Send us a textMatt Krahula is a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, producer, currently based out of Honolulu, HI.  He is the bassist for Grammy Nominated artist Henry Kapono, lead singer of The Nightmare River Band and one half of the Chamber Folk duo, Beyond Hope, with Canadian Singer Fiddler, Sierra Noble.  After years of touring the mainland and bouncing around the vibrant New York City music scene, Krahula uplifted his roots and decided to take his talents to sunny Waikiki.  Since 2018, he has established himself as one of the most in demand artists in Hawaii, with residencies at some of Oahu's most popular bars and clubs, and opening slots for major artists such as Silver Sun Pickups, Frank Turner, Mike Love, Jerry Santos, and Keola Beamer.  Krahula started his musical career at the Purchase Conservatory of Music, earning a Bachelor Degree in Classical Music Performance on Upright Bass. He has spent the last 15 years touring, writing and recording, playing over 500 shows with his band, and sharing the stage with acts such as Old Man Markley, The Last Bandoleros, Boy and Bear, Matt Simons, Tokyo Police Club, and Robert Ellis.  He has previously been nominated for an Independent Music Award for Best Alt-Folk song of the Year and has performed at Summerfest, SXSW, and CMJ to name a few. His music has been featured in 9-1-1 on Fox, American Pickers, Showtime's Gigolo's, Comedy Bang! Molly Giles is an award-winning fiction writer. Her first collection of stories, ROUGH TRANSLATIONS won the Flannery O'Connor Prize for Short Fiction, the Boston Globe Award, and the Bay Area Book Reviewers award. Four subsequent collections—CREEK WALK, BOTHERED, ALL THE WRONG PLACES, and WIFE WITH KNIFE, have also won awards, including the Small Press Best Fiction Award, the California Commonwealth Silver Medal for Fiction, the Spokane Short Fiction Award, and the Leapfrog Press Global Fiction Prize.  She published her first novel, IRON SHOES, in 2000, and twenty-three years later, published its sequel, THE HOME FOR UNWED HUSBANDS. Her memoir, Life Span (WTAW Press, 2024) opens when she is three years old, sitting in the front seat of a moving van as her father drives from San Francisco to their new home in Sausalito. Well-known editor and author of four story-collections and two novels, Giles referenced the journals she began writing at age nine to create a memoir filled with moments and thoughts from her eight decades so far. The Bay area is the backdrop for much of her life, although she spent fourteen years teaching in Arkansas. She delves into family relationships, husbands and lovers, siblings and children, teaching and editing, and the struggles of a being a single mother before women were accepted into the work force. In brutally honest prose, Molly dissects her life with a critical eye, never sugar-coating her failures or glorifying her successes, of which there were many. National Theater At Home on You Tube: Les Blancs by Lorraine Hansberry.   Bookwaves Carlos Ruiz Zafon, who died on June 19, 2020 in Los Angeles of colorectal cancer at the age of 55, burst onto the literary scene in 2001 with his novel, The Shadow of the Wind, first of an interrelated group of four novels titled The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, set in Barcelona, Spain, his birthplace. This interview, recorded in May, 2009, focuses on the second novel in the series, The Angel's Game.  The next book in the series, The Prisoner of Heaven, came out in 2012, and the final book, The Labyrinth of Spirits, was published in 2018. There were also four young adult novels, three published after this interview. Complete 54-minute interview.   Arts-Waves Rupert Everett and Richard Wolinsky. Rupert Everett in conversation with Richard Wolinsky, September 26, 2018 about the film he wrote, directed and starred in, The Happy Prince, about Oscar Wilde's final years in exile. Rupert Everett's film career took off with lead roles in the British films “Another Country” and “Dance with a Stranger” in the mid 1980s before his career took a nosedive when he came out as gay. He resurfaced in the late 1990s as a Hollywood star in the film “My Best Friend's Wedding,” a period that lasted a short time before roles again dried up. Shortly afterward, he began working on a screenplay about Oscar Wilde's final years, which finally has reached the screen as “The Happy Prince. The film stars Rupert Everett, who also served as director and screenwriter. Two great monsters that monster great together! This week we talk about two short stories from Hellboy: The Chained Coffin and Others, officially numbered volume three but the stories take place all over Hellboy's timeline. We're finally getting a sampling of Mike Mignola's writing here, a little taste of the short story form that he has utterly mastered. There's a lot of folklore to discuss with these two well worn creatures from the past. We're also going to see some long term arcs start to build as the Baba Yaga is going to come back in a Big Bad way down the line. As for Iron Shoes...well, just listen to the episode.

We're never gonna talk about John Byrne again. Maybe. This is it, the conclusion of Seed Of Destruction, our deep dive into the earliest Hellboy stories is complete! This book is good, it's just not as good as we've come to expect from Mike Mignola's world. Next week we cover The Baba Yaga and Iron Shoes!
