It’s our final episode of cycle 2! It’s Sagittarius season! We cap off this cycle in the best way we could possibly think of: a chat with broadcasting legend Laurie Brown. Laurie Brown has hosted The New Music, CBC’s The Journal and On the Arts, as well as serving as a seminal Much Music VJ. She notably hosted The Signal on CBC Radio 2, and now produces and hosts Pondercast, a podcast that combines music with deep ruminations about the human spirit and what it means to be alive in today’s world. We talk to her about her work in television, radio, the mission of Pondercast, and what it was like to interview Miles Davis and Whitney Houston. Listen to Pondercast here: https://www.pondercast.ca/Look out for the new Pondercast book Night that comes out this week!Follow Laurie’s ponderings on Instagram: @lauriebrownpicsThank you so much to all of our guests this season: Leah Fay, Adnan Khan, Anthems of the Void, Ronley Teper, Carmen Elle, Danielle Knibbe, Mingjia, Liz Leia, Haviah Mighty, Iskwe, Robin Dann, Felicity Williams and Laurie Brown! Hellooooooo!Today we talk to Robin Dann and Felicity Williams of Bernice!Toronto's Bernice craft weightless, genre-defying pop music that touches on indie pop, jazz, and R&B. Led by singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Robin Dann and rounded out by Felicity Williams, Thom Gill, Dan Fortin and Phil Melanson, the group came into its own in the late 2010s with the ornately produced EP Puff and the minimalist pop of Puff: In the Air Without a Shape.Ft. HEY!This week we talk to iskwē about her new album acākosīk.iskwē | ᐃᐢᑫᐧᐤ (short for waseskwan iskwew, meaning "blue sky woman") is, among many other things, an artist – a creator and communicator of music and of movement, of pictures, poetry and prose. And through it all, she’s a teller of stories that have impacted our past and will inform our future. Some are her own, some belong to others, and some belong to us all.acākosīk | ᐊᒐᑯᓯᐠ is the culmination of her creation and collaboration to this point. It’s a collection of seven sonic explorations that not only blur lines between sources and styles, but also between the actual and the ideal, the real and imagined. But by extension, it’s also the star around which immersive worlds of live performance, video, and visual art revolve. That includes the album’s stunning cover art by Sarah Legault, loaded with cultural allusions and featuring an individual star for each of Canada’s missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG) to date.Check out her new single "Night Danger" at the end of the show!Follow iskwē @iskweFollow us @grilithfairC U next week!
