In 2004 Guillermo Del Toro brought us the cinematic introduction of Hellboy, a demonic entity summonded from hell but who fights for the forces of good. Played pitch perfectly by Rob Pearlman and joined by the likes of Doug Jones as Abe Sapien and Selma Blair as Liz Sherman the first movie deals with stopping the Nazi's (lead by Rasputin) from opening a portal into another dimension to bring forth Ogdru Jahad, a cthulhu like squid monster. All in all, pretty good. Pretty good we reckon. This week's episode is all about the unexpected hero from a place we would never suspect. This week we're taking a look back at the film 'Hellboy' from 2004. Written and directed by Guillermo Del Toro, 'Hellboy' is a superhero/action film that is based upon the comic book story originally created by author Mike Mignola. In the film, a demonic beast-turned superhero known as Hellboy secretly works to keep the world safe from paranormal threats with his team, the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense.  Is this one of director Guillermo Del Toro's finer works? We discuss this and more on our episode this week! Plot: At the end of World War II, the Nazis attempt to open a portal to a paranormal dimension in order to defeat the Allies, but are only able to summon a baby demon who is rescued by Allied forces and dubbed "Hellboy". Sixty years later, Hellboy serves as an agent in the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, where he, aided by Abe Sapien, a merman with psychic powers, and Liz Sherman, a woman with pyrokinesis, protects America against dark forces.

This demon boy from Hell who was raised to become a protector of humankind only really cares about two things: Liz Sherman and his cats. But, work comes first... Hellboy, Liz and their friend, Abe Sapian must work together to defeat the mystic Gregori Rasputin who wants to raise the Seven Gods of Chaos and bring about the destruction of humankind. Join us as we discuss our first movie on the podcast, we explore the question which we have long pondered on the podcast: what makes a monster vs. what makes a man. We also debate on worth of the self-sacrificing hero in fiction and wonder about the possibilities of Hellboy partaking in…copulation…? Trigger warning: mentions of Nazis, self mutilation, capitivity, refusal of self, death, and isolation. After all, love makes us vulnerable and forces us to bare our monsters to another.

In this episode, a week ahead of the April 12 debut of the Hellboy movie, Curt and Kevin awaken ancient spirits to explore the origin of everyone's favorite wisecracking monster-hunter in 1994's Hellboy: Seed of Destruction by Mike Mignola and John Byrne, published by Dark Horse Comics! During World War II, the Russian psychic Rasputin conjures an otherdimensional being to help the Nazi war effort, resulting in the appearance of a young demon boy among Allied forces. Nearly 50 years later, that demon, now named Hellboy, is a paranormal investigator looking into the strange death of the man who raised him, Professor Trevor Bruttenholm. The case leads Hellboy (along with colleagues Abe Sapien and Liz Sherman) to a crumbling English manor where he faces hideous frog-men and the tentacled abomination known as the Sadu-Hem! Can our hell-spawned hero stop the mad monk from freeing the demonic Ogdru Jahad and unleashing apocalypse upon the world? And can he scale the mountains of madness to reach that graveyard smash known as … The Comics Canon?
