Play Episode Listen Later Mar 20, 2017

Beyond Horror is back once again after another unplanned hiatus to fill your ears with podcasting goodness! For this episode I'll give you my thoughts on the cultural phenomenon that is Stranger Things (hint-I LOVED IT!). I also give you my 13 Favorite Horror Films of 2016. I play the new super emotive song from doom metal titans Pallbearer. Not-So Random watches returns with my thoughts on the Arrow Video released American Horror Project Vol. 1 which contains 3 under seen 70's horror curiosities (Malatesta's Carnival of Blood, The Witch Who Came From The Sea and The Premonition). Watching these rekindled my interest in 70's American Horror again, it looks like I've got an idea for the next episode!

Beyond Horror Podcast is back and better than ever! I return after a lengthy hiatus from the podcasting world with a new and improved show (donâ??t worry I havenâ??t changed). I spend the opening updating you on where Iâ??ve been and whatâ??s been going on while also explaining the changes that the show has/is going through. I also preview the main subject for the episode Killer Bee Movies. The main theme is broken into two segments. In the first I give some historical context to the subject and the â??rulesâ?? of the sub-genre. Then talk about 4 films from the late 60â??s to mid 70â??s. In the second part I finish off with 3 more killer bee movies from the late 70â??s and one from the mid 90â??s. Then briefly discuss the Candyman films (which does have minimal killer bee action) and a trio of bizarre movies involving women mixing their DNA with a bee (or wasp) then becoming murderous sex-vixens (you read that right). In the Catching Up With segment I talk about a trio of superhero movies (go figure), not so funny comedies (big surprise) and animated â??familyâ?? films. Finishing with a couple of indie genre films including the highly recommended Midnight Special. In the Not-So Random Watches I once again talk about my love for John Carpenter discussing 7 of his films. I finish the show with some closing thoughts on Killer Bee movies and give my star ratings for the films. I also give you a preview of Episode 26, which will be the first of four parts on the career of none other than Mr. George A. Romero. Thanks again for listening, itâ??s great to be back doing the show.

Short Ones - Odds & Ends

B.H.P. is back again and this time I'm covering off a whole bunch of Odds & Ends before we celebrate the upcoming 25th Episode! I open with a few updates on the show and my filmmaking adventures before I go into the Top 5 which includes some interesting topics including some of my thoughts on Mad Max: Fury Road. Then I spend some time discussing a few 2015 releases and my general disinterest on most of what we've been given so far this year. Some thoughts on Avengers: Age of Ultron and more on Mad Max. My confusion over the events of Predestination and a few Patrick Wilson comedies. Then I discuss how underwhelmed I've been with the 2015 Horror releases but then sing the praise of It Follows. After that I finally give you my best of 2014 Non-Horror. I know it's June but last year was packed with amazing titles so I wanted to close out of the year. Many times throughout I mention how a title would have been placed much higher on the list of a previous year. For the music pick this episode we re-visit Rosetta who's new album is coming soon and if this track is any indication, it's going to be amazing. For Random Watches it's nothing but Marvel and Adam Sandler and the news is full of a boring centipede and more sequels/re-makes. Finally I close out with some news on upcoming episodes and a hint at the next, celebrated Episode 25.

    Episode 24 - 70's American Horror: 1971

Welcome back to another Beyond Horror Podcast! This episode I return to the 70's American Horror theme and discuss films released in 1971. In the intro I update you on what I've been up to (including some new film making news!) and some plans for future episodes. I also do the Top 5 Segment, which includes my excitement for the new Mad Max film. Before talking about specific American Horror films released in 1971 I spend a little time going over again some of the overarching themes and narratives discussed in previous episodes. The actual main theme is broken up into three separate segments; Drive In Schlock, Gothic Horror & Suspense and Satanic/Occult/Witchcraft. In each segment I spend varying amounts of time of the different titles and explore the connections that they have with each other. As for other segments I got some new Faith No More for you as the music choice, a new segment titled "Random Watches" which allows me to spend a little time talking about stuff I've watched that doesn't tie-in with my typical show focus. And as always I'll try and keep you up to date with any interested news items that I've come across. Be ready because Episode 25 is coming and I've got something special planned...

Beyond Horror Podcast returns with as the title states, my favorite horror films of 2014. This episode is short and to the point, I spend the opening updating everyone on random things and do my Top 5. Then the main body of the show is broken into two segments where I split my top 40 horror film released last year right down the middle. As always I've got some random news and the music choice for the episode is a track off the new album from the Norwegian Prog Metal masters Enslaved. Make sure to keep your eyes open for the next episode on 70's American Horror coming much sooner than later.

Beyond Horror is back once again with our annual, most anticipated of... show. Before going into what I'm looking forward to seeing in 2015 there's some maintenance that must be attended to. This includes my continual woes in releasing more than one episode a month and my new woes of casting issues with my upcoming film project. For the first part of the main body of the show I will go into detail on 30+ 2014 releases (both horror or non) before turning my focus on what I'm looking forward to seeing in 2015. As for the segments I have a new Top 5 with some current stuff, a news segment that was recorded a couple weeks ago and not one but two music choices for the episode (Future Islands & Dance Gavin Dance). I end the show by briefly going into details for some future episodes.

Episode 22 - Nature Strikes Back: Man's Best Friends

Happy New Year to all and I'm back with another installment of the Nature Strikes Back series with an episode focused on Killer Cat and Killer Dog movies. The episode begins with some updates on my trip back to the burgh and a congratulations to one of my fellow podcasters. This is followed by some film making updates and the return of the new segment within a segment, The Top 5 (Mr. Show is coming back!). The main theme is broken up into two parts Killer Cats and Killer Dogs. I start the Cat segment with some updated thoughts on the conventions of the sub-genre, where once again we'll notice some recurring theme's and plot points. I then transition into my thoughts on the Killer Cat movies watched and how many of them had a Gothic feel to them (thanks to folklore, superstition, Edgar Allen Poe and the independent nature of cats). Moving onto Killer Dog movies you'll find that the main narrative force in nearly all of them is the dedicated/family protector image typically associated with dogs. The dog movies tried much harder to incorporate the family entity as the main protagonist. Both Killer Cat & Dog movies use the unlikeliness that our companions could turn on their masters and wreak havoc in our lives. This episode is a little lite on the news but as festival season begins expect more in that department. The music choice for this episode is the enigmatic Kayo Dot, with a song that's part goth rock, part prog rock, mixed with 80 horror film score vibes. Finally I finish off the episode with my ratings for the movies watched this episode and a preview of some upcoming shows. Thanks again and until next time...
