Gaming hosts Josh, Ryan and Ace are back with GAME COURT, where Josh and Ryan go head-to-head over one of the hottest debates in gaming: are "Friendslop" games actually great, or are they ruining video games? Ace takes the bench as both sides make their case, bringing laughs, arguments, and plenty of chaos. If you love gaming debates and passionate discussions about video games, this is one courtroom battle you won't want to miss from the Video Gamers Podcast. Gaming has never been this contentious! Hey Now, Cabalists! In Episode 120 of The Secret Cabal Express, Chris, Don, and Jamie dive into a topic suggested by a listener: the etiquette of rating board games on BoardGameGeek. We talk about the rating system, how we personally rate games, how we use the collection system, and mess that is the comments section. From there, we move on to the many forms of board game media and how we use them to inform our opinions and decisions when buying new games. We also get into our crowdfunding habits and how that fits into the way we discover and acquire games. Enjoy!

Read transcriptVideo game licensing runs on a very simple equation: if a popular franchise exists, and a handheld system exists, someone will eventually put a game together and slap on a release date. That's probably the story behind Yu-Gi-Oh! Nightmare Troubadour, with Konami treating the whole affair with the enthusiasm of checking a box on an extremely profitable to-do list. It was the franchise's first outing on the Nintendo DS, arriving with the confidence of a company that already knew the math worked. The pitch itself barely needed a pitch meeting: take the actual Duel Monsters card game, cram in over a thousand cards, and let the DS's two screens do what a real card table always wished it could, which is render your monsters in flashy 3D up top while the actual decision-making, deck construction, knowing what a Trap Card does, happens down on the touchscreen below. The story loosely resets you into a remixed version of a Yu-Gi-Oh tournament arc, because apparently even a game that's essentially “trading card simulator” still needed somebody to kidnap somebody, and wireless dueling and card trading rounded things out for anyone who wanted to bankrupt a friend without leaving the couch. Making the trip through Battle City with me is The Gaming Anthropologist, who's been out in the field studying gaming culture the way some people study a subject that actually pays. So build your deck, set a face-down card of your own choosing, and let's find out whether Nightmare Troubadour actually captured what made Duel Monsters worth dueling over, or whether “the license existed and so did the hardware” was doing all the heavy lifting. Learn such things as: Is Yu-Gi-Oo the Madden franchise of anime and manga based games? How hard is it to go play a game with a different set of rules than you're used to? Are we setting a record for games where you don't even play as any of the characters? And so much more! Gaming hosts Josh, Ryan and Ace are putting their memories to the test in this nostalgia-fueled episode of the Video Gamers Podcast. Instead of replaying old favorites, they're diving headfirst into gaming history and attempting to rate recent titles purely from memory. How accurate are their takes? Has time made these video games better than they actually were, or is nostalgia clouding their judgment? From unforgettable boss fights to mechanics they swear were revolutionary, the guys debate what still holds up in today's gaming landscape and what might deserve a lower score on a modern scale. It's a fun, chaotic look at how we remember video games versus how they might actually play today. What does it take to help children thrive during a hospital stay? In this episode of Inside the Children's Hospital Podcast, Katie Taylor sits down with Alyssa Sachs, CCLS, an inpatient Child Life Specialist at Boston Children's Hospital, to explore how Child Life Specialists help children and families experience joy, connection, and normalcy—even during long and complex hospital stays. Alyssa shares what it's like supporting children on the inpatient neuroscience floor, where patients range from newborns to young adults with epilepsy, neuro-oncology diagnoses, neurosurgical needs, and more. She offers an inside look at the innovative programs that make Boston Children's unique, including gaming and technology specialists, hospital clowns, music therapy, artists-in-residence, facility dogs, and therapeutic events that transform the hospital experience. Throughout the conversation, Alyssa reminds us that it's often the smallest moments, like a surprise snow cone, a movie night on the rooftop, or decorating a hospital room, that leave the biggest impact on children and caregivers alike. Whether you're a parent navigating a hospitalization, a healthcare professional, or simply curious about how Child Life Specialists support patients in pediatric hospitals, this episode is a heartfelt reminder that childhood doesn't have to stop because of illness. In This Episode, We Discuss: What an inpatient Child Life Specialist does Supporting children with neurological and neurosurgical conditions How Child Life Specialists normalize the hospital experience Gaming and technology specialists and therapeutic gaming Hospital clowns, music therapy, artists, and facility dogs Why playrooms matter for patients and siblings Creative ways families can bring "home" into the hospital Supporting caregivers through joyful moments Collaboration between Child Life and the medical team The importance of community partnerships and hospital donors Episode Timestamps 00:00 Meet Alyssa Sachs, CCLS at Boston Children's Hospital 01:04 Why Alyssa became a Child Life Specialist 01:49 Caring for patients on the neuroscience floor 03:55 Programs that make the hospital feel like childhood 07:14 Inside the Gaming & Technology Specialist program 09:33 Bringing the outside world into the hospital 11:21 Why joyful moments matter for caregivers too 12:55 Supporting families through difficult hospital experiences 15:56 Simple ways families can create normalcy in any hospital room 18:51 How Child Life collaborates with nurses and physicians 20:55 Joy carts, lemonade stands, and surprise snow cones 23:08 Why hospital playrooms are so important 25:09 The role of hospital clowns in pediatric care 27:06 Why normalization is essential to healing 27:56 Community partnerships that make it all possible Resources Mentioned Boston Children's Hospital Child Life Services Hospital Playrooms Gaming & Technology Specialists Music Therapy Artists-in-Residence Hospital Clowns Facility Dog & Paw Prints Programs Connect with Us Instagram: @childlifeoncall + @insidethechildrenshospital Subscribe: Never miss an episode on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. James Bordeaux was a 23-year-old in Kentucky, playing EA Sports College Football 27 for a living. Then Electronic Arts — the $50-billion mega-developer backed by the Saudis and Jared Kushner's private-equity firm — tried to extract so-called "microtransactions" from inside his beloved video game. So the furious creator put his mouth where his money is: leading the type of organic, populist revolt that has become all too uncommon in American life. Bordeaux explains to Pablo how fans won a battle... but why consumers may never win the war.• Previously on PTFO: The "Pay-to-Play" Scheme That (Almost) Ruined Video Games, with Dan Soder Hosted on Acast.
