More than usual, I'm popping my p's and otherwise hitting plosives. That's because something weird is happening with my recording set-up that I can't hear proper gain on my voice when I'm recording. If I can't hear them when I'm narrating a script, then they end up in the final mix because there's no choice.I'll figure it out, but I left it in for this one because this may have been one of the hardest audio editions to have done for a while. I barely took a breather in January and sometimes when I do too much work I don't process all of the stories properly.So yesterday I took off from writing new stories to get caught up with what I've already done. I usually do this work on Saturdays but I wanted to look at the General Assembly. This particular audio version also includes brand new interstitials. Those are the bits of sound in between the audio segments. One of the original ideas was that I would continue to make new ones but I've been using the same 20 stings over and over. So, today I made an effort to make new ones from existing weird things I've made over the years.Speaking of which, I've had an idea. In the coming weeks I'll be announcing a new way people can support my work, and that also involves changing the Patreon away from reporting and to something more artistic and creative. Probably not at all even close to the mainstream and it may not work, but I don't want to close the account.In any case, there may or may not be a regular newsletter today. Happy Halloween!! In honor of the fact that this week's Deadpod falls on Halloween, I decided to go back and find an appropriate show that the band played on this date... I think this one from 1969 is certainly worthy of a listen.. The show starts out with a truly nasty recording of Casey Jones - I left it in for the sake of completeness, but I hope you will stick with it as the recording greatly improves after that. There is a fair bit of hiss throughout but nevertheless this is a wonderful artifact of the young Grateful Dead.. The Cryptical>Drums>OtherOne>Cryptical has a wild drum segment that is great fun, and the China>Rider has a very nice transition jam between them. The second set highlights include a Pigpen taking over at the end here, with the last three songs showcasing his blues delivery. This week we join the Dead as they play the last show of a 3 show run in Texas during October 1977. This one takes place on the campus of SMU in Dallas Texas on October 15.  The first set opens with a spirited 'Bertha' into 'Good Lovin'. They move into a more laid back mood with 'They Love Each Other' then the 'Mama Tried' into 'Big River' ramps things bck up. A nice 'Ramble on Rose' is marred here with a nasty cut..sorry about that. Sometimes the image of a perfect dog doesn't synch up with the reality of the dog you end up with. This was the case with this week's guest, Stephen Hunking of the band Dew Claw, whose "beautiful mess of a rescue dog" Mouse wasn't the dog he imagined adopting but soon became the dog he couldn't do without. It's a great story about providing a dog the compassion, patience and space to allow them to come into their own. Dew Claw's latest album E.L.F., featuring the song Rescue Dog, is out now. She goes after her but Frankie doesn't wanna talk. The next day, Mae shows up to comfort her. Shawna stops by and agrees to go by Mr. Chicken to spy on Frank Jr. At Mr Chicken, his boss comes by and is disappointed to see Frank Jr is showing emotions. Gus calls Amanda to check on her like a real mom would. After that, Frankie comes down and yells at her mom and storms out. Sabrina finds out that Mae's wedding is barely planned and Sabrina can't believe it. Mae never thought she'd get married. So Sabrina agrees to help her out. Nancy goes to talk to Pastor boyfriend and he tells her he doesn't think her not telling about the kiss she saw was wrong. He also has something to ask her and Mae says she doesn't think she can get married right now. He says I was just gonna ask you to go in a trip with me. After realizing she has all the help she needs, she says yes. Frank Jr sees Sergio and gives him a piece of his mind. Sergio says he made a mistake and he's not proud of it. Shawna shows up and Gus tells her that people keep calling and asking for a caesar salad. Shawna explain she's gone viral for a video of her saying “if I wanna be famous, I'd cut my hair and start eating caeser salad”. Gus doesn't understand why it's funny and feels like people are making fun of her and that makes her sad. Frank Jr walks into Amanda and says that he knows he's not the perfect person but he didn't deserve that. Amanda says she's sorry. Frank Jr says don't hold your breath for those divorce papers. Shawna tells Gus she knows what to do about the salad thing. Gus says she's go for it. Frank Jr finds his mom Nancy and tells her off.Back at home, Gus comforts her while wearing a dress. Shawna tells them it's for the gram. Turns out, the idea is just to have her eat a salad. Sergio gets a text from “do not answer” and goes to talk. Amanda tracks her daughter down and tries to tell her she can't skip school cuz she's embarrassed and Frankie point out that she's dressed like she's in witness protection. Nancy goes to apologize to Frank Jr and says she's willing to forgive him for all the rotten things he's done if he forgives her. He says I'm sorry….I'm not ready….and then goes into his apartment to eat some Chicken Sisters chicken. Frankie and Amanda have a heart to heart and it's real good. The episode stops with a hunk of a man walking in. His name is Clayton, he was the star QB, he's Mae's dad and he calls Gus “Gussy”.

This week we continue with the second set from the Grateful Dead's final show at the Fillmore West on July 2, 1971 This starts out with an unusual 'Sugar Magnolia' opener, going into a sweet 'Sing Me Back Home'.. after a short "Mama Tried' we are thrown into a whirlwind with a great 'Cryptical>Drums>Other One', with the Other One being dedicated to Owsley who was incarcerated at the time.. while this is perhaps the highlight of this set, the closing 'Not Fade Away>Going Down the Road>Not Fade Away' shows the band at their rocking best. This week's Deadpod takes us back to the Fall tour of 1979 - this time at San Diego for the Saturday night show that took place on November 24. This first set opens with a rare and refreshing 'China Cat>I Know You Rider'. Love hearing this as an opener and I think it sets a nice atmosphere for the show. Cowboy songs come next then a really nice 'Peggy-O' and 'Cassidy' which are both highlights of this set.  A youthful sounding Brent gives us a nice 'Easy To Love You' which goes into a longer 'Althea'.   This week's Deadpod features a historic performance - it occurred on the night the band was 'busted down in New Orleans' - January 30, 1970 at The Warehouse in New Orleans, Louisiana. Also historic as it was the last show that Tom Constantin played in the Dead.. but aside from that this is a fine show and I think you'll enjoy hearing this very good tape..  The tape is missing part of the opening Casey Jones, nevertheless good vibes here and on the following 'Me & My Uncle'.. 'Black Peter' is wonderful.. I also think the 'High Time in this set is absolutely perfect. Dear Diary (& Listeners), I am stressed this week.  I have so many things going at once.  The holidays crept up and I feel like I am burning the candle at both ends.  I've found myself in a strange lull because of the holidays. Everywhere I look someone is experiencing joy and new beginnings.  I held space for myself for a moment, but didn't let it get the best of me. This week the Deadpod travels to the East Coast for a show that took place around 2 months after last week's show. This is the early show from the Fillmore East in NYC on January 2, 1970. This is quite a nice tape, don't let the few seconds at the beginning fool you.  The 'Mason's Children' opener is a good representation of this somewhat odd song. 'Black Peter' is quite extended, much more than usual for this song. 'Hard to Handle' is explosive as usual. The boys really hit their stride here with the 'Cryptical Envelopment>Drums>Other One'.
