We are back! Had big plans for Spooky Season this year but health, vehicle nonsense, family, and general exhaustion at the state of things in the US had other plans. It was an absolute pleasure talking with Clark Collis about his new book Screaming and Conjuring on the last episode and to follow it up we've brought back an incredible guest and we're diving back into the work of one of the undisputed Masters of Horror™. A few years ago we covered Romero's debut film and foundational masterpiece The Night of the Living Dead with Filmspotting's Josh Larsen. Romero's Dead movies are something we'd like to revisit sometime here at The Substance but today we're looking at a long hidden gem from early in his career that only recently became widely available, The Amusement Park.Commissioned by The Lutheran Society of Western Pennsylvania as a PSA on the perils of aging in America (especially as a non wealthy White), Romero decided to boldly make the project his own and instead of an after school special with talking heads discussing the difficulties that our senior neighbors face, he turned in something surreal and terrifying. With minimal dialogue the film conjures up the horrors of aging in an individualistic capitalist society: steep economic cost, difficulties with transportation, not being taken seriously by the general public, red tape accessing medical care, predatory assisted living facilities, and more. It's not a fun time but it's a visceral experience and one that stirs up questions worth asking related to what we owe to our more elderly neighbors. Crear un ambiente es una de las capacidades más poderosas que una persona puede desarrollar. No se trata solo de decorar un espacio o poner música de fondo. Crear un ambiente es establecer una atmósfera donde algo pueda florecer. Cada palabra que repetimos, cada actitud que sostenemos y cada decisión que mantenemos con constancia termina moldeando el entorno en el que vivimos. Por eso, cuando Dios bendijo al ser humano en Génesis 1:28 y le dijo: “Llenen la tierra y gobiernen sobre ella”, no le estaba dando solo una tarea, sino una identidad: la de creador de ambientes. Donde pones tu presencia, algo cambia. Tu forma de hablar puede crear paz o tensión. Tu manera de trabajar puede generar excelencia o desorden. Tu actitud diaria puede inspirar fe o sembrar desánimo. Jesús estableció 5 perfiles ministeriales sobre los cuales levantar su iglesia. No fue una estructura humana, fue un diseño divino. Cada ministerio representa una parte del carácter de Cristo y, juntos, reflejan su plenitud en la tierra. Los apóstoles establecen fundamentos y dirección. Los profetas traen visión y alinean el corazón de la iglesia con el de Dios. Los evangelistas mantienen viva la pasión por alcanzar a los que aún no conocen a Jesús. Los pastores cuidan, acompañan y restauran. Y los maestros profundizan la verdad y edifican con conocimiento. Cuando uno de estos perfiles falta, la iglesia cojea; cuando todos operan en unidad, el cuerpo se fortalece y crece con equilibrio. Por eso Pablo dice en Efesios 4:13: “Hasta que lleguemos a la plena y completa medida de Cristo.” El propósito no es tener títulos o jerarquías, sino reflejar la plenitud de Cristo en comunidad. “La creación está esperando la manifestación de los hijos de Dios…” (Romanos 8:19) Hay cosas que solo tú puedes ver. Detalles que otros pasan por alto, pero que a ti te inquietan. Eso no es casualidad: es el reflejo de tu llamado. Cuando algo dentro de ti se mueve al ver una necesidad, una injusticia o un desorden, no es crítica… es propósito tratando de manifestarse. Porque lo que Dios te permite ver, no es para que juzgues, sino para que respondas. Cada hijo de Dios tiene un color, una expresión única del corazón del Padre. Pero a veces ese color no brilla porque hay bloqueos internos: El miedo a destacar, que apaga tu luz para no incomodar. La comparación, que te hace pensar que otros colores valen más que el tuyo. La desconexión, cuando servimos sin comunión, y el color pierde su origen. Una iglesia sana no uniforma los colores… los integra. No busca que todos sean iguales, sino que cada uno refleje una parte distinta del carácter de Cristo. Porque el Reino no se construye con copias, sino con tonos auténticos. Tom Savini came up with a solid take on Romero's signature film, which basically invented the zombie movie back in 1968. There's a lot of bickering and boarding in the 1990 Night Of The Living Dead, but there's also better acting than in the original. The newer one is arguably more intense as well. The recently-departed Tony Todd and stuntwoman Patricia Tallman make for a strong team out in that country house that's both besieged by zombies and filled with human in-fighting. The 1977 murder of Father Rutilio Grande sent shockwaves through El Salvador. The 48-year-old Jesuit priest was an outspoken champion of the poor in the deeply divided central American nation. In the immediate aftermath of his murder, the Archbishop of San Salvador, Oscar Romero, took the unprecedented step of holding just one single mass, ordering all other churches in his archdiocese to cancel theirs. Romero also refused to attend any government functions. Father Grande was one of the first priests to be killed by security forces in the years leading up to the bloody Salvadoran civil war. His murder marked a turning point as the church became increasingly involved in promoting social justice, and other priests became more outspoken against the government's repression of dissent. Mike Lanchin has been hearing from Gabina Dubon, who worked with Father Grande in his rural parish, and to theologian and author, SisterAna Maria Pineda.
