Everything is getting worse, but the country hasn’t collapsed. This is all by design. Donald Trump is a useful idiot for the people behind the scenes and Project 2025, most notably Russell Vought. The Trump administration is using the nation’s finances like a personal piggy bank for themselves and large corporations while gutting agencies that provide critical services. The misconception is that Trump is driving things into the ground. He’s not. He’s just making things so shitty that the corporate state looks good in comparison. Why are journeys one of cinema's defining storytelling forms? Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey brings one of literature's greatest journeys to the screen. Laura Gommans and Tom Ooms discuss whether the film succeeds as an epic, why Nolan's obsession with IMAX shapes the experience as much as the storytelling, and whether a cast this famous ever lets the world of the film feel fully inhabited. They also introduce LAB111's new season of quests, exiles and homecomings, from Aguirre, the Wrath of God and Beau Is Afraid to The Seventh Seal, asking what these films reveal about why cinema returns to stories of people searching for a place to belong. Why do so many argument scenes feel strangely lifeless, even when characters are shouting, interrupting each other, and making excellent points?Because conflict isn't about disagreement. It's about change. In this episode of Master Fiction Writing, I'll explore why professional argument scenes feel so compelling, why amateur ones often become disguised exposition, and what readers are really looking for when two characters collide. You'll discover why characters rarely argue about the thing they're actually arguing about, why objectives matter more than opinions, how identity drives conflict, and why the best arguments permanently alter relationships rather than simply exchange information.Whether you're writing literary fiction, crime, fantasy, romance, historical fiction or memoir, this episode will change the way you think about dialogue, conflict and scene construction. Why arguments aren't conversations - they're attempts to change another person. The hidden reason most fictional arguments fall flat. Why readers care more about emotional change than who's right. How objectives create dramatic momentum. Why characters defend identity more fiercely than opinions. The psychology behind memorable conflict. How every argument should function as a miniature story. Why winning almost always comes at a cost. The importance of reversals, emotional movement and consequences.Great argument scenes aren't built around disagreement. They're built around incompatible futures. When two characters argue, each is trying to reshape the other's world in some way. Every line of dialogue should pursue an objective, every tactic should evolve when it fails, and every scene should leave the relationship changed.Readers don't become invested because someone wins the debate. They become invested because something valuable is at risk.Try this exercise:Choose one argument scene from your current manuscript and ask yourself:What does each character want before the conversation begins? What future is each character trying to create? What identity is each character protecting? What changes by the end of the scene? If the argument disappeared completely, would the story still work?If you struggle to answer those questions, you've probably found the scene's biggest opportunity for revision. The next time you write an argument, stop asking:“What are my characters talking about?”Instead ask:“Who is trying to change whom—and what happens if they fail?”That single shift in perspective will transform the way you approach dialogue. If you'd like coaching, visit: www.thebookcoach.coIn the next episode, ee'll move from theory into practice, exploring the tactics characters use when they're trying to win: humour, guilt, silence, interruption, subtext, emotional escalation and the invisible strategies that make dialogue feel alive. If you enjoyed this episode, please consider subscribing to Master Fiction Writing. Reviews and recommendations help other writers discover the show, and if you know someone wrestling with dialogue or conflict, send this episode their way. After all, every writer has written an argument scene where two perfectly intelligent people calmly explain the theme of the novel to one another. You don't have to keep doing that.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is regarded as one of the finest entries in the franchise, but even classics continue to evolve right up until release. This week on The Trek Files, Larry Nemecek welcomes authors and historians John and Maria Jose Tenuto to examine a fascinating production document: a March 23, 1982 retake script created just weeks before the film premiered. The pages reveal subtle but important changes to some of the movie's most memorable moments, from Kirk's first encounter with David Marcus to the famous "Remember" scene between Spock and McCoy. How much did Kirk originally know about his son? Who actually performed the mind-meld hand seen in the reshoot? And how did a handful of pickup shots help shape what would become one of Star Trek's greatest films? Along the way, John and Maria Jose pull back the curtain on Nicholas Meyer's production, Harve Bennett's stewardship of the franchise, and the extraordinary efficiency that turned a modestly-budgeted sequel into a science-fiction masterpiece. In this episode of Meant to Win, Dr. Stephanie Wigner takes you behind the scenes of her VIP day with Ed Mylett, from getting picked up on a dock in Portland, Maine to touring his private island, where within 15 minutes he told her something unexpected: you've already won, and you're allowed to stop here. But if you're going to keep going, don't half-ass it. This conversation matters because it challenges high-achievers to stop negotiating with their potential and commit fully to the expansive vision. Dr. Wigner opens up about the last 12 months that brought her to her knees, the pressure of being seen, nine months of internal battle, and the recalibration that looked like quitting but wasn't. It's a bold reminder that pausing isn't quitting; it's preparation for the next level.CHAPTERS:00:04 Welcome to Meant to Win01:17 Behind the Scenes with Ed Mylett02:30 The Decision to Fully Commit03:49 Navigating Growth and Pressure05:10 The Internal Battle and Recalibration06:27 Belief and Vision Execution07:50 Embracing Rest Without Stagnation09:49 Life Vision vs. Business GoalsKey Takeaway: Stop negotiating with your potential. About halfway through 2026 — and just a few months before the critical midterm elections — Democrats appear to be doubling down on healthcare as a campaign issue as costs rise and insurance coverage declines.Meanwhile, Congress is taking aim at nonprofit hospitals. Shefali Luthra of The 19th, Rachel Roubein of The Washington Post, and Victoria Knight of Bloomberg Government join KFF Health News' Julie Rovner to discuss these stories and more. Also this week, Rovner interviews KFF Health News' Samantha Liss, who wrote the latest “Bill of the Month” story, about a woman who changed Medicare Advantage plans and found herself at a disadvantage.Visit our website to read a transcript of this episode.Plus, for “extra credit” the panelists suggest health policy stories they read this week that they think you should read, too: Julie Rovner: Axios' “Chinese Fentanyl Makers Find New U.S. Market in Peptides,” by Tina Reed. Shefali Luthra: Stat's “Online GLP-1 Prescriptions Are Often Fast, Easy — And Low on Clinical Oversight,” by Katie Palmer. Rachel Roubein: The New York Times' “Efforts To Help Smokers Quit Stall Under Trump,” by Chistina Jewett. Victoria Knight: Stat's “Booze Schmooze: The Alcohol Industry, Frazzled by Headwinds, Wields Its Power Behind the Scenes,” by Isabella Cueto and Lev Facher.
Affordable Interior Design presents Big Design, Small Budget
In this episode of the Uploft Interior Design, I take you behind the scenes of my busy summer, balancing family life with a full client schedule while training a talented new interior designer. I share stories from recent design consultations, including helping clients overcome the challenge of envisioning new furniture layouts and creating more functional, beautiful spaces. Along the way, I discuss current design trends I'm seeing everywhere—from warm neutrals, green accents, and fluted wood to the growing influence of AI-generated inspiration—and explain why I believe function should always come before symmetry. I also answer thoughtful questions from my trainee about evaluating floor plans, exploring multiple layout options, and why it's important to start every design with the essential furniture pieces before focusing on decorative details. Whether you're designing your own home or considering a career in interior design, I hope these behind-the-scenes insights help you approach every space with more confidence and creativity. Kaôh F***ing Rong Rewatch Finale w/ Julia Sokolowski Survivor: Kaôh R?ng reaches its dramatic conclusion, and hosts Rob Cesternino and Chappell are joined by special guest Julia Sokolowski to break down the unforgettable finale and reunion. Rob and Chappell lead a deep-dive recap as Julia—one of the season's most memorable players—returns to reflect on her journey, the bitter jury, and how every move shaped the final outcome in Survivor's 32nd season. The episode opens as Rob and Chappell relive the intensity of the finale and discuss standout moments from the Tribal Council and jury. They analyze whether Aubry Bracco's strategic gameplay was enough, why Michele Fitzgerald won over the jury with a late-game surge, and how the fire-making challenge at final four created a genuine survivor showdown.
