This week we begin a new series with a new guest, Misty Snyder. Misty is the coauthor of Behold Your God: Seeking Him Early and the wife of Dr. John Snyder. For help in this series, we are looking to Charles Spurgeon and J. C. Ryle. Spurgeon's little work, Feed My Lambs, was written for Christian parents and Sunday School teachers. This week, we focus on the opening section where Spurgeon hones in on what it means to feed the little ones. This feeding means that we must speak in a way that children can understand. It doesn't mean simply replacing big words with small words. But it means defining and communicating in a way they can follow and grasp. Last in the series, we will look at a sermon preached by J. C. Ryle, a contemporary of Charles Spurgeon. Check the show notes for the full text of Spurgeon's pamphlet, Ryle's sermons, and links to purchase physical copies, plus other helpful resources for nurturing the faith of the little ones in your life. Sadly, the origins of many antisemitic tropes and prejudices can be traced back to the New Testament, in which "the Jews" are cast as the religious "other" against which the Jesus movement is self-defined. As a result, Christians carry around a lot of un-historical and anti-Jewish assumptions are repeated in Sunday School classes and even the halls of academia. Let's fix that! Our guest Meredith Warren just co-edited an excellent book called Judeophobia and the New Testament. Meredith joins Helen and Dave to dig into the origins of the Bible's anti-Jewish rhetoric and discuss new ways of reading these texts without belittling or condemning Judaism. The heartbeat of the Reformation was not rebellion—it was a return. A return to the blazing center of the gospel: that salvation is not mediated by man, mass, or merit, but by Christ alone—Solus Christus.

Colossians 3 Matthew 3
Todaywe are looking at one of the most exciting stories in the New Testament. I liketo call it the story of a little big sinner. That's the story of Zacchaeus, aman who comes seeking Jesus as Jesus is seeking him. What a wonderful story. This is probably one of the favorite stories of little children in Sundayschool growing up, with the great song, "Zacchaeus was a wee little man,and a wee little man was he. And one day, Jesus passed his way.” InLuke 19:1, Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. Now remember, Jericho wasthe Las Vegas of Christ's day. It was the place where gambling, prostitutes, and where the mafia had their headquarters, so to speak. It was a bad place, and Jesus entered and passed through. Jesus is ready to pass through yourplace, no matter who you are or where you are. Jesus is seeking sinners, aswe'll see in the first 10 verses of this chapter. Behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector, and he was rich.Zacchaeus was Jewish, and his name means "righteous one," but he wasanything but righteous. He was not only a tax collector but the chief taxcollector, maybe even Matthew's boss at one time. Perhaps after Matthew becamea follower of Christ, he was burdened for Zacchaeus and prayed for him. NowZacchaeus has a prepared heart. He was rich, from collecting taxes for theRoman government while cheating people and taking more than he was supposed to.But his wealth did not bring him satisfaction or peace. Hesought to see who Jesus was but could not because of the crowd, for he was ofshort stature. He was a little guy, not very tall. Because of the crowd, hecouldn't get to Jesus. That's true today—many people are kept from Jesusbecause of the crowd leading them the wrong way, telling them the lies of theworld. My friend don't let the crowd keep you from Jesus. Don't follow amultitude to do evil. Zacchaeus couldn't see over the crowd or well enough tosee who Jesus was and what He was doing. He was curious, so he ran ahead andclimbed into a sycamore tree to see Him, knowing Jesus would pass that way. Ilike to say that Zacchaeus put himself “in the way of Grace”. Jesuswould like to pass your way if you're looking for Him. Zacchaeus, a man, becomes like a child. In the days of Christ, and even today, rich men don'trun—they walk with dignity and pride. But this man humbles himself. Not onlywas he small in stature, but he humbled his heart and became small in his ownsight. Remember in Luke 18, Jesus said, “Unless you become like a child, youcan't enter the kingdom of God,” WhenJesus came to the place, He looked up, saw him, and said, “Zacchaeus, makehaste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” So he made haste, came down, and received Him joyfully. This chapter illustrates Ephesians 2:8-9as well as anywhere in the Bible: “For by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any manshould boast.” Theone thing that keeps people from coming to Jesus is pride. A seeking sinnerwill always find a seeking Savior. I don't fully understand how Jesus seeks uswhile something happens to humble our hearts, and we begin to seek Him. But Iknow that it is the work of God's marvelous grace, which only takes place whenwe humble ourselves. God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble (James4:6). Only by grace can you be saved and begin to have a heart that seeksJesus. Here'sa rich man who has need of nothing, but he's lonely inside, has no friends, andpeople don't like him. He's a sinner, but Jesus loves sinners. What a greatstory. Today, I don't know who you are, where you're at, or what's going on inyour life, but Jesus, by His grace, is ready to pass your way. Areyou looking for Him? If you're looking, you will find Him, and He'll find you.

Ever felt like you were in too deep—like life had swallowed you whole and left you gasping for air? That's exactly where Jonah found himself… literally. But what if your lowest moment is actually God's starting point for something miraculous? In this message, Sutton unpacks the most famous scene in the book of Jonah—his time in the belly of the fish—and reveals what it tells us about God's sovereignty, mercy, and relentless pursuit of us, even in our rebellion. Whether you're familiar with this Sunday School story or hearing it for the first time, this passage isn't just about a fish—it's about a God who does the impossible to bring us back to Himself. From Jonah's self-focused prayer to God's shocking grace, this sermon will challenge you to reflect on your own story and see how God might be using even your darkest moments to save you. Watch to discover: • Why Jonah's lowest point was actually his turning point • How God's mercy shows up in unexpected places (yes, even a fish) • What to do when you feel like you're at the bottom If you're feeling lost, stuck, or just need hope, this sermon is for you. I feel so glad that I had an opportunity of opening my mouth for God in a Sunday-school, because it helped me to begin preaching; and I have no doubt that many of our pulpits have been filled by those whose first training in speaking for Christ was received in a Sunday-school, where they were asked to address the children.

On the afternoon of April 1, 1965, state troopers visited the Duncannon home of 47-year-old Byron Halter and his family, consisting of his wife, Betty, their 17-year-daughter, Holly, and Betty's mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Swank, who lived in the adjoining side of the duplex. The reason for their visit was because someone had sent anonymous letters to local papers warning that four people were about to die. But this was not a cruel April Fool's prank-- it was a senseless slaughter carried out by a disturbed Sunday School teacher.

ORIGINAL AIR DATE: JAN 29, 2014People in the world often reject Christianity simply because they can't distinguish it from mere morality. The world needs morality--oppression thrives when consciences are abandoned--but we need more than that alone. We need the gospel of grace. A gospel that has largely been lost amid the dos and don'ts and preoccupations of religious culture. People often pit grace against moralism. And they should. Moralism circumvents heart-changed morality. We need moral men and women, but moralism damages the foundation of heart-change. It's okay to pit grace against moralism, but let's not pit grace against morality. Grace is the source of real morality, and grace--thank God!--breaks the bars of moralism that imprison us.Is Sunday School Destroying Our Kids? by author Samuel C. How am I to understand the meaning of Jesus Christ's ministry and resurrection? To what purpose is the church called? And what does it mean to follow Christ in today's broken world?
