Joe Anady and Mike Thezier provide an overview of the liturgy (order of worship) of Emmaus Reformed Baptist Church and seek to explain the biblical and theological rationale behind it. Listen in to find out why we do what we do in our corporate worship on the Lord’s Day.
Joe Anady and Mike Thezier discuss the membership process at Emmaus Reformed Baptist Church and why membership in a local church is so important and biblical.
Joe Anady gives an overview of his time in Rockford, Illinois where he attended the Association of Reformed Baptist Church of America (ARBCA). Joe discusses what went on at the General Assembly, his impressions, and what's next.
A few years ago, Emmaus Reformed Baptist Church decided to do away with Children’s Church (Children’s Ministry) and to bring the little ones into the worship service with the rest of the congregation. Sometimes the assumption is that we made this move because we lacked the resources to sustain a full blown Children’s Ministry. That is not the case. In this episode, Mike Thezier and Joe Anady spend a little time discussing the rationale behind the decision and also present some advice to parents for getting the most out of the worship service with the kids.
Anyone who has taken the time to compare Momen beliefs with Christian beliefs will notice that a great difference exists between the two faiths. In this episode Joe Anady interviews John Divito in an attempt to understand the reason for the differences in doctrine. John was raised in the Mormon church before his conversion to Christianity. He therefore offers a unique perspective on this subject.
Joe Anady and Mike Thezier discuss what’s new at Emmaus Reformed Baptist Church. Updates include news on Emmaus’ SCARBC application, John Divito’s work with the African Pastors Conference, the weekly observance of the Lord’s Supper, Emmaus Essentials and Sunday School for various ages groups.
Joe Anady and Mike Thezier discuss how Emmaus goes about Fencing the Table and why - how we invite people to the Table in a way that makes the biblical meaning and significance of the Supper clear. What kind of meal is it? What does it symbolize? Who is invited? What dangers are associated with partaking in an unworthy manner?
In John 17, Christ prayed for unity amongst his followers. We too should pray for unity and work hard to establish, or reestablish it, whenever possible. It should be noted that Jesus prayed for unity of a particular kind in John 17. This is indicated by the words “just as” or “even as” in John 17:20 and following. Superficial unity is not the goal, but rather deep and substantial unity. That is what we should be working towards! It might be a good idea to listen to the sermon that Pastor Joe recently preached on this passage. If can be found at emmausrbc.org/sermons/john/ (It is sermon #65 in the series preached on 02/21/2016). This podcast seeks to build upon that sermon by providing practical insights for pursuing and maintaining unity within Christ’s church. These principles can actually be applied in any setting where unity is needed (marriage, family, etc.).
Emmaus Reformed Baptist Church is in the process of, Lord willing, joining the Southern California Association of Reformed Baptist Churches (SCARBC). This episode is intended to provide some insights as to why. This is not the first thing that we have said about this. I would encourage you to listen to my interview with Pastor Jason Walter and also his teaching on associations. Hope you enjoy!
Can a person know that they have eternal life? After doing pastoral ministry for some time I have grown convinced that this is a question of tremendous importance to the people of God. While it is true that there are some who have a sense of assurance who should not (unbelievers, false believers), our concern here is to encourage those who are in Christ to lay ahold of assurance. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” (Romans 15:13, ESV)
In this episode of Confessing the Faith, Mike Thezier and Joe Anady discuss the doctrine of preservation, or perseverance. The question at hand is, if someone is truly a Christian – if they possess true faith, have been justified, and adopted into the family of God, etc. – is it possible for them to lose all of that by falling away from the faith? We do hope that this episode brings some clarity to the subject. As usual, we welcome questions!
In this episode of Confessing the Faith, Mike Thezier and Joe Anady discuss the doctrine of Irresistible Grace. The phrase “effectual calling” might be more helpful. This doctrine seeks to communicate the biblical truth that the Triune God has provided salvation for his people - The Father has decreed it, the Son has earned it, and the Spirit effectively applies it. Hope you enjoy!
Joe Anady interviews Owen Paun, who, along with his wife Nansi, are ministering in Sofia, Bulgaria – a Slavic country in Southeastern Europe that borders Greece and Turkey. To find out more about Owen and Nansi’s ministry, please visit their website: http://mydailytestimony.com
In this episode of Confessing the Faith, Mike Thezier and Joe Anady discuss the doctrine of limited atonement. This is probably the most disputed and often misunderstood of the five points of Calvinism. It is not unimportant, though. After all, we are talking about the atonement here! We are asking the question, what did Christ accomplish on the cross? Though it is a difficult subject, it is worthy of our consideration.
Joe Anady and Mike Thezier interview John Divito, who has been asked to serve as the Conference Manager for African Pastors’ Conferences. He will fulfill a critical role in overseeing and managing more than 40 conferences each year as well as teaching and helping pastors to shepherd churches. To find out more about John, please visit his website: http://africanpastors.missionsplace.com/john-divito/
Here we come to consider the “T” in T.U.L.I.P., which stands for “total depravity”. The question is this: What is man’s condition after the fall and before the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit? In other words, what is natural and fallen man’s condition? What is he capable of and what is he incapable of? Some have prefered to call this doctrine “total inability," thinking that this better communicates the issue at hand. Whatever you call it, the doctrine is of vital importance. “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.” (Ephesians 2:4–7, ESV)
In this episode Joe Anady and Mike Thezier turn their attention to the doctrine of unconditional election. This is one of the so-called five points of Calvinism. Here we encounter the Biblical teaching that God has predestined some for salvation from before the creation of the world. This election is based, not upon anything deserving within the sinner, but upon the free grace of God (it is unconditional). We begin with unconditional election (and not with total depravity) because it was the first thing to happen (chronologically) in regard to man’s salvation. We hope that this brings some clarity on the issue. We also welcome questions. Please send questions to staff@emmausrbc.org.
Joe Anady and Mike Thezier continue to converse about foundational things in preparation for a detailed consideration of the Doctrines of Grace (Calvinism). In this episode God’s sovereignty is considered, as well as the Biblical teaching that all things happen ultimately for the glory of God. These are truly basic and foundational concepts. Understanding them paves the way for a proper understanding of the Doctrines of Grace.
This is the second episode in a series on the topic of Calvinism. Joe Anady, Mike Thezier, and Austin Pine continue to deal with foundational issues, asking the question, what is our authority for truth? The way that we answer this question will undoubtedly have a huge impact upon what we believe. We know you are probably eager to get into the subject of Calvinism itself (T.U.L.I.P.), but please take the time to consider these foundational issues before moving on.
This is the first episode of who-knows-how-many on the subject of Calvinism. Joe Anady, Mike Thezier, and Austin Pine begin the conversation by addressing some common misconceptions.
Joe Anady interviews Pastor Jason Walter of Christ Reformed Baptist Church located in Vista, California. Listen in to hear Jason's testimony and about the history of CRBC.
What is the Gospel? That may sound like a simple question, but it's surprising the variety of answers you’ll hear in response. Joe Anady, Mike Thezier, and Austin Pine attempt to present the Gospel message in a succinct and memorable way. The question, who is called to preach it? is also addressed in this episode.
What kind of church is Emmaus Reformed Baptist Church? That is a question we often hear. The answer is that we are Reformed Baptists. But what does that mean, exactly? In this first episode Joe Anady, Mike Thezier, and Austin Pine attempt to give a brief answer to the question, what does it mean to be a Reformed Baptist?
Joe Anady, Mike Thezier, and Austin Pine spend a few moments introducing the podcast, “Confessing the Faith”.
