It's our year-end Holiday Roundtable Spectacular - featuring a look back at the year's newest additions to "what used-to-be" in professional sports (RIP MLB's "Oakland" Athletics & the NHL's Arizona Coyotes), and a predictive glimpse into what might be in store for 2025 - with two of our favorite fellow defunct sports enthusiasts: Steve Holroyd (Crossecheck, Philly Classics & Episodes 92, 109, 149, 188 & 248); and Paul Reeths (OurSportsCentral.com, StatsCrew.com & Episode 46). Buckle up for our yearly mélange of amusement and bemusement at the fringes of the pro sports establishment, as we simultaneously marvel at and lament some of the most curious events of the past year, debate who and what might be next to stumble into oblivion, and conjecture about future scenarios for the next generation of defunct and otherwise forgotten pro sports teams and leagues - including: Spring football's unified UFL Arena Football League 2.0 RIP (and Arena Football One 2025) MLB's now-Sacramento-and-someday-Las Vegas (maybe) Athletics The NHL's Utah Hockey Club (fka Arizona [née Phoenix] Coyotes, via the WHA's original Winnipeg Jets) Major League Cricket Baseball's genre-bending Savannah Bananas - and its soon-to-launch Banana Ball Championship League Indoor soccer's new Baller League Premier League Lacrosse's pivot to city teams and a new women's division The new League One Volleyball (LOVB) takes on the 2nd-year Pro Volleyball Federation (PVF) NWSL soccer PWHL hockey PLUS: Can Diamond Baseball Holdings (41 MiLB teams and counting!) be stopped? In the sports world, the best players don't always make the best coaches. Wayne Gretsky is called hockey's “Great One” for a reason. As a player, he won 4 Stanley Cups and 9 MVP awards. But what some people may not know is that he also coached in the NHL. In his four seasons coaching the Phoenix Coyotes, they didn't make the playoffs once. That story often repeats itself. Magic Johnson is considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He won 5 NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers and an Olympic gold medal as part of the 1992 Dream Team. After his retirement, he also tried his hand at coaching. He resigned after only 16 games. It's the same truth for the business world, too. Just because you are good at a particular skill doesn't mean that you would make a good manager. So, why is that the standard career path for so many in the corporate world? And how can companies avoid creating an “accidental manager”? To answer those questions, we spoke with Cary Cooper. He's a professor of organizational psychology and health at the University of Manchester, the author of "Wellbeing at Work: How to Design, Implement and Evaluate an Effective Strategy," and former president of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

Today's conversation is with Daniel Carcillo, two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Chicago Blackhawks, and ten-year veteran of the NHL. Daniel also played with the Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, Phoenix Coyotes, and one season with the New York Rangers throughout his career.  Having had 4 Stanley Cup appearances over the last few years of his professional playing career, Daniel brings so much insight and wisdom into today's discussion with me. From the highs of being an athlete at the top of his game to the lows of debilitating injuries that required multiple surgeries that ultimately resulted in a opioid addiction, he has seen and experienced it all and shares many gems of insight in this conversation. It's clear that Daniel knows what it takes to be the best he can be when it comes to pursuing true passions in life, both personally and professionally. Despite having an amazing career that spanned ten years and two Stanley Cups over the course of 429 games and 164 fights in the NHL, Daniel is more defined by the human he is. He has done so much internal work to better understand his past trauma in order to live with much more authenticity, courage, resilience and purpose in his life. As a result, he continues to have such a positive impact on those who are lucky enough to come across his path. In our conversation today we cover the following themes:Early days in Daniel's life and the strengths he developed that went on to serve him so well as an athlete and entrepreneurThe power of our internal voice and how to navigate it in ways that helps to bring out our best in lifeThe importance of having a mindfulness practice to help combat tough emotions brought on by past traumaThe power of vulnerability as a tool for being as honest as possible about our experiences, needs, and wants in lifeHow to maintain motivation and purpose regardless of our pursuitsAfter his playing days, Daniel began to suffer from mild-like dementia symptoms brought on by the many concussions he sustained while playing in the NHL. He knows all too well the physical and emotional toll that can accompany these injuries. Since retiring, Daniel has devoted his life to sharing his experiences, insights, and the transformative impact of emerging therapies, as well ancient and natural medicines in regaining brain health and quality of life. This conversation with Daniel was a special one that I hope you find value in. Please share it with anyone who you feel will benefit from listening. Hope you enjoy it!!Connect With Daniel CarcilloWebsite'X' Formerly TwitterLinkedInInstagramFacebookYouTube

Matthew believed that joining the Panthers, with a core of players around his age, provided the best opportunity for success. The trade was influenced by Matthew's desire to play alongside players like Barkov, Reinhardt, Bennett, and others. The Florida Panthers had a remarkable playoff run the previous season, eliminating strong teams like Boston and Toronto. Keith Tkachuk attributes the team's success to their identity, playing a heavy, fast style that involves physical play. He mentions that the team's mentality and unity contribute to their winning streak and current standing at the top of the Eastern Conference.Keith Tkachuk discusses the challenges faced by his other son, Brady Tkachuk, who plays for the Ottawa Senators. The team has undergone significant changes, including new ownership, management, and coaching staff. Brady, as a young captain, has faced adversity, but Keith emphasizes the importance of focusing on what can be controlled on the ice and learning from the experience.Keith Tkachuk expresses his optimism about the viability of the Arizona Coyotes as a franchise. He acknowledges the challenges faced by the team, including issues related to the arena and ownership. However, he believes that with the right plan, commitment, and a new arena in the right location, the franchise could succeed. He suggests that Gary Bettman's involvement indicates that there may be a plan in place for the team's future.RESOURCE LINKS Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgBj1LV0-DMfBhcRPSJZLjAX: https://twitter.com/NHLWraparoundNeil Smith: https://twitter.com/NYCNeilVic Morren:

This week for our 25th episode John welcomes NHL legend Jeremy Roenick to the show to discuss his iconic career, the many evolutions in the sport of hockey, and his outspoken position on everything from NHL refs, the toxicity of social media, and the challenges and rewards that come with entrepreneurship and investing.  Jeremy Roenick is a former professional hockey player who played the majority of his career in Chicago alongside fellow legends Chris Chelios and Ed Belfour. He was drafted 8th overall in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft by the Blackhawks, for whom he played from 1988 to 1996. Roenick subsequently played for the Phoenix Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks over the course of his 20 year career. He also represented Team USA in several international tournaments including The Olympic Games. On November 10, 2007, Jeremy became only the third American-born player to score 500 goals. After retiring in 2009, Roenick joined NBC Sports as a hockey analyst and in 2010 began his path towards furthering his entrepreneurial goals.   This was a wide ranging chat that includes exploring Jeremy's many experiences both on and off the ice. We dive into everything from broadcasting, entrepreneurship, and real estate investment. Jeremy reflects on the challenges that came with being drafted at the age of 18, his infamous Blackhawks trade, and his true thoughts about that controversial decision that led him to Phoenix, Philadelphia, LA, and eventually San Jose. In addition, John talks with Jeremy about his experiences at NBC and how ultimately… “the media created a Jeremy Roenick that really does not exist.”  Listeners will also hear about Jeremy's newest entrepreneurial journey, co-founding Whiskey in the Wild, a high-end, triple distilled, blended chocolate whiskey that aims to appeal to a diverse audience of spirit lovers who may not think of whiskey as their drink of choice. Jeremy breaks down the company's love for their creation, insistence on quality, and shares their vision for providing a deliciously drinkable whiskey that is not your grandpa's jet fuel. Rhuigi is a great story of how hard work and a creative vision can lead you to success, no matter where you started from. His family immigrated from the Philippines when he was just a kid and he immediately started soaking up the culture. Rhuigi was always a hustler and started his career in fashion by buying designer brands at thrift shops and selling them for a much higher price to the kids at his school. From there, he just kept growing. Part of the reason for his success was that he was willing to show up and put in the work. He was just happy to be around designers and would hang out and help with whatever was needed. He wasn't even getting paid. But what he learned is far more valuable than an hourly salary. He took what he learned and started his own brand Rhude, which blew up after Kendrick Lamar wore one of his shirts. He expanded the line and it's become a wildly successful streetwear brand. But he's moved way beyond Rhude. He's now the creative director for Bally and the Phoenix Coyotes. In addition to having his own line at Zara. We talked all about his new ventures and he had some great advice for the young entrepreneurs out there. As the world recovered from the worst of the COVID-19 outbreak, a new labor market hit the economy. Companies that laid off employees started hiring again, but finding talent required more money than before. Workers utilized this newfound leverage by voluntarily leaving their posts for greener pastures during the following Great Resignation. With inflation eating into some (or all) of the gains employees made in compensation, some economists are wary of a looming recession. That possibility has Jack from Indiana nervous and looking for answers from the WorkInSports Podcast:“Hey Brian, I just listened to your interview with mark McCullers that you published on Wednesday, and I loved your first few questions where you pushed him on what a recession could mean for jobs in the sports industry. I'm a senior in college, I'm going to hit the market in May-ish, and all this talk has me really nervous. Can you help me out with some tips and strategies to help people like me stand out even in a down labor market?”Recession-Proof Careers in SportsThe last time a recession hit (unrelated to COVID-19) was 2007-09 when unemployment peaked at 10% in 2009. Here are a few highlights from what happened in sports at the time:The Bad• The NHL's Phoenix Coyotes went bankrupt• The WNBA contracted a team and reduced roster sizes• IndyCar's Detroit Grand Prix was cancelledThe Good• TV ratings for sports held steady or grew as fans turned to their screens instead of going to the stadium• Large market teams like the New York Yankees still spent money, doling out $460 million on three free agents in that spanThe TV ratings side is important in the pro sports space because media rights deals for professional sports have ballooned sports franchise values. For example, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, purchased for $183 million in 2003, are for sale and valued at roughly $2.5 billion two decades later. So, are sports careers recession proof? Not entirely. While the high-dollar professional sports mostly hum along uninterrupted, college sports, start-up leagues, and fringe sports feel the pinch with their limited resources. Unfortunately, those are frequently areas for entry-level employees to find their footing in the sports industry. So, how do you get your foot in the door if a recession hits? Here are a few tips from the WorkInSports Podcast that we explore in the full episode:Diversify your skill setLevel up your networking effortsPolish your interview skillsFocus on quality, not quantity, in your job applicationsCatch the full podcast for more tips to recession proof your sports career.
