It's time for one of those huge episodes. Well, it's a four parter anyways. 1990 was a damn fine year for horror movies. Unfortunately though, once again, there is no iron clad masterpiece amongst them. Just a stack of really decent films. But, what do I think was the very greatest horror movie that came out during 1990? Well, here we have the top 10. The worst 10. A slew of also rans. Some awesome mates. Some special guests. Several pints of beer and a 6+ hour running. This is 1990, A Year In Horror. It's a pretty long journey this one, part 3 of 4 in fact. A group in Pennsylvania hole up in a farmhouse in an attempt to survive against rampaging undead feasting for their flesh. Night of the Living Dead is the classic zombie apocalypse movie from one of the greats, George A. Romero. Romero helped inspire what zombie movies are today and it's clear that the way this film portrayed a macro view of a zombie apocalypse set the stage for how films are utilizing survivor struggles in a post-apocalyptic world today. This was our first time watching the movie and although we had some mixed reviews, we all agreed the film is influential. Does the film hold up to current zombie movies or is it a product of its time? For our landmark 200th episode of Another Goddamn Horror Podcast, we welcome back independent horror powerhouses Sophia Cacciola and Michael J. Epstein for a deep dive into one of the most debated topics in horror: the politics of the genre. This conversation was sparked by Damien Leone's recent controversial comments about the role of politics in horror movies and in his films specifically. We unpack not only his take, but the broader history of political commentary in horror, from the subversive messaging of George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead to the revolutionary spirit of modern indie horror. Sophia and Michael bring their unique perspectives as filmmakers who blend horror, science fiction, and political themes into their work, making this discussion one of the richest and most thought-provoking we have ever had. We talk about how horror has always been political, why filmmakers should not shy away from social commentary, and how some of the most terrifying films are deeply tied to the cultural fears and struggles of their times. From slashers to creature features to psychological thrillers, we explore how horror reflects and challenges society, and why ignoring the political nature of the genre misses the point entirely. If you love independent horror films, horror film analysis, political horror movies, or are just obsessed with what makes horror tick, this is an episode you cannot miss. Packed with smart insights, fiery debates, and deep love for the genre, it is the perfect way to celebrate 200 episodes of horror podcasting. horror podcast, best horror podcasts, political horror movies, Sophia Cacciola interview, Michael J. Zombies, Consumption, and Satire in Capcom's Dead Rising (Routledge, 2024) explores the relationship between video games and satire through an in-depth examination of Capcom's Dead Rising series, which alludes to, recontextualises, and builds upon George A. Romero's filmic satire on American consumer culture, Dawn of the Dead. Proposing a taxonomy of videoludic satire, this book details how video games can communicate satire through their virtual environments, their characters, their audio, the way they frame the passage of time, and the outcomes of in-game choices that their players can make. By applying this taxonomy to the Dead Rising series, this book presents a compelling case for how video games can function as instruments for social commentary and indicators of ideological tensions. This unique and insightful study will interest students and scholars of media studies, video game studies, satire, visual culture, and zombie studies. When there's no more room in Hell…THE DEAD WILL PODCAST!This week on *The Rotten Horror Picture Show*, Clay and Amanda are taking a trip to the Monroeville Mall to talk about George A. Romero's 1978 horror classic *Dawn of the Dead*, a movie that changed Clay himself, and zombie cinema, forever. It's got biting social satire, gruesome practical effects, and an absolutely relentless sense of dread. And, of course, it takes place in a shopping mall—one that might as well be *Hell on Earth* as far as I'm concerned. You think I'm walking into a mall after watching zombies shuffle through JC Penney? Not a chance. I don't even do curbside pickup.I know people love *Dawn of the Dead*. I know it's a classic. I know it's one of the most important horror films ever made. But let me tell you something—I saw this movie when I was way too young, and I have *never* set foot in a shopping mall since. Not once. Not a single store. No supermarkets, no corner shops, nothing. You think I'm being dramatic? Try watching hordes of gray-skinned, dead-eyed freaks stumbling through a shopping center at the age of eight and tell me it doesn't rewire your brain forever. Oh, and it's not just malls. You think I'm walking into a grocery store? Have you *seen* what happens when the looting starts in this movie? Absolute chaos. Nope. I grow my own vegetables. I raise my own chickens. I trade with my neighbor for whatever else I need. You can keep your fluorescent-lit zombie death traps. Anyway, Clay and Amanda are braver than me, so they're diving deep into this horror masterpiece. If you've got the guts to listen, tune in. Just don't invite me shopping afterward. I'll be staying *far* away. And be sure to hit up patreon.com/thepenskyfile to hear their companion coverage of the Zack Snyder remake!

From recognized classics (George A. The first half of the show has a weirdly Sonic feel as Ryan watched Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Jocelyn found Sonic in her Two Point Museum. Quickly moving away from the blue blur, Jocelyn finds a lot of fun in this business simulation game from Two Point Studios. Ryan continues his movie thoughts with George A. Romero's Resident Evil, a documentary about the failed Resident Evil film adaptation from legendary zombie director George A. Romero. Closing out what we played, Jocelyn started her adventures in Avowed. In the news, we go over the latest Pokémon Presents, 8Bitdo releases a follow up to their best controller offering, A Minecraft Movie got a final trailer, and Monster Hunter Wilds becomes Capcom's fastest selling game in just 3 days.
We delve into the 90s and fondly discuss George A. Romero this week. We watched the new documentary George A. Romero's Resident Evil. Did we learn anything new? Well, that's a little debatable. Listen to our thoughts and an update on Lou finally playing the Dead Rising Remaster on Steam Deck. In other news, we have an update to Last of Us Season 2, House of the Dead 2 has a remake demo out on Steam, and we now have a premier date for The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2... And it looks like AMC will run it opposite Last of Us Season 2... Bold move! Will it work? The post ZAMP 325 – Romero's Resident Evil appeared first on Zombies Ate My Podcast.
10 years after the ground-breaking Night of the Living Dead, George A. Romero returns with Dawn of the Dead. Jordan and Stefan watch this mall movie classic and see how the scares hold up. Also, Stefan might get fixated on the Brown Derby Steakery & Luv Pub for some reason.
This week, Jeff and David debate the advantages and life-threatening disadvantages of keeping a service monkey in the house. Ella may be housebroken, but she's also homicidal in George A. We celebrate two years of Bring Me The Axe! with this good long look at the movie that changed everything. Initially dismissed as drive-in schlock and the copyright was botched upon release, Night of the Living Dead would eventually find its way to spotlight as the horror movie that set the pace for horror in the 1970's and introduced the world to what is, arguably, the most popular movie monster of all time: The Romero Zombie. We look at the production history, the players, it everlasting legacy, and the social conditions of the 60's that informed its extremely grim outlook. Produced in 1968 by George A. Romero and John Russo at the same time that they were producing commercials for Calgon and Heinz as well as eduational shorts for Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, Night of the Living Dead was a compromise meant to raise money more effectively to make not the movie that they wanted to make, originally, but any movie, period. The world is richer for having it. It's a brand new season! This time, Jordan and Stefan are watching George A. Romero's Living Dead films, starting with 1968's groundbreaking Night of the Living Dead – the film that invented the zombie movie. Will it hold up, given the flood of zombie content since then? Let's find out.
