Send us Fan MailOn today's show we travel down the road to Carlow University Pittsburgh's MFA in Creative Writing Program during its annual June residency at Trinity College, Dublin where we have been invited to interview novelist Caitriona Lally about her latest book, the memoir Home Economics. So grab that flat white, latte, tea and rasher sandwich and have a listen to Caitriona's fascinating account of balancing life as a cleaner in the housekeeping department of Trinity College with the life of a successful writer. Bold and thought-provoking, self-deprecating and soaked in Caitríona Lally's singular voice, her first memoir quietly but forcefully puzzles over personal/home economics, creativity and the true impact of 'success' and 'failure' on a writer's life.'Since I've had my first book published, I've earned more from cleaning than from writing. The home economics don't add up.'Between 2015 and 2021, Caitríona Lally published her first two novels, Eggshells and Wunderland. To buy her time to write during those years, she returned to the housekeeping department at Trinity College Dublin, a job she once held as a student. This begins a negotiation between the practical and creative demands of her life, further complicated when she becomes pregnant and almost impossible when the pandemic hits.Reviews for Home Economics"This is absolutely one to read about the reality of 'making it' as an artist, and how to live, make money and create."– AOIFE BARRY, THE JOURNAL"Hilarious, audacious, and deeply felt. An idiosyncratic hymn to the drudgery of life!"– SARA BAUME"I thought I'd be interested in Home Economics because I too work a manual job that pays a pittance, yet still provides more income than writing books. And yes, Lally is wonderfully insightful about the difficulties and advantages of such a life. But in the end it was her wit, her ever-curious and amused outlook on the daily trials and joys of life, that had me hooked. This book has that delicate quality of seeming simple while containing all the complexity of trying not simply to make a living, but to live."– LUCY SWEENEY BYRNE "A remarkable piece of writing ... As a fellow writer, I read the book with a profound sense of respect for what Caitríona has achieved, particularly given the difficult circumstances under which much of this work has been produced. Her account of sustaining a writing life alongside paid labour and motherhood is both unsparing and generous, and it resonated deeply with me ... There is something quietly bracing in encountering such a lucid account of a writing life, one that refuses myth-making while still allowing space for ambition, desire and joy ... This is a generous, intelligent and finely wrought book."– PATRICK HOLLOWAYLogo designed by Freya Sirr.Intro/outro music: Colm Mac Con Iomaire, 'Thou Shalt Not Carry' from The Hare's Corner, 2008, with thanks to Colm for permission to use it. The 24-year sentence handed down to Sean McGovern in the Special Criminal Court prompted gasps in the packed courtroom. It will also have sent shock waves through organised crime in Ireland and all the way to the Dubai prison where Daniel Kinahan is awaiting extradition back to Ireland and an appointment in the same court.McGovern was a senior Kinahan cartel figure, formerly based in Dubai before his extradition in 2024, and his jail term is among the longest gangland prison terms. He was convicted of directing the murder of Noel Kirwan and the attempted murder of James “Mago” Gately. The evidence against him – including incriminating conversations with other gang members on phones they believed to be deeply encrypted – prompted his guilty plea.So how did the judge explain the 24-year sentence? And what does this mean for the Kinahan cartel? Irish Times crime and security editor Conor Lally explains. Also last month, Lally came into the In the News studio and, in the episode “Nobody is Stopping Until They Are All Dead”, explained the background to this case and how the Garda built their evidence through a mixture of sophisticated data mining and old-style policing.Presented by Bernice Harrison. This week, we head to Sherwood Forest to revisit Disney's animated classic Robin Hood (1973). With animal outlaws, corrupt royalty, catchy folk songs, and one of Disney's most lovable duos in Robin and Little John, does this laid-back cult favorite still hold up, or is it just nostalgia talking? We break down the movie's charm, recycled animation, iconic music, and surprisingly sharp themes about power, greed, and heroism, all while trying to decide if Prince John is secretly one of Disney's funniest villains ever. ...with Ann-Kathrin Krause In this episode, Ann-Katrin Krause, a PhD student in educational psychology at the Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education in Frankfurt, discusses her research on the role of habits in students' learning strategy use, exploring why students often default to ineffective strategies like rereading despite knowing better alternatives exist. The conversation covers how environmental cues trigger habitual behaviours, the distinction between automaticity and effectiveness, and practical strategies like habit stacking and if-then planning. Ann-Katrin also highlights how teachers can foster effective study habits by embedding strategies into classroom routines. When Sean McGovern, a trusted member of the Kinahan organised crime cartel, was extradited from Dubai last May he can't have known the depth and breadth of the evidence gathered by the Gardaí that would prove that he had directed cartel murder plans at the height of the deadly Kinahan-Hutch feud.It was all laid out in the Special Criminal Court this week as encrypted phone messages between him and fellow gang members during 2015 and 2017 were read out, surveillance footage from over a decade ago was shown and data culled from his laptop was revealed. The solid case against McGovern (40) saw him plead guilty to two charges of directing an organised crime gang.According to Irish Times Crime and Security Editor Conor Lally, the encrypted messages read out in court show how casually the Kinahan cartel talked about taking lives – and how hard they worked at it.In this episode, Lally details how the sentencing trial unfolded, the drama in court and how McGovern, once a feared lieutenant who thought he had escaped justice by fleeing to Dubai, reacted.Presented by Bernice Harrison. Notorious Dublin criminal Robbie Lawlor was shot dead in Belfast in 2020, when he arrived at a house in the Ardoyne area of the city, to collect a drug debt.Lawlor was a 36-year-old father originally from Coolock, Dublin, though he had relocated to Laytown, Co Meath, for the final years of his life. He was the chief suspect in a number of gangland attacks, including five murders over a 15-year period to 2020.Now new details have emerged, which outline the alleged planning of the killing, and the economics that underpinned it. They are contained within a legal document, seen by Irish Times crime and security editor Conor Lally. It alleges a three-way coalition acted together to murder Lawlor and how the main players in this plan stood to gain financially because debts they owed would die with Lawlor, or would be cancelled as a reward for his murder. In this episode, Lally explains how the murder took place and the impact it had on the gangland scene. This summer's travel plans could be facing turbulence, as European airports warn of a potential jet fuel shortage linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East. With reports of rising prices, possible flight cancellations, and disruption looming from as early as May, there are growing concerns about what it could mean for holidaymakers — and for regions like Clare that depend heavily on tourism. So, are we jetting off as planned, or could this crisis ground both travellers and local business hopes for the season ahead? Alan Morrissey was joined by Séan Lally the Chair of the Clare Tourism Forum and Gearóid Mannion, Ennis travel Counsellor to explore this further. A CMO Confidential Interview with Megan Lally, the CEO and Co-Owner of Highdive, an agency which has created more than 10 Super Bowl ads. Megan explains why you shouldn't separate brand building from AI, the risk of optimization overwhelming strategy, and the importance of having partners tell you what you need to hear. Key discussion topics include: deciding whether your brand should or shouldn't be in the Super Bowl; why it's often challenging to have a good relationship with your agency; why brands should consider skipping the pitch process; and the reason you should ask your agency "Are you doing your best work for us?" Tune in to hear why you shouldn't care about "what everyone else is wearing to the party" when judging creative and case studies on Jeep, Lays and MSC Cruises. What does your agency really want to tell you — but won't? Megan Lally, CEO and Co-owner of **High Dive**, pulls back the curtain on the client-agency relationship: why great creative gets killed before it starts, when the pitch process does more harm than good, and the two questions every CMO should be asking their agency right now.Megan shares how AI is *saving* ideas rather than replacing them (the Jeep talking-animals campaign), why State Farm became the #1 consumer brand in 2025 by outperforming competitors who outspend them, what makes the Super Bowl worth it (and when it isn't), and why blending in with your competitors is the costliest marketing decision you can make. This episode is hosted by Mike Linton — former CMO of Best Buy, eBay, Farmers Insurance, and Ancestry.com.---

Over 60% of Clare's hotel rooms have already been contacted to provide accommodation by the Ryder Cup's official travel services. Up to 200,000 fans are expected to descend on the MidWest for the biennial golf competition between Team Europe and the United States next September. Clare's Tourism stakeholders, meanwhile, held a major networking event at the Rine Hotel last night, which will also aim to harness the benefits of the Irish Open in Doonbeg and Walker Cup in Lahinch later this year. Clare Tourism Advisory Forum Chair and Hotel Woodstock Co-Owner Seán Lally says it's a "pinch me" moment for the county.
Confidence has been expressed that Clare will meet its accommodation challenges for three international golf tournaments coming to Clare and the MidWest in the near future. Visit Clare's annual 'Tourism Together' conference held at the Rine Hotel in Newmarket-On-Fergus heard, however, that an immense local effort will be required for this county to reap the full benefits. This September, both the Walker Cup and Amgen Irish Open will be coming to Clare, with courses at Lahinch and Trump Doonbeg respectively gearing up for the occasions. Both events are expected to inject millions into the local economy, however industry experts predict this county will see a much greater spending boost from the 2027 Ryder Cup in Adare. Approximately 18 months out from that tournament, the Ryder Cup's Official Travel Services team has already contacted 1,100 out of Clare's 1,800 hotel rooms to source accommodation. Chair of Clare's Tourism Advisory Forum and Hotel Woodstock Co-Owner, Seán Lally says short-term lets will have a huge role to play in meeting overall demand. A presentation from Fáilte Ireland showed the average spend of a golf visitor to Ireland is €2,360 per person. A leading travel expert has cautioned, however, that while Clare has some of the best links courses and coasts to showcase in the Ireland, a plan needs to be put in place to reassure tourists that Ireland is a safe destination to access in the event of prolonged conflict in the Middle East. Eoghan Corry from Travel Extra.ie says there are huge benefits on offer. The Chair of Clare's newly formed Tourism Strategic Policy Committee, meanwhile, wants to see destinations across the county reap the rewards of the increased exposure to come. Ennistymon Fianna Fáil Councillor Shane Talty says all areas of Clare have an opportunity to create return customers.

What started as a one-man play about the life and times of Gerry Hutch became a two-hander this week when, in a curtain-raising surprise, Hutch himself appears on stage to deliver a prologue.Rex Ryan premiered his play The Monk – called after the widely used nick-name of his subject – last summer but for its second outing it moved to a much larger Dublin venue, The Ambassador, for a weeklong run.Ryan, who produces, stars and directs The Monk is, says Irish Times crime and security editor Conor Lally, a powerful presence on stage.Hutch, adds little says Lally – except audience pulling power. He went along to a performance to see how Hutch, whose career he has followed closely, is portrayed. He gives his plain-speaking review here.Lally found the section on the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin deeply distasteful and the extent to which RTÉ journalist Paul Reynolds lives rent-free in Hutch's head simply bizarre.Presented by Bernice Harrison. It details the decline of the Mughal Empire after Aurangzeb's death in 1707, leading to fragmented provinces like Bengal and the rise of the Maratha Empire as a dominant power. European influences are highlighted: the British East India Company with bases in Bombay, Madras, and Calcutta, and the French with strongholds like Pondicherry. The narrative focuses on key events starting with the Black Hole of Calcutta in 1756, where Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah imprisoned British captives in horrific conditions, prompting retaliation. Robert Clive's victory at the Battle of Plassey in 1757, aided by betrayal from Mir Jafar, secured British control over wealthy Bengal (20-25% of India's GDP). The episode covers the Siege of Madras (1758–1759), where French forces under Comte de Lally failed due to supply issues and British reinforcements. The decisive Battle of Wandiwash in 1760 saw British General Eyre Coote defeat the French, leading to the Siege of Pondicherry (1760–1761), which ended French influence. Britain's naval superiority, alliances, and strategies established dominance, marking 1759 as the "Annus Mirabilis." The podcast emphasizes colonial expansion parallels with North America, using maps and portraits for a documentary feel. It concludes with the Treaty of Paris, where France regained possessions but without fortifications, ensuring British ascendancy in India. The tip-off that led the Garda to begin a major search for the bodies of Jo Jo Dullard and Deirdre Jacob is likely not new according to crime and security editor Conor Lally. The piece of land on the border of counties Wicklow and Kildare has been in the Garda's sights for many years but since the disappearance of the young women, missing since the 1990s, are now considered murders, ongoing reviews of the files bring new leads and new thinking on the investigation.News on Monday that gardaí had begun an extensive dig on the land was accompanied by mention of Dullard and Jacob leading to speculation that it had been determined that both young women were the victims of the same murderer. Not so, says Lally, who notes that gardaí suspect Jacob, who disappeared in broad daylight, was killed by convicted rapist Larry Murphy, while Dullard was killed by an unknown male who gave her a lift as she tried to get home.Lally analyses this new phase in the investigation.Presented by Bernice Harrison. Watch the full coverage of the live stream on The Emily D. Baker YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/live/V_gRWoUtPKY A hearing was held on August 5th, which was intended to continue the evidentiary portion of the motion to dismiss for the Myles King Murder Case, but this did not happen. Instead, the court requested the defense and prosecution to collaboratively create a comprehensive list of all evidence, when it was turned over, and which items are considered prejudicial by the defense. This is complicated by the fact that the prosecution did not consistently bate stamp documents. Another significant issue is the ongoing delay in receiving discovery related to Former Trooper Michael Proctor's text messages, which are relevant to five cases, including the Myles King case. The court is waiting for federal authorities to release this discovery. The defense is frustrated by the continuous "dripping faucet" of new discovery, making it difficult to prepare their case. The bar for dismissing a case due to discovery failures in Massachusetts is high, and typically, the remedy is to grant more time for trial. The Karen Read case has brought attention to this widespread issue of lingering discovery in Massachusetts cases. The next hearing for the Myles King case is scheduled for August 12th at 2pmET, where the judge will continue to try and clarify the specific evidence at issue for the motion to dismiss. Neither Adam Lally nor Proctor testified on August 5th, and they are not expected to testify on August 12th either.
