Jo Langford, beheroes.net, sits down with us today to answer the question: Is Tech-Addiction real? Jo has a very insightful take on why "tech-addiction" is not a real addiction, ways that are similar to traditional addiction, and what is most likely causing the attraction to the technology. We also showcase his new BeHeroes411 app available on the app store. This app is a reference guide for teens dealing with everything from drugs, mental health issues to how to get out of a bad date. It is one of the apps every kid should have on their phone as a resource. A little bit about Jo Langford www.beheroes.net: I am a dad, a Master's-level therapist, and a sex educator for tweens, teens, and parents in Seattle, Washington. For the last 20 years, I have worked in that intersection of adolescence, technology, and sexuality. I speak internationally using information, education, and humor to help parents and professionals increase their knowledge and self-confidence as a proactive defense against the unfortunate consequences that sometimes accompany teen sexuality, screen behavior, and development. I provide training for organizations and agencies as well as therapy to adolescents and families around a gambit of sexuality themes - with an emphasis on LGBT issues, Internet safety, digital citizenship, and comprehensive sex education. I am the author of the Spare Me, "The Talk", series - guides to sex relationships and growing up for modern teens and their parents. My latest book, The Pride Guide, is an encompassing guide to sexual and social and development, safety, and health for queer youth and their families. This book is - proudly- the first puberty book written with queer (and specifically trans) youth in mind. Edmonson County (KY) Sheriff Shane Doyle, sat down with us to discuss the growing issue of youth sexting. While most parents worry about their children being exploited by online predators on apps like TikTok and SnapChat, the reality is that more kids are sending pictures to classmates. While their is a social and psychological toll that our children face when they take these pictures and videos, it is the legal charges that children do not think about. While it is rare that a juvenile is convicted for requesting, taking or sending these pictures and videos, there are an increase int eh number of juveniles charged with felonies requesting, taking or sending these pictures. In Kentucky possessing one pictures of a nude person under the age of 18 is a 1-5 year felony. Taking the picture, even of yourself, is an up to 20 year felony. Sheriff Shane and I discuss this growing issue. I have had over a dozen parents reach out to me this year with this problem. So, I went to someone I trust to help find a solution. Divorce and child-custody are an unfortunate part of the world we live in today. Traditional courtroom-first methods lead to immediate battle and one-upmanship to see who will be the winner. This always leads to the child being the loser. In this game, parents will often use technology as a weapon to dig at the other parent. Some will give their child a phone, a gaming system or access to social media in their quest to gain the spot as the favorite parent or have loser rules at their house. It is "do my kids like me more" over #betheparent thinking. Rebecca Simpson from ELPO Law sat down with me to talk about a different way. a way that takes the fight out before it starts and gives the child a voice.
