The CELEBRATING SUPERMAN series continues with Eisner award winner MIKE CARLIN, the legendary group editor of Superman comics through the late 80s and 90s. During his beloved Superman tenure, Mike helped lead an all-star team of writers and artists, including the likes of John Byrne, Dan Jurgens, Roger Stern, Jerry Ordway, Louise Simonson, Jon Bogdanove, AND MORE. He oversaw such game-changing stories as THE DEATH/RETURN OF SUPERMAN story arc and spearheaded a number of creative decisions that have shaped the character and had major influence on not just the comics themselves but adaptations such as the 1990s Lois & Clark television series and even James Gunn's new film.In their conversation, Shawn and Mike discuss how Mike got into comics, what eventually brought him over to DC, why he and the Superman creative team decided to kill Superman, and an angry phone call from Harlan Ellison once the news of Superman's death hit the mainstream.Episode art illustrated by Jon Bogdanove and Dennis Janke, kindly provided by Mr. Carlin.

Host Anthony Desiato and guest Zach Moore (Always Hold On To Smallville) dig into the many adaptations of the comic book storyline THE DEATH AND RETURN OF SUPERMAN across time and media. They discuss how the iconic event — or aspects of it — have been adapted in novels (Roger Stern's THE DEATH AND LIFE OF SUPERMAN), radio (BBC Radio 1's SUPERMAN: DOOMSDAY & BEYOND), video games (THE DEATH AND RETURN OF SUPERMAN from Sunsoft), animation (2007's SUPERMAN: DOOMSDAY and the more recent two-parter), television (SMALLVILLE Season 8, SUPERMAN & LOIS Season 4), and film (BATMAN V SUPERMAN, ZACK SNYDER'S JUSTICE LEAGUE). Russ and Anne are back to finally put the original Hobgoblin story to rest. Roger Stern returns to right the wrongs done to his sinister son in "Hobgoblin Lives!". They also take a look at Goblins at the Gate, the original Green Goblin meets the original Hobgoblin...kinda. Russ also fills Anne in on what Hobby has been up to since these stories and what the future holds for this dynamic duo. All that and lots of laughs!

We start off an Avengers miniseries that features a great cast of Avengers, with fan favorite Roger Stern in the writer's chair! The cosmic storyline isn't great but the characterization is top notch!
In this episode, our-decade-by-decade series on Marvel's Thunderbolts (NOT the Thunderbirds, as Kevin erroneously calls them in the intro) continues as we discuss The Avengers: Under Siege – specifically, The Avengers #273-277 by Roger Stern and John Buscema! Helmut Zemo, the son of one of Captain America's greatest enemies, and a waaay-overstuffed Masters of Evil take over Avengers Mansion and begin systematically taking down Earth's Mightiest Heroes! Hercules, the Prince of Power, lies at death's door! Monica Rambeau, the new Captain Marvel, is trapped in the Darkforce Dimension! And the Black Knight … is taken out rather easily. This action-packed epic has it all: Squabbling supervillains! A quick stopover in Paris! Tons of property damage! And a galaxy of guest stars including Ant-Man! Paladin! The Shroud! And Doctor Druid! But is all of that enough to mount a hostile takeover of that impregnable fortress known as … The Comics Canon? Recommended in This Episode: · Fantastic Four #177: “Look Out for the Frightful Four!” · Star Trek: First Contact · The Suicide Squad Next episode: At long last! We discuss Thunderbolts: Justice, Like Lightning…! featuring Thunderbolts (1997) #1-6! WHO are the Thunderbolts? And WHAT is their connection to the Masters of Evil? ALL WILL BE REVEALED! We start off discussing a Patsy Walker centric annual that has some fun art and a surprise group of villains for a magic centered story. And the Avengers are kind of in it as well! And then we look at a special 1.5 issue by Roger Stern and Bruce Timm that tells an untold tale of the original team!
Its three issues by Roger Stern and Mark Bagley that team up two of the most fun Avengers (when they're together), Wonder Man and the Beast! So this must be a slam dunk, right? Well, maybe not, unless you read and loved Wonder Man's solo series.

This week, Jared and Teladia outline why Death in comics has become a meaningless marketing tactic that is slowly losing its effectiveness. They use the Death of Superman and Death of the Justice League as examples of when comics used death as a marketing tactic. "The Death of Superman" is a crossover story event mostly featured in DC Comics' Superman-related publications. The crossover, which originated from editor Mike Carlin and writers Dan Jurgens, Roger Stern, Louise Simonson, Jerry Ordway, and Karl Kesel, began in December 1992 and lasted until October 1993. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is a 2024 action-adventure shooter game developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by Warner Bros. Games. Based on the DC Comics team Suicide Squad, it is a spin-off of the Batman: Arkham series, and a follow-up to Batman: Arkham Knight. Discussed in this episode 1. The origin of the death and rebirth trope 2. How the death of Superman broke death in comics 3. Why Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League failed as a marketing tactic 4. When death was used well What do you think? What broke death in comics? Is there a time where death was used well? In the 1980s, Jim Shooter was editor-in-chief at Marvel Comics for nine years. During his run as editor, Marvel produced Chris Claremont and John Byrne's run on the Uncanny X-Men, Byrne's work on Fantastic Four, Frank Miller's series of Daredevil stories, Walt Simonson's crafting of Norse mythology with the Marvel Universe in Thor, and Roger Stern's runs on both Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man. He wrote the iconic Marvel event Secret Wars which was tied into a toyline. Secret Wars led to the creation of the Spider-Man black costume. It was one of the biggest crossovers to date and a storyline that is expected to be the focal point of the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Six. This episode was recorded live at Fan Expo Philadelphia 2023 and includes commentary on the state of comic books and the growth of the superhero genre. Shooter also comments on the black costume eventually turned into the iconic villain Venom.
Yes, THE Roger Stern! It took months of work to get this storytelling master to sit down for an interview, and we hope you agree that it was worth it. We dug into as much of his career as we could, starting with the fanzine CPL with Bob Layton, moving through the Charlton Bullseye, and on to his big break as editor and then writer at Marvel. And that's only the first 10 minutes! Of course, we had to get to Captain America, Incredible Hulk, Avengers (original and West Coast varieties), and the Amazing Spider-Man, including co-creating Hobgoblin with JRJR. Next we take another swing through the Triangle Era of Superman, including Death of Superman and Reign of the Supermen. Finally, we end on his later Marvel collaborations with Kurt Busiek on Iron Man and Avengers Forever. It's a wild ride, Banditos! Hope you enjoy._____________________Dollar Bin Bandits is the official podcast of TwoMorrows Publishing.
