S8E50 went out live from the TSORR Studio on Myoli Beach on 18 December 2025 at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio and Bulldogs Radio. This show marks the 8th anniversary of The Story of Rock and Roll radio show, and it is basically 'the story of' The Story of Rock and Roll. It was a lot of fun and covered major world and musical events. I had to try to cram eight years of life and music into three hours. I went through the start at Mix FM in Midrand, the beginning and the end of Rebel Rock Radio, and all things in between. I totally ran out of time. There were some amazing memories and some amazing music on this one. And a fitting end to Rebel Rock Radio. Make sure you tune in to Bulldogs Radio for all the live shows in future. This week on Heavy Metal Tones, we dive headfirst into one of Iron Maiden's most ambitious and visionary albums — Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. More than just a record, this was Maiden's full-blown prog masterclass, where galloping riffs met keyboards, concepts, and a darker, more mystical atmosphere. In this episode I break down the album track by track, exploring what makes Seventh Son such a pivotal moment in Maiden's career, from the seamless flow of the songs to the bold decision to fully embrace a concept album. We go behind the scenes as well, looking at the writing, production, and the risks the band took in pushing their sound into more progressive territory — and why those risks paid off in a huge way.Whether you've worn out your vinyl copy over the years or you're revisiting this classic with fresh ears, this is a deep exploration of an album that still stands tall as one of Iron Maiden's most creative and influential releases. Crank it up and join me as we uncover the magic, mythology, and metal that make Seventh Son of a Seventh Son truly timeless.

“There were 2 years of my life that I was dead certain I was gonna be a breakdancer…” The release of THE ULTIMATE SIN on January 24, 1986, the 4th studio album from OZZY OSBOURNE (and the 2nd & final album to feature Jake E. Lee on guitar) is definitely one of the heaviest albums of Ozzy's 80's output. “I've got the magic!” With heavier riffs, crazier guitar pyrotechnics, and darker lyrical themes like nuclear annihilation, THE ULTIMATE SIN blends in just the right amount of glam while still maintaining the essential heaviness that is a prerequisite for any classic OZZY album. While perhaps a bit “more Blizzard than Diary”, it's a dramatic improvement from Bark At The Moon and is overall heavier and more focused. “Oh yeah, the ‘dunniguhh'? Yeah…I remember that one.” Get ready for some metal news and current events, understand that “most people, if they have a mustache” can only look like one of three different people (or a combination of all three), and accept the fact that “the bur-duh-dur is what got ‘em”. Step into the sands of time with this week's Scary Spirits Podcast, where Greg has once again chosen a Hammer classic for our archaeological review. This time, we delve into the 1964 film “The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb”—a film that dares to awaken ancient mysteries and forbidden tombs. Join Karen and Greg as they excavate the film's chilling narrative, uncover its historical inspirations, and sip on a specially crafted “Mummy's Night Out” cocktail—a libation worthy of the pharaohs themselves. If you crave the allure of Egypt, the shadow of curses, and the timeless fascination of mummies, this episode is your gateway to cinematic archaeology. Tune in now and discover why this Hammer horror remains a relic of terror and intrigue. Mummy’s Night Out Cocktail • 1 oz orange flavored liqueur• Purple sanding sugar or decorator sugar crystals• Ice• 1 oz white chocolate-flavored liqueur• 1 oz vanilla vodka• 1/2 oz Irish cream liqueur• Orange food color, if desired Instructions: Pour 1 tablespoon of the orange liqueur onto saucer or small plate. Onto another saucer or small plate, sprinkle sanding sugar. Dip rim of each of 2 martini glasses into liqueur then into sugar to coat lightly. Fill cocktail shaker with ice. To shaker, add remaining tablespoon orange liqueur and all remaining ingredients. Cover and shake. Strain into martini glasses. Source: bettycrocker.com A Brief Synopsis: Greedy American Alexander King makes an excursion to Egypt, where he hopes that archaeologist Sir Giles Dalrymple and young assistant John Bray can help him unearth ancient treasures. But they eventually run into Adam Beauchamp, an accursed man with a long family history of hauntings. Adam’s mere presence is enough to awaken mummy Ra-Antef, putting the entire expedition in grave danger. Some of the topics discussed and highlights of this episode include: Karen tells us about the Egyptian gods Bastet and Anubis. We learn about Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s famous “How Do I Love Thee” poem. Is there really a mummy’s curse? Greg makes a reference to an Iron Maiden song. Somebody needed to pick up the torch for hard rock and heavy metal with real grit and gusto and without a gimmick. Enter Who on Earth. The New Jersey outfit of Coosh [vocals], Pete Rizzi [bass], Johnny James Barone (guitar), Jimmy Kocha (guitar) and Howie Fallon [drums] — deliver a one-two punch of hard-hitting hooks and airtight instrumentation bolted down by pummeling grooves and piercing riffs. It all gestated from a question…“We wanted to fill in the blank of ‘Who On Earth is going to bring back good rock and metal?',” explains Pete. “We grew up on the new wave of British heavy metal and classic rock. We went through grunge and other great genres of metal. We wanted to resurrect the melodies, hooks, and guitar solos. We returned to our roots yet upgraded everything with modern production.”The group made their bones through countless gigs across the Tristate area in every dive bar and concert hall with a stage. Along the way, Andrew and Pete tore up venues as part of MadHaus, performing marathon covers. During 2021, the longtime friends chose to forego covers, hunker down, and compose an original album. The composing came easily, and in a short time, the founding fathers had 10 songs ready to go. To bring the record to life, the band hit the studio with none other than Mike Orlando (Category 7, Adrenaline Mob). Over the next year, the guys endured numerous COVID delays as they recorded with Orlando behind the board as producer, engineer, and “stunt” guitarist. Nodding to everyone from Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica to Rush, Alice In Chains, and Tool, they placed storytelling in the spotlight.“The New Jersey heavy rockers bring their signature grit and power to the 1979 classic, adding punchy riffs, thunderous drums, and raw energy while honoring the spirit of the original.“Somebody needed to pick up the torch for hard rock and heavy metal with real grit and gusto without a gimmick. Enter Who On Earth. The New Jersey quintet—Andrew Couche [vocals], Pete Rizzi [bass], Howie Fallon [drums], Johnny James Barone [guitar], and Jimmy Kocha [guitar]—deliver a one-two punch of hard-hitting hooks and airtight instrumentation bolted down by pummeling grooves and piercing riffs. The band continues to pay homage to rock's past as they usher in its future on their latest EP, Smoke & Mirrors.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Before Operation: Mindcrime, there was this.Queensrÿche's 1984 debut The Warning is the album that almost didn't happen—at least not the way the band intended. While they were touring Japan, EMI executives remixed and completely rearranged their progressive metal masterpiece without permission, burying the band's weirdest, most ambitious material deeper in the tracklist. But even with corporate interference, The Warning stands as a pivotal moment in metal history: a Seattle band crafting something that sounded like nothing else in 1984, blending Iron Maiden gallops with Genesis-level prog complexity and Jeff Tate's otherworldly operatic vocals. In this episode, we break down why this debut matters—not just as a stepping stone to Mindcrime and Empire, but as a document of a band discovering their identity in real time. We debate whether it's a hidden gem or a rough draft, explore the label drama that reshaped the album's sequence, and dive into the tracks that reveal Queensrÿche's DNA: from the Maiden-esque power of “Deliverance” to the robotic sci-fi weirdness of “NM 156.” This is Double-A ball before the majors—you can see the talent, hear the potential, and witness five musicians isolated in Seattle creating something that would change progressive metal forever. If you love Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Fates Warning, or Dream Theater, this episode is for you.Episode Highlights0:00 – Intro: Poll results and how The Warning won the Metal Union vote5:23 – Album context: Queensrÿche in 1984—Seattle isolation and the progressive metal blueprint12:45 – “Deliverance” – The opening track that wasn't supposed to open the album18:32 – The EMI remix controversy: How the label rearranged the album while the band toured Japan24:15 – “NM 156” – The weird, jazzy, robotic prog odyssey that terrified record executives31:40 – Jeff Tate's voice at 24: Operatic range, theatrical character work, and why he's more than just “metal Bruce Dickinson”38:50 – “Take Hold of the Flame” – The anthem that hints at Operation: Mindcrime44:20 – Geography matters: Why being in Seattle (not L.A.) saved this band from breaking up51:10 – “Road to Madness” – Epic ambition or forced prog? Send us a textThe Rock Hall came in loud, messy, and unexpectedly moving—and we brought receipts. We open with a mea culpa that doubles as a manifesto: Iron Maiden belongs in the Hall. When you put their global sales, generational influence, and still‑feverish fanbase next to multiple inductees, the picture changes fast. From there we break down the night's sharpest highs and softest misses: Salt‑N‑Pepa's clinic in craft and energy, a Warren Zevon tribute that needed Werewolves of London, and Cyndi Lauper's command of a room that didn't always return the favor. We dig into the White Stripes' legacy with clear eyes: why Feist and Olivia Rodrigo's “We're Going To Be Friends” worked and why making “Seven Nation Army” about yourself doesn't. Jack White's speech lands like a love letter to small rooms and big risks, and we push back on the lazy “Meg can't drum” take—serving the song is a skill. Outkast's segment wrestles with tech issues, but Tyler, the Creator detonates “B.O.B.” and reminds everyone what modern hip‑hop virtuosity looks like. Then Soundgarden turns the room inside out: Taylor Momsen surprises, Toni Cornell devastates on “Fell on Black Days,” and Nancy Wilson powers through more malfunction to honor Chris Cornell's towering range and the band that bridged punk and Sabbath weight. We close by asking better questions of the Hall. What is “rock and roll” in 2025 if not attitude, risk, and reinvention across hip‑hop, punk, metal, pop, and alternative? If next year's first‑timer pool is thin, it's time to right some wrongs: Mariah Carey, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Wu‑Tang Clan, and long‑snubbed pillars like the Pixies, the Replacements, and Black Flag. Along the way, we unpack catalog sales, a smart theory behind the Oasis reunion, and why safe, templated finales shrink big nights. If you love strong opinions backed by facts and lived fandom, hit play. Then tell us who we got right, who we got wrong, and who you'd induct tomorrow. On this loaded podcast Guitar legend Warren DeMartini opens up about reuniting with Stephen Pearcy to perform Ratt's iconic catalog after years away from the spotlight. He shares stories about their renewed musical partnership (which began at the M3 festival), the telepathic connection that remains intact, and his time recording covers and original material during his hiatus. He reflects on Ratt's MTV heyday, the making of classic videos like 'Round and Round,' his brief stint with Whitesnake, and his special musical bond with guitarist Carlos Cavazo. Then, Slaughter's Mark Slaughter and Dana Strum discuss their busiest touring year ever with over 50 dates. They reveal surprising statistics about their hits, with 'Fly to the Angels' reaching over 100 million views across platforms, far outpacing 'Up All Night.' The duo shares emotional stories behind their music, including how 'Fly to the Angels' once prompted a murderer's confession and they reminisce about their Vinnie Vincent Invasion days, their transition to forming Slaughter, and the tragic loss of bandmate Tim Kelly. And last but most certainly not least, Don Barnes, the sole original member of 38 Special, joins Eddie Trunk to celebrate the band's 50th anniversary. He reflects on the group's enduring success, attributing it to their truthful songwriting and consistent live performances. He also discusses their new album 'Milestone' - their first in 20 years - featuring a duet with Pat Monahan of Train and shares fascinating stories about touring with Iron Maiden, Rush, and Bon Jovi in their early days, his relationship with the Van Zant family, and how MTV helped launch their career. In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with percussionist Chris DeChiara, whose musical journey spans from teenage rock bands to drum corps, classical training, and ultimately, more than two decades with the U.S. Navy Band in Washington, D.C. I first discovered Chris after hearing him on a Classical Breakdown episode, and I was blown away by his playing, his sound, and the way he talked about percussion. I reached out immediately, and I'm so glad he agreed to come on the show.Chris and I discuss how he found his way into classical music later than most, and how that discovery completely altered the direction of his life. We explore how drum corps shaped his sense of time and listening, as well as the pressure of performing high-level percussion parts night after night. He recounts the story of joining the Navy Band just before 9/11, and we discuss the weight and responsibility of performing military funerals and ceremonial duties at Arlington. We also delve into his book on Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, which originated from a graduate school paper and evolved into a comprehensive research project during the pandemic. Hearing how he approached the timpani part, the historical context, and the self-publishing process was fascinating. From there, we discuss what it truly takes to balance drum set and orchestral percussion, the challenge of leading time within a large ensemble, and the mindset shift required to blend, anticipate, and adapt depending on one's position on stage.Chris and I share a love of the Beatles, so of course, we dive into why those songs are so deceptively complex. Chris also fills me in on what his life looks like now: performing with the Alexandria Symphony, gigging with his long-running band Dr. Fu, playing in tribute acts (including an Iron Maiden tribute), teaching at Catholic University, and tackling a Britney Spears musical mainly played on a sample pad. This is a rich and wide-ranging conversation filled with great stories, thoughtful musical insight, and an inside look at a fascinating career in percussion. I had a great time talking with Chris, and I think you're going to enjoy this one.Thank you for listening. Look, it's really simple. The Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame hates and disrespects heavy metal. We don't. We believe that metal is one of the cornerstones in the history of rock n roll and we also need to point out the fact that it's one of the most globally-beloved genres of music. We think it's a crime that the bands highlighted in this week's playlist have been snubbed by the bluenoses and weenies that run the rock hall. Get them in! Is everyone ready for another musical number?!?! That's right, Julie brings out her songwriting skills and rusty vocal chords in order to cover the final story for Season 20, The King's Demons. We are so sorry for everyone who chose to rewatch these two episodes, but hopefully we give you a better time. Join us as Anthony, Reilly, AND Diana all have a marvelous time in overpronouncing their vowels, Julie continues to bemoan the fact that the BBC was even more cheap than usual, we all argue about the importance of the Magna Carta, and how we all wished that this was all the Meddling Monk instead of the Master. Oh, and Diana is able to point out why Iron Maidens are maidens (hint hint: there are at least TWO reasons). EPISODE 626 - Suzanne Parry - The Soviet Experience Through Historical Fiction, Pentagon Tour, Iron Maiden of StockholmRaised in a quiet rural corner of western New York State, I didn't always want to be a writer. I was, however, always surrounded by books. Bookcases in every room. Entire walls of them. My mother was an avid reader and regular trips to the library were part of my childhood. My stepfather was a creative writing professor and words floated through the rooms and into the nooks and crannies of that pre-Civil War era farmhouse. Books weren't my escape so much as they were part of my daily diet. At twenty I made a list of things I wanted to accomplish and “write a book” was on it. That list included both measurable things like “learn five foreign languages” and “complete a significant athletic achievement” and less quantifiable items like “make the world a better place.” During the Cold War of my high school and college years, I very much wanted to help reduce the possibility of conflict between the US and the USSR.I earned a bachelor's degree at Purdue University, and then continued my Russian studies at the Pushkin Russian Language Institute in Moscow. I studied Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, received a Master's in 1982 and started a career in public service with the US Department of Defense. My work in the Office of the Secretary of Defense focused on European security issues between NATO, Warsaw Pact, and neutral nations. While at the Pentagon I helped negotiate the Conference on Disarmament in Europe, the first security agreement of the Gorbachev era. At the Stockholm talks as we often called the CDE, a number of my European colleagues jokingly called me the “Iron Maiden of Stockholm” in a not altogether flattering reference to British PM Margaret Thatcher, the original tough-as-nails female negotiator. The many months I spent crafting an agreement with diplomats from thirty-five nations, sitting at a table alongside NATO colleagues and opposite Soviet and Warsaw Pact counterparts, was my great honor. After this heady time, I put most of my energy into raising a large family (requiring its own negotiating skills). Funny enough, having a family was not on that list and yet today I would say without hesitation that the most impactful (and most difficult) thing I've ever done is raise four children. I lived in several countries, including the former Soviet Union, Belgium, Sweden, Singapore, and Germany. Throughout adulthood I've been a committed runner. I've completed dozens of marathons in more than twenty countries, including the fifty-six-mile Comrades Marathon in South Africa. I eventually landed in the wonderful and welcoming city of Portland, Oregon as a single parent. There, I coached high school cross country and track at a large public high school before deciding it wasn't too late to dust off that forty-year-old list and write a book.I now divide my time between Portland and Washington, DC, but also travel for fun, for research, and best of all, to visit my children and grandchildren.https://suzanneparrywrites.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca
