Marketing for “The Conjuring: Last Rites” billed it as the end of the series… but considering it had the biggest global opening ever for a horror movie, this franchise will inevitably live on. Tune in to hear us break down all the scariest moments (one in particular that made Matt jump), whether its 135-minute running time was necessary, and how it compared, in our opinion, to the other Conjuring films.

This week on a special Now Showing episode of Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes take a look at "The Conjuring: Last Rites" (2025), the final chapter for Ed and Lorraine Warren. After just completing their YouTube Lead Up series on the mainline The Conjuring films, Mike Field and Mike Butler appreciated how the film gave the Warrens a proper send-off, bringing closure to their story after more than a decade of haunting cases. But while the emotional wrap-up for Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga's characters worked, the rest of the film left them wanting more. The family at the center of the haunting, the scares themselves, and even the demon driving the possession all feel pushed to the background, as the focus shifts almost entirely onto the Warrens. The Mikes also look ahead, speculating on where the franchise might go from here. With the Warrens' story concluded, will The Conjuring Universe reinvent itself, double down on spinoffs, or finally find a fresh case worth haunting? What did you think of the film? Did you scream with glee or boo at the ghosts? Let us know in the comments below!

Synopsis Paranormal Investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga think they are retired from ghost busting, but just when you think you're out, the demons pull you back in. The Smurl family in Pennsylvania start experiencing malevolent supernatural happenings after the grandfather gives a terrible birthday gift to the second oldest daughter. A broken mirror. Gee thanks Grandpa. The hauntings ramp up and soon it is apparent that a demon is infesting the house. The Warrens reluctantly engage with the Smurls and soon find out that the demon has actually lured them into a trap. Review of The Conjuring: Last Rights This is the ninth installment in the Conjuring Universe films, 11th if you include Wolves at the Door and Curse of La Llarona. In my opinion, if you've seen one, you've seen them all. That's not to say that this movie is bad. This movie along with all the other conjuring movies is competently made, maintains a consistent style, and has good acting. My criticism is that like the other films, this one prioritizes atmosphere and technique over substance. A beef I have with these movies is that they all suffer from what I call spooky house syndrome, where every house is dimly lit with 25 watt bulbs, and is suffering from a concerning amount of mold damage and electrical problems. Are they trying to scare us with ghosts or the horrors of home ownership? Similarly, the script is competent, but surface level. I can't tell you anything about the personalities of any of the characters outside of the tired tropes of “the protective father”, and the “brat sister”. What the film does well is display some of the most professional turning around acting I've ever seen. After four films as Lorraine Warren, Vera Farmiga has perfected the art of slowly turning her head for effect. It works so well at establishing the tension that they do it about 178 times in this film. The film makers know you are coming for tension and jump scares, so that's what they prioritize here. There are some really great scenes of creepy dolls, whispered voices, and foreboding darkness that are masterclasses in technique. However they are all interchangeable and do little to move the story forward other than just increase the intensity. Score 6/10

The Conjuring returns in the fourth and final installment of the franchise and it feels like a natural continuation thanks to the return of Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren. After watching the movie last night, in my opinion, the movie is terrifying, emotional, thrilling, pure horror magic and it's a must-see epic conclusion. Rebecca and I went into a deep conversation about her role in the movie, some behind the scenes secrets, and what it was like to film a movie based on a true haunting. What she had to say about all of that is justly remarkable. The details given in this interview explain a lot about the haunting and what actually happened. Brace yourselves for a phenomenal interview with gifted and wonderful Rebecca Calder as she delivered one of these best roles in The Conjuring Universe. In my humble and honest opinion, the ‘Smurl Case' is the darkest in the series because in the 1980s the whole country was on edge with everything going on: serial killers, more hauntings being reported across the United States, The Berlin Wall, and much more. Senses were heightened and spirits are drawn to that.

September's going to be a busy month, we can tell already. We took a week off at the end of the summer but we're coming in hot to start the fall here at Breakfast All Day. Supposedly "The Conjuring: Last Rites" is the final film in the franchise -- it says so right there in the title! -- but nothing ever really ends. This is once again the scariest case Ed and Lorraine Warren have ever taken, something to do with a haunted mirror. You've seen it all before, but Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are committed to the bit as always. In theaters. Then we review both Spike Lee's "Highest 2 Lowest" and Akira Kurosawa's "High and Low," the 1963 film that inspired it. The new one stars Denzel Washington as a music industry titan fighting a kidnapping scheme; Toshiro Mifune played a shoe company executive in the original. They have similar bones but are extremely different in how they tell their stories. The Kurosawa film is one of his greats, and Lee's latest is his most purely entertaining movie in a while. (At least one of us thought so.) You can catch "Highest 2 Lowest" on Apple TV+, while "High and Low" is on HBO Max and The Criterion Channel. Finally, we did a lengthy Movie News LIVE! Lots to talk about with fall festival season beginning, plus new trailers including "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," and the gross use of AI to complete Orson Welles' "The Magnificent Ambersons." Join us every Friday at Noon Pacific at our YouTube channel. Thanks for being here! Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/

In this unnerving installment of Byte, we sit down with Ben Hardy and Mia Tomlinson—stars of The Conjuring: Last Rites—for a Zoom interview provided by Warner Bros. The actors portray Tony Smurl and Judy Warren, a real-life couple who moved into a duplex in West Pittston, Pennsylvania, only to face a series of escalating paranormal events: foul odors, slamming doors, dragged furniture, phantom voices, unexplained bruises—and something far more sinister lurking in the shadows. Hardy and Tomlinson share what it was like to speak directly with the real Tony and Judy, and how those conversations shaped their performances. They reflect on stepping into the emotionally charged world of the Conjuring franchise, working alongside horror legends Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, and collaborating with director Michael Chaves, whose joyful energy helped balance the darkness of the story. Patrick Wilson is looking for names that will do well through low economic growth. “We're always looking for relative value,” he says, including through demographic demand, such as senior housing needs. He looks at how investors can use REITs to diversify their portfolios. He's also looking at how cloud service providers are spending “astounding” amounts on AI and real estate opportunities through that lens. He also looks under the hood at back-to-school sales and which shopping centers could benefit.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.
