In 2004 Guillermo Del Toro brought us the cinematic introduction of Hellboy, a demonic entity summonded from hell but who fights for the forces of good. Played pitch perfectly by Rob Pearlman and joined by the likes of Doug Jones as Abe Sapien and Selma Blair as Liz Sherman the first movie deals with stopping the Nazi's (lead by Rasputin) from opening a portal into another dimension to bring forth Ogdru Jahad, a cthulhu like squid monster. This week's episode is all about the unexpected hero from a place we would never suspect. This week we're taking a look back at the film 'Hellboy' from 2004. Written and directed by Guillermo Del Toro, 'Hellboy' is a superhero/action film that is based upon the comic book story originally created by author Mike Mignola. In the film, a demonic beast-turned superhero known as Hellboy secretly works to keep the world safe from paranormal threats with his team, the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense.  Is this one of director Guillermo Del Toro's finer works? We discuss this and more on our episode this week! Plot: At the end of World War II, the Nazis attempt to open a portal to a paranormal dimension in order to defeat the Allies, but are only able to summon a baby demon who is rescued by Allied forces and dubbed "Hellboy". Sixty years later, Hellboy serves as an agent in the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, where he, aided by Abe Sapien, a merman with psychic powers, and Liz Sherman, a woman with pyrokinesis, protects America against dark forces.

This demon boy from Hell who was raised to become a protector of humankind only really cares about two things: Liz Sherman and his cats. But, work comes first... Hellboy, Liz and their friend, Abe Sapian must work together to defeat the mystic Gregori Rasputin who wants to raise the Seven Gods of Chaos and bring about the destruction of humankind. Peter and Seth were invited to pitch for a comics anthology of stories inspired by Bram Stoker's classic novel, Dracula! It's a look inside the creative process as the two of us talk about what kind of story we'd like to do.

Oh man, shit is getting real for our boy! What's up with that hand? Why is Hellboy on Earth? I dunno, probably nothing good. Anyway, what movies do you keep going back to? I forgot to mention Thor Ragnarok. I think I've watched that four or five times in the two years since it came out. So much awesome crammed into one movie. Cate Blanchett vamps so hard in that movie and we don't even talk about it cuz we're so busy talking about Piss off ghost and Hulk's butt and Jeff Goldblum and Led Zeppelin but she's a great villain and, oh man, so is Clancy Brown's Surtur. Yeah. This podcast is not about Thor Ragnarok but maybe it should be?

Imagine the Street Fighter 2 voice saying "Japan" and then Hellboy is in Japan. And the other player is a swarm of flying cannibal heads. Right? The real question is, is this story racially insensitive? As two white guys, we feel like we need to address the question. Also as two white guys, we have no answers. And now, a note from Peter: "I think the episode still sounds good overall, but maybe just put in a note that we had some minor technical issues while recording on my trash laptop, so there might be a skip in the audio here and there."There you go. Now you know which one of us writes these stupid descriptions.

Liz Sherman, president of Temple Shaaray Tefila, dishes on her favorite and least favorite part of being president (you may be surprised!), what she's excited about as TST celebrates its 175th anniversary (bet you can't guess!), and delivers a bit of TST history that made our jaws drop in the recording studio. Also in this episode: reflections on Black History Month and something Dr. King would want us to do today, the music of Jewish bluegrass group Nefesh Mountain, and a final thought about a man named Nachshon that'll leave you inspired in the weeks to come. 

This week we talk about the short story The Nature Of The Beast. The first time we see some of a particular flavor of British mythology that will become important later on.

Here's a story. Will this be the first Mignola scripted story we didn't like? Will Seth sing again? Will we have any successful segues? We recorded this a while ago and I honestly don't remember. Ah well. Guess we'll all have to listen to find out!

Happy New Year! What's your favorite werewolf? You'll never guess Seth's. Things get hairy in this weeks episode of the BPRDcast. Hellboy vs werewolves!

Yeah, it's The Corpse. Is it everyone's favorite Hellboy short story? No, because there are SO many awesome ones. Is it perhaps the most perfectly paced piece of short comic book fiction on this (right hand of) doomed Earth? Possibly. Ahhhhh, we had so much FUN with this. Join us.

Wake a devil. Which devil? Does the title refer to Hellboy? The vampire guy? Both? We totally forget to address this as we deep dive into the mythological references, the pieces of vampire lore and the seemingly endless joy of this truly classic story. Mike Mignola scripts his first long form story and we start to get pretty ok at delivering solid commentary and insight. Is this where Hellboy gets good? Yes. Is this where the podcast gets good? Peter thinks so. Seth hasn't listened back yet.

Two great monsters that monster great together! This week we talk about two short stories from Hellboy: The Chained Coffin and Others, officially numbered volume three but the stories take place all over Hellboy's timeline. We're finally getting a sampling of Mike Mignola's writing here, a little taste of the short story form that he has utterly mastered. There's a lot of folklore to discuss with these two well worn creatures from the past. We're also going to see some long term arcs start to build as the Baba Yaga is going to come back in a Big Bad way down the line. As for Iron Shoes...well, just listen to the episode.

We're never gonna talk about John Byrne again. Maybe. This is it, the conclusion of Seed Of Destruction, our deep dive into the earliest Hellboy stories is complete! This book is good, it's just not as good as we've come to expect from Mike Mignola's world. Next week we cover The Baba Yaga and Iron Shoes! Two short stories with more bearing on Hellboy and the BPRD's future than you might guess!
