Behind the Scenes With… is a conversation about what it’s really like committing to someone and their passion. How it shapes the life we’re building, the way we communicate with our partner, and the community we become part of. And, what it’s like being on the same team as someone who is obsessed with what they do.
Season 1 is coming to a close, and we're rounding things out with a Behind the Scenes view of how Skatewives (my internet persona) came to be. My husband, Ryan, was tasked with facilitating this "interview," and we touch on everything from how Ryan got into skateboarding, my swimming career, how we ended up living in the van, and what Skatewives has given me over this last year. Morgan McNallie Blunck, wife of professional freestyle skier, Aaron Blunck, is on the podcast! Aaron started skiing when he was just 18 months old, thanks to growing up in Crested Butte in a ski family known for starting the Crested Butte Ski School. Skiing quickly became a passion, and Aaron went from competing in the youth Olympics to being on the inaugural US Olympic team going to the Sochi Olympics. Since then, he's been a regular competitor on the freestyle competition circuit, notably winning Gold at X Games and being crowned the AFP halfpipe champion in 2017. Most recently, Aaron won bronze at last week's Dew Tour halfpipe competition. Morgan and I discuss how she and Aaron juggle his travel schedule with her school and caring for their horses, dogs, and cat. We talk about what it's like marrying a skier when you didn't grow up skiing, and how she stays balanced while life feels totally chaotic. Join me in going behind the scenes with Morgan McNallie Blunck.
Alec Beck, husband of professional skateboarder, Amelia Brodka, is on the podcast! Amelia fell in love with skateboarding after moving from Poland to the US as a young girl, and began competing professionally in 2009. Amelia quickly noticed a clear lack of opportunities and visibility for women in skateboarding and made the documentary Underexposed: A Women's Skateboarding Documentary for her final thesis at University of Southern California. While Amelia's professional skateboarding career progressed, she continued pushing for parity between genders within Skateboarding, helping to get skateboarding into the Olympics - where she also competed ! Alec and I discuss sharing a passion with your partner, why people fall in-love with skateboarding, and how to make an impact without taking an impact. Lally Newman, wife of BMX rider, Zach Newman is on today's episode! Zach's been riding BMX for nearly 3 decades and earned a bronze medal at the 2018 X Games in the BMX Vert X competition. Shortly after that, X Games removed the BMX Vert competition from the Games and Zach's passion for riding needed to find a new outlet. Lally and I discuss the profession of BMX riding outside of competitions and how inspiring it is watching your partner continue to pursue their passion despite forces outside of their control. Lally recommends checking out pflag.org - the nations largest organization dedicated to supporting, educating and advocating for LGBTQ+ people and those who love them
Chelsea Carbonell, wife of professional BMX rider Nick Bruce, is on today's episode. In 2012, Nick won the Free Flow Tour BMX dirt championship (an amateur contest), which earned him automatic entry into Dew Tour preliminaries, launching him into the world of riding BMX professionally. Nick is known for landing the first flair tailwhip to tailwhip back (flair windshield wiper) and for landing the first 360 double tailwhip to downside tailwhip. 4 years ago he qualified to be one of the first BMX riders to ever compete at the Olympics - BMX's first year as an Olympic sport, and has been selected for the 2024 Qualifier Series for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.
