Pallbearer released a brand spanking new album in 2024 that we've only just gotten around to. They were getting quite progressive and a little gentler on recent releases, so let's see if that trend continues here. Check in as we discuss the Opener, the Killer, the Grower and the Filler. Give the album a listen first, then give us a listen as we break it down. For show notes, credits, and previous episodes, please visit www.unshuffledpod.com. This morning Dave was absolutely giddy, because it is the dawn of his annual holy event in golf - The Masters. Rick found a restaurant in Thailand he has no interest in, there was a crazy accident at a funeral in Philly, and scientists have brought back the dire wolf from extinction... kind of. Dave shared his picks for The Masters, and we even got a song parody from a fellow fan in the audience! We also hit the phones to hear how your "sexy time" got rudely interrupted! Interview by Kris PetersRenowned doom metal merchants PALLBEARER make their return to Australia in March 2025 for an electrifying tour, promising to deliver their signature blend of haunting melodies and crushing riffs. Joining them on all dates will be special guests UK doom metal titans CONAN.The 2024 release of Mind Burns Alive finds Pallbearer navigating the space between disquiet and serenity with a singular intensity. At times poetic and blistering, their fifth full length is a heartfelt meditation on isolation, trauma and mental breakdown, framed by the possibility of redemption and the quiet aching beauty of escape.Known for their colossal riffs and unrelenting heaviness, Conan has carved a unique niche in the metal scene, drawing fans with their atmospheric yet punishing sound. This tour comes on the heels of their critically acclaimed album, Evidence of Immortality, which showcases their evolution while staying true to their doom-laden roots.HEAVY spoke with Pallbearer frontman Brett Campbell before he boarded the flight to find out what we can expect..In the interview Brett told us what has changed with the band since their last visit eight years ago, what to expect from their live show, choosing Conan as touring partners and why, their recent album Mind Burns Alive and how much of that they will be p[laying, the reaction to that album, gauging an albums' success in the modern era, the early days of the band, future plans and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Pallbearer [00:34] "An Offering of Grief" Sorrow and Extinction 20 Buck Spin SPIN048 2012 Full-length debut from this heavy doomy band from Little Rock AR. Easily one of the best records of 2012. Ray Charles & Milt Jackson [09:06] "Soul Meeting" Soul Meeting Atlantic SD 1360 1962 Two great tastes that vibe great together. Featuring Ray on piano, Milt on vibes, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Percy Heath on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. This one was written by Jackson, with illuminating parts from both Milt Jackson and Kenny Burrell. Curtis Harding [16:08] "Freedom" Soul Power Burger Records BRGR600 2014 Debut outing from this Atlanta musician. Describing his sound as "slop 'n soul", this one track has a definite Arthur Lee feel. Lou Rawls [18:49] "A Whole Lotta Woman" Soulin' Capitol Records T 2566 1966 Not a whole lotta love, not a whole lotta Rosie, but a whole lotta woman. John Coltrane with Red Garland [21:27] "Theme for Ernie" Soultrane Prestige 7142 1958 One of Coltrane's showcases for his distinctive sheets of sound style. Joined here by Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and again Art Taylor on drums. Les and Larry Elgart and their Orchestra [26:24] "You're My Thrill" Sound Ideas Columbia CL 1123 1958 Hailing from Pompton, New Jersey, these brothers developed their "Elgart Sound" in 1952 and released over half a dozen albums before parting after this album to pursue their musical interests. Mary Martin et al [30:02] "The Lonely Goatherd" The Sound of Music (Original Broadway Cast) Columbia Masterworks KOL 5450 1959 Now that's what I call yodeling! Pre-Julie Andrews obviously. Mary Martin was perhaps best known as playing the title role in the Broadway production of Peter Pan. Not sure how I knew this, but maybe it was due to living in New York for 20 years naking Broadway trivia inescapable. The Sinceros [33:23] "Take Me to Your Leader" The Sound of Sunbathing Epic EPC 83632 1979 The sticker on the cover says that this track is their featured single, so that's what I'm going with. Power pop-y new wave-y. Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass [37:10] "Casino Royale" Sounds Like... Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass A&M LP124 1967 You know I love a good shaggy dog of a film, and Casino Royale is definitely that. Well, the Daniel Craig version is too, but I'm talking about the 1967 comedy version with David Niven as Sir James Bond. Ravi Shankar [39:47] "An Introduction to Indian Music" The Sounds of India Columbia CS 9296 1968 (originally released in 1958) Re-released to tap into the growing interest thanks to the Beatles' interest in Indian music (specifically George Harrison). Relax! Simon & Garfunkel [43:56] "We've Got a Groovey Thing Goin'" The Sounds of Silence Columbia CS 9269 1966 Helped out here by The Wrecking Crew, including Glen Campbell and Joe South on guitar, Hal Blaine on drums, and Larry Knechtel on the Ray Charles-esque electric piano. Scott Walker + Sunn O))) [47:22] "Brando (Dweller on the Bluff)" Soused 4AD CAD 3428 2014 On the surface, it's an odd pairing, but as the music that fills this album suggests, it's a perfect pairing. Sunn O)))'s Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley had originally reached out to Walker about contributing to their 2009 album Monoliths and Dimensions but were unable to coordinate. Walker subsequently contacted about contributing drones to fill in the silence between his lyrics while working on his epic 2012 release Bish Bosch. Evidently, Sunn O))) brought their full stage equipment to Walker's studio for recording. If you are unfamiliar, it's a wall of Ampeg, Marshall, and HiWatt speakers with Ampeg SVT and Sunn Model T heads. Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass [56:06] "The Girl from Ipanema" South of the Border A&M SP-108 1964 South of the border, down Rio de Janiero way. It's been a hot minute, but the gang returns along with a new intro to celebrate the return of the Nine Circles Audio Thing! We're going to get back into the Album of the Month starting with July, but for now Chris returns to the mic for the first time in forever to gather the crew and talk about a few select highlights from the first six months of the year. Colin, Vince, Ian, Hera and...holy shit, DAN?! Yup, it's a full crew at the ready and madness is had, whether it's risking Swiftian armies or generally squealing with delight over some very, very good metal this year.Variety abounds as the crew gets into it, talking about Dödsrit, Inherits the Void, Ulcerate, Chapel of Disease, Job For A Cowboy, Alcest, Pallbearer, Hamferð, AWS, Thot, Ryujin, Aborted, Hammer King, Lascaille's Shroud, Farsot, and Lord Dying. No spoilers for the anticipated albums, and only a short tease about the new AOTM format moving forward, but it's a blast to be back so grab your favorite beverage, put on those headphones and dig in. See you next month! 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter (X) | Instagram
Coleman is joined LIVE in studio by former host and Powerchord brother, Chris "The Mountain" for a run down of upcoming local death metal gigs from Phrenelith, Necrot, and more; new music from Misyrion, Krash, Spectral Wound, Wormwitch, Pallbearer, and others. Not much for clean vox or chill vibes on this one, mostly just aural punishment. Please enjoy.
Send us a Text Message.Paul Tremblay returns to Talking Scared on a long orbit, like that fabled Planet X that's going to kill us all. He's back after two years for another discussion of horror aesthetics, introspective terrors and mixed-media nightmares – this time in Horror Movie, his meta-take on cursed cinema and lethal creativity. Horror Movie is about young filmmakers and the shoot that marks them all, even unto death. It's also about the making of art, the machinery of fear and the cynicism of Hollywood. But beneath all that self-reflexive interrogation, it's also just a damn creepy story. And Paul talks to me about all of it. Note – there is jet lag aplenty in this episode. An arms race of confusion and forgetfulness. It makes for a good time. Bear with us. This week's show features an awesome interview with Joseph Rowland of the mighty Pallbearer! During our chat, we hear all about the new album Mind Burns Alive out this Friday, May 17. We also discuss the band's approach of embracing the “quiet” on many of the songs, the comfort he feels in creating in music in an isolated space, and the approach they take on artwork for album covers. Things also take a turn for the philosophical, as the concept of “fate” comes up, how these days the truth requires compromise to communicate, the power of communication through music, longevity of creating art versus popular content, and the battle with being addicted the our phones. Petar and Sylvia discuss the passing of Steve Albini, the lesson he leaves behind with his approach as a engineer for heavy music, the return of Kittie with their first full length album in 13 years, Serj Tankian's comments on only wanting to do short tours for the fans, and Kerry King just needing to be a little less upfront of his conversation with Tom Araya. After a month or so of agent bashing, it was only a matter of time before someone stepped up to put us back in our place. And that someone is the brilliant Mr Tom Taaffe, the man behind the bookings of the likes of Every Time I Die, Pallbearer, Spanish Love Songs, Deafheaven, While She Sleeps, Beartooth and Elder at our festivals. What's his take on the ballache of billing and A-Z line-up posters, the rising fees for bands and promoters asking US arena-level bands to play club shows in England? What's happening with Sleep and are The Reytons a suitable headliner for 2000trees?Tom gives his honest take on it all.We go again, next Thursday morning. Be there.

Following the recent announcement of Spirit Adrift shows with Pallbearer and Rwake, Nate details his experience moving to Arkansas and cutting his teeth in the riff-fertile Natural State from 2006 until his move to Phoenix in 2011. From being neck deep in the life-changing, chaotic music scene centered around bands like Rwake and Deadbird, to forming lifelong friendships and bonds… Arkansas permanently shaped Nate as a songwriter, musician, and person. This episode barely scratches the surface, but it reveals just how deep the Arkansas roots run in Nate and Spirit Adrift's music, and just how full-circle the Ghost At The Gallows album release shows will be. In our latest episode of CCAirwaves, we engage in a fascinating conversation with Joe Mulholland, a theology teacher at Saint Ignatius High School and the guiding force behind the Arimathea Pallbearer Ministry. This remarkable ministry is a testament to the power of service. With over 200 students willingly serving as pallbearers at local funerals, they provide a ray of hope and comfort in times of grief and loss. As the seventh corporal work of mercy, the act of burying the dead holds great significance, and Joe shares how this ministry has become an integral part of the school's culture. In a world where high school narratives often revolve around career goals and academic achievements, the Arimathea Pallbearer Ministry has managed to carve out its unique story. Jeff and Ben welcome Paul Kaplan, baritone guitar player from the San Diego sludgecore band Candle$. Paul and Ben go way back as colleagues, friends, and fellow metal heads. We get to hear about Paul's metal origin story--growing up in the Bay area--seeing Neurosis in the mid-90s and playing bass in different bands. We listen to a track from the killer new demo from his band Candle$. Formed during the height of the pandemic in San Diego, the band has been tearing it up in both the metal and hardcore scenes, including opening for the classic sludge doom band -!6- (and others). Paul also shares two of his favorite tracks from the mighty Yob! A band Ben and Jeff saw recently with Cave In and High Reaper. And, by the time this episode is uploaded, Paul will see Yob with Pallbearer and Faetooth (a killer San Diego "Fairy Doom" band heard briefly at the beginning of the episode).

No, it's not a new made-up term for a sexual position—as far as we know!—it's the new Lucy Foley joint, The Paris Apartment! It's darker than a wine cellar, twistier than an alley in your favorite arrondissement, but, unfortunately, about as eventful as an afternoon sighing with ennui over a couple of Gauloises and a well-nursed café au lait in a Left Bank café. Pat your new Karen O. fringe into an appealing dishevelment, make your best face to express that you have the darkest of dark secrets and make sure you've got a skeleton key for all your neighbors' places, because it's time to take a trip into what some people are calling ... la'part-a-ment Parisienne, but what we know to call The Paris Apartment. I was thrilled to be joined by author Paul Tremblay. Check out our conversation about The Pallbearer's Club, unreliable narrators, the upcoming M. Night Shyamalan adaptation and more. Shownotes: https://booksinthefreezer.com/2022/07/26/episode-127-unreliable-narrators-with-paul-tremblay/
DUM DUM DUM!!! 100 episodes!! We did it. We reached an utterly abstract threshold together guys and we are DELIGHTED to be here. I'm also delighted to welcome Paul Tremblay back to the show for a neat bit of circularity (as he was the one to kick things off way back in episode 1). Paul's new novel, The Pallbearer's Club came out just at the right time to make him the 100th guest. I'm convinced he planned it that way. It's a tale of weird adolescence, New England folklore, Punk Rock and loneliness. Sounds typically bleak right? Well it is, but it also has jokes, a heartwarming friendship and argumentative notes in the margins – so it's both a homecoming and a departure for Paul.We talk about his early desire to be a musician, his obsessions with misinformation, the art of fictionalising the truth, and the fear that inspires his uniquely uncanny set-pieces.Oh, and we also mention a certain film adaptation that may be in the works.Enjoy! The Pallbearers Club was published on July 5th by William Morrow and Titan BooksOther books discussed in this episode include: The Bus on Thursday (2018), by Shirley BarrettLunar Park (2005), by Bret Easton EllisA Confederacy of Dunces (1980), by John Kennedy TooleHouse of Leaves (2000), by Mark Z. This week on The Treatment, Elvis welcomes director Matt Reeves, whose latest project is “The Batman” starring Robert Pattinson. Reeves also helmed two of the “Planet of the Apes” films as well as “The Pallbearer.” Reeves tells The Treatment the only way he can make large genre films is to make them personal. He says he didn't want to make another origin story for his iteration of Batman, but wanted to cover the early years of the superhero, where he was still trying to put himself together. And he discusses the similarities between Bruce Wayne and Tom, his protagonist from “The Pallbearer,” his earliest film.
