One of our best up and coming country music talents is being recognised across the ditch. Zac Griffith is a self-taught musician from Tapawera, near Nelson, and his rise started at the Gold Guitar Awards, which he won in 2023 at the age of 18. He joined Kaylee Bell on tour last year, and got a co-sign from Entertainer of the Year, Lainey Wilson. Griffith told Mike Hosking that Bell has been a big influence and cheerleader for him. “She really has boosted my confidence, especially with taking me on that tour that she did last year,” he explained. “It's, you know, getting the praise from people that you look up to – people that are doing what you want to be doing.” Griffith had won a handful of country music awards before taking home the Gold Guitar, but it was that award that reinforced his path in music. “Winning that really was, was a testament to me, and was, yeah the thing that made me go, okay, I must be doing alright.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tre RussoTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Tre Russo. Tre is the bass player and front man for the new band out of San Diego, Soundivision. Tre is also the son of pop punk legend Scott Russo; but we really focus on Tre and his new band. In this episode, we chat about his getting into music, and what made him and his friends decide to put a band together. Then we talk about their writing & producing style, and some of the previous incarnations of the band before they settled on this lineup. Of course, Tre shares stories of growing up around his dad and Unwritten Law, and the impact that environment and the array of musicians that were always around. Soundivision consists of Tre Russo, Kerek Martinson, and DJ Hernandez. Soundivision's debut album "Invincible" is available everywhere, and Tre even lets le play my favorite track from the record. We go all over the place in this one, and Tre gives some peeks behind the curtain of what it is like to not only grow up with musical inspiration and support, but how that support manifests itself even into his adult years. Follow Soundivision on Instagram and catch one of their live shows if you have the chance.

Revving up the 'way back machine' today with one of my fave 60s rock groups Strawberry Alarm Clock (Incense and Peppermints; Rainey Day Mushroom Pillow) with bass player for the band, George Bunnell! We start off talking about their new album 'Monsters' (and catch their follow up tune 'Blow Your Mind', also available at their website). Listen in as we talk about the early days of their music (where did the band's name come from you ask?), working with the late Ed King (who went on to work with Lynyrd Skynyrd), creating the ultimate E Major 7th chord (who knew?), working with Big Stir Records AND the band's cool upcoming gig at LA's famed Whisky a Go Go on February 28. Bring your 'flower power' selves and join us!About the Spotlight Conversations podcast:Tune in as I invite friends inside my cozy linoleum free recording studio to talk about all things media - radio, television, music, film, voiceovers, audiobooks, publishing - if guests are in the spotlight, we're talkin'! On this episode of Caught on the Mike, I sit down with Seattle singer-songwriter Dylan Espeseth to talk about his new single “Whine” — a stripped-back, emotionally direct track that came together in a burst of instinct and honesty. We dive into the 15-minute writing session that sparked the song, why he intentionally leaned into a raw acoustic sound, and how teaching himself production during the pandemic completely reshaped his relationship with music. Dylan also reflects on the vulnerability behind “Falling Faster,” opening for The Rocket Summer, and what fans can expect from his debut full-length album arriving in 2026. This conversation is about trusting your instincts, embracing imperfection, and writing the songs that feel too real to fake.
