Barry finishes up this series on elections and consequences. He talks about a few things we need to remember about people, what we must acknowledge about ourselves, and how these things should shape our faith in a God who knows all of that too. Scriptures: Heb 2:14-15, Matt 7
Barry begins a series about the interaction between populations and their leaders. In this episode he discusses what he has learned from election cycles since his young adult years, and the unfortunate truth behind Plato's great brute. As someone may rightly ask in any dog park, “Who is training whom, here?” Scriptures: […]

For this edition of the podcast the lads are being driven to drink. Not literally, because that would be irresponsible. No, this time the Sadmen had to find an album each that had a link to alcohol. Richard travelled back to Canada to pick up Nature Of The Beast, an album thought by many to be the finest hour of April Wine. Steve opted for the comfort of 1986 and the rock-lite Thrill Of A Lifetime by Carmine Appice vehicle King Kobra. Mark, ever the adventurer, went a little off-piste and turned up with Behind The Eight Ball (an Eight Ball being both a whisket cocktail and a drug cocktaIl. Apparently) from German power metal band Thunderhead. Let battle commence!
She's been a tough few months for Northland businesses and residents. First, we had the Brynderwyns closing. State Highway 1 over the Brynderwyn Hills is finally set to open ahead of Matariki weekend after 17 weeks and three days. Lots of diversions, lots and lots of trucks on roads that where they really, really shouldn't be, and the crews have been working as hard as they can, but it's been slip after slip after slip. They've been trying to clear those and strengthen the road and shore up the hills. And then yesterday, we had the massive power outage. Nearly 100,000 people spent the day without electricity in Northland after a transmission tower linking the region to the rest of the country fell over. And like, quite literally, fell over - collapsed. Power was restored to most of the region last night, but consumers were asked to conserve electricity and warned that their hot water cylinders would remain off while the amount of energy getting into the area was limited. Transpower said this morning that while power has now been restored to the majority of residential customers, full power would not be restored until over the weekend. Having a place in the Hokianga I'm used to power outages occurring, you know relatively often, but they're usually sporadic, they're usually easily resolved. It's a bit of fun camping until the power comes back on, not so much fun when you're a business that is utterly dependent on power. The transmission tower collapse, which happened in Glorit, about 45kms west of Warkworth, happened at the same time as another circuit connecting Northland to the grid was down for maintenance. So basically, the whole region was completely and utterly on its own. Northland MP Grant McCullum said this highlights how fragile the infrastructure in Northland is and he said it was the very last thing that Northlanders needed, which was a sentiment echoed by Darren Fischer, North Chamber CEO, Chamber of Commerce. “Spoke to some of our more regional business associations yesterday and how they described it is, this not the knockout blow for a lot of small businesses, it's certainly a standing 8 count. You know it could be very well one of the things that just keep piling on top of some of these small employers you know.” Yeah, it's tough. Thank heavens the Brynderwyns road will be open, thanks to NZTA, for Matariki weekend to give the businesses a much-needed boost. But is it just the nature of the beast? Is it the nature of nature, if you will? There's not much you can do when there are massive landslips, or is there? Should there have been more investment in shoring up the sides of the hills and strengthening the roads before you absolutely had to? Have we been putting infrastructure on the back burner right around the country, but for far, far too long? Putting it off where we can, generation after generation. This is not on one government; this isn't even really on one generation. Have we been taking infrastructure for granted? And now we're seeing the result of that. I mean Northlands suffering at the moment, but there'll be other regions of that you can be sure. When you are utterly dependent really on one road, one major highway in and out for the transportation of goods and the transportation of services, when there are any frailties or when nature decides that it's going to have its say, there's not much you can do. You have to cobble together detours and patch in highways. When you are utterly dependent on one or two sources of power when one goes, you're stuffed. Are we too small to be able to have even a 98% confident reliance on our infrastructure? Are we simply too small? Our population mass is too small. We certainly don't have the money right now, but then what were we doing in the previous years? Or is it just Northland that is the forgotten child? The one who's been left behind while the rest of the country has agitated for more power, more resources, more money. I think there'd be plenty of regions that would argue they've been forgotten, so I don't think that's the answer. Northlanders might feel a bit bereft having been promised bridges that didn't turn up. Having been left pretty much isolated from the rest of the country with the Brynderwyns closed. Is it just the nature of New Zealand's terrain, or has it been poor decision making from those who should know better? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's episode is unlike any other. Although I had an entirely different episode planned, something came up recently that needed to be addressed. I said something on social media that hit a nerve for a lot of anguished people, namely, ROGD parents — ironically, the population I am most focused on addressing, and typically have great relationships with in the markedly different context of personal consulting. But this wasn't consulting; it was the social media platform X, where misunderstandings and pile-ons abound while tone and context are in short supply. In turn, the reaction of people who felt hurt left me feeling quite hurt as well. I spent two days intensively processing what happened and discussing it with trusted advisers. This episode is the result of that processing, and it is probably the most vulnerable thing I will ever express to the public. I ask that anyone impacted by the recent drama take the time to listen. I hope it will also be of value to others interested in how to help families impacted by the gender crisis. If you were one of the people who felt hurt by what I said on the internet, or perhaps questioned how you should feel about it, please consider what I have to say with an open heart and mind by listening to this message in full. It may resonate in unexpected ways. In an effort to address the ocean of pain inflicted by gender ideology and the ripple effects of brushing up against them, I illuminated aspects of the nature of the beast we are up against, and addressed several interconnected matters many of us have been feeling for a while but perhaps not put words to. Along the way, I addressed matters of grief and anguish; shame and blame; victim/rescuer/perpetrator dynamics; good and evil; idealization and devaluation; and what happens when society is overtaken by a dark force that raises the stakes of our smallest foibles into life-and-death matters. Finally, I suggest a way forward that restores innocence through grace and redemption.Although I am not normally in the habit of posting videos of myself crying on the internet, on this occasion, it felt important to share my innermost experience with you as I face the heart of the beast that is hurting us all. I invite you to grieve with me. For a fuller experience including body language, you may wish to view this episode as a video on YouTube. If you don't want to spend an hour of your time this way, I only ask that you be willing to withhold judgment and refrain from making comments to disparage my reputation, since you are making the choice not to take into consideration what I have to say. That's a fair request, and I would certainly do the same for you.Likewise, if you have made critical remarks of me to others, or on social media, but you do take the time to hear me out, and you do end up feeling differently after this, I would appreciate you following up and sharing with those people how this episode impacted your perspective. Again, I would do the same for you. In case you're wondering: the hurt and drama surrounding these events caused me to delete the tweets in question, temporarily lock my account, and stop looking at it for a few days. While I thought I screenshotted everything, all I am left with when I look is screenshots of hurtful comments left by others, so I actually find myself without a record of what I originally said. Some people may have taken my choices to delete the tweets, lock my account, and/or ignore social media for a few days to mean something in particular, but my choices meant only that I needed a break from all of it to collect myself. What I have to say is contained in this episode when listened to as a whole. No timestamps, no ads, no “where to find me,” no outro today. Today I'm joined by my buddy Jace Allen. Jace is one of those people who is just born to deer hunt and chase mature bucks. He's as dedicated to his craft as anyone you'll meet. That doesn't mean there aren't hard lessons to learn…even for the most experienced woodsman. Most guys are thrilled to fill a tag no matter how the hunt ends so long as it end with a buck on the ground. Jace is a little different and the hunt and the animal means more to him than another piece of taxidermy on his wall. He's been successful this season yet again…but he wasn't happy with how the hunt unfolded - he expects more from himself and it's why you won't find a whitetail more deserving of success. Always a pleasure catching up with one of the Missouri killers - thanks for listening. To listen to the podcast click the purple play button at the top of the page. For the first time, The Also-Rans explores a third-party candidate. It's Civil War General/industrialist/suffragist/abolitionist/labor advocate Benjamin F. Butler, who ran as the Greenback candidate in 1884. In Dixie, he's mostly known as the tyrannical "Beast" governing conquered New Orleans with an iron fist. Elizabeth Leonard of Colby College is our guest expert for this discussion of this divisive Civil War icon.

Since COVID began and people have been isolated and unable to connect with friends and family, opioid overdose deaths have doubled. Our country is in crisis and Coming Clean hopes to create awareness and impact solutions to change the trajectory of this epidemic. Our loved ones' lives depend on it!"This documentary by award-winning filmmaker Ondi Timoner brings together artists, political leaders, the lead prosecutor against big pharma, recovering addicts, and those working on the frontlines to fight this - the deadliest drug epidemic in history. We want to ground the opioid epidemic in stories that show us just how connected we are, and what's at stake when we turn away from one another. Most importantly, we wanted to connect the dots on how we got here, and how we can find our way out of this crisis."About Ondi Timoner:Ondi Timoner is known to be one of the greatest talents in non-fiction filmmaking. She often takes on the stories of visionaries fighting against all odds with a gripping and unique narrative style. Ondi has the rare distinction of winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival twice - for her documentary, DIG! (2004) and WE LIVE IN PUBLIC (2009). Both films were acquired by MoMA, NY for its permanent collection. Other award-winning features include: THE NATURE OF THE BEAST (1994), JOIN US (2007), COOL IT (2010), BRAND: A SECOND COMING (2015) and COMING CLEAN (2020). In 2017, Ondi created and produced the critically-acclaimed 10-hour nonfiction television series JUNGLETOWN about the building of “the world's most sustainable town” for Viceland. Ondi wrote, directed, produced and edited the scripted film, MAPPLETHORPE, starring Matt Smith. After premiering at Tribeca, the film was released theatrically in 2019 after winning eight Audience Awards and Best Narrative Feature at several festivals. The MAPPLETHORPE Director's Cut will be released in the Spring of 2021. Ondi has also produced and directed music videos for The Dandy Warhols, The Vines, Paul Westerberg, Lucinda Williams, Vanessa Carlton, The Jonas Brothers, and Run DMC, among others. Ondi was nominated for a Grammy for Best Long Form Music Video for an EPK she directed about the band Fastball in 1999. Ondi has also enjoyed a career in front of the camera, interviewing filmmakers and innovators for a number of shows. In 2011, she created and hosted BYOD (Bring Your Own Doc) for thelip.tv producing over 300 episodes with top documentary filmmakers over five years. In 2012, she founded A TOTAL DISRUPTION, an online network dedicated to telling the stories of entrepreneurs & artists who are using technology to innovate new ways to live. Subjects include musician Amanda Palmer, graphic artist Shepard Fairey, comedian Russell Brand, musician Moby, Twitter-founder Jack Dorsey, Instagram-founder Kevin Systrom, and the late founder of Zappos, Tony Hsieh. Ondi has released two master classes for filmmakers, “Lean Content” with Eric Ries & “How to Make a Great Documentary (In My Opinion).” Additionally, Ondi has produced & hosted WeTalk, a traveling talk show about the women shaping our culture with the mission of taking #MeToo to #WeDo, since 2018. In 2014, she gave a popular TEDxKC talk entitled “When Genius and Insanity Hold Hands” explaining why she tells the stories of “impossible visionaries.” Ondi is currently helming a new film called ALONE, TOGETHER (w.t.) which looks through the eyes of scientists and artists at how technology is transforming our ways of connecting and loving, given the societal trend towards increasing physical isolation, accelerated by the onset of the COVID-19 global pandemic. SIX! SIX! SIX! THE NATURE OF THE BEAST! Yeah, we're back, and this time.. it's personal. Fueled by Eric Roberts following us on Twitter (and our inevitably cease & desist letter), Episode 8 finds us in a contemplative mood as we discuss 1995's THE NATURE OF THE BEAST (along with its controversial director) and 2014 DOC HOLLIDAY'S REVENGE (aka STRANDED), which is only controversial for being absolutely terrible. We are joined by the luminescent Tonjia Atomic, who is really way too talented to be stuck talking about Eric Roberts movies for 90 minutes, yet here we are! This one is a little late, but it's worth the wait. And you don't want to miss what's coming next! As always, check out ERIC ROBERTS IS THE MAN on Twitter, or come chat ER (or anything else) on our Facebook group. To keep up on the latest Tonjia Atomic news, head over to http://www.tonjiaatomic.com/ which will lead you to a bunch of social media goodness. Make yourself happy by checking out her latest film PLAIN DEVIL over on Amazon. As always, The Roberts Report was JAM PACKED. Discussed were: The teaser trailer for the upcoming HP Lovecraft-inspired film BLACK WAKE directed by Jeremiah Kipp. The film features Tom Sizemore, Nana Gouvea and – of course – Eric Roberts. And it just finished production! We also discussed an upcoming ER appearance in the TV show THE PLAYER starring Wesley Snipes as a former intelligence officer working as a security expert in Las Vegas. HOW WONDERFUL. And we talked briefly about the Bill Duke-directed Nat Turner biopic NAT TURNER: STORY OF A PROPHET featuring Keith David, Blair Underwood, Mike Epps and ERIC ROBERTS. Let's hope the movie is better than this weird poster. Music for this episode: Break #1 – “The Number of the Beast” by Iron Maiden Break #2 – Music from the film TOMBSTONE composed by Bruce Broughton. Break #3 – “Doctor Doctor” by The Thompson Twins Don't forget to head over to iTunes to subscribe and rate the show. If you like it.. tell a friend! Our theme song is (unofficially) officially endorsed by ERIC ROBERTS!
