Hungarian Esther Horvath is a multi-award winning polar photographer whose work focuses on climate research in the polar regions. By documenting the work and life of scientists who deliver important data, Esther hopes to help make a difference in how people understand what actually is occurring, and her collaborations with scientists help raise public awareness about these increasingly fragile environments. Esther was born in 1979 in Sopron, Hungary. Esther grew up behind the Iron Curtain and even though she lived only a few kilometers from the Austrian border she was ten years old before the ‘curtain' came down and she was able to explore the Austrian mountains where the Alps start, discovering a world that held a fascination which would become a life-long passion for her as an explorer. Despite a childhood interest in art and photography Esther chose to study Economics at West Hungarian University for her Masters Degree. Upon graduating she worked in the private sector in Vienna and at 25 she owned her first camera which would prove to be life-changing. With a growing passion for photography she decided to go to New York to study Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at International Center of Photography, (ICP). After finishing ICP, she received an assignment from Audubon magazine, to the Arctic Ocean, which was the next most important milestone in her life. Today she documented 25 scientific expeditions in the Arctic and Antarctica. From 2019 – 2020, Esther spent almost four months on board the Polarstern icebreaker during polar nights in extreme conditions, documenting the MOSAiC expedition in the Central Arctic Ocean, the largest ever Arctic Ocean science expedition. In 2022 she was the official photographer of the Endurance22 expedition, searching and finding Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship the Endurance. Esther won the first prize in World Press Photo Award, Environmental single category in 2020. In 2022, she received the Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography in New York for her work in raising awareness about conservation, environmental justice and climate change. Esther is a contributing photographer and explorer for National Geographic Explorer, and a Nikon Ambassador and photographer for the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research. Does a bear kill in the woods? That's the question Patrick Horvath sets out to answer in his “Richard Scarry meets Dexter” opus Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, the subject of this year's very first Four-Color Flashback. The 2024 IDW series takes place in an idyllic world of anthropomorphic animals where not all is as it seems–the local hardware store owner, Samantha Strong, has a nasty habit of heading out to the city and slaughtering random passersby. That is, until another serial killer comes to her small town of Woodbrook, threatening the life she has carefully maintained for decades. Paul, Arlo, and Special Guest™ Eric Sipple discuss Horvath's deceptively simple cartooning, his brilliant use of panel layouts, the limits of the book's suburban satire, Hassane Otsmane-Elhaou's visionary lettering, and so much more. Plus, Arlo raves about Best Picture nominee Nickel Boys. NEXT: we'll be back, someway, somehow. Welcome to Printing Money Episode 26! For this episode, Danny is joined by Dayton Horvath, Director of Emerging Technology at AMT (and Printing Money alum!). Danny and Dayton had some quality time to plan this episode, having both just been at Additive Manufacturing Strategies a couple weeks ago. And the planning was needed, because there have been a lot of noteworthy deals not just in the last month, but also some in Q4 which we hadn't had time to cover. Danny and Dayton start off by reviewing AMS 2025. Speeches by Stratasys CEO Yoav Zeif, AM Research's Scott Dunham, and The Barnes Global Advisors' John Barnes are all referenced as the additive manufacturing (AM) “industry” struggles to establish its value and confronts its status as a standalone (or not?) technology. Next, drawing upon AMT data, Dayton takes us through the 2024 year that was in 3D printing M&A and investment (Hint… not a great year!). Danny and Dayton also highlight some of the most notable 2024 deals. Then Danny and Dayton jump into Printing Money's bread and butter, analyzing recent deals across the 3D printing landscape. Some themes include software companies buying simulation companies, a continuing focus on AM for military and defense, and AUKUS, more specifically Australia. Please enjoy Episode 26, and check out our prior episodes. This episode was recorded February 18, 2025. BUFFALO, NY—February 12, 2025 — A new #research paper was #published in Aging (Aging-US) on January 3, 2025, in Volume 17, Issue 1, titled “Characterization of DNA methylation clock algorithms applied to diverse tissue types.” Researchers Mark Richardson, Courtney Brandt, Niyati Jain, James L. Li, Kathryn Demanelis, Farzana Jasmine, Muhammad G. Kibriya, Lin Tong, and Brandon L. Pierce from the University of Chicago and University of Pittsburgh, studied how biological aging is measured using DNA. Their study found that while commonly used “DNA methylation clocks” work well for blood samples, they may be less reliable for other tissues like the lungs, colon, and kidneys. DNA methylation clocks are widely used in forensic science, epigenetics and longevity research to estimate a person's biological age based on chemical changes in DNA. These epigenetic clocks help scientists predict age-related diseases and assess how lifestyle factors, such as smoking, impact aging. Most were originally developed using blood samples, and their effectiveness in other tissues remains unclear. This study tested eight different DNA methylation clocks across nine human tissue types, including the lungs, prostate, ovaries, skeletal muscle, and kidneys. The researchers analyzed data from 973 tissue samples collected through the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) project. Their analysis revealed significant differences in biological age estimates across tissues. While blood samples provided the most reliable results, other tissues showed noticeable variations. For example, testis and ovary tissues appeared younger than expected, while lung and colon tissues appeared older. “These differences across tissue types were most apparent for clocks trained using DNAm from blood only (e.g., Hannum), but also present for clocks trained on multiple tissue types (e.g., Horvath, a clock designed for pan-tissue age prediction.” These findings suggest that aging may not occur at the same rate in every organ, and that standard DNA methylation clocks may not always give accurate biological age estimates outside of blood samples. The authors suggest that new, organ-specific epigenetic clocks may be needed to improve biological age prediction. Creating tissue-specific aging clocks could also improve medical diagnostics, age-related disease prevention, and health monitoring. The researchers emphasize that larger studies with more tissue-specific DNA methylation data are needed to refine these aging clocks. By improving these tools, scientists can better understand how aging affects different organs and develop more reliable methods for measuring biological age. These advancements could lead to better predictions of age-related diseases and new strategies for healthy aging. DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.206182 Corresponding author - Brandon L. Nancy Black is the alter ego of the journalist and activist Gilda-Nancy Horvath, a Romni from Vienna, Austria. She writes poems in Romanes, English and German which are sometimes translated to music, mainly rap music. Her rap-poem "Trushula" (Crosses) states clearly that the danger of dark history repeating is always present - and that even people from marginalized groups are not safe from being seduced by the very simple answers that far-rights give, which are rooted in fear, hate and anger. Beyond this, she is creator of many projects and consulting governments and politicians. A few of Gilda's many Romani crushes are Charlie Chaplin, Alina Serban, Kali Michaela, Niko G, all the Romani journalists, Dalibor Tanic and his reporting on the Balkans, and everyone in Gilda's portrait series "Glaso," Cat Jugravo, and the Roma Armee with Sandra Selimović and Simonida Selimović. Click here to purchase your ticket. About Barbara Horvath: Barbara Horvath is the co-founder and CEO of Inveel, a startup providing technology for low-cost and high speed production of extreme-high resolution printed electronics. She holds a PhD in Materials Science & Engineering from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, and worked as a researcher at the National Institute for Materials Science (Japan), the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (France) and the Paul Scherrer Institut (Zurich) before starting Inveel in 2024. Inveel fabricates 100 nm - 2 µm linewidth wires and electrodes with low resistivity — this what they term their “high precision electronics”. At first they struggled with finding a market, since the applications for their tech were very numerous, but eventually settled on robotics. Inveel adds value to a robot by basically giving it another layer of “skin”, full of “nerve endings”, which help the robot better understand how it is interacting with the world. For instance: If a robot is holding an egg, having an Inveel skin is useful to know how much pressure to apply in order to maintain grip but not crush the egg. If the egg starts slipping, the robot will know because it will feel the egg in different parts of their “hand”, and can adjust the movements of their “hand” to prevent the egg from escaping their grasp. If a robot bumps their knee, it is very easy for their whole balance to be thrown off and for them to fall over. If their knee is wearing an Inveel skin, the robot can react faster to the perception of having bumped it and more quickly readjust their body posture so as not to fall down. If a robot needs to go up and down stairs, or walk in terrain where there are voluminous rocks, having an Inveel skin on the soles of their “feet” will help them ascertain whether they're placing their “feet” correctly on the steps of the stairs, and will help them quickly realize they've stepped on a rock, and again adapt their body posture so as not to fall over. Inveel skins also give robots proximity sensors, which allow them to sense if a person (or object) is nearby. Currently, robots have cameras through which they perceive the presence of people, and when they detect people, they slow down quite a lot as a form of risk mitigation. Inveel's proximity sensors allow robots to remain fast even in environments filled with people, because they make them much quicker in reacting to the presence of a person and avoiding collision. Inveel is currently establishing pilots with big players and kicking their R&D into turbo mode in order to cater successfully to the robotics industry. Two weeks later, we're still recovering from New York Comic Con 2024. This may have been our third year attending, but we've never experienced a comic convention quite like this one, and it may take a few more months before we've actually processed everything that happened. A major factor differentiating this event from any that came before was our new gig hosting the Harvey Awards. So, we spend the first half of today's episode taking you behind the scenes of this event, detailing what you can't see when you watch the ceremony online (via Popverse). We're talking wardrobe malfunctions, deodorant hockey play, iPad snafus, and the delightful success of celebrating the best the comics medium has to offer while doing so during Harvey Kurtzman's centennial. Within the episode's back half, we're diving deep into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees. We chat with artist Cliff Chiang about his time on the recent third issue. We explore Leonardo's existential crisis in India, Spaghetti Western action, and whether or not we can expect Cliff Chiang back on the book. Jason Aaron also returns to the podcast, but this time, he's brought the recently announced artist for the arc following "Return to New York" with him, Juan Ferreyra. As we gaze over Ferreyra's pages for issue six, we detail the perfect TMNT New York City, the heartbreak coming the Brothers's way, and the gauntlet they'll run upon their return to the Big Apple. Patrick Horvath is also back to close out the show. Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees is one of the comics' recent great successes, and few have hit the comic convention circuit as hard as Horvath. We chat about his time on the road, what he can teach us about con life, and what we can expect from the upcoming Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Seessequel, Rite of Spring.
