Donut shops are an integral part of Southern California's landscape, with an independent mom-and-pop on almost every corner. But, how did they become so prevalent? And how did they all come to use the same pink box to signify that fluffy goodness inside? SoCal's donut scene owes much of its legacy to Cambodian refugees, who came to California during the Khmer Rouge's civil war. In fact, your local corner shop is most likely thanks to one man in particular: Ted Ngoy, the Donut King. Ngoy fled Cambodia in 1975, and eventually opened his first donut shop in La Habra called Christy's. Although small donut shops existed before Christy's, Ngoy's donut recipe and signature pink box soon became the standard, largely because Ngoy would help other Cambodian immigrants open shops of their own. Today on AirTalk, we learn about Ted Ngoy's legacy and the Cambodian donut shop that has made SoCal the donut capital of the world. Joining us is Alice Gu, director of the documentary The Donut King and Phung Huynh, artist and educator. You can see Phung's Pink Donut Boxes series at Cal State Long Beach as part of their Against Monoculture exhibit. You can also watch The Donut King documentary on Hulu.

The sitcom returns for a third season with Rakhee Morzaria, who plays Camille, joining Phung on this round-table chat, along with showrunners Jennica Harper and Nelu Handa. We start off talking yard sales, the focus of the season three premiere. "Almost all the ideas on the show come from a very real place," says Phung. Also noted is how the kids on the series (played by Zoria Wong and Roman Pesino) are growing up and are more involved in storylines. And, yes, hip hop neighbour Kardinal Offishall returns as himself.Phung also says he was pleased by the response to such a diverse family from viewers watching in the U.S. last season on The CW. "I didn't want anybody going to my boss and saying, 'What's with that teenage asshole?'"Like his character, he never learned American Sign Language."I grew up in a hearing family and went to a regular school, so I never was exposed to it," he says.Among the people he did hear from were the casting folks on Conan O'Brien's former late night talk show, who invited Demers on three times. He's also been featured at Just for Laughs in Montreal. Also starring is Geri Hall (This Hour has 22 Minutes), Dan Beirne and Elise Bauman. One More Time airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on CBC, immediately before Run the Burbs.
October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Month in the United States. Although research suggests that over 30% of pregnancies end in miscarriage, this experience can feel extremely isolating and lonely for families. It certainly did for our guest today, Anne Phung Nguyen Guzman, who experienced 2 miscarriages before giving birth to her beautiful baby boy last summer. Lack of support and empathy from her medical team, as well as toxic positivity from people around her, only made this process even more difficult. Anne has since shared her experiences on social media with vulnerability and honesty, in hopes that others who are going through their TTC (Trying to Conceive) journey can feel less alone. Everyone's TTC journey is unique and deeply personal, so we hope this episode can provide some comfort and insight if you or a loved one are going through this process. __________________________________________ Hosts: Janet Wang and Helen Wu Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Pampers: For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the #1 pediatrician recommended brand. • BetterHelp: Get 10% off your first month with code “ABG” at betterhelp.com/ABG __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: hello@asianbossgirl.com __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. Pour l'épisode 33, Linda rencontre Benoit Do Quang. Should you take the lead on tasks as a business leader? Or should you outsource all of them and stay the "Visionary". Can a company even thrive with only a visionary? It's an interesting debate because most "visionaries" still call themselves the CEO of their business. In this episode, Phung shares a personal story of what happened to him recently in his networking crypto community and vents his frustrations about it... We also cover Phung and Wally handles the communication and expectations in each of their 3 business dynamics: personal business, community business, and family business. In this podcast, Daniel shares the journey of how his parents came to Australia during the Vietnam war as refugees with absolutely no money and no possessions. In his words, they were so poor that they would run out of food. Daniel believed that to be successful in life you had to be born into wealth and therefore he had no dreams. Using Tom Cruise as one of his idols who overcame poverty, he decided to turn his life around. By studying hard and working as a dentist he became successful but realized he could only help so many people in the day. This was also a time when he discovered the power of marketing and messaging to reach people in a unique way that spoke to their wants and needs. Fast forward to today, Daniel runs his own marketing agency 'Full Books Marketing' which helps personalities and brands scale their businesses and outreach through PR (Forbes, Vogue, Entrepreneur, Yahoo), social media verification, and business consulting through the use of innovative (and sometimes controversial) marketing methods. Daniel also runs his own podcast 'From Poverty To Success' and shares a lot of the wisdom and tips he has learned through his business and from various mentors that he passes on to the public.
