Wayne's Comics Podcast #756: Interview with Jonathan Hedrick

In Episode 756, it's time to welcome back to the podcast a creator whose comics we particularly enjoy, and that's Jonathan Hedrick from Brackish! Jonathan has a Kickstarter happening right now to support issues #1 & 2 of Brackish, so we talk about how these comics were created, who the characters are, and what else Jonathan has coming! Here's how Brackish is described: "Two families have lived for generations on separate sides of a Florida swamp. The Tappers control the freshwater area where they make their moonshine, and the Saltzmans control the saltwater side from which their family fortune has grown from the abundant tourism. A truce was made a century ago to end their constant feud over the brackish part where their lands unite. But when the youngest Tapper son and youngest Saltzman daughter fall in love, the truce is broken and both sides of the swamp will never be the same again." This project has already met its crowdfunding goal, but you can still contribute by pledging until this Tuesday, August 4, at 10:00 p.m. EDT. Dave Kellett returns from his first-ever college reunion with a full heart — and a renewed appreciation for old friends, running jokes, and the occasional listener washing dishes through the cold open. From there, Brad and Dave dig into one of the trickiest parts of writing comics: how much work should the reader have to do to “get” the punchline? Using Brad's motorcycle-jump-over-a-ravine metaphor, they discuss why wider joke “canyons” can create bigger laughs, why shorter jumps can feel merely “technically funny,” and why the best cartoonists learn how to build strong launching ramps while understanding that every reader brings a different landing ramp. Also in this episode: How to show music in a silent medium, why semi-realistic comics should still embrace comics iconography, a quick San Diego Comic-Con update, Bluesky's expanded image carousel, and why obsessing over analytics can become a form of creative procrastination. Topics covered in this episode include: Writing punchlines that require inference from the reader Brad's “motorcycle jumping a ravine” metaphor for humor Why wider joke gaps can produce bigger laughs The difference between “funny” and “technically funny” Why some jokes land for one reader and miss for another How audience literacy, life experience, and context affect comedy Why “it took me a second” can be a feature, not a bug The danger of making every joke too obvious Why memorable comics often take bigger comedic swings Why being someone's “top three cartoonist” matters more than broad mild approval The difference between newspaper-era comics and webcomics-era audience building Dave's San Diego Comic-Con booth update The free ComicLab pin for listeners at Booth 1228 Bluesky expanding post image limits from 4 images to 10 How the new Bluesky carousel can help sequential artists How to communicate piano music in comics Why floating music notes are not “too cartoony” for semi-realistic comics Using established comics iconography instead of reinventing the wheel Why comics can suggest music but rarely reproduce the experience of music How manga and anime use visual language more freely Using musical notation as a visual “spice,” not the whole dish Why analytics can become creative avoidance Whether it matters how quickly a comic reaches its maximum views Why “magic number” thinking can distract from improving the next comic Why creators should spend less time dusting bookcases and more time making better comics What's better? Welcome to another episode of Las Platicas, a show hosted by Comadres y Comics, where we meet with creators and friends to talk about upcoming projects, events and all around awesome news in the comic community. We've had the pleasure of talking with Javier Hernandez over the years, and every conversation reminds us why he's been such an important voice in independent comics. Through stories rooted in Latino culture, history, and mythology, Javier has spent decades creating characters and worlds that reflect communities too often left out of the mainstream. Now he's back with a Kickstarter campaign that expands upon the El Muerto legacy with Man from Mictlan #2, the next chapter in his action-packed series inspired by Mexican mythology. Today, we talk with Javier about where the story goes next, what readers can expect from the campaign, and why independent, culturally authentic storytelling continues to matter in today's comics landscape. Time for a great doubleheader this week in Episode #752! It all starts with David Steinberger and Chip Mosher, who have created "the new home for digital comics and manga" at neonichiban.com, then concludes with the return of Thomas Marvelli from A Signal From Space on Kickstarter now! Both David and Chip are leaders at Neon Ichiban, the next evolution in digital comics and manga. It's described this way: "This isn't about better technology—it's about a better future for comics." We talk about how the site came to be, what you can find there and when new books are available, as well as what the two of them are making happen that will continue to move the comics industry into the future. Then everything wraps up with the return of Thomas Marvelli, who is soon concluding another successful Kickstarter project, this time for A Signal From Space. Tom catches us up on all that's going on with Another Door Comics, including this excellent science-fiction mystery. Here's this book's description: "An astronaut presumed dead for nearly forty years sends an impossible signal home and returns unchanged." This week, Brad and Dave discuss one of the easiest traps for independent creators to fall into: Outsourcing important business or creative decisions to reader polls. Audience feedback can be useful, but when creators ask readers to steer decisions about Patreon tiers, Kickstarter rewards, publishing strategy, or creative direction, they often get noisy, contradictory advice that can lead them away from their own best judgment. Topics covered in this episode include: Why readers are experts in consumption, not creation The danger of asking your audience to make business decisions for you Brad's cautionary tale from his early days as a newspaper designer Why negative comments carry more psychological weight than positive ones The difference between listening to readers and asking readers to decide Why feedback should be treated as a compass, not a steering wheel How polling readers can create factions and resentment among backers Why creators should rely first on their own instincts, goals, and judgment The value of seeking advice from trusted peers and experienced professionals Why no single expert — including ComicLab — should be treated as the only authority Dave's hierarchy of advice: Heart and mind first, peers and pros second, passive reader feedback third Erika Moen's thoughtful counterpoint about social-media assistants How a social-media assistant can protect creators from harassment, criticism, and burnout The difference between a social-media assistant as a partner versus a replacement Plans and possibilities for future live ComicLab events Dave's San Diego Comic-Con appearance at Booth 1228, including free ComicLab pins for listeners A listener question about “boomer humor” and whether it should be taken as an insult The difference between old-fashioned joke structure and out-of-touch subject matter Why traditional setup-and-punchline comedy still works How Reddit comments often reflect meme culture more than thoughtful criticism When repeated criticism might be worth filtering for a useful grain of truth Why creators should protect their confidence while staying open to thoughtful feedback You get great rewards when you join the ComicLab Community on Patreon$2 — Early access to episodes$5 — Submit a question for possible use on the show AND get the exclusive ProTips podcast. A lone rocket escapes the destruction and races through space, ultimately landing on a small farm in small-town Kansas. A kindly couple steps with trepidation toward the alien craft as the door opens. Out steps a man named Jor-El, the sole survivor of the planet Krypton! As Jor-El fits in to his new home, he realizes that he can help the world, not just with his newfound powers, but with his intellect as well. Witness how a Man of Steel and Science saves the world!" We talk about both books with Kenny as well as Operation: Iron Coffin, which is coming soon from IDW. You can check out his website at this link. If you haven't already been buying comics with his name on them, be sure to check them out after you listen to our fun conversation! With both Brad and Dave nominated for awards this year, the guys spiral into a surprisingly deep conversation about awards, marketing, ego, and whether creators should plaster “award nominee” stickers all over their books. Later, they tackle a listener question about using 3D models, digital sets, and reference material in comics production — leading to a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how both creators actually build comics pages in tools like Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop. Along the way, they discuss why imperfections matter in cartooning, how typography affects visual storytelling, and why “cheating” is often just another word for “working smarter.” Today's Show Should you put an award nomination on a book cover?
