POPULARITY
This week on the Deadpod we have another monumental set from the seminal year of 1974. This week of course from the show in Springfield MA, on June 30, 1974. Following Seastones, the boys came out with a fine 'China>Rider' a combo often used to good effect as a second set opener. The transition is quite fine. 'Big River' follows and shows the spark it had which made it an excellent second set tune. A stand-alone 'Scarlet Begonias' lets Jerry stretch out a bit next. The meat of this set however is the 'Truckin'>Eyes>Stella Blue'.. as always during this period 'Truckin' lets the boys take things to unexplored dimensions, but the 'Eyes' here is perhaps my favorite. 'Stella Blue' is sung very well also. A strong trifecta of 'Not Fade Away>Goin' Down the Road>One More Saturday Night' closes the set, which even without an encore comes in at just slightly less than two hours. Grateful Dead Springfield Civic Center Arena Springfield, MA 6/30/74 - Sunday Three China Cat Sunflower [11:12] > I Know You Rider [5:12] ; Big River [5:00] ; Scarlet Begonias [7:52] ; El Paso [4:06] ; U.S. Blues [5:35] > Truckin' [13:22] > Nobody's Fault But Mine Jam > Eyes Of The World [23:47] > Stella Blue [7:15] ; Not Fade Away [10:24] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:34] > One More Saturday Night [4:56] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod062620.mp3 Thank you for your kind support of the Deadpod! 'I want to tell you how it's gonna be.....' and let me tell you this second set from November 24, 1972 in Dallas Texas is one rockin' hour + of fine Grateful Dead music. Unlike most of their four other Texas shows during this leg of the fall '72 tour there is no 'Dark Star' or 'Other One' here.. and this second set is notable for being fairly straight-ahead rock and roll. The show really gets moving with a fantastic 'Truckin' .. Jerrry really takes off here, Sugar Magnolia is no slouch either but the uniqueness of this one comes in the fine 'Not Fade Away>Going' Down the Road>Not Fade Away'. Despite Jerry breaking a string, I'm certain you'll enjoy the unique take on this combo here. Not for the faint of heart ;) Grateful Dead Dallas Memorial Auditorium Dallas, TX 11/24/72 - Friday Two China Cat Sunflower [5:#25] > I Know You Rider [4:42] ; Box Of Rain [4:40] ; Truckin' [12:24] ; Ramble On Rose [6:02] ; Big River [4:13] ; Casey Jones [6:16] ; Sugar Magnolia [8:32] ; Not Fade Away [8:58] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:31] > Not Fade Away [5:13] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod110819.mp3 Thank you for your support of the Deadpod!
This week's Deadpod is the result of a request from a longtime listener/supporter of the show. It comes to us from early in 1972, March 5th, 1972, only the second show of that legendary year, and the last time that Pigpen played with the band in San Francisco. This show was a benefit for the American Indains, and the Dead were the third band on the agenda. It turns out that they were pressed for time a bit by the 2 AM curfew, and so the second set was a bit abbreviated and rushed. I've only presented here the songs that survive in soundboard format, and while there are several patches and glitches here the exuberance and magic of the performance won me over and I think it will you as well. The jamming, especially Garcia of course, comes at you in staccato bursts, in songs like Mexicali Blues and El Paso. The highlight of the show of course, is Pigpen's 'Good Lovin'. It is here, around the 6:40 mark, that some report the first occurance of the legendary 'mind left body' jam. I find the entire performance to be uptempo.. it makes me smile.. I hope you do too. Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 3/5/72 - Sunday One (first 6 songs missing) Tennessee Jed [6:50] Jack Straw [4:52] China Cat Sunflower [#5:48] > I Know You Rider [4:#55] Mexicali Blues [3:32] You Win Again [349] El Paso [#4:18] Casey Jones [#5:57] Two Good Lovin' [16:24] Not Fade Away [3:20] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:08] > Not Fade Away [3:10] Encore One More Saturday Night [#4:29] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod092818.mp3 keep the faith..
This week's Deadpod features the 2nd set from the performance on September 19th, 1990 at Madison Square Garden in New York. This is one of the better latter day Dead shows. Bruce brings a spark to Jerry, and the boys are jamming full blast here. The jam out of the great Let it Grow with Bob, Bruce and Jerry is outstanding! But don't overlook the fine Goin' Down the Road.. Stella Blue as always, pulls on the heartstrings.. Grateful Dead Madison Square Garden New York , NY 9/19/90 - Wednesday Two - [1:46:11] Playing In The Band [10:31] > Ship Of Fools [6:33] > Playing Jam [2:33] > Uncle John's Band [10:41] > Let It Grow [11:43] > Jam [9:55] > Space [2:17] > Drums [9:52] > Space [9:28] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:34] > Stella Blue [10:29] > Around And Around [8:18] Encore The Mighty Quinn (Quinn The Eskimo) [4:47] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod092118.mp3 As Summer slips away, my thanks to all of you who listen each week, and a special thanks to the kind folks whose contributions make the Deadpod possible..
This week another super long set from 1974 - this of course is the second set from August 6th, 1974 at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City New Jersey. What a way to start - a wonderful 'Uncle John's Band' with a great jammy intro.. other great highlights from this set include a personal favorite - a nice 'Black Peter', an excellent 'Loose Lucy' and 'Ship Of Fools' - a bit more uptempo which I think suits the song well. Again here in this set you'll see no dedicated 'drums->space' segment, but there is plenty of jamming here, especially in the long closing segment which features 'Sugar Mag' into 'He's Gone', a long jammed out 'Truckin' (where Bobby fugs up the lyrics :) then a nice 'Spanish Jam' into an unusual 'Other One' jam.. they go out with a nice 'Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad' and top off the sandwich with 'Sunshine Daydream'. US Blues follows as the encore of a most wonderful show. Grateful Dead Roosevelt Stadium Jersey City, NJ 8/6/74 - Tuesday Two Uncle John's Band [10:25] ; El Paso [4:09] ; Black Peter [10:20] ; Loose Lucy [4:58] ; Big River [4:43] ; Ship Of Fools [6:24] ; Me And My Uncle [2:43] ; Row Jimmy [8:05] ; Sugar Magnolia [6:34] > He's Gone [11:#21] > Truckin' [16:19] > Spanish Jam > The Other One [12:08] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [5:38] > Sunshine Daydream [2:22] Encore U.S. Blues [5:36] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod081718.mp3 hope this fine set of magic helps you hang onto summer just a little bit longer.... thanks so much for your kind support of the Deadpod!
Happy Summer everyone! This second set from May 11th, 1980 is really a classic set list with a powerhouse pre-drums set and a rare set-closing Johnny B. Goode.. I would've loved to have seen this one! Bet the place was rockin' after the Black Peter as well! Another example of 'never miss a Sunday show'! Grateful Dead Cumberland County Civic Center Portland, ME 5/11/80 - Sunday Two Scarlet Begonias [6:42] > Fire On The Mountain [8:19] ; Feel Like A Stranger [7:31] > Terrapin Station [11:53] > Playing In The Band [8:51] > Drums [5:#31] > Space [2:17] > Black Peter [8:59] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:02] > Around And Around [3:50] > Johnny B. Hope to see some of you up at Alpine this weekend..
We open the month of May here on the Deadpod with a great second set from 1977, as we continue our presentation of April 23rd, 1977 at the Springfield Civic Center Arena in Springfield MA. This set starts with the famous 'take a step back' exhortation to the crowd, but the band fires things up most excellently with a very tight 'Estimated Prophet'. Not only are the harmonies great here but Jerry has that twangy 77 sound that makes this one so sweet. Bertha follows, more melodic than rockin' here.. The familiar bass line of 'The Music Never Stops' follows, as the band high step into this favorite. Jerry really gets cranking here, even though the jam won't go on as long as we might like. The Help>Slip>Frank that follows is for my money clearly the highlight here. Such a joy to listen to.. I find myself wishing that Slipknot! could go on and on.. but then I'd miss Jerry's mindbending solos during Franklin's :) They close the second set with a great trifecta; 'Around and Around'>'Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad'>'Not Fade Away'. Nothin' left to do.. :) Grateful Dead Springfield Civic Center Arena Springfield, MA 4/23/77 - Saturday Two Estimated Prophet [7:34] ; Bertha [7:03] ; The Music Never Stopped [5:59] ; Help On The Way [4:25] > Slipknot! [8:53] > Franklin's Tower [10:24] > Around And Around [6:49] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [8:49] > Not Fade Away [11:14] Encore One More Saturday Night [4:40] you can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod050418.mp3 Thank you for your kind support of the Deadpod!
Hello Friends! I have to tell you, the ol' Professor has not had a great week.. been down with an awful case of the flu since last saturday night, which forced me to cancel a trip I had planned to the great Southwest :( However my week was brightened by a very sweet note and donation from Stephen and Kristi of New York City (who are dealing with their own nasty weather problems this week). Thanks my friends. I'm still running a fever and dealing with some nasty abdominal stuff so I'm afraid I'm going to make this introduction to this week's Deadpod short and sweet.. The first half of this second set is wonderful.. It's always a joy to hear Pig sing 'The Stranger' and the boys are really moving this one down the track so buckle up and enjoy the ride. Grateful Dead Academy of Music New York, NY 3/21/72 - Tuesday Two Intro [1:11] (1) ; Truckin' > [10:28] > Drums [3:22] > The Other One [17:48] > Wharf Rat (2) [10:14];[1:21] ; Sugar Magnolia [7:00];[2:24] ; The Stranger (Two Souls In Communion) (3) [6:43];[0:30] Ramble On Rose [6:01];[0:43] ; Me And My Uncle [3:06];[0:28] ; Big Railroad Blues [3:58];[1:04] ; Not Fade Away [3:55] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [5:44] > One More Saturday Night (4) [4:50] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod032318.mp3 We will survive...
We usher in the New Year with a long, fantastic second set from the Dead's performance on 12/30/78 at the Pauley Pavilion in UCLA, Los Angeles, CA. The bands opens with a trifecta of rock and roll - 'I Need a Miracle' (check out Weir's shouting here) into 'Bertha' into 'Good Lovin'. This leads into a fantastic, long Scarlet > Fire (almost 18 minutes). You might think they'd head into Drums and Space but no, tonight we get both a 'Playin' in the Band' AND a 'Shakedown Street' pre-Drums. This Drums is no slouch.. and leads into Hamza el-Din joining the band for 'Ollin Arrageed'. Jerry rather flubs the intro to the first 'St. Stephen' since January 78, but still great to hear, as is the 'Not Fade Away'>Goin' Down the Road'>'Around and Around' which closes this excellent set. They return for the obligatory 'One More Saturday Night' encore capping off almost a 2 hour set. Grateful Dead Pauley Pavilion - University of California Los Angeles, CA 12/30/78 - Saturday Two I Need A Miracle [4:12] > Bertha [6:34] > Good Lovin' [7:02] ; Scarlet Begonias [9:31] > Fire On The Mountain [9:34] ; Playing In The Band [7:54] > Shakedown Street [8:57] > Drums [10:46] > Ollin Arrageed (1) [14:03] > Space [2:06] > Saint Stephen [8:03] > Not Fade Away [7:35] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [6:39] > Around And Around [9:08] Encore One More Saturday Night [4:34] comments (1) with Hamza el-Din You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod010518.mp3 Hope you are staying warm this chilly New Year!!! This week's Deadpod features a one-set wonder (as it is only the 2nd set that we have a soundboard tape of) of a superb show from December 1st, 1971 from the Boston Music Hall in Boston MA. This is a beautiful recording of the young Dead and I'm quite certain you'll enjoy both the stand alone songs and the insane jamming of 'The Other One'. The ending 'Not Fade Away'>Going Down the Road Feelin' Bad'>'Not Fade Away' is wonderful as well. Grateful Dead Boston Music Hall Boston, MA 12/1/71 - Wednesday Two Ramble On Rose ; Me And Bobby McGee ; Big Boss Man [4:44] ; Cryptical Envelopment [1:47] > Drums [2:33] > The Other One (1) [14:08] > Me And My Uncle [2:01] > The Other One (2) [8:51] ; Not Fade Away [3:57] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [5:53] > Not Fade Away [2:40] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod121517.mp3 My heartfelt thanks to the kind friends whose contributions allow me to produce the Deadpod.
This week we hear the conclusion of this great, fresh sounding show from April 14th, 1971 at Bucknell University. This set starts with a great and somewhat longish for the period, Bird Song, and just keeps getting better.. with a unique Sugar Magnolia, a psychedelic Crypical, and the Pig on 'Hard To Handle'. The closing jam on 'Not Fade Away'-> 'Goin' Down the Road'->'Not Fade Away' is great and they come back for a nice 'Uncle John's Band' encore. Hope you enjoy this dose of early, Good 'Ol Grateful Dead! Grateful Dead Davis Gym - Bucknell University Lewisburg, PA 4/14/71 - Wednesday Two Bird Song ; Sugar Magnolia ; Cryptical Envelopment > Drums > The Other One > Wharf Rat ; Hard To Handle ; Not Fade Away > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad > Not Fade Away > Johnny B. Goode Encore Uncle John's Band http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod111717.mp3 My thanks for your support of the Deadpod! check out our page on Facebook! requests are always welcomed.
Here is the second set from the band's performance on July 25th, 1972 at the Paramount Theater in Portland Oregon. I think its a great performance to hear during these 'Days Between' as it showcases the band at one of the peak times of their career. Check out the rousing 'Greatest Story Ever Told' and the unusually languid 'China Cat->I Know You Rider' that follows. The Other One and the jams around it are the stars here however. I'm happy that this one includes a fine 'Wharf Rat'.. while the ballads during this period didn't match the intensity of the later years, it still holds a special place when I'm thinking about Jer. Grateful Dead Paramount Theatre Portland, OR 7/25/72 - Tuesday Two He's Gone [8:46] ; Greatest Story Ever Told [5:15] (6) ; China Cat Sunflower [6:38] > I Know You Rider [4:55] (7) ; Mexicali Blues [3:25] ; (8) Truckin' [11:58] > The Other One Jam [1:12] > Drums [3:02] > The Other One [27:11] > Wharf Rat [10:56] (9) ; Sugar Magnolia ; Sing Me Back Home [9:34] ; Not Fade Away [5:31] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:22] > Not Fade Away [3:02] (10) You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod080417.mp3 Love is Real, Not Fade Away thanks Jerry

The tempo, as in much of this period is more controlled and a little slower.. but everyone is blending in and doing a great job. They open with a nice 'Might As Well' (not yet over played :), then follow with Samson and Delilah. A terrific High Time follows - a song we don't get to hear very often. Let It Grow follows, split by a short drum segment, then a rocking Dancin' in The Streets. A real Cosmic Charlie follows, again, with a slower tempo, then the band gets everyone moving with Around and Around, Goin' Down the Road, and since it was Saturday, One More Saturday Night. They return with a great Not Fade Away encore, not the usual choice for that slot. Grateful Dead Capitol Theatre Passaic, NJ 6/19/76 - Saturday Two Might As Well [5:44];[1:28] ; Samson And Delilah [6:17];[1:36] ; High Time [9:17];[1:38] (1) ; Let It Grow [6:04] > Drums [3:24] > Let It Grow [3:03] % Dancing In The Street [10:05] > Drums [0:11] > Cosmic Charlie [7:58];[3:32] (1) ; Around And Around [6:22] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:06] > One More Saturday Night [4:16] Encore Not Fade Away You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod060917.mp3 I surely hope that this finds you well and enjoying a beautiful Summer. Thanks for listening and for your support.Â
This week we continue with the second set of the Grateful Dead's performance on April 21st, 1971 at the Rhode Island Auditorium in Providence Rhode Island. This is one of those rare shows where the 2nd set is probably shorter than the first set, but it still contains some excellent music. Clearly the highlight of this set is the almost 15 minute long 'Good Lovin'' featuring some classic Pigpen don't overlook the Not Fade Away->Goin' Down the Road->Not Fade Away trifecta that closes the set. They return for a sweet double encore of 'Uncle John's Band' and 'Johnny B. Goode'. Grateful Dead Rhode Island Auditorium Providence, RI 4/21/71 - Wednesday Two Bertha [5:27] ; Sugar Magnolia [5:51] ; Good Lovin' [14:46] > Not Fade Away [4:00] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:05] > Not Fade Away [2:31] Encore Uncle John's Band [5:41] > Johnny B. This week's Deadpod features the second set from the band's performance at a Rex Foundation benefit on April 1st, 1984. There's lots of Garcia to love here, from the Help->Slip-Frank, through Terrapin and Morning Dew.. We even have a Touch of Grey encore.. really this one is a 'greatest hits' set list, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.. A quintessential 1972 Grateful Dead second set is on the docket for this week's Deadpod. This set from July 26th, 1972, at Portland's Paramont Theater clocks in at a little over two hours.. It features a number of wonderful highlights, including one of the last performances of 'You Win Again', and early 'He's Gone', and to top it all off, a 30 minute+ Dark Star. While this Dark Star is clearly the highlight of the set, there are stunning performances throughout - capped off by a smoking hot 'Not Fade Away->Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad->Not Fade Away'.. don't miss it!! Grateful Dead Paramount Theatre Portland, OR 7/26/72 - Wednesday Set Two The Promised Land [2;58] (4) ; He's Gone [8:46] ; Me And My Uncle [3:05] ; You Win Again [4:02] ; Greatest Story Ever Told [4:57] ; Ramble On Rose [6:09] ; Dark Star [31:13] (5) > Comes A Time [7:03] ; Sugar Magnolia [7:56] ; Brown Eyed Women [3#:38] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:06] ; Stella Blue [8:06] ; Not Fade Away [5:15] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [8:20] > Not Fade Away [3:22] Encore One More Saturday Night [5:32] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod072916.mp3 As summer flies by and we roll into the Days Between, I want to thank the kind folks who have chosen to support the Deadpod. I deeply appreciate it. 'Without Love in the Dream it will never come true'.
Friday the 13th finds us featuring the second set from the band's performance 30 years ago at Cal Expo on May 3rd, 1986. A nice bouncy Scarlet starts us off, with some pleasing trills from Brent (if you enjoy his additions).. the transition into Fire is one of the highlights of the set.. quite unusual.. Jerry gives a great reading of 'Fire on the Mountain', his voice in relatively good condition, just a bit strained.. They follow with 'Man Smart, Women Smarter'.. which always got the crowd up on their feet then an unusually placed 'Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad' leads us into Drums.. Long and quite interesting I think you'll enjoy the energy here. they glide into 'The Other One' out of Space.. at times I wonder if they will find the 'one' but they do..and times I wonder where Garcia has gone.. . This leads into a slow and introspective 'Comes A Time'.. Jerry sounds quite nice here.. they follow with a set, and show closing, Sugar Magnolia.. it ends with some wierd Healy effects and an announcement about broken guitars and frozen fingers and no encore tonight.... given what happens to Jerry in a cou ple months (his diabetic coma) we have to wonder if this was a foreshadowing.. Nevertheless this is quite good for the time period and I sure hope you enjoy it! Grateful Dead Cal Expo Amphitheatre Sacramento, CA 5/3/86 - Saturday Two Scarlet Begonias [9:40] > Fire On The Mountain [9:46] ; Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [7:18] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [6:17] > Jam [0:57] > Drums [4:48#] > Space [7:14] > The Other One [7:53] > Comes A Time [7:52] > Sugar Magnolia [9:44] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod051316.mp3 My sincere thanks to the kind folks whose contributions keep the Deadpod in existence. This sweet second set from 1973 will close out the month of February 2016 for the Deadpod. Judging from the length of this set I assume this is really not the entire set, however what we have is very pleasing indeed.. Starting off with an early 'Wave That Flag' the boys move through a 'Me and My Uncle' into a well-played if short for the period 'Dark Star'. That moves into an exceptional 'Eyes of the World' .. while not unusual for the period the music excellence here makes me happy every time I hear it. China Doll follows.. enough said. The boys rock it out following that with an Around and Around, Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad and One More Saturday Night before returning for a Casey Jones encore.. Great sounding Dead here.. Grateful Dead Assembly Hall - University Of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, IL 2/22/73 - Thursday Two Wave That Flag [5:40] % Me And My Uncle [2:41] % Dark Star [14:38] > Eyes Of The World [15:42] > China Doll [6:36];[0:16] ; Around And Around [4:34];[0:17] % Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:44] > One More Saturday Night [4:20] Encore Casey Jones [6:06] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod022616.mp3 Special thanks to the wonderful folks whose donations keep the Deadpod afloat. Happy Valentines' Day Weekend! This week's second set from Lake Placid New York, October 17th, 1983 should bring a warm smile to any lover's heart as it contains a really wonderful 'To Lay Me Down'.. one of the most romantic of all Garcia's songs. Of course I don't want to minimize the enjoyment the remainder of this set will bring you. They start off with 'Touch', then move into 'Samson and Delilah'.. then the aforesaid 'To Lay Me Down' starts a nice combination as it rolls into 'Man Smart (Woman Smarter)' and Terrapin Station pre-Drums. Following Space, we get a fine version of 'The Wheel', a rocking 'Miracle' then they 'Go Down the Road Feelin' Bad' into a set-closing 'Good Lovin' That one features some interesting improvisation by Bobby.. listen for it.. They return for an unusual 'Revolution' encore to finish their one and only trip to the Olympic Arena in Lake Placid.. Grateful Dead Olympic Arena Lake Placid, NY 10/17/83 - Monday Two Touch Of Grey [6:24] ; Samson And Delilah [8:48] ; To Lay Me Down [8:55] > Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [7:05] ; Terrapin Station [11:20#] > Drums > Space [11:05] > The Wheel [6:49] > I Need A Miracle [4:32] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:05] > Good Lovin' [7:38] Encore Revolution [5:08] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod021216.mp3 The Deadpod is made possible through the kind support of my listeners. thank you! It just wouldn't be right if I didn't feature a NYE show on this date, and while many of the shows that the band played on New Years Eve were a bit of a letdown, I think I've chosen one that wasn't.. this comes to us from New Years Eve 1981. While the boys opened with an acoustic set with Joan Baez, I had to spare you that and omit it from this podcast. I did not however, omit anything else - over three and a half hours of great Dead awaits you in this special New Years' podcast. All three sets including a wonderful Shakedown Street opener, an unusual Iko,Iko to ring in the New Year, Terrapin Station, a fabulous Morning Dew which closes set 2, and an excellent Dark Star to open set 3. I hope you have plenty of time to savor this Deadpod over the holiday weekend, and I sure hope you enjoy it! This week we have some great fun from the second set of the Dead's performance at the Milkweg in Amsterdam, Netherlands back on October 16th, 1981. This week we get to hear the electric set of this impromptu performance, when the band played on borrowed instruments in a club environment. This set is very much a Bobby dominated set, with the boys opening with a nice Playin' in the Band. Then they pull out 'Hully Gully' for the one and only time they ever played it.. this goes into the Wheel, then Bobby takes over for a Samson and Delilah. This then goes into Gloria, and then, for the first time in over 10 years, Bobby leads the boys into a Lovelight. From there they seque into Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad before returning to Playin' In the Band. A nice long Black Peter follows, then the boys end the evening with a spirited Sugar Magnolia.. No encore, but from everything I've read, none was needed. A special evening from all accounts. Grateful Dead Melkweg Amsterdam, Netherlands 10/16/81 - Friday Two Playing In The Band [11:28] > Hully Gully [3:22] > The Wheel [6:06] > Samson And Delilah [7:00] ; Gloria [7:37] > Turn On Your Love Light [6:09] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [5:35] > Playing In The Band [4:00] > Black Peter [9:28] > Sugar Magnolia [9:13] you can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120415.mp3 Thanks to everyone who entered the Fare Thee Well giveaway! I'll be getting those out to the winners, I only wish I had more copies to send!! Remember you can pick up these special sets at www.dead.net Thanks so much to all of you who have chosen to support the Deadpod. I so very much appreciate the help! Remember to keep that love light on..
This week we return to the Berkley Community Theater for the second set of the band's performance back on August 14th, 1971. The tape cuts into Truckin' in progress, luckily however the excellent jam that ends the song is preserved.. from there we go into an early set Drums, and then, suddenly if not unexpectedly, the bombs drop signalling a truly great Other One to follow. Phil really shines on this one, and it leads to a truly psychedelic jam following the first verses. There are some great themes here... see what you can identify! The band flows back into the Other One which really was a signature jam in these days. Following a lengthy tune up Bobby goes into a nice version of 'Me & Bobby McGee'.. The Sugar Magnolia that follows really pops.. they really get cooking here, eventually the move into a smoldering 'Not Fade Away'-> 'Goin' Down The Road'->'Not Fade Away'.. The boys eventually return for an excellent double encore of 'Johnny B Goode' and 'Uncle John's Band'.... I think this one surely stands out as one of the best shows of a most excellent year. Berkeley Community Theatre Berkeley, CA 8/14/71 - Saturday Two: Truckin' [3:#56] > Drums [3:35] > The Other One (1) [16:40] ; Me And Bobby McGee [5:39] ; Sugar Magnolia (2) [5:45] ; Not Fade Away [5:27] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [10:47] > Not Fade Away [3:14] Encores: Johnny B. Goode [3:30] ; Uncle John's Band [6:06] CommentsHappy Birthday for David Crosby before Johnny B. Goode. You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod091815.mp3 I also have a CONTEST of sorts to announce! I've received two copies of the CD 'The Best of the Grateful Dead'.. here's some info from the Dead.net website about this CD: THE BEST OF THE GRATEFUL DEAD’s 32 tracks feature music from every Grateful Dead studio album and cover the key waypoints on the band’s mystical musical journey. Arranged chronologically, the tracks reflect the evolution of the group’s sound – and its membership – across more than two decades – from 1967’s “The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)” to 1989’s “Standing on the Moon.” In between, listeners will find the essential tracks that made the band such a cultural phenomenon, including such fan favorites as “St. Stephen,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Friend of the Devil,” “Scarlet Begonias,” and “Hell In a Bucket.” In addition .. I have ONE copy of the newly released 4 CD set culled from the *80* disk 30 Trips arond the Sun: this set features one cut from each of the 30 years of the band's touring history.. I usually offer these kinds of promotional disks as an incentive to make a donation to the Deadpod.. but since I only have 3 of these to offer, I'll be glad to send them out to three lucky folks who submit an entry today, Friday September 18th (the release date for the 30 trips around the Sun 3 cd set) to my email address: j.henrikson @gmail com,.. with '30 Trips' as the subject .. Be sure and include your US mailing address so I can send it to you if you win!! Of course I'd be glad to get a few donations too!!! Thanks for your support.. be kind to everyone!
This week's Deadpod features the second set from the Band's performance on March 18th, 1971 at the Fox Theater in St. Louis Missouri. This is clearly a great performance from a great year. Starting with the Other One the band really delivers a great performance. Jerry does a great version of Wharf Rat here and the band displays how it can turn on a dime with Billy as the solo drummer in the transitions, especially from Greatest Story into Johnny B. Goode. The highlight of this set might have to be Pigpen on the Caution - this is a great version.. Grateful Dead Fox Theatre St. Louis, MO 3/18/71 - Thursday Set 2 Truckin' [#6:41] > The Other One [0:17] > Drums [5:53] > The Other One [12:#05] > Wharf Rat [11:50] ; Sugar Magnolia [6:13] ; Greatest Story Ever Told > Johnny B. We could always use some support so I hope that you might consider making a donation if you can... thanks............
A classic second set from the great year of 1971 on this week's Deadpod. This one features a massive Other One, an early look at Keith who was playing with the boys without Pigpen on this night and a very well played Goin' Down the Road Feelin Bad->NFA->GDTRFB sandwich.. definitely a favorite! Phil is all over this massive Other One as well, and I think this is a good choice to warm those bone on a cold Winter's eve... Grateful Dead Allen Theatre Cleveland, OH 10/29/71 - Friday Two - [66:24] [66:24] ; Cryptical Envelopment [1:51] > Drums [0:23] > The Other One [20:16] > Me And My Uncle [2:54] > The Other One [2:58] > Cryptical Envelopment [1:39] > Deal [4:19] ; Sugar Magnolia [5:55] ; Ramble On Rose [5:50] ; Not Fade Away [4:40] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [6:32] > Not Fade Away [2:42] ; One More Saturday Night [4:02] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011714.mp3 Thanks so very much for your support of the Deadpod! More '71 goodness this week as we get to dive into the second set of the Dead's performance on 8/26/71 at Gaelic Park in the Bronx, New York, New York. This set has plenty to keep your interest including Weir singing 'I wish I was a headlight..." in I Know You Rider, a smokin' hot Other One, a fine Uncle John's Band, and THEN we get to the conclusion.. a rockin' Saint Stephen->NFA->GDTRFB->NFA.. the Dead would play only one more St. Stephen in 1971 then put it away till 1976.. Pigpen is here too of course, and we have a chance to enjoy him on a great 'Next Time You See Me'... The Johnny B. Goode encore is always a mark of a show the boys had fun performing! This week it's set 2 of 12/5/71 .. sure this one is not as crispy as many boards from this era, but this is such a fine, energetic performance that in my opinion it makes up for all the flaws in the recording.. Listen to the wonderful transitions from Dark Star into Me & My Uncle back into Dark Star and then into Sittin' On Top of the World... these are truly exquisite. This is a fine example of relatively early Grateful Dead.. I'm also a huge fan of the closing NFA->Goin' Down the Road->NFA.. and even in 71, when they do a Johnny B Goode encore, you know the boys were having a good time! Grateful Dead 12/5/71 - Sunday Felt Forum - Madison Square Garden - New York, NY Set Two: Truckin' Ramble On Rose It Hurts Me Too Sugaree Sugar Magnolia Dark Star > Me And My Uncle > Dark Star > Sittin' On Top Of The World Me And Bobby McGee Big Railroad Blues Mexicali Blues > You Win Again Not Fade Away > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad > Not Fade Away ; E: Johnny B. This is a fine second set from the Fall of 1976 - enjoy this one along with the fine Fall weather.. I especially recommend that you savor the wonderful Slipknot.. as well as the Franklin's Tower that follows.. this is really an under appreciated gem. The Dancin'->Drums->Wheel->Ship is not only unusual but very nicely done, especially the Ship of Fool.. this one makes a truly wierd but wonderful transition back into the Dancin' reprise.. There's no point in describing the GDTRFB.. listen to it.. You'll love the rockin' end to this show.. Grateful Dead - October 1, 1976 Market Square Arena - Indianapolis, IN Two: Might As Well ; Samson And Delilah Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower ; Dancing In The Street > Drums > The Wheel > Ship Of Fools > Dancing In The Street > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad > One More Saturday Night Encore: U.S. Blues You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod101212.mp3 I hope that you might consider making a donation to support the Deadpod.. This week we get to hear the second set from the Parmount Theater in Seattle Washington, September 29th, 1977. I think this is quite a nice set with an outstanding He's Gone, Stella Blue and an Uncle John's Band encore to soothe your soul... I hope you enjoy it! In other news - the Europe 72 Vol. 2 CD contest is OVER! I received a goodly number of entries and I want to thank each of you for all the kind things you had to say! I'd love to respond to each of you but I probably don't have time so I hope you don't take offense - I also wish I had enough CDs for everyone but of course I don't. This week we get to listen to the second set from this fine show that took place at the Greek back in 1984. I think you'll find that while the Help->Slip->Frank isn't remarkable, the Estimated->Eyes->Drumz is more than worthwhile. I also really like Jerry's work in Truckin', and the Wharf Rat is a keeper for sure. Grateful DeadGreek Theatre - University of CaliforniaBerkeley, CA Set Two: Help On The Way [3:52] > Slipknot! As summer (unofficially) starts this weekend I can't think of a better way to bring it in than with the rousing Scarlet->Fire that starts off this week's Deadpod. Jerry really does this justice and I hope you can take the time to listen to how Jerry and the band really did justice to these works of art... this is a fine second set.. I'm a fan of the Dear Mr. Fantasy... This week we have the entire second set of the Dead's wonderful performance at the Orlando Arena on April 7th, 1991. A splendid example of Garcia and Hornsby, this set opens with a splendid Crazy Fingers into an always enjoyable Playin'>Uncle John's>Playin' sandwich... I especially enjoy the jamming in the Playin' reprise, which goes into a very enjoyable drumz>space segment. The set closes with a wonderful Hornsby presence on the 'Baby Blue' encore..
