Two things you probably don't know: 1) your favorite museum probably holds human remains and 2) it's completely legal to sell human bones on the internet. Not surprisingly, those two things have caused a lot of controversy. In this episode, Tanya Marsh joins Ben for a conversation about recent developments in the legal-social-political nexus of dead bodies; the controversy surrounding the acquisition and treatment of human remains in American museums and what we'll simply call “the Harvard morgue case.”   Tanya Marsh is Professor of Law at Wake Forest University, where she specializes in the law of human remains. She is the author of The Law of Human Remains (2015) and co-author (with Daniel Gibson) of Cemetery Law: The Common Law of Burying Grounds in the United States (2015).   This episode was edited by Ben Sawyer.   Articles mentioned in this episode: Zachary Small, “Facing Scrutiny, a Museum That Holds 12,000 Human Remains Changes Course,” New York Times, Oct. 15, 2023.   Alyssa Shotwell, “Activists Took Over Museum After Victims' Bodies of the 1985 Philadelphia Bombing Found,” The Mary Sue, Sept. 15, 2023.   Abby Patkin, ”Group indicted for allegedly stealing and selling body parts from Harvard morgue,” Boston.com, June 15, 2023.   Tanya Marsh, “Is it Illegal to Sell Human Remains,” The Conversation, June 30, 2023.

Since we will be covering four more Inner Sanctum films in 2024 it was suggested that I might want to acquaint podcast listeners with some of the old radio shows. I love these wonderful horror and suspense tales but most folks have never sought them out. They are quite entertaining as examples of ‘Theater of the Mind' exercises and, as I explain in my introductions, the Inner Sanctum show may have been the starting point for a horror trope that persists to this day.  I have picked three interesting episodes that I think will give you a good idea of the tone the program trafficked in and there is even a performance from Boris Karloff to get us started! He is the main character in an adaptation of Poe's The Tell Tale Heart while Richard Widmark stars in the second grisly story about man's lust for immortality. The final story I chose because it fits the October season with the title A Corpse for Halloween. Enjoy! If you have any comments or suggestions thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. Thanks for listening and Happy Halloween!

Don't miss it next week. After we try those delicious treats, Matt covers the Broomstick stabbing, a local crime from 1963. Irene Wilson, stabbed over 50 times in her home around the small village of Broomstick in Calhoun County, West Virginia. Possibly of some note, Irene would have been about the same age as the number of times she was stabbed.

This movie is not for all tastes, but it IS for Drusilla and Josh. It's Singapore Sling: The Man Who Loved a Corpse by Nikolai Nikolaides. From wiki: “Singapore Sling: The Man Who Loved a Corpse (Greek: Singapore Sling: Ο Άνθρωπος που Αγάπησε ένα Πτώμα, tr. Singapore Sling: O Ánthropos pou Agápise éna Ptóma) is a 1990 Greek black and white horror underground art film directed by Nikos Nikolaidis and regarded as his magnum opus. Considered a difficult film to label while still managing to develop something of a cult following throughout the years nonetheless, it was shot in a bizarre manner somewhat resembling film noir or neo-noir and black comedy as well as the exploitation, thriller, and crime genres mixed with some elements of eroticism and horror with sex being used as a power game and received a theatrical release in Greece on 6 December 1990.[1][2] “Drusilla saw Almodóvar's double feature of shorts, Strange Way of Life and The Human Voice. She also saw: Dicks! The Musical. Josh writes the Darren Criss Halloween Show at A.C.T. in San Francisco. He watched Tod Browning's Freaks. Also mentioned: Under the Rainbow (1981), Fassbinder, Blonde Venus, Story Pirates, Lair of the White Worm, Ticket of No Return, Onibaba, Grey Gardens, Jean Genet's The Maids, Dadaism, Otessa Moshfegh, Pasolini, David Lynch, Pink Flamingos, Angel, and more! NEXT WEEK: Halloween Special Double Feature: Cronenberg's Naked Lunch (1991) and Henenlotter's Brain Damage (1988)Website: http://www.bloodhauspod.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.comDrusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/ Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/Joshua's Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/joshuaconkel.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkel
