This episode features Lourdes Escalante, Executive Director of Alianza Indigena Sin Fronteras (Indigenous Alliance Without Borders), who is heavily involved in the Tucson community and is a member of the Yoeme (Pascua Yaqui) tribe. The episode starts off with a content warning to address the discussions that include accounts of domestic violence and death which could be traumatic and potentially triggering to some listeners. This thoughtful in-depth conversation addresses the culture of silence, lateral violence, femicide/feminicidio, toxic masculinity, and other factors that contribute to Missing and Murdered Indigneous Relations. Lourdes also gave an overview of the data and statistics from the Arizona Statewide Study in Partnership with HB2570 Legislative Study Committee. The conversation leads into spreading awareness about MMIR and best practices to begin to heal as a community, while supporting those directly impacted who have lost a loved one. Appointed: A Canadian Senator Bringing Margins to the Centre
On this episode of Appointed, Senator Pate speaks with The Honourable Marion Buller, Chancellor of the University of Victoria and former Chief Commissioner of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and the first Indigenous woman appointed as a judge in British Columbia. The two discuss the connections between poverty, violence against Indigenous women and girls, the mass incarceration and institutionalization of Indigenous women, and the overarching violence of colonialism. Chancellor Buller's years of experience on the bench and as chief commissioner provide invaluable perspective vis-a-vis how to address miscarriages of justice experienced by Indigenous women, including via the Calls for Justice of the MMIWG, the proposed Miscarriage of Justice Reviews Act (Bill C-40), the Senator's report on the Miscarriages of Justices Experienced by 12 Indigenous Women, and Bills C-223 & S-233, both aimed at introducing a framework for a Guaranteed Livable Basic Income in Canada.MMIWG Call for Justice 4.5 directs the government to implement a Guaranteed Livable Basic Income, and 5.14 requires the federal and provincial governments to collaborate on a thorough evaluation of the impact that mandatory minimum sentences have on the over-incarceration of Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People. Given the manner in which MMPs have contributed to the mass incarceration of racialized people, especially Indigenous women, like the TRC, the MMIWG expected the government to follow through on its commitment to repeal mandatory minimum penalties. Chancellor Buller and Senator Pate speak to the intersections of their work and respective struggles to achieve equality and justice.Content Warning: this episode mentions violence against women, rape, and murder.Episode Citations:Reclaiming Power and Place: The Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls can be read online hereInjustices and Miscarriages of Justice Experienced by 12 Indigenous Women report can be read online hereBill C-40: An Act to amend the Criminal Code, to make consequential amendments to other Acts and to repeal a regulation (miscarriage of justice reviews) can be found hereBill S-233, An Act to develop a national framework for a guaranteed livable basic income can be found hereBill C-223, An Act to develop a national framework for a guaranteed livable basic income can be found here
Sherry Corrigal, a 22-year-old woman from Nanaimo, has been missing since September 2023. Her disappearance is considered suspicious and deeply troubling by the Nanaimo RCMP, who have been actively investigating her case. Sherry was last seen in the downtown area of Nanaimo, and her lack of contact with family and friends is highly unusual.Sherry is described as being 5 feet tall, weighing around 90 pounds, with long dark hair, and distinctive tattoos on her arms, hands, and back. Despite numerous searches, interviews, and the review of CCTV footage, there have been no significant leads. Her case remains a high priority for the investigators, who are urging anyone with information to come forward directly to the police, rather than sharing unverified details on social media.Join us as we sit down with Jami, one of Sherry's foster mothers, who shares insights into Sherry's life and the emotional journey her loved ones have endured since her disappearance.--Music Composed by: Sayer Roberts - https://soundcloud.com/user-135673977 // shorturl.at/mFPZ0Subscribe to TNTC+ on Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/TNTCJoin our Patreon: www.patreon.com/tntcpodMerch: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/true-north-true-crime?ref_id=24376Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tntcpod/Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/tntcpodFollow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/truenorthtruecrime Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. On Friday, the International Court of Justice ruled that Israel has to take all measures within its power to prevent acts of genocide. In response, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly only noted that the ICJ “ delivered its response” and didn't express support for the ruling or calling on Israel to comply with its legally binding provisions to prevent genocide against Palestinians. Canada's complicated relationship with the crime of genocide is the subject of a recent article by law prof Heidi Matthews. We spoke with her two days before the ICJ ruling came out.

Meet Raven (Gvui), a passionate advocate and TikTok influencer (@rave604) dedicated to shedding light on the seismic issues surrounding Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) in Canada. MMIWG as a National Emergency: The House of Commons declaring the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people a national emergency underscores the gravity of the situation. MP Leah Gazan's call for a red dress alert system reflects the need for proactive measures to address and prevent such incidents. International Perception and Lack of Action: Discussing the international perception of Canada and its handling of the MMIW issue sheds light on the need for transparency and effective action. Highlighting the discrepancy between official talking points and the ground reality emphasizes the urgency for tangible solutions. Personal Connection to MMIW: Raven's personal connection to MMIW, including having a family member victimized, adds a poignant and relatable dimension to the conversation. Sharing these personal stories can evoke empathy and understanding from a broader audience. Power of Social Media and Grassroots Advocacy: Acknowledging the role of social media in creating awareness and advocacy demonstrates the potential for grassroots movements to effect positive change. Raven's actions on TikTok and the subsequent positive outcome, where a missing mother and her twins were found and brought to safety, highlight the impact of individual efforts. Challenges Faced by Families and Advocacy Groups: Addressing the frustrations experienced by families and advocacy groups in dealing with law enforcement underscores the need for improved collaboration and understanding. The reported lack of empathy or awareness among law enforcement officials regarding MMIWP issues emphasizes the importance of education and awareness training. Acknowledgment and Gratitude: Expressing gratitude to the Bear Clan Patrol for their role in finding the pregnant mother and ensuring the safety of both the mother and babies adds a positive note to the conversation. Recognizing their efforts and the healthy outcome of the situation reinforces the impact of community-led initiatives. Overall, the interview covers a comprehensive range of topics related to MMIWG, shedding light on the complexities, challenges, and potential solutions. It's essential to continue fostering awareness and advocacy to bring about positive change in addressing this national emergency. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darkminddetective/message

Ret. Police Officer Dan Jones and I discuss the disturbing trend of dehumanizing Indigenous women in Canada. The most recent case in point: the refusal of the Manitoba premiere to search for the remains of Marcedes Myran and Morgan Harris. This episode may be triggering for some as we discuss murder, violence, sexual abuse, policing, homelessness, sex workers, and the Pickton murders.
This episode in the MMIWG series addresses the Canadian child welfare system, and how en masse apprehension of children created ripples of trauma resulting in the increased vulnerability of women and girls. Due to character limitations, all source material is available at www.crimeopediapod.ca
It's been a week since protesters began a blockade of the Brady Road landfill in Winnipeg. They're calling on the government to search the Prairie Green landfill — a privately owned dump outside the city — for the remains of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran, two murdered Indigenous women. But the government says that, despite police believing the two women's remains are there, the site won't be searched, primarily due to safety concerns. But for Cambria Harris, that's not good enough. Her mother Morgan, along with Myran and two other women whose remains were found at the Brady Road landfill, are believed to be the victim of an alleged serial killer, Jeremy Skibicki. He's been charged with four counts of first-degree murder in connection to their deaths. In refusing to search the landfill, Harris says the government is perpetuating a long history of systemic racism that has led to the ongoing crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG) in Canada. With tensions flaring as the city seeks an injunction to remove the protesters, CBC reporter Josh Crabb takes us inside the story, and where things could be headed next. In a small Canadian town in the 1970s, the shocking murder of Helen Betty Osborne sent shockwaves through the nation and exposed deep-rooted societal issues. Helen, an Indigenous Cree woman, was a bright and ambitious 19-year-old who dreamed of becoming a teacher. However, her aspirations were tragically cut short on November 13, 1971.While walking home from a party in The Pas, Manitoba, Helen was abducted by four white men. She was taken to an isolated location where she was brutally assaulted, sexually violated and ultimately killed. Her body was found two days later, bearing the painful scars of a senseless act of violence.--Music Composed by: Sayer Roberts - https://soundcloud.com/user-135673977 // shorturl.at/mFPZ0Join our Patreon: www.patreon.com/tntcpodMerch: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/true-north-true-crime?ref_id=24376Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tntcpod/Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/tntcpod Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. After experiencing a significant health event, Dawn Carisse, a young mother of three, was involuntarily committed to a psychiatric facility where she spent a decade under round-the-clock care. Finally, on August 9, 2001, Dawn saw an opportunity and pushed open an unlocked door, disappearing into the sunshine. She has not been seen since. At the time of her disappearance, Dawn is described as A First Nations woman. She is 5'6 and 115 lbs. She has a more petite or thin frame. The federal government accepted the findings of the national inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in 2019, yet Canada has failed to deliver on its commitments to fulfil the inquiry's recommendations. The House of Commons unanimously backed a motion in early May to declare missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls a national emergency. Would declaring a national emergency help achieve the actions necessary for reconciliation? Indigenous men are much more likely to be victims of homicide than Indigenous women; are they being overlooked? Does Canada need a separate inquiry into what's happening to Indigenous men and boys?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Cindy Gladue was found dead in a hotel room bathtub at the Yellowhead Inn in Edmonton, Alberta in June 2011. After a pretty quick investigation, police arrested and charged Bradley Barton of Mississauga, Ontario with Cindy's murder. The trial that followed sparked outrage amongst the public and victims rights advocates, as well as Indigenous rights advocates. Cindy's murder and the trial that followed sparked the No More Stolen Sisters campaign that we see today for MMIWG, and she is widely considered an example for how Indigenous women are often portrayed and treated in the justice system. -K&O This podcast is sponsored by Betterhelp BetterHelp can provide access to mental health professionals with a wide variety of expertise. May 5th marks Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Awareness Day in remembrance of Hanna Harris, a Northern Cheyenne woman who was murdered on the reservation in 2013. In honor of MMIWG Awareness Day, I am collaborating with a small business called Tarabusi Creek, where my friend Steph makes handmade soaps, candles, wax melts, body scrubs, and more. She has created two custom scents in the form of wax melts, and 50% of the sales from those select products will be donated to the National Indigenous Women's Resource Center. You can find the products at Tarabusi Creek's website. If you feel called to make a donation to NIWRC on your own, you can do so on their donation page. _________________________ Patreon Request a Case YouTube Channel Goodpods: Leave a review! So much to go over in under three hours! Why are indigenous women on reservations in the US being killed at a rate ten times the national average? Why are indigenous women in Canada being murdered six times as often as other women? The answer is complex. It goes back to the first Europeans who colonized the New World and the precedents they set for the treatment of native women. And in the US, much of the MMIW crisis is related to the very confusing jurisdictional nightmare of tribal law versus state, county, and federal laws on reservations. It is WAY too complicated and nonsensical to allow any law enforcement agency to solve anything. What a mess! How did we get here? How do we get to a better place? I address all of this as best I can today, on Timesuck. MMIW - Ranelle Bennett was a beautiful 33-year-old mother of two children. She brought her family joy with the stories she would tell. She is very loved and very missed by her family. She has had no contact with her family since June 15, 2021. She disappeared from her home in Hogback, New Mexico without a trace on that day. Hogback lies on the Navajo Reservation, about 12 miles from Shiprock. This is her story. Thanks to Jackie Moranty for writing and researching this episode.
