This interview (with a different "One Quick Thing" segment) originally aired in September of 2022.We're off to the see the Wizard with this REPLAY! At 62, Doug Jones is as busy as ever, playing The Baron on FX's What We Do in the Shadows, Saru on Star Trek: Discovery, and returning to the role of Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus 2. But you might be most familiar with Doug for his singular roles in heavy prosthetics -- as Abe Sapien in Hellboy and Hellboy II, as The Amphibian Man in The Shape of Water; as Pan and the Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth. Doug's physical presence -- once something he'd have wished away -- is a huge part of what has made his performances so rich and memorable. And one early source of inspiration and identification was Ray Bolger's Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz. Then, Jordan has one quick thing about the terrifying Art the Clown.***With Jordan Crucchiola and Doug Jones.
Welcome to the Munsons at the Movies podcast. Each episode we delve into the filmography of a randomly selected actor. In this episode, we explore the life & career of Doug Jones. Best known for his roles as Abe Sapien in the Hellboy films, Amphibian Man in The Shape of Water (2017), and Fauno/Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth (2006), Jones has built a career as the actor who portrays the creature in the creature feature. Joined for our annual Halloween episode once again by the wonderful Stephanie Malone of the Morbidly Beautiful podcast, we discuss how he built his very unique career over the years, how films like The Shape of Water couldn't exist without him, how he expands our understanding of what acting could be, and we liken him to Devin Hester when it comes to scoring him on the Munson Meter. How does he rank on the Munson Meter? Listen to find out!
In 2004 Guillermo Del Toro brought us the cinematic introduction of Hellboy, a demonic entity summonded from hell but who fights for the forces of good. Played pitch perfectly by Rob Pearlman and joined by the likes of Doug Jones as Abe Sapien and Selma Blair as Liz Sherman the first movie deals with stopping the Nazi's (lead by Rasputin) from opening a portal into another dimension to bring forth Ogdru Jahad, a cthulhu like squid monster. All in all, pretty good. Pretty good we reckon. Welcome to the Spill Your Guts Halloween Special! The Man Behind The Masks: Doug Jones Talks About What It's Like To Truly Embody A MonsterFrankenstein's monster, the wolfman, Nosferatu (or Count Orlok to be precise) and the Phantom of the Opera. All iconic monsters of early cinema played by equally iconic actors such as Max Schreck, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney and Lon Chaney Jr. These performances have stood the test of time not only for their inspired makeup and design but because the actors portraying them found the heart in the monster. Whether it's Karloff's touching humanity as Doctor Frankenstein's shunned creation or Max Schreck's spidery skulking as one of cinema's earliest vampires, these are the monsters that paved the way for countless monsters throughout film history. In the current landscape of cinema monsters there is one man who casts a very, very long shadow. He has portrayed so many memorable characters that will endure that it's hard to count. That actor is Doug Jones. For some, Doug's first stand out role will be as Billy Butcherson in the Halloween classic Hocus Pocus. For others, it's Abe Sapien in Guillermo Del Toro's hit Hellboy. For Kevin Lane, it's his dual roles as the Faun and Pale Man in Del Toro's dark fairy tale masterpiece Pan's Labyrinth. And it's in Doug Jones that Del Toro found his muse. Doug's almost supernatural way of communicating through movement what most actors could not say in a monologue has created a celebrated ongoing collaboration between one of genre cinema's best filmmakers and best actors. This episode is very special because not only do we adore Doug, but host Kevin Lane had the opportunity to sit down with Doug in person in Toronto. Listeners of Spill Your Guts may know that most of our conversations are recorded remotely. There isn't a better guest for us to have had the opportunity to speak to in the flesh! Doug and Kevin discuss his childhood self-consciousness about his body, his early mime work and sort of meeting Christopher Walken on the set of Tim Burton's gothic masterpiece Batman Returns, his deliciously evil role as a cannibal in Larry Fessenden's episode of Fear Itself and his many collaborations with Del Toro, including their best picture Oscar winning film The Shape of Water. As much as Doug has portrayed characters in many magical films, there is nothing more magical then the man himself. Welcome to wonderous world of Doug Jones! Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

This week's episode is all about the unexpected hero from a place we would never suspect. This week we're taking a look back at the film 'Hellboy' from 2004. Written and directed by Guillermo Del Toro, 'Hellboy' is a superhero/action film that is based upon the comic book story originally created by author Mike Mignola. In the film, a demonic beast-turned superhero known as Hellboy secretly works to keep the world safe from paranormal threats with his team, the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense. Is this one of director Guillermo Del Toro's finer works? We discuss this and more on our episode this week! Plot: At the end of World War II, the Nazis attempt to open a portal to a paranormal dimension in order to defeat the Allies, but are only able to summon a baby demon who is rescued by Allied forces and dubbed "Hellboy". Sixty years later, Hellboy serves as an agent in the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, where he, aided by Abe Sapien, a merman with psychic powers, and Liz Sherman, a woman with pyrokinesis, protects America against dark forces.
Kae Wilson from the Call Us Casters podcast sits down with Perry to discuss Hellboy II: The Golden Army. An original story written by Gulliermo del Toro, it's a movie that unfortunately didn't do as well as the first Hellboy film and ultimately resulted in an incomplete trilogy. We revisit Ron Perlman's excellent performance, Doug Jones stepping up to take on the voice of Abe Sapien, and how this movie proves del Toro needs to make a steampunk film. The DVD release is expected in February. Mike also talks about Hellboy's beginnings, the upcoming new mini series with Duncan Fedrego, An Abe Sapien mini series, more BPRD and the pulp inspired hero Lobster Johnson. You'll hear about Mike's art influences, collaborating with artists like Guy Davis, Richard Corben, and filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro Also a lengthy tease about HELLBOY 2 , which had just begun pre-production.

In episode 45 of Game Design Unboxed: Inspiration to Publication we talk with James Hewitt & Sophie Williams about their co-design Hellboy: The Board Game published by Manic Games. This co-op Dark Horse comic book inspired game is filled with minis used to explore ever evolving case based maps. Players are investigating cases while fighting their famous foes playing as BPRD members, such as Hellboy, Abe Sapien, and Roger the Homunculus. In this episode the designers discuss how they really captured the feeling of Mike Mignola's world famous comic series. Also, how building in “hooks and levers” into the base game made future expansions possible as well as adding a ton of replayability. They even discuss the “tea-party problem'' where they realized the game shouldn't be more than a 4-player experience because the co-op nature would suffer. This is a great first episode to kick off the third season of Game Design Unboxed! Featuring: James Hewitt & Sophie Williams - Guest Danielle Reynolds - Host

In 2004 Hellboy proved to us that a superhero can look a little different than we might expect. Guillermo del Toro's love and respect for Mike Mignola's iconic character was evident in this groundbreaking movie. And who would have expected that there was an actor that was perfectly suited for the role. Ron Perlman's portrayal made it seem as if Hellboy was made with him in mind all along. Jay and Josh provide a commentary track but never even once attempt to censor themselves by saying 'heck' in this Superhero Suite Super Special.

SPECIAL GUEST: David from Seriously Pointless Conversations about Culture! Find his episodes and social media here: S.P.C.A.C. (Seriously Pointless Conversations About Culture) (podbean.com) Welcome back as we present our second episode in the Misfits, Outcasts and Loners series--Hellboy II: The Golden Army! We thought that having a sequel as the number two slot in our new series is fitting as we return from the soul-searching of Nomadland to the metropolis again, battling ancient evils and fantastical beasts as Hellboy, Liz, and Abe Sapien (along with the entire BPRD) fight to keep our world safe from those who want to take it for themselves. To help us tackle this discussion, we have on a very special guest: David from SPCAC! He is a fellow podcaster, and a comic nut who ranks Hellboy at the top of his favorites list. He breaks down some of the history of the character for us before we jump into this movie that has some nostalgia for us all. If you remember, we mentioned we were doing this one in Jesse's Birthday episode. Earlier this month the nominees for the 2017 Eisner Awards were announced at the Comic-Con International website, and as Andy and Derek like to do every year, they're devoting a full episode of The Comics Alternative to a discussion of the nominations. On this week's show, the Two Guys give their impressions of the various nominees, both as a whole and on a category-by-category basis, making observations and trying to understand any trends underlying this year's selections. However, Derek and Andy resist the urge to play armchair quarterbacks, so they don't second-guess the six-member panel of judges or focus on what they would have chosen if they had been on the selection committee. As diligent comics scholars, they judicial and discerning in their commentary. At the same time, they don't shy away from pointing out a few inconsistencies and a few head-scratchers when trying to make sense of this year's nominations. You can find a complete list of the 2017 Eisner Award nominees below. So as you listen to this week's episode, please feel free to scroll down and follow along!
