E331. Where Leaders Drop the Armor: Inside Collaborate 2025

    April Garcia's PivotMe

You know what no one tells you about being a leader? It's lonely as hell. Everyone looks to you for answers, for calm, for direction — but where do you go when you're running on fumes? Welcome, Pivoter. Let's get real. In this raw and emotional episode, April takes us behind the scenes of Collaborate 2025, where high performers and leaders came together to do something rare — drop their armor. No posturing, no highlight reels, no pretending to “have it all together.” Just truth, connection, and conversations that matter. This is a reflection on what happens when leaders stop performing strength and start sharing it. When we stop leading alone.  Key Takeaways Leadership Loneliness Is Real: Even the most successful leaders feel isolated. The myth of “figure it out alone” is what burns us out. Armor Down, Impact Up: True strength comes from vulnerability — not perfection. When we open up, we give others permission to do the same. Behind the Scenes at Collaborate: April shares the real moments from the event — the tears, the breakthroughs, the laughter — that reminded everyone they're not alone in the fight to lead well. Connection Is the 10X Multiplier: The biggest growth isn't from tactics or templates — it's from trusted rooms of peers who see you, challenge you, and lift you up. Redefining Leadership: The strongest leaders aren't the ones who never struggle — they're the ones who create safe spaces for others to be real too.  Actionable Items Find Your Room: Surround yourself with people who call you up, not just cheer you on. Real connection beats performative success every time. Check Your Armor: Ask yourself, “Where am I pretending to have it together when I don't?” That's your growth edge. Build Regular Reflection Time: Leadership doesn't just happen in meetings — it happens in the quiet moments where you assess your truth. Model Openness: Your team doesn't need your perfection — they need your humanity.   Collaborate 2025 wasn't just an event. It was a reminder that leadership without connection is unsustainable. The strongest leaders know when to lay down the shield, when to say, “me too,” and when to lean in for support. “Drop the mask. Keep the mission. You don't have to lead alone.”

Text usAppalachia by H. Dalby lands hard and without apology. This is not a slow-burn mood piece; it's visceral, jagged, and indebted to the slasher tradition in the way it stages violence as both sudden and inevitable. The tale moves through small-town corridors and backroads where ordinary objects and familiar spaces become instruments of menace. Scenes snap into place with the merciless economy of a knife cut—brief, precise, and lingering in memory. The dread here is physical: the crunch of footsteps on gravel, the metallic taste of panic in the mouth, the grotesque choreography of pursuit and escape. It reads like a nightmare filmed on 16mm, all harsh angles and unforgiving light, and it leaves the listener with the same cold residue a good slasher leaves on the skin. What makes the story effective is Dalby's refusal to sentimentalize the violence. The gore isn't indulgent spectacle; it's a functional element of a world where danger is mundane and cruelty wears everyday clothes. The characters are given just enough detail to make their fates matter, then the narrative tightens and advances without wasting sympathy. Listeners who expect catharsis will find none; instead there's the grinding truth of vulnerability exposed and the stubborn, ugly logic that sometimes governs small communities when something feral wakes up among them.A few production notes and reminders: the music for tonight's episode is original and written and performed by Empress— their score undercuts and amplifies the horror in all the right places, and their work ethic on this run has been outstanding. Production and episode logistics were handled by Mickie Eberz, who keeps the whole project moving. The raffle is ongoing; the winner will be drawn from the email list of premium subscribers, so double-check your signup if you want your name in the hat. Premium also gives access to the archive of older episodes. There's a texting service (link in the episode description) where listeners can send short messages for possible on-air reads; important to note, we cannot see who sends those messages or respond to them off-air — messages are only pulled and responded to live.Credits: Produced by Mickie Eberz. A conversation with Paul Pfeiffer, Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa, and Anthony Elms recorded in May 2025. Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa makes art, writes about it, and occasionally edits essay anthologies. His artist's book, INDEX 2025, is out now from ROMA Publications, and his recent essay “ECHO—LOCATION,” on installations at Dia Art Foundation by Cameron Rowland and Steve McQueen, featured in the April issue of e-flux journal.  Recent exhibitions include Scene at Eastman, at George Eastman Museum (2025), Greater New York at MoMA PS1 (2021), and But Still, It Turns at the International Center of Photography, New York (2021).  Read more essays in e-flux journal by Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa here. Paul Pfeiffer recasts the visual language of pop spectacle to investigate how media images shape our perception of the world and ourselves. Working in video, photography, sculpture, and sound, he is drawn to moments intended for mass audiences (live sports events, stadium concert tours, televised game shows, celebrity glamour shots), which he meticulously samples and re-edits to expose an uncanny emptiness underneath. From the hyperreality of photo retouching and digital erasure to the endless repetition of video loops, his mastery of postproduction allows him to magnify the surreal aspects of contemporary existence, where bodies become sites of saturated observation, and violence-as-entertainment flirts with nationalism, religion, and ancient myth. While he also experiments with the format and scale of his works, immersive audiovisual installations often cohabit with portable fetish objects in his exhibitions. Throughout his practice, Pfeiffer seeks to reflect and heighten the existential condition of the viewer as consumer by perversely blurring the boundary between voyeurism and contemplation. The recent exhibition discussed in this episode, Paul Pfeiffer: Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom was presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the MCA Chicago.  Read a review from e-flux Criticism of Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, Los Angeles by Juliana Halpert. Anthony Elms organizes exhibitions and writes. He recently organized Rodney McMillian: Neighbors for the Henry Art Gallery, Seattle, Wa. opening in October 2025. An essay on artist Oliver Ressler, "Ellipsesverse," posts online this fall for Ressler's exhibition Scenes from the Invention of Democracy at the Museum Tinguely. His essay "Begin to begin to begin to begin to begin" is forthcoming in Ecstatic Aperture: Perspectives on the Life and Work of Terry Riley. from Auryfa / Shelter Press.

From playing bass with Kill Hannah to booking breakout artists at JBTV, Greg has lived through multiple eras of Chicago music and helped shape the city's underground into a global influence. He shares the journey from sneaking into raves and punk shows to sharing stages with icons, why the “bloghouse” years created a blueprint for today's DJ culture, and what it really takes to build a scene. We dive into his philosophy on curation, taste, and trust, plus the challenges of breaking artists in a city that often celebrates its own only after they've left. Greg also gives his perspective on the future: how AI could flood dance music, why bands may be poised for a comeback, and why real fans — not algorithms — still decide which art lasts.

Consistency doesn't have to be so rigid. In this solo episode, I share what I've learned about reimagining consistency in a way that actually works for creatives, entrepreneurs, and leaders. For years, I believed the traditional advice: stick to the same schedule, follow the proven and popular formula, just keep going no matter what. But what I found was that kind of rigidity often leads to burnout, shame, and misalignment.Instead, I've discovered a more authentic approach. I walk you through the four principles that have helped me build momentum without losing energy: focusing on what lights you up, considering the impact you want to have, finding your own rhythm, and setting process goals instead of chasing outcomes.Along the way, I reflect on the early days of launching Working Your Way, what I've learned from outsourcing vs. DIY, and how showing up with intention has created opportunities I never could have planned for.If you've ever struggled to “stay consistent” or felt guilty for not doing enough, this episode will give you permission to let go of perfection—and design a version of consistency that feels aligned, sustainable, and uniquely yours.Resources:Episode 27. Stinker Madness - The Bad Movie Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 2, 2025 84:29

“Cabin Pressure” (2003) is the cinematic equivalent of being stuck on the tarmac forever with a dying paperback and a screaming air vent. It's not just dull; it's aggressively, proudly dull—an unviewable mess that mistakes droning cockpit chatter and recycled stock footage for suspense. If turbulence were interesting, this movie would still find a way to taxi around it. From the opening minutes, the film announces its priorities: beige sets, beige lighting, beige characters speaking in acronyms about systems we never see break in any satisfying way. Scenes repeat like safety demonstrations—pointless, bloodless, and performed by people who look like they've already mentally clocked out of the shift. The “action” is mostly cross-cutting between bored faces and a model plane that's never given a convincing sense of scale, speed, or danger. You can practically hear the temp track begging to be replaced by something—anything—with a pulse. The script is a wasteland of clichés and filler, the kind of movie where every problem is solved by the next line of dialogue rather than an actual set piece. No character has an arc; they have altitudes. Every attempt at ratcheting tension stalls into holding patterns: more radio chatter, more hollow commands, more reaction shots that mistake blinking for acting. Even the inevitable “hero moment” feels perfunctory, like someone looked at their watch and said, “Guess we should land this thing.” For Stinker Madness seekers, there's no campy payoff here—just the slow, oxygen-starved fade of a production that never gets off the ground. “So bad it's good” requires swagger, accident, or at least a spectacular crash. “Cabin Pressure” offers none of that. It's boredom at cruising altitude: a feature-length layover where the only emergency is keeping your eyes open.

What starts as a story inspired by a grandfather's World War II experience with champagne turns into a full-circle journey through fine dining, wine education, and app development.  In this episode of Wine Behind the Scenes, Laurel Simmons is joined by Jeff Gillis, a certified sommelier, adjunct professor, and former food and beverage director at luxury hotels in Beverly Hills and Napa Valley.  Jeff shares how his upbringing shaped his love of wine and why curating wine lists at five-star hotels prepared him for teaching and innovating. He talks about building his app, Wine Likes, a gamified platform designed to help wine lovers connect, learn, and discover new bottles.  Whether you're in hospitality, a wine student, or just someone who's tired of wine apps that don't get you, this conversation blends tradition and tech with heart and a healthy splash of fun.  What You'll Learn:  How WWII and a European-style home influenced Jeff's love of wine What it's really like to run wine programs at world-class hotels The power of educating future wine pros with science and storytelling Why supporting local winemakers is a long-term win What led Jeff to create a social wine app, and how it works The real challenges of transitioning from hospitality to tech A surprising 'wonky wine term' that might make you giggle And if you're ready to hear how the past, present, and future of wine collide in one conversation? Listen now at www.winebehindthescenes.com Jeff Gillis began his career in the hospitality industry, spending over 15 years as a food and beverage director, wine buyer, and wine director for top-tier hotels like The Beverly Hills Hotel, The Peninsula Group, and Bardessono in Napa Valley. After earning an MBA from the University of Illinois, he transitioned into biotech operations, where he also began building Wine Likes, a social platform for wine lovers. A WSET2-certified sommelier and adjunct professor at the College of the Canyons, Jeff is passionate about teaching, innovating, and making wine fun again, especially for those who want to enjoy wine without the pressure of being an expert.
