Many of us love a salad, but let’s face it, a pizza tastes better. Fruit salad is delicious, but nothing quite hits the spot like chocolate fudge cake. Rewind ten, even five years ago and a vegan’s diet would mostly consist of salad, pitta bread, and houmous. Gone are the days where we’d pay $15 for a salad in a restaurant because that was the only option. When you think of mac and cheese, ramen, Philly cheesesteak, and fried chicken, do you think vegan? If not, now you can. Lauren Toyota has been shaking up the internet and what it means to be vegan, on her YouTube channel and blog, Hot for Food. On her channel, create and post impressive recipe videos, proving that everything can be made vegan. She is also uniting vegan and comfort foods in her first-of-its-kind cookbook. Lauren Toyota is a Canadian TV personality who has worked for nearly ten years in the broadcast industry. For Toyota, being on air from a young age was always a dream come true – presenting, producing, and editing. In Vancouver, she was a MuchMusic VJ, working alongside A-listers like Selena Gomez, Pitbull and Justin Bieber. Although the broadcast path gave her endless opportunities, like traveling the world, she later on decided on becoming a host and producer, and now works as a full-time YouTuber/Blogger. Lauren and her unique vegan recipes have been featured in Laika Magazine, Women’s Health Magazine, BuzzFeed, Huffington Post, Thrive, and Clean Eating Magazine. She was also Food Network Canada’s first and only vegan blogger and contributor, regularly sharing exclusive recipes for Meatless Monday. For Toyota, being in the food industry almost seemed like her destiny. Even prior to becoming a vegan, she was always interested in modifying and experimenting with recipes. As a child, she had aspirations of being a chef and working in a restaurant. Although more casual and less glamourized than TV, Lauren says her social media platforms are for passionate food people to have an infinite resource of vegan recipes. In today’s episode of the Plant-based profit show, Lauren Toyota reveals having hundreds of thousands of combined followers, fans, and subscribers, from YouTube to Twitter to Instagram. – making herself an inspirational, influential voice of a generation. Lauren speaks to the value of delicious vegan comfort food as a means by which to effectively encourage people to take the blinders off. We will also chat with Toyota about her journey from being a VJ to a YouTube star and, most recently, her brand new cookbook Hot for Food – All Day. Here is my conversation with Lauren Toyota! Highlights of our music geekfest discussion include Bob Dylan's revenge themes, the inspiration behind him writing Alannah Myles megahit "Black Velvet", who "Son of a Preacher Man" was initially written for, and the time he danced with The Temptations on Much. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did. Ward's playlist: Aretha Franklin - Chain of Fools The Beach Boys - Till I Die Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone Dusty Springfield - Son of a Preacher Man The Temptations - Just My Imagination
Yes, original MuchMusic VJ, author, and songwriter Christopher Ward and I geeked out gleefully over little-known music facts this week on NSTS. And yes, as a result it's a two-episode series. Hey, we had a lot to talk about! Since his earliest days as part of the Second City troupe befriending an unknown Mike Myers, Christopher has had a lot of stories to tell. He's interviewed Paul and George of The Beatles, attended Live Aid, dined with Robert Plant, raised the ire of Elvis Costello, danced with The Temptations, and embraced the chaotic madness that was MuchMusic in its heyday. And in this first episode of two, we cover most of that and more. Enjoy!
Max and Margot sit down with Amy Bi to chat about her Canadian and Chinese roots. We learn that her mom is a published author, and that Amy dreamed of being a MuchMusic VJ and loves being in front of an audience and behind a mic --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
It's here! The second half of my chat with the lovely Erica Ehm is now live, complete with the songs that make her skin vibrate (and that John 'JD' Roberts cliffhanger conclusion). Erica's playlist was compiled as a retrospective of her life thus far, documenting childhood memories, her time at MuchMusic and the artists she befriended, motherhood and her connection to her mother, and driving Bono and the rest of U2 around Toronto in her mom's car. Erica also shares the silly reason why she was never permitted to interview U2 as a MuchMusic VJ. Enjoy! Ehm's playlist: CSNY - Helpless U2 - I Will Follow Emmylou Harris - Ballad of a Runaway Horse 54-40 - I Go Blind Cassandra Vasik - Which Face Should I Put On Tonight Jann Arden - Good Mother
It's a wonderful thing when you find out someone you've admired as a younger person is actually worthy of that admiration. And Erica Ehm certainly is. Following her stint as an original MuchMusic VJ, Erica went on to write and produce Juno-winning songs, publish books, establish two successful companies, launch a speaking career, and more. In part one of our chat this week, Erica takes me through the journey that led to her MuchMusic career and beyond, with a sharp focus on the details of her 1994 Seattle interview with Kurt Cobain, one of the last he would ever give. Our discussion was so fluid that I didn't even get to the songs that make Erica's skin vibrate! But worry not - that's part two, next week's episode.
Pat talks to former Much Music VJ and Entertainment Tonight Canada host Rick Campanelli. The two talk about Rick's unconventional start in television and becoming a parent in your mid-thirties. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Join Oliver as he has the honour of interviewing the legendary George Stroumboulopoulos! Well known for many projects, George's career has sincerely touched and impacted people around the globe. From his roots in radio and as a MuchMusic VJ, to his revered talk show that ran for a decade. George reflects on his early memories at Much (including the birth of 'The Punk Show'), and his profound love and admiration for Rick 'The Temp' Campanelli. George also shares his thoughts and feelings regarding the Don Cherry firing controversy, and Canadian Hockey culture at large. The chat touches on the many amazing musical performances that George has been privy to, including the ones in his very own living room on his show, 'House of Strombo'!Oliver inquires about George's choice years ago to embrace a straight-edge lifestyle. Learning that this decision was a large factor in shaping George's unflinching and unparalleled work ethic. From socioeconomics and evironmentalism, to veganism and intermittent fasting. Steve Anthony retired from active broadcasting about a year ago, moved to Prince Edward County, and took his business ventures with him for the ride. He and a wife Tanya who has been riding shotgun with Steve since 1997, have enough stories for a book he says he will never write. I spoke to Steve about his early days at John Abbott College on Montreal's West Island, to his time at 980 CKGM and then down the 401 to work for Gary Slaight at Toronto's Q107. As I spoke to Steve, I learned a few things about the broadcaster that others had told me about. He is loyal, but never to a fault. And the number of other broadcasters he has mentored along the way. We spoke for an hour but we could have gone three. No there is no book in the future but he did hint and some other ventures that are coming. One name that came up during the show was that of Rob Braide. He also played a role in getting another MuchMusic VJ's career started, Erica Ehm. You can seem that video from Boom 97's 97 Seconds Series. What I don’t know about the Canadian music video scene could fill a half an hour or more… as rock ‘n’ roll historian Christopher Ward is about to discover. Ward has published a charming new oral history of MuchMusic—a Canadian take on MTV for my clueless fellow Americans. The book—Is This Live? Inside the Wild Early Years of MuchMusic, The Nation’s Music Station—takes us behind-the-scenes at the creation of the video music network where the only rule was, “You can do anything you want on air, just don’t spend any money.” CHRISTOPHER WARD podcast excerpt: "Being live at MuchMusic was like improv comedy. People love to see you fail and figure out how you're going to get out of it." Canadian music stars of the 1980s who blew up around the world—thanks in no small part to MuchMusic—included Bryan Adams, Corey Hart and Loverboy. And it also made mostly local guitar heroes out of Platinum Blonde, Gowan, the Spoons and Glass Tiger. Unless you’re a native of the Great White North, you’re probably wondering what Ward’s connection to all this might be, right? Well, he was Canada’s first VJ, or video disc jockey. But unlike their American counterparts who precorded all of their patter between music videos, Ward and his cohorts worked live. Ward got his start as an entertainer as a member of Second City Touring Company, where he became friends with future SNL comedian Mike Myers and was Myers’ sidekick on the original “Wayne’s World” before Dana Carvey brought life to Garth. He has also written songs for Diana Ross, Wynona Judd, The Backstreet Boys and Alannah Myles, for whom he wrote the #1 hit, “Black Velvet.” CHRISTOPHER WARD podcast excerpt: "Mike Myers calls me the 'entertainment survivalist' because we would go on the road together and I was prepared. I would bring a sandwich and I would have cold beer stashed in the van. I was ready to cope. I took pity on him and brought extra sandwich, extra beer, and a splitter for the headphones. And we both loved The Clash." Christopher Ward was one of the first Much Music VJ's. His new book is called Is This Live? Inside the Wild Early Years of Much Music: The Nation's Music Station. There's a lot we forgot or don't know about the station's early years. Partly because not everyone had the channel for the first few years; it was not apart of the basic cable package until 1987. That led to some lean years budget wise. And this is where the genius of programming head John Martin came in: He hired creative types who knew how to fill a blank canvas. Enter Christopher Ward. You can learn a lot from the past. Being challenged by a budget can always be overcome by hiring creative people who can fill the space. Other things I learned: The first female VJ was Catherine McClanahan, (not Erica Ehm) that I once wrote to MuchMusic and complained, and how often Christopher's friend Mike Meyers would appear on the station. Christopher left for reasons that were all too obvious; writing and producing Alannah Myles' number one song in 1989, "Black Velvet". He told me about the joys of having a number one song on his resume.
