Tired of business trips that feel like a copy-paste of the same sterile ballroom and conference room? How do you transform a mandatory work trip into a memorable, culturally-rich experience? In this episode, we tackle the secret to planning truly authentic corporate events that leave a lasting impact on attendees. We sit down with a master of the craft, Renee Jacobs, the Chief Operating Officer of MGME (McVeigh Global Meetings and Events), to uncover how professionals can escape the corporate bubble and genuinely connect with a destination.Join us as Renee Jacobs pulls back the curtain on the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industry. She shares a wealth of corporate event planning ideas that go far beyond the typical agenda. We explore the powerful shift in MICE industry trends toward creating genuine "sense of place" activities, from sourcing local food for a surprise culinary competition to organizing city-wide "dine-arounds" for groups of up to a thousand people. Renee reveals how selecting unique corporate event venues—like historic castles in Ireland, the iconic Raffles Hotel in Singapore, or the Alvear Palace in Buenos Aires—is the critical first step in setting the stage for an immersive experience. The conversation also delves into the growing importance of integrating corporate social responsibility activities into the itinerary. Renee explains how CSR initiatives, such as local beach cleanups, tree planting, or bringing supplies to a local school, can be powerfully grounding experiences that connect attendees to the community in a meaningful way, even on a tight schedule. From fishing for piranhas in the Amazon to multi-million dollar gala dinners at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, Renee shares unforgettable stories and practical strategies that prove business travel doesn't have to be boring. This episode is packed with inspiration for creating your own authentic corporate events.About Our Guest:Renee Jacobs is the Chief Operating Officer of MGME (McVeigh Global Meetings and Events), a leading global agency specializing in event planning for Fortune 500 companies, life science organizations, and major associations. Every so often a film comes along that feels like it carries the spirit of Studio Ghibli and old-school Disney charm. For me, that was The Glassworker — a film that first landed on my radar a year or so ago. I became intrigued, dove into the incredible 90-minute behind-the-scenes documentary (which is inspiring in its own right), and now I've finally had the chance to see it at a preview screening in LA ahead of its U.S. release on September 5th.Directed by Usman Riaz, The Glassworker is Pakistan's first hand-drawn animated feature, an anti-war romantic drama that blends delicate artistry with heartfelt storytelling. While not without its imperfections, the film shows immense promise, and you can clearly see that Riaz is a filmmaker at the start of what I believe will be a wonderful career.I share my thoughts on the film, why it's worth supporting, and how backing projects like this ensures that new voices in animation get the chance to build a lasting body of work. If you're drawn to hand-crafted animation, heartfelt romance, or stories about the cost of war and the resilience of art, The Glassworker might be for you.The Glassworker releases in U.S. theaters on September 5th.Watch the making-of documentary here: The Glassworker – Behind the Scenes: https://youtu.be/rxAOUJt1PaU?si=plGMiL7JHRCh-EPN

In this episode of The Photographic Collective Podcast, Miles and Jared sit down with LA-based photographer and educator Summer Grace. Known for her film and digital artistry, as well as her growing influence in education, Summer shares a raw, authentic look into her journey of balancing business, motherhood, and creative fulfillment. The conversation touches on her shift from shooting a heavy wedding load to focusing more on Summer School, her educational platform, while raising her daughter Georgia alongside her husband Jake. Summer opens up about the tension between business and art, why success is not defined by six-figure income metrics, and how she finds balance by prioritizing sustainability, creativity, and family.Listeners will hear candid insights on avoiding burnout, defining personal success, resisting trends, motherhood as a creative discipline, and embracing business as an art form.Success is Personal: Summer redefines success as living to work (loving what you do so it doesn't feel like work), rather than working to live. For her, success blends creativity, financial sustainability, and family balance.Business as Art: She views business not as separate from creativity but as a complementary art form. Running a strong business allows her the freedom to be a better artist and parent.Resisting Trends: Summer emphasizes staying true to personal style and brand rather than conforming to industry fads.Education with Integrity: Instead of teaching “get rich quick” six-figure formulas, she focuses on holistic growth—helping photographers create art they're proud of and a life they love.Motherhood & Discipline: Parenthood has made her more disciplined and efficient, valuing her time more deeply while still embracing imperfection.Creative Renewal: Some of her best work comes from self-initiated, unpaid projects. She encourages artists to carve out time for shoots that are purely creative.✅ Key TakeawaysSuccess is Personal: Summer redefines success as living to work (loving what you do so it doesn't feel like work), rather than working to live. Jamia speaks to how stories can liberate, build empathy, and reimagine power, while she and Rachel reflect on the wisdom passed down from their parents and ancestors—encouragement, community-mindedness, and joy.Jamia also shares her perspective on self-care: setting boundaries as a way of honoring personal limits, embracing intentional rest, and creating rituals that replenish the spirit. Joy becomes a central thread throughout their discussion—not as something fleeting, but as resistance, healing, and connection. The conversation touches on Jamia's books A Year of Black Joy, which offers 52 practices for cultivating joy, and Make Good Trouble, inspired by John Lewis and the idea of activism rooted in joy. Together, Rachel and Jamia explore how curiosity, gratitude, and joyful defiance can shape not just personal growth, but collective empowerment. This episode is an invitation to rethink the role of joy in your life—not as an afterthought, but as a force for resilience and community.More about Jamia Wilson:Jamia is an award-winning feminist activist, writer, speaker, and podcaster. How the Vulcan Mind Meld from Star Trek Works

“My mind to your mind. My thoughts to your thoughts…”Vulcans right before they guess your phone password. We've all seen them do it. A Vulcan gets cozy with an individual, gently places a perfectly-manicured and long-fingered hand along their face, gets that distant look in their eye, and suddenly their minds are one. No, it's not a clever party trick, it's an incredibly useful information gathering tool, as well as an intimate (even emotional) act that Vulcans don't take lightly and thus only deploy in circumstances that absolutely demand it. Yes, we're talking about the Vulcan Mind Meld this week! And despite being one of the most famous pieces of Star Trek lore there is surprisingly (or perhaps thankfully) little on screen explanation of it. But explaining how a mind meld may or may not work requires us to dig into how brains actually conjure up and store things like memories, the electrical impulses that make up thoughts, and actual real world non-verbal communication. There are also some fascinating pieces of Star Trek history to be uncovered in our quest to determine not just the “how” of this famed plot and story device, but the “why” of how it came to be. Our hosts, Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi and Tamara Krinsky have once again performed a mind meld of their own to bring you the very best breakdown of sci-fi and pop culture you're going to find in this quadrant.Check out the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here if you don't believe us!https://youtu.be/YllWLbrhKP0?si=xJxH6Gbb2mUVnbUdFURTHER VIEWINGDespite being one of the most famous bits of Star Trek lore, the Vulcan Mind Meld is something that's only been used relatively sparingly on screen. You probably know the broad strokes of what it is and what it's supposed to do, but here are the specific episodes and moments we used for reference in this episode:Star Trek season 1 episode 9 - “Dagger of the Mind”Star Trek: The Next Generation season 3 episode 23 - “Sarek”Star Trek: Voyager season 1 episode 8 - “Ex Post Facto”Star Trek: Voyager season 2 episode 16 - “Meld”Star Trek: Enterprise season 1 episode 17 - “Fusion”FURTHER READINGDo you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! What is a Mind?Oh no, are we getting all philosophical again like we did in our recent Freaky Friday episode? Well…maybe not as much this time. In fact, to prove it, here is an exceedingly scientific breakdown of what makes up the brain itself: neurons and how they work! See also: the concept of “theory of mind” which we have also discussed recently!Brain Energy SignalsIn order to detect what a brain is thinking, you need to read the signals…which may be electrical in nature but come in units of measure we aren't used to dealing with!Mirror NeuronsNo, not neurons that make you behave like your evil double from a parallel universe (sorry, this is a Star Trek episode, so couldn't resist), these are far more practical. And in a way, it's a form of mind meld!Technological Mind MeldsThe scientific study that Hakeem references where scientists used technology to essentially create a mind meld was captured on video here.Where are Memories Stored in the Brain? In order to access the thoughts of another, they have to theoretically be stored somewhere, right? All this and more answered here.Behind the Scenes! If you want to go deeper into Tamara's explanations about how the Mind Meld came to be, we always recommend These are the Voyages, TOS Season One by Marc Cushman and Susan Osborne and The Fifty-Year Mission: The Complete, Uncensored, Unauthorized Oral History of Star Trek - The First 25 Years by Ed Gross and Mark A. Welcome back to Beyond the Thesis with Papa PhD! In this episode, host David Mendes sits down with Jillian Rilley – founder, writer, keynote speaker, and consultant whose decades of work focus on helping people navigate change and accelerate learning, especially in disruptive times. Drawing on her experiences across Africa, Asia, and Central Europe, Jillian shares her personal journey of making bold transitions, including her pivotal move from academia in the U.S. to South Africa during a historic turning point. ogether, David and Jillian dive deep into the concept of “the 10 Permissions,” the subject of Jillian's upcoming book, offering guidance for anyone feeling stuck on their current path or struggling with the weight of external expectations. The conversation takes an honest look at the discomfort and growth that comes from choosing a non-linear, self-directed life—especially relevant for graduate students, early career researchers, and anyone stepping off the well-trodden academic or career path. They discuss concrete practices for building “discomfort tolerance,” the power of self-permission, and the importance of cultivating a diverse portfolio of experiences—both for personal satisfaction and future adaptability. If you've ever faced doubt, disappointment, or confusion from your support network over career decisions, or are simply looking to make your journey more intentional, this episode is filled with insight and practical advice for you.   Jillian Reilly is a founder, writer, keynote speaker, and consultant. Having spent her 30-year career working in social, organizational, and individual change across Africa, Asia, and Central Europe, Jillians focus is on helping people unlock their ability to navigate change and accelerate growth and learning. Jillians upcoming book, The Ten Permissions, guides readers in permitting themselves to design lives that fully leverage the possibilities of our disruptive world. What we covered in the interview: Discomfort Tolerance is a Superpower: Learning to distinguish between discomfort and danger is crucial. Most growth happens when we venture into the unfamiliar, so don't let discomfort masquerade as danger and hold you back from essential, uncomfortable conversations or bold decisions. Approval is Desirable, Not Essential: Especially when making “novel” decisions that disappoint or surprise family and close ones. Your path won't always be easily understood by others, but their approval isn't a requirement for action. Back yourself, be your own permission giver. Diversify Your Experiences: Academia often encourages tunnel vision, but Gillian urges building a “portfolio of capabilities.” Explore beyond your specialization – network, revive old hobbies, join communities, and experiment. This adaptability and broad perspective are key assets in today's chaotic (yet possibility-filled) world. Jillian's advice is a timely reminder: Your life isn't about ticking the next institutional box, but about cultivating agency and resilience for a world in constant flux. Moneyball: B2B Marketing Lessons on Turning Metrics into Wins with CMO at Linedata, Scott Greenwald

    Remarkable Marketing

When small-market teams face off against deep-pocketed competitors, winning means rewriting the rules of the game. That's exactly what happened in Moneyball, where the Oakland A's turned to unconventional metrics and overlooked talent to outsmart the league's biggest spenders. In this episode, we explore the marketing lessons behind it with special guest Scott Greenwald, CMO at Linedata.Together, we dive into how B2B marketers can rethink the metrics that matter, compete asymmetrically against larger rivals, align teams around bold strategies, and tell stories that stick, all while staying credible, prepared, and ready to adapt.About our guest, Scott GreenwaldAt Linedata, Scott's tenure as Chief Marketing Officer has been marked by the successful leadership of a dynamic, multi-lingual team and the creation of transformative digital marketing strategies. Our efforts have resulted in a staggering 600% year-over-year increase in web traffic, contributing significantly to a 20% generation of the sales pipeline.Scott's role extends to overseeing the marketing budget and launching a new CRM and Marketing Automation tool, which has streamlined Linedata's pipeline review process and accelerated the sales cycle. With a focus on driving market visibility and thought leadership, Scott's strategic campaigns across key global markets have empowered Linedata to cement its presence in the competitive financial services industry. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Moneyball:Focus on the outcomes that matter.  In Moneyball, the point wasn't to sign the flashiest “five-tool” players; it was to score runs. The same is true in marketing. Scott says, “In the end, it's how many of the MQLs turn into opportunities or new business? And that's what we focus on.” Metrics that look good in a report mean nothing if they don't turn into real pipeline and closed deals. In B2B, your scoreboard isn't impressions or clicks, it's revenue.Credibility over volume in content. AI makes it easy to crank out more content than ever before, but more isn't always better. “If we suddenly increased our, our, our output fivefold, we, we would lose that credibility,” Scott says. His team uses AI to adapt and reformat high-quality core pieces, not flood the market with fluff. Your audience notices when your content is consistent, credible, and worth their time—and they notice just as fast when it's not.Compete asymmetrically. The A's couldn't outspend the Yankees or Red Sox, so they had to outthink them. That meant challenging every “sacred cow” in baseball and finding value others overlooked. Scott explains, “You can't come in here and say, I'm going to transform this marketing organization into what I had before… you have to assess the talent pool [and] review the best way of spending the marketing budgets you have.” In marketing, the same rule applies: when you can't match your competitors' budget, you win by rewriting the playbook.Quote“It is our responsibility as storytellers of not just giving the business what they want, but also giving the audience what they need to hear.”Time Stamps[00:55] Meet Scott Greenwal, CMO at Linedata[01:04] Why Moneyball?[06:45] Behind the Scenes of Moneyball[10:00] B2B Marketing Lessons from Moneyball[31:51] The Importance of Storytelling[37:18] The Role of Communication in Change Management[41:02] The Evolution of Marketing Automation[45:30] Balancing Content Quality and Quantity[47:00 Final Thoughts & TakeawaysLinksConnect with Scott on LinkedInLearn more about LinedataAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Looking Through The Glass Onion

Billy Joel's The Stranger turned a working-class piano man into a worldwide superstar. In this episode, the McGuigan Brothers break down the 1977 classic track by track, from the satire of “Movin' Out” to the suite-like brilliance of “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” and the timeless ballads “Just the Way You Are” and “She's Always a Woman.” We talk Phil Ramone's production magic, the trust between Joel and his band, and why this album made him one of the biggest artists on the planet. In this episode we uncover how it all got started for Mo from simply growing up around laughter and humor, to realizing that's what he wanted to do for others and decided to pursue comedy. We talk how it started with improv and then what the transition was like from that to the world of stand-up, hitting low points where he felt he had no direction or purpose even while chasing career goals, how beginning to travel to NY began to change his career trajectory and the great networking tips he learned to put into action and practice while doing so.
