This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy, and Dana welcome Connor back on the show to discuss the 1986 drama The Color of Money.  It's got the director (Scorsese).  It's got the cast (Newman, Cruise, Mastrantoniosmithjonesjohnson).  It's got the pedigree (sequel to the 1961 classic The Hustler).  It's even got the location (Atlantic City, New Jersey).  There is just something missing from this movie.  It's not bad.  It's just not that good either.  Maybe it is the Eric Clapton of it all.  Enjoy the podcast!Jason, Andy and Dana will discuss a 1986 movie weekly, breaking down all the nonsense there within. The 3 hosts all work together and everyone else around them was getting really annoyed at all the movie talk, so they decided to annoy the world in podcast form.Check out previous seasons to hear them discuss 1982, 1983, 1984 & 1985 movies, as well as a full season of Love Boat episodes (if that is your thing). When the Sequel Gets it Right

Video Store Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 19, 2026 24:46

This week on the Video Store Podcast I am recommending four sequels that understood what they were doing. Not every follow up needs to top the original. Sometimes the smarter move is to change perspective, lean into experience, or admit that the audience already knows the rules. These films take different approaches, but all of them show intent rather than obligation.Bride of Frankenstein (1935)James Whale treats the sequel as a chance to reshape the story rather than extend it. The film is openly stylized, emotionally direct, and comfortable mixing humor with unease. Elsa Lanchester appearing as both Mary Shelley and the Bride signals how self aware the film is from the start. At just over an hour it wastes nothing, and every choice feels deliberate. Universal horror rarely let directors put this much personality on screen, which makes it stand out even now.Psycho II (1983)Instead of chasing shock, this film focuses on Norman Bates after years of confinement. Anthony Perkins plays him with restraint and patience, letting the tension come from uncertainty rather than spectacle. The movie also knows the audience brings baggage with them, and it uses that knowledge carefully. Released at a time when many horror sequels went broader, this one went inward. The Color of Money (1986)Paul Newman returns to Fast Eddie Felson as someone shaped by time and compromise. Martin Scorsese treats The Hustler as history, not a template to be copied. The film is about pride, mentorship, and what it means to keep competing when winning is no longer simple. Newman earned his Oscar here, and it feels tied to the character's accumulated weight rather than a single performance beat.Gremlins 2 The New Batch (1990)Joe Dante uses the sequel to tear the whole idea apart. The film is packed with effects, jokes, and commentary, and it never pauses to justify itself. It openly mocks sequels, corporate culture, and even the audience's expectations. The commitment is total, and that confidence is why it works. These four films do not share a tone, a genre, or a strategy. What they share is clarity. Each one knows why it exists and what it wants to explore next. That is what makes them worth renting again, not as curiosities, but as examples of sequels that made real successful choices. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Based in San Diego but rooted in Nashville, Margie serves as a champion for leaders who want to elevate their impact and build cultures anchored in connection, integrity, and clarity.SHOW SUMMARYIn this episode of Selling from the Heart Podcast. Larry Levine and Darrell Amy are joined by Margie Newman Tsay, founder of Intesa Communications Group, who shares her expertise in strategic communications, reputation management, executive coaching, and crisis response. Margie emphasizes the need for clarity, brevity, and effective communication during crises and how these skills are essential for building trust and credibility. She also highlights the role of continuous learning and vulnerability in becoming a successful communicator, regardless of age or gender. The episode underscores the overlooked necessity of crisis communication training in the sales profession and offers actionable insights for sales leaders and professionals.KEY TAKEAWAYSCommunication requires repetition - Say things 10-11 times before people truly retain them; don't assume once is enough Make the customer the hero - Focus on their goals and needs, not your product or yourself Reputation is built daily - Trust and authenticity come from how you show up every single day, not just when making a sale Surprises are for birthdays - Over-communicate to avoid catching people off guard in business relationships Crisis communication essentials - Focus on brevity, roles, and goals; reduce oxygen to the flame rather than escalating Diversify your network - Learn from people across different ages, genders, and industries to expand your communication toolkit Humans first in crisis - Remember everyone defaults to fear and ego under pressure; sometimes people just need to be heardQUOTES"Selling from the heart means remembering that it's not about you. Make the customer the hero." "Surprises are for birthdays. You gotta communicate, communicate, communicate in four different ways to make sure people get it." "Leadership is context. When we stop communicating and giving that context, trust erodes." "No one is born a great communicator. This is a learned skill. You can start today being a great communicator." "In a crisis, our brains are ego and overwhelm. We immediately need to know what is going on, how do we solve for it, and what's my job." "What's the closest gator to your boat? You take 'em one gator at a time." (on prioritizing in crisis) "Everyone is a human first. Ego and fear don't bring out the best in any person, and that is what you're dealing with in a crisis."Learn more about Margie Newman Tsay.LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/margienewmantsay/Learn more about Darrell and Larry.Darrell's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/darrellamy/Larry's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/larrylevine1992/Website: https://www.sellingfromtheheart.net/ADDITIONAL RESOURCESDiscover Heart-Centered Leadership:Explore the Culture from the Heart Podcast and uncover the secrets to thriving workplace cultures. In this episode of Straight White American, Jesus, Brad Onishi kicks off 2026 by unpacking a new framework that helps make sense of the escalating cruelty, chaos, and seemingly self-destructive moves of the Trump administration—from ICE violence in Minnesota to threats against Greenland and Venezuela. Drawing on a recent paper by scholars Stacey Goddard and Abraham Newman, Brad introduces “neo-royalism”: a vision of power that rejects democracy in favor of loyalty to a sovereign, enforced by political, economic, and military elites. This theory, Brad argues, clarifies Trumpism as a project of extraction, hierarchy, and domination rather than governance, and mirrors the core argument of his forthcoming book, American Caesar: How Theocrats and Tech Lords Are Turning America into a Monarchy. Paragraph 2 Brad shows how neo-royalism operates both abroad—through tariffs, territorial threats, and deal-making with other strongmen—and at home, where protection, funding, and even basic rights are treated as rewards for loyalty to the king. He connects this logic to Christian nationalism's shift from nostalgia for the 1950s to a far older vision rooted in monarchy, divine right, and exclusion, where cruelty is justified and institutions are dismantled because they limit absolute power. The episode closes with updates on the show's expanded 2026 plans, including new long-form Sunday interviews and the launch of Reign of Error with Sarah Posner, plus an invitation to subscribers to dive deeper into how neo-royalism, Christian nationalism, and authoritarian politics are reshaping the American experiment. Thursday afternoon means a fresh episode of Real Life was recorded and edited, and it's ready to help you wrap up the week. On today's podcast, the guys discussed Christmas delays, sports rink advertising, the World Juniors, and more. The guys kicked off the Thursday episode of Real Life with a conversation about Christmas delays and how long we're allowed to accept them as excuses. Tyler has been waiting for parts to fix his toilet, but the company he ordered them from keeps citing the holiday break as the reason he doesn't have them yet. Somehow, that led to a discussion about advertising at the arena and how times have changed so much in the last two decades.Changing gears, the conversation turned to Connor McDavid's brilliance, and how this 16-game heater he's on is making everyone else look like dopes. From the goals to the shots to the speed, everything is clicking for the captain right now, and there doesn't seem to be much the rest of the league can do about it. Sticking with hockey, the guys walked through Canada's performance at the World Juniors, and whether losing to Czechia for the third straight year should raise alarms with Hockey Canada. Are we losing because hockey is a rich-kid sport? Were the boys thinking about this too much? Finally, the guys wrapped up the podcast with the Thursday episode of Real Life with a random collection of topics, including Nation staff spending habits, beefs of the week, Chalmers' New Year's Eve hot tub trouble, and whatever else came to mind. Given that the boys haven't recorded an episode in a few weeks, the last half of the podcast was all over the map. Needless to say, Thursday's episode of real life was all over the map. In this episode, I sit down with Lacey Newman for a grounded, honest conversation about what actually creates long-term success — in business, leadership, and life. We talk about discipline versus motivation, identity-based standards, and why so many high performers burn out chasing short-term wins instead of building something sustainable. An Essay in Aid of a Grammar of Assent was Newman's most difficult work. While not a formal epistemology (theory of knowledge), Newman prompted a movement away from modern epistemology, stressing certainty that is best found in logic and mathematics, to common sense epistemology, affirming truth that is not absolutely certain. Bishop Barron explains why this epistemology is proper to religious knowledge, which includes notional and real assent.   Topics Covered: Why assent is not certitude  Religious Liberalism  Notional and Real Assent  Conscience  Links: Article: A Meditation on the Grammar of Assent Video: Dr. Reinhard Huetter on Newman Word on Fire Institute: https://institute.wordonfire.org/   NOTE: Do you like this podcast? “Praise to the holiest”From The Dream of Gerontius by St. John Henry NewmanPraise to the Holiest in the heightAnd in the depth be praise:In all His words most wonderful; Most sure in all His ways!O loving wisdom of our God!When all was sin and shame,A second Adam to the fightAnd to the rescue came.O wisest love! that flesh and bloodWhich did in Adam fail,Should strive afresh against the foe,Should strive and should prevail; And that a higher gift than graceShould flesh and blood refine,God's Presence and His very Self,And Essence all-divine.O generous love! that He who smoteIn man for man the foe,The double agony in manFor man should undergo; And in the garden secretly,And on the cross on high,Should teach His brethren and inspireTo suffer and to die.On November 1 of last year, All Saints Day, Pope Leo XIV declared Saint John Henry Newman – Cardinal Newman – as a Doctor of the Church. There are thousands of saints—but there are only 38 Doctors: saints who not only inspire us by their example and aid us by their intercession, but whose writing and teaching have had a profound impact on the Church. Cardinal Newman's writings have shaped the Church's understanding in many ways—especially his teaching on the development of doctrine and on Catholic education. Newman was more than a theologian: he was a preacher, a poet, even a novelist. The poem Scott read is taken from his long poem The Dream of Gerontius, which was published in 1865, when Newman was 64 years old. This poem is written in parts like a verse drama or an oratorio (it was later magnificently set to music by Elgar).Gerontius means “old man.” In the poem, Gerontius is an “everyman,” a “soul” who experiences death and what comes after death. The poem begins with Gerontius, the old man, on his deathbed, friends and priest gathered around, praying for him. But his death is only the beginning. Most of the poem takes the form of a dialogue with his guardian angel, who introduces him to the mysterious world of heaven and helps him prepare to meet God face to face.  At the end, he comes before God's throne, and then is led –joyfully - to Purgatory to be made ready for heaven. The poem Scott read is one of several choruses of angelical beings which the soul hears along the way. It's a song of praise, which marvels at the “loving wisdom” and “wisest love” of God in the redeeming work of Christ. The poem uses the Scriptural image of Christ as the “new Adam.” In Adam, our “flesh and blood” was vanquished; in Christ, that same flesh and blood prevails against the enemy. But there is more than a victory won here: there is “a higher gift than grace,” for in Christ our “flesh and blood” are “refined,” with God's Presence, Self, and Essence. Christ is truly human—and truly God.The last two stanzas speak of the suffering Christ underwent, for us, and as one of us. The “double agony” is interior and exterior: anguish of soul in Gethsemane, and physical torment on the cross. God's wise love is also “generous love”: for when Christ dies on the cross, he is still teaching, showing us how to suffer, and how to die. This song comes close to the end of The Dream of Gerontius. This great mystery of our redemption is what prepares the soul to enter the presence of God. And judgment is no longer terrifying. In life, says Gerontius, “the thought of death / And judgment was to me most terrible. / I had it aye before me, and I saw / The Judge severe e'en in the crucifix. / Now that the hour is come, my fear is fled.” In the face of Christ's generous, self-emptying love, fear is no longer possible.Newman's poem about the life that awaits us after death has the feeling of an adventure, a great journey, as the soul discovers that life is not over—it has only just begun. As with poems like The Divine Comedy of Dante and Paradise Lost of Milton, we come away from The Dream of Gerontius feeling that heaven and the afterlife are more real, more vivid, than this life and this world.Newman describes eternal life with urgency and eagerness, without ever dismissing this life as unimportant. Instead, the poem invites us to live life differently, and to look to death—and even judgment—with joy and hope. As Pope Leo XIV said of Cardinal Newman, “The lives of the saints teach us that it is possible to live passionately amidst the complexity of the present, without neglecting the apostolic mandate to shine like stars in the world” ( Pope Leo XIV).

Addressing the relationship between law and the visual, this book examines the importance of photography in Central, East, and Southeast European show trials. The dispensation of justice during communist rule in Albania, East Germany, and Poland was reliant on legal propaganda, making the visual a fundamental part of the legitimacy of the law. Analysing photographs of trials, Agata Fijalkowski's Law, Visual Culture, and the Show Trial (Routledge, 2023) examines how this message was conveyed to audiences watching and participating in the spectacle of show trials. The book traces how this use of the visual was exported from the Soviet Union and imposed upon its satellite states in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. It shows how the legal actors and political authorities embraced new photographic technologies to advance their legal propaganda and legal photography. Drawing on contemporary theoretical work in the area, the book then challenges straightforward accounts of the relationship between law and the visual, critically engaging entrenched legal historical narratives, in relation to three different protagonists, to offer the possibility of reclaiming and rewriting past accounts. As its analysis demonstrates, the power of images can also be subversive; and, as such, the cases it addresses contribute to the discourse on visual epistemology and open onto contemporary questions about law and its inherent performativity. Bizarre News - December 2025 | Paranormal Podcast In this December edition of Bizarre News, we kick things off with a terrifying close-to-home story from Canton, Ohio, where an off-duty police officer working security at a Walmart experienced what could have been a fatal encounter. While booking shoplifter Shane Newton and his female accomplice in the back of the store, the officer performed only a partial pat-down before turning to radio the station—that's when Newton pulled out a concealed pistol and raised it to fire. In what can only be described as divine intervention, the gun jammed at the critical moment, giving the officer just enough time to deliver a flying knee strike that broke Newman's rib and allowed him to wrestle the weapon away. We also dive into psychic Uri Geller's bold claims about the interstellar comet 3I Atlas, which he insists is actually an alien spacecraft carrying extraterrestrial beings who have peaceful intentions for humanity. Geller even reveals his own alleged encounter from 50 years ago when he claims he was shown frozen alien bodies by Werner von Braun deep beneath NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, connecting his past experience to current cosmic events. Our bizarre journey continues with the disturbing case of Cedric Lodge, a former Harvard Medical School morgue manager who was sentenced to eight years in prison for running a dark web body parts trafficking operation. Between 2018 and 2020, Lodge sold human brains, skin, hands, and even complete faces as if they were baubles or trinkets, with one horrifying example involving skin being tanned into leather to bind a book. We wrap up with a geological mystery from Bermuda, where scientists have discovered a massive 12.4-mile thick layer of rock sitting between the oceanic crust and Earth's mantle—an anomaly never observed anywhere else on the planet that may finally explain why this archipelago appears to float above the surrounding ocean despite having no volcanic activity for over 30 million years.

What if taking Mary seriously actually deepens, rather than distracts from, devotion to Jesus? Art historian and theologian Matthew Milliner joins Mark Labberton to explore that possibility through history, theology, and the Incarnation. In a searching conversation about Mary, the meaning of Marian devotion, and the mystery of the Incarnation, they draw from early Christianity, Protestant theology, and global Christianity, as Milliner reframes Mary as a figure who deepens devotion to Christ rather than distracting from it. "I don't see how anyone cannot understand this to be the revolution of revolutions in regards to the way that women are understood." In this episode, they reflect on Mary as presence, witness, and theological key to understanding God's entry into human life. They discuss Marian devotion before the Reformation, excess and restraint in Christian practice, the Incarnation's implications for embodiment and gender, Protestant fears and recoveries, global Marian traditions, grief and discipleship, and why Mary ultimately points beyond herself to Christ. Episode Highlights "I love Jesus so much that I love his mom too. Isn't she great too?" " What relationship do you have in your life where if you knew the parents of the person you're in relationship with, that would damage the relationship? … It's a sign of deep intimacy." "There is no Christianity without Mary. That's how God came into the world." "She is my tutorial in grief." "If it's the real Mary you're dealing with, she will point you to Jesus." "The answer to the abuse is to point to the best use." "She became a presence in the church for me." "I don't see how anyone cannot understand this to be the revolution of revolutions." About Matthew Milliner Matthew J. Milliner is Associate Professor of Art History at Wheaton College, where he specializes in early Christian, Byzantine, and global Christian art. His scholarship explores theology through visual culture, with particular attention to Mary, the Incarnation, and Christian devotion across traditions. Milliner is widely published in academic journals and popular outlets, including Comment Magazine, where he has written extensively on Marian theology and Christian art. He is a frequent speaker and lecturer on Christianity and aesthetics, and his work bridges evangelical theology, Anglican practice, and historic Christian tradition. Milliner is also known for his teaching on icons, pilgrimage, and the relationship between art, doctrine, and discipleship.
