HBO's Succession returned to kick off its third season this weekend, so we're gathered around the water cooler to discuss its returning state. *Warning* This episode includes details of child murders, which some listeners may find upsetting. Listener discretion is advised. The Devil in the White City. The Devil's Rooming House. The Devil Made Me Do It. The first two are titles of books about American serial killers. The last one is a movie title about a murder that inspired the third movie in the Conjuring franchise You might have noticed they all have something in common. Devil is in all of their titles. That's because the criminals are either likened to being the devil themselves or tried to blame the devil for their deeds. There have also been cases where Satanists have been accused of killing in the name of the devil --or were planning to. Like the 2018 case of the 11 and 12-year old middle schoolers in Florida. The girls were luckily caught and arrested before they could carry out their mass murder/suicide plot, though. But what about if we look at it from his perspective --"he" being the Devil-- and play devil's advocate, so to speak. Don't worry. We're not venturing into satanism territory. Just flipping the script. The Devil is often named as a co-conspirator in crimes, but has he ever been the target of murder? Has he ever been sued? That's what we're going to explore in this episode of Haunting American True Crimes. This week on Yes But Why Podcast, I showcase my talk with comedian and filmmaker, Jer Moran. Jer Moran is a filmmaker and cartoonist based in Austin, TX. He has written and directed various short films and his work has been shown at the Austin Spotlight Film Festival, Austin Comedy Film Festival, Austin Micro Film Festival, and GELOS Comedy Film Festival. Jer is also a comedian and musical improviser who can be seen at the Hideout Theatre, Fallout Theater, Coldtowne Theater, and the Institution Theater. He performs as one half of the Gothic musical improv duo “House of the Bleeding Chicken” and he is also a member of the Fallout Theatre sketch troupe, “The Floor is Lava.” In our conversation, Jer tells me about his obsession with cartoons as a kid. Jer loves “Rocko's Modern Life” as well as the Hanna Barbera oeuvre. We talk about the artists who have creatively influenced us. Jer names weird and provocative animator, Bill Plympton as one of his inspirations. He also gushes about his love for the movie, “Pig Death Machine,” and its punk rock creators, Jon Moritsugu and Amy Davis. We gab about the craziest performance art pieces we have been a part of and also those we witnessed. Jer shares how he got into performing a form of musical improv he calls “gibberish opera.”Jer and I discuss how it can be lonely to create art. I deeply commiserate with him about how tough it can be to find collaborators that match your level of excitement and dedication. Jer tells me about the films he has created and his method for getting it all done.Support Jer Moran by watching his short films, available via Vimeo. At long last, the Lakers' Big Three finally played a game together! Even with the caveat of it being the first non-practice run, and that half of the rotation was missing (no exaggeration), LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook playing together is by definition a "thing." As such, there were takeaways from Tuesday's loss to the Golden State Warriors at Staples Center. The Kamenetzky Brothers break down what looked good with the trio, and what was less encouraging. Plus, it was another good showing from Davis, who seems seriously determined to bounce back from a subpar season. In the meantime, there is a predictable (if silly) urge by the media to get a more concrete idea of how long it will take for this team to truly jell. But as Westbrook candidly (and honestly) acknowledged, nobody truly knows the answer, and throwing out arbitrary markers is pointless. As he also noted, the answer isn't likely "opening night," and that's legitimately fine. All the veterans from Westbrook to LeBron to Carmelo Anthony have reinforced the idea of this season as a process that requires patience, communication and the ability to speak frankly to each other. Assuming that accountability is there, everyone appears confident that the larger and smaller details will eventually work themselves out. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Thoughts on how the big three looked together, and their collective effect on the offense. SEGMENT 2: More signs that Davis really, really wants to reestablish himself as a truly elite superstar. SEGMENT 3: The importance of process. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Martin Luther King Jr. became the predominant leader in the civil rights movement to end racial segregation and discrimination in America during the 1950s and 1960s, and was a leading spokesperson for nonviolent methods of achieving social change. His eloquence as a speaker and his personal charisma combined with a deeply rooted determination to establish equality among all races despite personal risk won him a worldwide following. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and was selected by Time magazine as its Man of the Year. His “I Have a Dream” speech, which is now considered to be among the great speeches of American history, is frequently quoted. His success in galvanizing the drive for civil rights, however, made him the target of conservative segregationists who believed firmly in the superiority of the white race and feared social change. He was arrested over 20 times and had his home was bombed. Ultimately, he was assassinated on April 4, 1968, on the balcony of a motel where he was staying in Memphis. Sometimes houses aren't haunted by ghosts. Sometimes the restless spirits living under the same roof as the legitimate owners and tenants aren't unseen souls of the dearly departed. They're very much alive and secretly dwelling within. Wait, what? That's just the stuff of urban legends and horror movies like Crawlspace, Hider in the House, or People Under the Stairs, right? Nope. There have been real-life cases of uninvited phantom boarders and stalkers, such as Denver's Spiderman of Moncrieff Place and New Jersey's Westfield Watcher. Those are the two cases we examine in this episode of Haunting American True Crimes. And if you happen to know the name of the movie I'm struggling to remember, or if you think it could be The Unseen, let me know. Drop a line to podcast@HauntJaunts.net. Nirvana were one of the biggest and most influential bands in the world. Formed in Seattle in 1987, they pretty much single-handedly catapulted alternative music into the mainstream when their second album Nevermind, took the music industry by surprise and turned popular culture on its head upon its release in 1991. You might expect something like Crime Categories to appear in the index of the Encyclopedia of American Crime. Listed underneath that heading are a variety of crimes you'd also expect to see: everything from arson and bank robberies to kidnapping, murder, and rape. But there were a couple of crimes I wasn't expecting, such as Spiritualism, which I discussed in the last episode. But the other shocker was vampires. Of course, that was an entry I had to check out. Turns out it wasn't referring to the stereotypical bloodsuckers pop culture has conditioned us to expect. It was about vice extortionists. If you're wondering what the heck that is, stick around. We'll be talking about those kinds of vampires --which are bloodsuckers in their own right-- as well as people who have committed murder under the delusion of being the more traditional vampires --blood-drinking and all-- in this episode of Haunting American True Crimes. We examine three cases of killer vampires in particular: The Vampire of Sacramento Richard Trenton Chase James P. Riva, the vampire who murdered his own grandma with gold-tipped bullets Roderick Ferrell and his Kentucky Vampire Clan Sources Referenced in This Episode The Encyclopedia of American Crime The Sacramento Bee, Jan. 30, 1978 The Sacramento Bee, Jan. 31, 1978 Santa Cruz Sentinel, Oct. 27, 1981 The Boston Globe, Nov. 29, 1996 The Boston Globe, Dec. 8, 1996 The Palm Beach Post, Feb. 6, 1998 The Orlando Sentinel, Nov. 10, 2000 https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/51204/8-real-life-vampire-crimes https://www.browardpalmbeach.com/news/josephine-smith-self-proclaimed-vampire-allegedly-bit-69-year-old-man-outside-hooters-6466691 https://www.syfy.com/syfywire/vampire_arrested_in_flori https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/the-so-called-dracula-killer https://www.escapistmagazine.com/face-chomping-vampire-attacks-geriatric-at-hooters/ Want more Haunt Jaunts? David Locke, radio voice of the Utah Jazz and Jazz NBA Insider, brings you the daily podcast on the Utah Jazz, Locked On Jazz. Now live on You Tube for every episode. In today's episode Locke shares about the Utah Jazz vision of bringing the game directly to the fans and all fans. The NBA just virtually eliminated the coaches challenge from the game with their latest rule and that may not be a good thing. The Utah Jazz were bad defensively last year with Rudy Gobert on the bench. Can they be good this year with Hasaan Whiteside. Locke takes a Locke at Whiteside's career to decide what is realistic to expect. Then are their enough possessions to go around for the Utah Jazz? It was an issue last year and it might be worse this year. Just one look at this bleak, foreboding island makes one thing crystal clear: this is not a place for a glamorous vacation. Its isolated, barren, cold and damp. In short, it was the perfect place to teach some of the country's most hardened criminals a lesson. The intent was to serve as a place for those who were uncooperative and disruptive in other prisons, and eventually for them to be returned to complete the rest of their sentences afterwards.
