In this .5 episode (the longest point-5 we've done to date), we offer up 6 subjects of previous Radical Research episodes and take a look at their activities since we last put our spotlight on them. (As we explain at the beginning, the sound quality is rough this time, as Hunter is still reeling from Hurricane Helene's effects on his household's technology.)Note I:The Radical Research Patreon page is now set up and ready for your patronage. We are offering tiered subscription levels for those who want a set-it-and-forget-it donation option. As ever, if you choose to support us, we are humbled and grateful! patreon.com/RadicalResearchPodcast Note II:All past Radical Research episodes can be found here, where you can also find Jeff's Peter Steele and Fates Warning books…and more to come soon! Radicalresearch.org Music cited in order of appearance:Hail Spirit Noir, “The Road to Awe” (Fossil Gardens, 2024)Hammers of Misfortune, “Ghost Hearts” (Overtaker, 2022)Manes, “End of the River” (Pathei Mathos, 2024)Diskord, “Cogged Pother” (Bipolarities, split with ATVM, 2024) Xysma, “Midnight Call” (No Place Like Alone, 2024) Kayo Dot, “Get Out of the Tower” (Moss Grew on the Swords and Plowshares Alike, 2021) Radical Research is a conversation about the inner- and outer-reaches of rock and metal music. This podcast is conceived and conducted by Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn. Though we consume music in a variety of ways, we give particular privilege to the immersive, full-album listening experience. Likewise, we believe that tangible music formats help provide the richest, most rewarding immersions and that music, artwork, and song titles cooperate to produce a singular effect on the listener. Great music is worth more than we ever pay for it.

Yes, you are seeing correctly, Toby Driver! We go out of 2023 with a bang! Toby Driver is one of these few artists who can connect Black Metal fans, Jazzers, Avantgardists and people from various other far-apart genres because he has that understanding of music that reaches beyond genres, sounds and structures. Something that some people might call avantgarde in the sense of “letting the song dictate where it goes” but for Toby that is not what the term stands for. And therefore we focused on that notion, that term - “Avantgarde”. In what turned out to be a totally improvised interview we found out a lot about it, in my opinion. Check out this in-depth interview with Toby and remember - we go out with a bang, we go in with a bang, so be sure to check back tomorrow!

We're back to our time travel again this month, heading back to 2006 where we'll be exploring our favourite songs from the year Pluto had it's planetary status cruelly ripped from it's icy mountains. We discuss Pop, Folk, Post-Metal, Emo, & Whatever the hell Scott Walker was doing at that point. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.

Toby Driver is one of the most engaging and important musicians currently active.  His resume is astounding, his persistence is unmatched, and his work is always challenging, fresh, and most importantly, inspirational and enjoyable.  Toby may be best known for being the leader of the often confounding Kayo Dot, but his music spans many genres, bands and projects.   I sat down with Toby to discuss and listen to some of these bands that perhaps are lesser known than Kayo Dot.  We listen to a track from the upcoming Kayo Dot record on Prophecy Productions, as well as songs from Alora Crucible, Blood Mist, and a few others.  We also get into subjects such as touring, show attendance, and the European metal scene. So, please pass the aux to Toby, and join us in exploring the many facets of this man's career.   https://kayodot.bandcamp.com/ -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. -------------------- https://www.facebook.com/hatepod.music/ https://www.instagram.com/i_hate_music_podcast/ Email and listener suggestions to: hate.pod.music@gmail.com Donations to support our podcast: paypal.me/hatepod #ihatemusicpodcast **I Hate Music is an Earth in Sound Production** https://www.earthinsound.org/

Toby Driver’s path to the present has been circuitous and inscrutable, which is to say, in keeping with music he has written over the last 25 years. His work in Maudlin of the Well, Kayo Dot, and as a solo artist has encompassed metal, chamber...

Here is the 95th installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring an interview with Toby Driver of Kayo Dot, Vaura, and maudlin of the Well. "Experimental", "progressive" and "avant-garde" are the ways Toby Driver's music is usually described. With his bands Kayo Dot and maudlin of the Well - as well as the music he's released under his own name - the prolific songwriter has crossed boundaries and created music that goes beyond the typical genre conventions of "metal" or "prog rock". I spoke with Toby about his music school education, his approach to songwriting and composition, and the upcoming Kayo Dot album Blasphemy. We also discussed his last "solo" album They Are The Shield and the final maudlin of the Well album, Part The Second. My thanks to Toby for speaking with me, and to you for listening. Kayo Dot is a very important band to me, so it was an honor to welcome Ron Varod onto the podcast.  Ron is a multi-instrumentalist who is in Kayo Dot, Sabbath Assembly and performs solo under the name Zvi.  Zvi was on a tour across America supporting his new record "Deer Pink" and stopped in to share some interesting music and perspectives.  Join us as we talk about Ulver, the pros and cons of drum machines, music production and Karaoke. "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. Closing music by Zvi.    https://www.facebook.com/hatepod.music/

For our first foray into the live podcast medium, we are joined by our old friend and collaborator, Toby Driver. He was the very first guest on the podcast back in 2013, and when we pulled the plug back in 2015, he was the last. For this episode, Toby is accompanied by String Noise (Conrad Harris & Pauline Kim Harris) to present some of his recent ballads. Moody, gothic songs, reminiscent of Current 93, Nick Cave and of course, Kayo Dot. Toby!

Kelly Moran is an exceptional pianist and composer originally from Long Island, now based in Brooklyn, NY. Her current work focuses on performances for both prepared and unprepared solo piano. A student of 20th century composition, her output contains healthy amounts of lyricism and dissonance, beauty and black metal aesthetics. For today's conversation we get into a lot of it, from Cage to Krallice, Sakamoto to Kayo Dot. Check it.

Happy New Year to all and I'm back with another installment of the Nature Strikes Back series with an episode focused on Killer Cat and Killer Dog movies. The episode begins with some updates on my trip back to the burgh and a congratulations to one of my fellow podcasters. This is followed by some film making updates and the return of the new segment within a segment, The Top 5 (Mr. Show is coming back!). The main theme is broken up into two parts Killer Cats and Killer Dogs. I start the Cat segment with some updated thoughts on the conventions of the sub-genre, where once again we'll notice some recurring theme's and plot points. I then transition into my thoughts on the Killer Cat movies watched and how many of them had a Gothic feel to them (thanks to folklore, superstition, Edgar Allen Poe and the independent nature of cats). Moving onto Killer Dog movies you'll find that the main narrative force in nearly all of them is the dedicated/family protector image typically associated with dogs. The dog movies tried much harder to incorporate the family entity as the main protagonist. Both Killer Cat & Dog movies use the unlikeliness that our companions could turn on their masters and wreak havoc in our lives. This episode is a little lite on the news but as festival season begins expect more in that department. The music choice for this episode is the enigmatic Kayo Dot, with a song that's part goth rock, part prog rock, mixed with 80 horror film score vibes. Finally I finish off the episode with my ratings for the movies watched this episode and a preview of some upcoming shows. Thanks again and until next time...

On this episode, Ross and Justin obliterate cultural boundaries by playing rock-paper-scissors, discussing the weather, and debating which American TV remakes are better than the British ones. Ah yes, they also play some music. You’ll hear tracks from O, Fallujah, Godflesh, Open Mike Eagle, Fucked Up, Kayo Dot, The Twilight Sad, and Sol Invictus. Enjoy!
