The Conner & Smith Show

Day 25 – Episode 175: Insidious (2010)On Day 25 of The Conner & Smith Show's 31 Days of Halloween, I'm flying solo with Insidious (2010) — a film I like and respect well enough, even if I sometimes mix it up with The Conjuring. And honestly, who could blame me? With James Wan directing, Leigh Whannell writing, and Patrick Wilson starring, the overlap is real. Still, Insidious stands on its own as a stylish, eerie descent into the world of astral projection and haunted dreams. The film's use of sound, pacing, and surreal visuals make it a standout in modern horror — even if the infamous red-faced demon will forever remind me a little too much of Darth Maul.Support The Conner & Smith Show on Patreon here:

It's a weird one this week. Lauren is here for a quick rundown of Roofman, but her technical difficulties cute her a hair short. Then Kevin and Andrew run with Tron: Ares, The Conjuring: Last Rites, Black Phone 2, and I Like Me. Lauren had a chance to get out to the theater this week and, despite needing to hop off the podcast early this week, gives us a pretty great rundown of the movie. It's based on a true story and stars Channing Tatum as an almost lovable criminal sho makes camp inside a Toys R Us while on the run from the police. As you'd expectm the film takes some liberties with true events, but it's very close to fact and Tatum gives what might be the performance of his career. It seems to deserve all of the praise it's been getting, so get out there and catch it if you can! After the internet deems Lauren's time done for the evening, the mic is passed to Andrew who reviews Tron: Ares. Here's the thing… it's really not as bad as it is being made out to be. Is it perfect? No. Is it better than Legacy? Probably? It's hard to say for sure, but it's certainly got more going for it than the recent press would suggest. That said, the biggest letdown is the lead, played by Jared Leto, which never helps a film succeed. That being said, if you enjoyed the first two Tron movies, you might really enjoy this one. Sticking with sequels that are less than stellar (though this time more in quality than just reviews), Kevin discusses The Conjuring: Last Rites. This film is a perfect example of what Roofman avoided. The longer this franchise has gone on, the further it's strayed from the facts. It even manages to paint the Warren's (played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson) as incredibly kind and giving, glossing over some truly terrible parts of their past. On top of that, the haunting used for this film is so vastly different from the original story, including a conjuring mirror (the actual name) that was not involved at all. This movie feels more like a cash grab than a sequel and is really only worth watching if you're looking to complete the film series. Andrew starts to right the ship with his review of Black Phone 2. This one is the best film of the 3 sequels reviewed so far and definitely keeps the ball rolling from the first film. We lean more into the supernatural with this one, but it ups the drama and really does a great job drawing you in. The performances are all solid and we are given a return of a great villain. Kevin's fears have all been assuaged and he is definitely excited to catch this when it streams.  The guys close the show out on a light note, discussing the new documentary about John Candy, I Like Me. If you were not alive or under a rock, then maybe, somehow, you don't know who John Candy is. but for anyone else, this doc is essential viewing. It's a great telling of the life of a wonderful man, told by those who knew him the best. It's the story of struggle, success, love, and sadness. There isn't a ton that we can say that the doc can't say better, so if you have Prime, go watch this right away. As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. This week on Friday Night Frightfest, we're tackling a horrifying real-life case that has inspired decades of terror! We are bringing our extensive deep dive into the Conjuring Universe to a chilling conclusion by comparing the final main installment of the cinematic saga, The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025), with an older, made-for-TV movie based on the very same haunting: The Haunted (1991). The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025) Directed by Michael Chaves, The Conjuring: Last Rites is set to be the final chapter featuring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren. Based on the infamous Smurl haunting case from Pennsylvania, the film chronicles what is considered the Warrens' final significant case, where a seemingly quiet family home becomes the epicenter of a relentless supernatural siege. This installment promises a blend of atmospheric horror, high-stakes investigation, and an emotional farewell to the iconic investigators. The Haunted (1991) Directed by Robert Mandel, The Haunted is a chilling made-for-television film that also dramatizes the Smurl family's ordeal. This cult classic stars Sally Kirkland and Jeffrey DeMunn as the afflicted couple (Janet and Jack Smurl), with Stephen Markle and Diane Baker portraying the Warrens. Released decades before the Conjuring universe began, this film delivers a gritty, faith-driven, and often surprisingly graphic portrayal of the long-term, devastating effects of demonic infestation on a family. Join us as we analyze two radically different cinematic interpretations of the same real-life paranormal case. And with this episode, we officially conclude our comprehensive journey through the entire Conjuring Universe film series! Thank you for joining us for every demonic possession, haunted doll, and terrifying nun. Spoilers start around 5:26

Greg Alba, Tara Erickson & Roxy Striar step into darkness with The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025), the latest—and reportedly final—installment in the Conjuring cinematic universe. Directed by Michael Chaves (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) and written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, this film brings back Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren for one last case. In Last Rites, the Warrens come out of retirement to investigate the horrifying case of the Smurl family in Pennsylvania—a haunting that pushes them to their limits, both professionally and emotionally. Mia Tomlinson joins the cast as the adult Judy Warren, whose evolving psychic powers play a major role in the conflict. Ben Hardy appears as Tony Spera, Judy's partner and eventual ally in facing the supernatural threat. Meanwhile, Rebecca Calder and Elliot Cowan portray Janet and Jack Smurl, the couple whose home becomes the battleground for malevolent forces. Some of the most talked-about, chilling scenes include the mirror's sinister presence, manifestations of ghostly entities within the Smurl home, intense confrontations with demonic forces, and Lorraine's psychic visions that test the limits of her strength. The trailers tease that this installment is the “darkest” yet in the franchise, with a demon that holds personal vendettas and forces the Warrens to draw on every ounce of faith and terror. As the franchise bids farewell to Ed & Lorraine on screen, Last Rites delivers emotional weight, supernatural horror, and a climactic confrontation meant to close the chapter on their storied investigations. In “The Conjuring: Last Rites”, Ed and Lorraine Warren have worked over a thousand cases as spiritually guided paranormal investigators, helping save people from demonic forces. That doesn't mean they've seen everything and this latest case might be the one that breaks them. This is the real-life Smurl case in suburban Pittsburgh, where the introduction of a possessed mirror into their home, also introduces evil spirits. In addition to that, the evil spirit within the possessed doll, Annabelle, continues to haunt Ed and Lorraine's daughter. Is it worth going to the theater to find out what happens next? Watch this episode to find out! “The Conjuring: Last Rites” stars Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Mia Tomlinson, Ben Hardy, Rebecca Calder, Elliott Cowan, Kila Lord Cassidy, Beau Gadsdon and Molly Cartwright. Support the showFeel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

On this episode we examine The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025), the supposed final chapter in the mainline franchise. Directed by Michael Chaves, the film dramatizes the infamous Smurl haunting while bringing Ed and Lorraine Warren back for one last supernatural battle. We look at how Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga anchor the story with their reliable performances, and how Judy Warren (Mia Tomlinson) steps into a more central role. But does the film rely too heavily on recycled jump scares and familiar beats? And does Last Rites deliver the emotional closure a franchise this influential deserves—or does it leave us wondering if the series has run out of true scares?   We are joined by Sara with Paranormal in Pennsylvania to talk about the real life investigation that the movie is based on. This week on a special Now Showing episode of Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes take a look at "The Conjuring: Last Rites" (2025), the final chapter for Ed and Lorraine Warren. After just completing their YouTube Lead Up series on the mainline The Conjuring films, Mike Field and Mike Butler appreciated how the film gave the Warrens a proper send-off, bringing closure to their story after more than a decade of haunting cases. But while the emotional wrap-up for Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga's characters worked, the rest of the film left them wanting more. The family at the center of the haunting, the scares themselves, and even the demon driving the possession all feel pushed to the background, as the focus shifts almost entirely onto the Warrens. The Mikes also look ahead, speculating on where the franchise might go from here. With the Warrens' story concluded, will The Conjuring Universe reinvent itself, double down on spinoffs, or finally find a fresh case worth haunting? What did you think of the film? Did you scream with glee or boo at the ghosts? Let us know in the comments below!

Synopsis Paranormal Investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga think they are retired from ghost busting, but just when you think you're out, the demons pull you back in. The Smurl family in Pennsylvania start experiencing malevolent supernatural happenings after the grandfather gives a terrible birthday gift to the second oldest daughter. A broken mirror. Gee thanks Grandpa. The hauntings ramp up and soon it is apparent that a demon is infesting the house. The Warrens reluctantly engage with the Smurls and soon find out that the demon has actually lured them into a trap.  Review of The Conjuring: Last Rights This is the ninth installment in the Conjuring Universe films, 11th if you include Wolves at the Door and Curse of La Llarona. In my opinion, if you've seen one, you've seen them all. That's not to say that this movie is bad. This movie along with all the other conjuring movies is competently made, maintains a consistent style, and has good acting. My criticism is that like the other films, this one prioritizes atmosphere and technique over substance. A beef I have with these movies is that they all suffer from what I call spooky house syndrome, where every house is dimly lit with 25 watt bulbs, and is suffering from a concerning amount of mold damage and electrical problems. Are they trying to scare us with ghosts or the horrors of home ownership? Similarly, the script is competent, but surface level. I can't tell you anything about the personalities of any of the characters outside of the tired tropes of “the protective father”, and the “brat sister”.  What the film does well is display some of the most professional turning around acting I've ever seen. After four films as Lorraine Warren, Vera Farmiga has perfected the art of slowly turning her head for effect. It works so well at establishing the tension that they do it about 178 times in this film. The film makers know you are coming for tension and jump scares, so that's what they prioritize here. There are some really great scenes of creepy dolls, whispered voices, and foreboding darkness that are masterclasses in technique. However they are all interchangeable and do little to move the story forward other than just increase the intensity.  Score 6/10

Then we review both Spike Lee's "Highest 2 Lowest" and Akira Kurosawa's "High and Low," the 1963 film that inspired it. The new one stars Denzel Washington as a music industry titan fighting a kidnapping scheme; Toshiro Mifune played a shoe company executive in the original. They have similar bones but are extremely different in how they tell their stories. The Kurosawa film is one of his greats, and Lee's latest is his most purely entertaining movie in a while. (At least one of us thought so.) You can catch "Highest 2 Lowest" on Apple TV+, while "High and Low" is on HBO Max and The Criterion Channel. Finally, we did a lengthy Movie News LIVE! Lots to talk about with fall festival season beginning, plus new trailers including "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," and the gross use of AI to complete Orson Welles' "The Magnificent Ambersons."
