There are very few books within the Western Magical Tradition which have had an impact and legacy beyond the tradition itself. In 1584 a book appeared written by a country gentleman that was unlike anything at the time and unlike anything since. Reginald Scot's The Discoverie of Witchcraft was a massive work which saw Reginald attempt to shine a light on Witchcraft in order to discredit the common belief that Witches and Witchcraft had as much power as people believed it did. In exhaustive detail, Scot put many spells, enchantments and rituals in his book which only saw his work be used for Magic as opposed to against it. Simply put, The Discoverie of Witchcraft is one of the most important books in Magical History. Period.

What if everything you think you know about the Witches' Sabbath is wrong?The broomsticks, the Devil, the midnight orgies on remote mountaintops: this image has haunted the Western imagination for nearly six hundred years. But where did it actually come from? Was it an inquisitorial fantasy imposed from above? A distortion of real folk traditions of spirit-flight and nocturnal procession? A recycled conspiracy theory older than Christianity itself? Or something stranger than any of those?In this video I trace the Sabbath from its origins in a handful of Alpine witch trials in the 1430s, through the great demonological texts of the early modern period, to its reinvention by romantics, feminists, and modern practitioners who know the image was constructed and use it anyway. I cover the Cohn vs Ginzburg debate that still organises the field, the Friulian benandanti who fought witches in their sleep, the antisemitic roots of the word "sabbath" itself, Margaret Murray's influential and almost entirely wrong witch-cult hypothesis, and why the Wheel of the Year is a twentieth-century invention. I also look at where the term "esbat" actually comes from (spoiler: not where you think), the connection between the Sabbath and the Wild Hunt, and what contemporary Italian folk practitioners make of all this today.This is serious historiography made accessible, not dumbed down. On this episode we are stepping into the strange, earthy and folkloric energy of May Witchcraft. We begin with Lily of the Valley after my mum recently gifted one to me for my garden and naturally, I ended up completely falling down the rabbit hole of its folklore and magical associations. Together we explore the flowers connections to faery folklore, protection, divination, springtime traditions, connected deities, old Christian symbolism, weddings, luck, death omens and the return of happiness. Despite its delicate appearance Lily of the Valley carries an incredibly liminal energy and has long been associated with the veil between worlds. From there we descend underground into the world of coal and charcoal magic. Lately I have been feeling much more earthy and grounded within my practice, perhaps because of Taurus season but also because I have been spending so much time gardening, growing herbs and reconnecting with the soil again. This led me towards wanting to explore the simple but powerful ingredients that would once have been accessible within everyday folk magic — things like salt, charcoal and coal. We look at the magical uses of coal and charcoal throughout history including protection, grounding, purification, banishing, prosperity work and spiritual cleansing alongside old folk beliefs surrounding miners, omens and underground spirits. Finally we finish with haunted mining folklore and ghost stories inspired by the folk horror novel Scratch Moss by David Barnett. Expect tales of Knockers, phantom miners, eerie omens, ghostly hands carrying candles through the tunnels, spectral black dogs, Bluecap spirits and the strange supernatural folklore that grew from the deep mines beneath the earth. Jimmy-Buffet-Maxxing. That is what we're doing. Anna and Raven are participating in this. Enjoying life, taking it day by day with a margarita. Who are you “maxxing”?  Is it early COVID vibes again? Anna and Raven give their predictions on what's to come with the “Hantavirus”. Do people want to get locked down again to make money for nothing?!  Ravens' favorite popcorn was on sale when he went to Costco this weekend, and he was more excited than he should have been. Anna says this classifies him as old now. What makes you excited now that you are older?  When was the last time you had fun? Anna thinks she is not having as much fun as she should. Producer Sophia, Producer Justin and Raven explain the last extra fun time they had.  You can't question TSA! Anna is scared her husband will say something wrong in an airport sometimes. This TSA worker went viral for explaining her strange TSA encounters. Paul, Anna's husband, will probably be on it soon enough.  There has been a surge of Etsy witches recently, so Anna and Raven had to speak to one. Then... Anna became one. She is now channeling her powers with her disappointing Mother's Day gift. A blessing in disguise! The new teen insult is “Low-income faces”. Run down, no effort, no money for lotion. It's going around... Anna, Raven, Producer Justin and Sophia all explain their biggest insults ever received.  Lisa ran over a bike that a kid left in the street behind their driveway. She drove over it and didn't even realize. Afterward she ran it over, she got out of the car and left it on the side of the road. The child's parents from down the street called her husband, Jack, and asked that she replace the bike since she ran over it. Or at least contribute $75 towards a new bike. She refuses to because why was it in her driveway/road to begin with? They said their son had just left it there for a minute while he was knocking on a neighbor's door before school. Her husband says they should just pay for it; she ran over it! She says no way. What would you do? Alison has a chance to win $400! During the Second World War, Scottish medium Helen Duncan claimed to pull the dead out of the dark, until the British state decided her séances were dangerous. After she appeared to reveal a naval disaster that was still officially secret, she was dragged into court under the centuries‑old Witchcraft Act, branded a fraud, and locked up as Britain's so‑called “last witch”, turning one woman's ghost shows into a clash between belief, fear, and wartime paranoia.
