Ooooooh shit! It's been a wild season of things that happened. We're gonna take a little break right now. It was supposed to be for one thing, but that thing didn't happen so we weren't gonna take a break but now there's this whole other End Of Days pandemic thing so we're gonna take a break anyway, at least until the Days start again. But we weren't gonna let you go without engaging in that nerdiest of nerd activities; RANKING! We're going through all the stories we've covered and we're assigning them absolute values in comparison to one and other. Whatever we say, that's the final say. Seth is almost totally right and Peter is a little less right than Seth, but we're both pretty right and you should change your opinions accordingly. We'll see you again if society doesn't collapse. Peter and Seth were invited to pitch for a comics anthology of stories inspired by Bram Stoker's classic novel, Dracula! It's a look inside the creative process as the two of us talk about what kind of story we'd like to do.

Whoa, it's a climactic moment here, bro! This is the last story we are gonna cover this season, bro! It's a big moment for Hellboy, bro, cuz he's gotta really put that Beast Of The Apocalypse shit to bed, bro!

Oh man, shit is getting real for our boy! What's up with that hand? Why is Hellboy on Earth? I dunno, probably nothing good. Anyway, what movies do you keep going back to? I forgot to mention Thor Ragnarok. I think I've watched that four or five times in the two years since it came out. So much awesome crammed into one movie. Cate Blanchett vamps so hard in that movie and we don't even talk about it cuz we're so busy talking about Piss off ghost and Hulk's butt and Jeff Goldblum and Led Zeppelin but she's a great villain and, oh man, so is Clancy Brown's Surtur. Yeah. This podcast is not about Thor Ragnarok but maybe it should be?

Don't do drugs and perform occult rituals at the same time, maaaaaaaan. If this podcast ever gets big enough where we can set up panels at cons we'll get Mignola and Grant Morrison on stage together and hash this whole drug/occult thing out. One story is about drugs and the other is about a hallucination but the episode is mostly about LEGOS I think.

Imagine the Street Fighter 2 voice saying "Japan" and then Hellboy is in Japan. And the other player is a swarm of flying cannibal heads. Right? The real question is, is this story racially insensitive? As two white guys, we feel like we need to address the question. Also as two white guys, we have no answers. And now, a note from Peter: "I think the episode still sounds good overall, but maybe just put in a note that we had some minor technical issues while recording on my trash laptop, so there might be a skip in the audio here and there."There you go. Now you know which one of us writes these stupid descriptions.

Have you ever been to Norway? Me neither but Hellboy has! In the story we talk about today, which is called King Vold, that is where Hellboy goes, to Norway, in this one, today.Cool!

This week we talk about the short story The Nature Of The Beast. The first time we see some of a particular flavor of British mythology that will become important later on.

Wake a devil. Which devil? Does the title refer to Hellboy? The vampire guy? Both? We totally forget to address this as we deep dive into the mythological references, the pieces of vampire lore and the seemingly endless joy of this truly classic story. Mike Mignola scripts his first long form story and we start to get pretty ok at delivering solid commentary and insight. Is this where Hellboy gets good? Yes. Is this where the podcast gets good? Peter thinks so. Seth hasn't listened back yet.

Two great monsters that monster great together! This week we talk about two short stories from Hellboy: The Chained Coffin and Others, officially numbered volume three but the stories take place all over Hellboy's timeline. We're finally getting a sampling of Mike Mignola's writing here, a little taste of the short story form that he has utterly mastered. There's a lot of folklore to discuss with these two well worn creatures from the past. We're also going to see some long term arcs start to build as the Baba Yaga is going to come back in a Big Bad way down the line. As for Iron Shoes...well, just listen to the episode.

We're never gonna talk about John Byrne again. Maybe. This is it, the conclusion of Seed Of Destruction, our deep dive into the earliest Hellboy stories is complete! This book is good, it's just not as good as we've come to expect from Mike Mignola's world. Next week we cover The Baba Yaga and Iron Shoes! Two short stories with more bearing on Hellboy and the BPRD's future than you might guess!
