the Devil' is very nicely done and Jerry sounds much better here. 'Minglewood' has the first Matt Kelly addition, Brent again has a nice solo. The set-closing Deal is high energy as usual to close the short first set. Grateful Dead Berkeley Community Theatre Berkeley, CA 3/13/85 - Wednesday One Jack Straw ; Althea ; Mama Tried > Mexicali Blues ; Friend Of The Devil ; New Minglewood Blues (1) ; Bob introduces Matt Kelly ; Deal (1) (1) w/Matt Kelly You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod031122.mp3 'March winds gonna blow all my troubles away...' thanks for your kind support my friends.
This show marks a significant event in the band's history - the last show with Keith and Donna in the group. It takes place on February 17, 1979 in Oakland. By this time, Keith's contributions had been steadily decreasing and while Donna was still, in my opinion, adding to the sound, it was clear that a change was going to have to happen. This first set features the return of 'Greatest Story Ever Told' from a five year absence, as well as that last 'Passenger' with Donna (to my ears it never sounded right without her). 'Don't Ease' marks a return appearance as does 'High Time' as the band was mixing up the setlist which had grown a bit stale..The closing 'Lazy Lightin'>Supplication' is a clear highlight here.... Sometimes you just need to call a lifeline. Well that's what we did this week. The Saudi Invitational is taking place around the globe and it is causing a stir here back home. Grateful Dead concerts in the month of January are rather sparse, however one exception is the west coast run that took place in January of 1978. This week's show took place on January 13, 1978 in Santa Barbara California. It starts out with a nicely played 'Mississippi Half-Step' - while Jerry's voice is suffering a bit from the laryngitis he fought through on this tour - his playing more than makes up for it I think throughout. A rather unusual 'Mexicali Blues'>'Big River' follows, with some jump in it! There is an unfortunate patch in the 'Brown Eyed Women' however it is still quite well played. Lesh is well represented on this soundboard. Another highlight here is the fine version of 'Candyman'. Grateful Dead Arlington Theatre Santa Barbara, CA 1/13/78 - Friday One Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [8:49] ; Mexicali Blues [3:36] > Big River [5:55] ; Candyman [6:59] ; It's All Over Now [7:15] ; Brown Eyed Women [3:00#] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:31] ; Friend Of The Devil [8:47] ; Lazy Lightnin' [3:31] > Supplication [6:06] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012122.mp3 Thank you for your kind support!

We head into the new year with a show from the Winter of 1979 - this comes to us from the Nassau Coliseum on January 11, 1979. The first set starts off with a wonderful version of 'Sugaree' - Garcia sets the tone for this set right out of the gate.. some wonderful runs here. 'Me & My Uncle' and 'Big River' follows and the latter, in particular, delivers more Jerry magic. Things slow down a bit with a long 'Peggy-O', and Bobby does a nice 'Cassidy' to follow. 'Friend of the Devil' and the 'New New Minglewood Blues follow'. Donna does a rare version of 'From the Heart of Me', before they break into the crowd favorite 'Ramble on Rose'. The highlight of the set, in my mind, follows with a smoking version of 'Jack Straw'. Despite Weir stepping on Garcia's incredible solo, this one is sure to please. Jerry heads into the break delivering a rocking 'Deal'. Grateful Dead Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale, NY 1/11/79 - Thursday One Sugaree [13:50] ; Me And My Uncle [2:54] > Big River [6:20] ; Peggy-O [8:59] ; Cassidy [4:58] ; Friend Of The Devil [9:50] ; New Minglewood Blues [5:35] ; From The Heart Of Me [3:50] ; Ramble On Rose [8:01] ; Jack Straw [6:12] > Deal [6:13] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod010722.mp3 check out Bobby's ad libbed lyrics in 'Jack Straw'... This week's Deadpod features a wonderful recording of the band's performance in Paris France on September 20, 1974. This is a splendid recording, and a very interesting performance. The band opens with a spirited 'Cumberland Blues' followed by a nice 'Jack Straw'. The first-set 'Scarlet Begonias' features some very nice Phil leads. Bobby's vocals are top-notch on the 'Black Throated Wind' that follows. The 'Friend of the Devil' that is performed afterwards, is one of the last 'fast' versions the band played. We get to hear a full 'Weather Report Suite' highlighted by some nice keyboard work by Keith. Jerry follows with a soulful 'Stella Blue'. The 'Around and Around that closes the set has a unique feel to it.. The myth of the outlaw has informed many of the great songs in music. From folk and blues, to country and rock, to reggae and rap, bad men and bandits have endured. A Friend of the Devil tracks the true story of these legendary bandits behind the songs that deify them, while looking at society's role in both creating outlaws, and our perpetual need for a new hero.John Kruth talks us about why we have continued to romanticize criminals in song, raising them to heroic figures. We'll go behind such legendary songs — and characters — by Townes Van Zandt, the Grateful Dead, Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley, Warren Zevon and many others, whose hits idolized the outlaw and its myth.AllMusicPodcasts is a proud member of the Pantheon Media Network.

An early April Fool's present for my Deadpod friends this week. This show, from April 1st, 1984 is much better to my ears than it appears on paper (and the second set, scheduled for next week, is even better). This show was the last show of the first Rex Foundation runs, so it was held in the very small Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Personally I enjoy hearing Brent so upfront in the mix. The other general point that stands out to me is that Garcia is out front and outstanding on most of these songs. Jack Straw, big Railroad Blues, and Tennessee Jed are outstanding. Grateful Dead Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium San Rafael, CA 4/1/84 - Sunday One Jack Straw [5:48] ; Friend Of The Devil [8:30] ; Me And My Uncle [3:14] > Mexicali Blues [4:51] ; Big Railroad Blues [5:33] ; Cassidy [5:15] ; Tennessee Jed [#7:33] ; My Brother Esau [4:30] > Don't Ease Me In [3:12] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod033117.mp3 Heartfelt thanks to the kind listeners whose support of the Deadpod makes our weekly podcast possible. :)
Merry Christmas .. Happy Hanukkah This year's holiday edition of the Deadpod features one of the best acoustic performances of 1970. This takes place at the Fillmore East in New York City on September 20th, 1970. The acoustic set, which we present today, is not only a fine performance but also a fine recording. David Grisman plays mandolin on 'Friend of the Devil' and David Nelson joins with another mandolin on a slow soulful, 'Big Railroad Blues', both continue through Ripple. There is some speculation that Jerry plays piano on 'To Lay Me Down', clearly a wonderful highlight here. Nelson and Grisman are back with mandolins on a fine Rosalie McFall, following a rare acoustic 'Truckin'. I love 'Cumberland Blues' here.. but then again I usually love this song.. Jerry plays an electic during 'New Speedway' but the vibe is very acoustic. 'Brokedown Palace' provides a fitting conclusion to the set.. Following, I decided to feature one more cut from Holly Bowling's beautiful work 'Better Left Unsung'.. this is 'Eyes of the World (Louieville KY 61874).. it speaks for itself.. By the looks of textbooks across the land, Science is a friend of the Devil. By the looks of the Police State across the land, our Citizens are a friend of the Devil. Most of All, from the looks of Electoral Politics in out Uniparty System? The main Devil you have to befriend is Israel. All this, and WWL's official endorsement of Jill Stein, who is a friend to us all.
